Nft of basketball games it was the speculative housing market of basketball games there was a bubble the Celtics weren’t playing particularly great in the first three quarters but and I I tweeted it out in the first quarter and all throughout my my Boston Sports Journal live chat I do a live kind of

Game coverage and we do a chat uh in the comment section there and throughout the whole thing my running theme was geez the Celtics aren’t making the right reads but they’re up by 10 the Celtics doesn’t feel like they’re they’re executing properly but there they are up

15 and it just kind of felt like they had possessions where the entire thing was just crappy they had one possession where it was like 16 seconds of muck and somehow pton Pritchard kind of pulled out of it and ended up being an alleyoop to Luke cornette like those types of things were

Happening all night long and I was just sitting there the the the story of this game had they held on and had they continued and and let’s just say Dean Wade just stays normal Dean Wade and doesn’t turn into you know Ray Allen or Steph Curry or

Whomever if the Celtics just continue on and the game continues on the story would have been wow the Celtics are just they’ve reached this level where they can just outclass teams they’re they’re not even they’re they’re not even like they don’t even have to execute particularly well

Anymore they’re just so talented and the muscle memory is there where when they need it they can dip into it and and that really is like the elite level right that’s the champ ship level kind of play where what we saw for three quarters was they they could kind

Of do things not entirely the right way and I remember christops porzingis saying this like a month ago or so and and he kind of reiterated it after the game in this one where it’s like they know they understand like we don’t have to be perfect to win these games we know

And after the game he called this a a a good loss now not like in a moral Victory type of thing or anything like that he called it a a good loss because they kind of needed it as a like a recalibration he used recalibrate uh just like a little bit of

A a humbling a little bit of a an ego check because they played this game for the most part like yeah we’re so good we like Tatum and not just Tatum but like Dereck white did it like other guys did it you you run a pick and roll and they

They two go to the ball and the the play is always to just okay swing it swing and porzingis is at the top of the key a couple of times and they didn’t get it to him and guys are open and and what ends up happening is they they were more

Interesting in in attacking the mismatch Tatum the other day after the game I think it was after the Warriors game talked about like yeah I’ve got the big on me and someone else has got the small like if like poring got got the small I

Know the right play is to give it to him because that’s just that’s the right play and I I even though I want to attack this guy I I don’t I shouldn’t do that but in this game he did do that he didn’t give the ball up it felt like he

Was like hey you know what I got I got matchups here I’m I’m just gonna go for mine it was a very kind of like almost last year’s team kind of performance from him and if if you want to get into I’ll I’ll touch on the valuable lesson part now a

Certain mindset because you know if we get the ball to the right guy good things are going to happen when you get away from that you really take away from what that pad is between you and the rest of the league so I look at this fourth quarter collapse in the big

Teaching moment if I’m in a film session with these guys is if you don’t execute if you try to do things your way and this is like if I’m Joe moula I’m loving this opportunity to say this if you guys want to do this your way go ahead do it

Your way and this is what happens it’s a reminder that if you do it this way and and ignore all of the things that you’ve done to get to be Far and Away the best team in this league and to have uh seven and a half and eighto leads uh in the

East and and really have everybody understand like you basically the Celtics are going to be the number one seed throughout the playoffs everybody kind of has accepted that but the reason is because you’ve stuck to that mentality you’ve stuck to the the principles of the team and you’ve stuck to defend

Rebound get out there move the ball score then get back set your defense and do it again you’ve you’ve stuck to these core principles that’s what makes this year’s team different than last year’s team and the year before that and when I sit here and say I believe in this team

So much that yes go stake out your parade route uh your your your seat in the parade route right now I still believe that but the Celtics gota the Celtics have to hold up there into the bar gain which is play with that mentality that you’ve been playing

With and Missoula can say you you want to play like this this is what you did last year and you didn’t make it to the finals this is what you did the year before and you got beat in the finals you want to play like this go ahead go

Go ahead and do this again and you’re gonna waste your opportunity that’s what that fourth quarter was that’s what most of this game was so it’s a it’s a good reminder porzingis afterwards said it was healthy and I completely agree with him like I don’t this loss doesn’t matter it doesn’t

Matter in the standings it doesn’t matter that they lost this isn’t some sign or anything like that except that it’s it’s a reminder to them there is a formula for you to be the best team in the NBA you you’ve been sticking with that formula for the most

Part most of the Season you’ve grown I’ve seen the growth from the beginning of the Season till now and even through three quarters of them of them not being their entirely best selves it was still kind of there but it wasn’t there enough and it has to be there for the

Full 48 or as close to the full 48 as possible if you do that then these fourth quarter collapses don’t happen right you Dean Wade can get hot but then the Celtics answer so if they just take this and say you know what we did get away from our

Normal thing that’s on us we had a bad night we kind of got away from it not a problem we’ll get back to it in the next game then great then this becomes then this actually does become a good loss because it’s that humbling kind of loss

That you’re like we got away from our core principles we learned our lesson Played with Fire got burned now we go back get back on track this is great people asking if you’re PE peeking too soon well this is a great kind of antidote for peeking too soon so this

Loss can be a good loss if if you take the lessons from it you learn from it and you move on you say okay we’re not doing that again because we just learned that if you if you do this you’re going to get burned but if you don’t learn

That lesson and do it again then then it forces somebody like me who’s been very very optimistic to say have I been have I been overly optimistic but I don’t think so and that’s it it’s always it depends on what do you do out of this they had

19 seconds left let’s go through it 19 seconds let’s first of all let’s go back to a couple seconds before that we’ll go to the execu tion where the Celtics get uh they’re down four this is the beautiful part of this and this kind of highlights the point of the first

Segment down four they get a pick and roll with Derek white Jason Tatum left corner Jaylen brown right corner Derek white runs a pick and roll with with christops porzingis porzingis pops he gets the ball uh goes over to Drew holiday holiday is kind of covered but

Then he cuts back door boom nice pass layup that’s beautiful execution the fourth quarter is all about buckets Dean Wayne can go ballistic 20 points in the fourth quarter not great but you can survive that if you get Buckets and you just need to get any bucket you can it

Doesn’t matter if you’re an if you’re going three for two three for two three for two because eventually it’s you’re G they’re going to run out of time and 22 points in that situation that’s a lot of possessions for them to kind of go three for two and that’s just not it’s not

Possible you just got to score and the Celtics scored without it needing to go to a specific player just needed to go to the right player and it went to the right player there then porzingis makes this amazing play to break up the alleyoop gets it up ahead to Holiday

Porzingis bust his ass down the floor gets the and one layup Celtics up one beautiful great execution that was going to be the story after the game at that point was going to be see Jason Tatum and Jaylen brown but mostly Jason Tatum see Jason

Tatum if you just get the right the ball to the right guys this is how you execute down the stretch the Celtics are finally starting to figure it out but no it got down to that last possession first of all they give up that that putb

Dunk to Dean Wade like come on somebody box out even in that spot you couldn’t box out 19 seconds left why doesn’t Joe moula call a timeout he shouldn’t have called a time out that was actually the right play 19 seconds left you come down what you’re supposed to do down one come

Down you don’t call a timeout because Wade is on the floor Darius Garland is on the floor you’re supposed to attack those guys those are you want weak links in there remember earlier in the game they frantically called a timeout earlier in that four quarter they frantically call a timeout to get

Garland out of the game they substituted Garland out of the game to get a defensive player in so you leave Garland on the floor you attack Garland except you do it like right away you take the ball 19 seconds and you push it you run quick offense you’ve got you’re down one

You have to be willing to extend the game and trust your defense so you don’t call timeout you you keep the weaker Defenders on the floor you come down you execute your play whatever it is pick and roll pick and P whatever it is you execute if you score theoretically it

Should take four five seconds so six second so you get over the you get it over half court it’s like 17 you get it down to like 14 13 12 all right at that point that ball should be in the air if it goes in great they’ve got 11

Seconds left you’ve got the number two defense in the NBA you’ve got great Defenders all over the floor you can if it’s a two or a three depending your your that’ll affect your defensive coverage but go and defend and they are in the same situation they will have to execute in a

Certain amount of time in case they miss because if you miss then you have time to play the foul game and you still have your two timeouts so if you make it you trust your defense and even if they make it you’ll have time for another shot

Because you’ve got your timeouts you can call your timeout if you make and they make you can call your timeout Advance it you have another timeout in case you can’t inbound the ball or you have another timeout in case you don’t like the the alignment or

Something and you can make a change so that’s why you keep two M two timeouts in case of make make miss you still have like 11 seconds or so foul you’re only down one they make two you’re down three timeout Advance the ball you still have time for a quick two

Three second play make a shot you can even go for two in that situation right because now time you still have another timeout you go for two or you go for three whichever if you go for two you make it you still have like seven seconds left if you can score quickly

Foul timeout if maybe they miss miss one now all you need is a two to tie the game call your timeout Advance the ball run your play you with 19 seconds trailing by one you have a chance to get three shots off in that configuration with your two timeouts and one of your

Shots should be against Darius Garland or Dean Wade in some sort of action that’s why you go quickly and that’s why you don’t call the timeout right away now Joe moula says he did try to call a timeout with four and a half seconds left and it was clearly not going he

Still wanted the time and the refs didn’t see it well that’s a problem because the refs are supposed to see the timeout Missoula should be running out to the floor screaming timeout time out like waving jumping at half court to get the attention to call the

Timeout maybe he didn’t do it because he didn’t want to get technical foul I don’t know but you got to do something to call the timeout and get their attention it’s on the referee to see like if you’re an NBA ref let me just say and this is not why they lost the

Game but look if you’re an NBA ref and it’s a last minute situation last second situation like that somebody should have like in their peripheral like is the coach gonna call a timeout like coaches call timeouts in that situation you need to be able to see it you can’t be two

Tunnel vision on the you have to be able to see everything you’re an official they did at the end the way everything went by the way they did get it right as far as like why didn’t the Celtics get possession after the Jason Tatum initial foul call um because of

Imminent possession well at that point the the game would have been over so the S the right call was the jump ball and once the ball is tipped you get the the clock starts they could have gone to the uh monitor to see if there was a 0.1

Situation maybe there could have been 0.1 and the Celtics could have gotten the lob that could have been a situation uh maybe that’s something that that should have been addressed last two minute report’s going to be interesting uh I’m sure that’s going to piss a lot of people off but the final possession

Was completely botched by Jason Tatum why you wait like that I don’t know you’re not supposed to wait like that you’re not supposed to go for the final shot Tatum has been in that situation before he’s failed in it before that is something that you need to figure out

You’ve got to figure that part out it’s not just you and your raw talent and you versus this matchup because I tell you it’s it hasn’t worked it hasn’t worked enough he’s had big games and he’s hit he’s hit last second shots before but it’s been a while and this

Is something that’s going to hold him back when people look at game like this you say this you want me to make make this guy the MVP he’s great he’s First Team all NBA but is he Giannis is he joic is he we’ve seen LCA donic bury the Celtics

How many time Luca donic making a last second shot to win a game it’s it’s highlights are all over the place and you can say well Jason Tatum’s better than luuka donic okay yeah but if you’re not closing these games and if you’re consistently missing these fadea away

Shots at the end you’re not going to get the MVP you’re not gonna you’re not going to get higher than fourth or fifth because guys like joic are at the center of the team executing to win games I know I’m saying this after they well they they had a huge comeback they lost

Their game in overtime because Kevin Durant is awesome but regardless joic is at the center of them winning games he beat the Celtics these guys are MVPs for a reason Jason Tatum if he can figure these this little bit out it’s the last it’s it’s his final boss and it’s the Boston

Celtics final boss if you can get past this if you can figure this out then this is what makes the MVP not being the best player on the best team not any of these other arguments that we’ve been hearing this games like this where everything’s going

Wrong and Tatum down the stretch in the last two minutes is in control of the game does it mean that he scores the last 10 points to beat the the Cavs maybe does it mean that he has four assists in the last minute or last two

Minutes and no points to beat the Cavs might also mean that maybe he’s he’s blocking shots and drawing two and kicking and swing swing and all that same stuff that they do all the time that is being in control of the game you don’t have to

Be the the shot maker you have to be in control of the game and this is why I think joic is far in away the MVP because more often than not he’s in total control of the these games so when we talk about the level

Tatum needs to get to like he’s at an incredibly high level of basketball he’s top five in the NBA right but how do you get to that top two or three that’s that mvp level that for real we’re not just making an argument because the Celtics are good at we have

To make an argument for Jason Tatum like the guy that is so good like like Luca where your team is not great but you’re still in the MVP conversation so combine the team being great and you being that great that’s joic right that’s Giannis but it’s being in

Control of those moments and that means understanding the situ situation understanding what you’re trying to do understanding all of those elements of that final 19 Seconds come down run a play quickly you heard scal on the broadcast if you listen to the Boston broadcast he’s like you got to go

Much quicker than this you have to go he’s like telling him go go go so he look it is a valuable lesson it is a very teachable moment if if Missoula is the coach I think he is and I know him to be he’s hammering this point

Home like Tatum just come like come down if you’re gonna take that shot if you’re gonna go one-on-one against Garland do it but do it with like 16 15 14 seconds left so we can either defend a one-point lead or have a chance for you to do it again and again

If you need to because one of those one of those shots you can say one of those three attempts is going to work but regardless gotta understand the situation and that’s what makes the Celtics a Championship uh team and that’s what makes Tatum an MVP he’s right there it’s just that next you

Gotta beat the final boss you got to beat the final boss to beat the game so Celtics now move on to play the Denver Nuggets both the Celtics and the Nuggets lost on Tuesday night so they’re raring to go on Thursday of a podcast tomorrow kind of picking up the last
