Detroit Pistons Show Fire. Is It Here To Stay? | WP 102
Smooth with the transitions man goodness gracious wake up wood welcome back chat family you guys have been electric today the chats uh hitting that like button continue to do that share the stream push the Stream post the stream wherever you can put the stream man let’s let’s
Get it man let’s get it you guys are the best ones uh and you guys hope to make this the best Morning Show in Detroit sports period man and and as well that phone line 31355 26322 and if you have any questions for the man and the legend
There’s no myth Mr Rod beard then definitely get those into the chat but I need you guys help with something real quick what’s up I got we got to get this drum roll going man oh yeah all right let’s rock hey yo welcome again and shout out to
The legend Detroit News Rod beard brother you already know it’s the second segment so we got to talk and we get to talk about a win today yay but how you feeling brother and you already know we kick it off with Rod’s thoughts uh I think Rod’s Frozen right
Now Frozen at time what would you say if you were R what would you say if you were R you say man they they shot more free throws they made more free throws than the opposing team that’s a win in my book I think we’re good definitely
Yeah we are good back how I do all hey did you hear your drum roll at least I did not you know what we’ll do it one more all right let’s let’s run it back man I need y help man let’s rock hey yo welcome and shout out to the legend
Detroit News Rod beard we had to add a little bit extra on to that one man but brother as always how you doing uh and take it away Rod’s thoughts man we actually like I told the people already we get to talk about a win today I’m gonna say
This Mighty Williams felt like he really dug into that idea of the bad call and that was that that was good to see that that he was if you say games don’t mean a lot that means that meant a lot to him and to come in and to kind of defend his
Team that way said something to me and for the rest of the season it may not mean very much uh in terms of games but I think that’s a galvanizing and potentially a galvanizing um Force to just say hey our coach went out there and we knew this was some bull um the
Officials made the call whatever it is the NBA kind of admitted hey we missed one three really I mean whatever but the the way that Monty Williams addressed that was good to see for Pistons fans some of whom have kind of questioned whether he’s been plugged into this team
All season but that’s that’s a clear sign that he is yeah you know what we’ve asked uh and we’ve seen fans asking as well wandering and pondering is there any fire in this team is there any fire from the head coach are they kind of taking on the Persona of who Monty
Williams is but over these last couple of games especially since the trade deadline we’ve seen this team’s defense improving and I believe believe that after that last game you saw their fire kind of start to spill over into the court and in the game against the Bulls
And against the Knicks I saw a different level of play out of this Detroit Pistons team and it’s pretty much a different team other than the the core than we had seen kind of uh in the first half of the season and and really parts
Of last season as well and we get it we get it we get it this is not a team that’s going to play themselves into the play in this year but in terms of what this team can be moving forward I absolutely hope that this is the type of
Fire that sticks and it one of the key things was Monte Williams saying you know what we have a young team we want to make sure that these players they not they’re not they’re not playing from a position of expecting anything from the refs that they’re not playing from a
From a position of complaining to the refs but when and he said this too we’ve done it the right way we’ve done it the right way all season we’ve sent in the film we’ve we we’ve done the right complaints to way they ask us to submit
It and when it doesn’t work maybe he could have done this earlier in the season but at least with this group of guys right now now I do believe that it went a long way for them to see their coach really step up to the podium and
Say you know what I got to take one for the team right now yeah yeah and and you take that fine if a fine was coming but I mean the the wisdom there is that um the NBA knows they messed up that’s an obvious mess up
And if the the official says it in the pool report after the game they said in the last two minute report that it should have been a file everybody knows at that point I don’t think he’s going to get fined he should be fine um for
What was such an obvious call that they missed yeah yeah no I agree I agree with that and one of the things that I absolutely loved is when we talk about this fire kind of from Monty Williams and and hoping that the rest of the team
Starts to catch on one of the things that we’ve continued to say especially since we’ve been doing this segment here on the wake up Woodward show is that we want to see this team play with all our hustle all our grit we know they’re going to be outmatched and out talented
Sometimes uh and honestly give yourselves an opportunity to be able to get K Cunningham who doing his rookie season was one of the top five players in the entire NBA as a rookie as it related to clutch minutes and clutch points it led stars in this league like
Demar D rozan and KD to to absolutely give praise to K Cunningham as a baller and saying that he’s the type of player that can wreck an entire team’s defense and to be able to to know that he was supported by his team that way to see
The fire out of him to see him kind of getting that swag back especially over the last five games man it was really really good to see I wanted your thoughts a little bit on Kade Cunningham because we’ve talked about before people talking about this kind of trade him is
He the guy is he the star is this his team you already see what I got on man the K Crusader shirt man so you already know how I feel about this no I think uh Kate is showing in this this last little stretching uh that he 26 32 26 30 points
That that says a lot about um as this team has been struggling he’s been trying to lift this team and get them to where they need to be um and just the the frustration level too with not getting calls that’s the leadership that’s coming out that uh his rookie
Year or or early in his career he may not have said as much about it but now he’s getting to the point where yeah look I we should be getting these calls not even I should be getting these calls we should be getting these calls um and
Don’t look at the record and don’t say that that we don’t deserve it and it’s the same sort of thing is the disrespect only goes so far before you have to do something and say something about it and they’re all starting to do that and that’s a good sign too that they’re just
Not folding the tent and saying H okay well what are we going to do at the end of April um they’re looking that hey this is a building process and we’ve got to um get that respect more than anything else and then it’ll the results start showing up on the court also you
Know what you said something really really interesting to me because when a team is mired and losing a lot of times that can bleed into what a player expects what a player thinks of their team we heard K Cunningham earlier in the year when was still early say we’re
Just a bad team and it can boil down into how you actually play you step out on that court and you feel inferior but to kind of see what this team has been since the trade deadline since you know Allstar break and we said let’s see if
This team can look somewhat formidable a little bit more competitive out there on the uh you on the court I believe that this team they do believe in themselves a little bit more I do think that they believe in the kind of at least the young talent that they have here they’re
Not relying on the Vets you know the kind of the last guard of the Vets muscala Mike muscala the news was reported as well as galinari that there’s going to be byouts the Pistons are going to roll with these young guys who have some chips on their shoulders
Who play defense a little bit better than the previous kind of iteration of this team from the first half and now it seems like and I don’t know where you go to get this fire drummed up for a team that’s won eight games and lost a a record broke the record for losing
Streaks in a row but it seems like they have found some type of foundation that they can stand on and say you know what we know what our record is but we you’re going to try and dispel or disprove that as it relates to the season going
Forward you know that that to me it is huge as it relates to a young team a new coach this kind of assessment of things where they go from here and uh you know one of the things I absolutely liked as well was uh two players that kind of
Were the second and third stars for me I liked what Jay Ivy brought to the table but they needed Isaiah Stewart they really missed him and Simone fono that guy I see your smile over there Sam I see your SM Sone fento has been somebody that has absolutely kind of stepped into
This lineup and we talked about it earlier a player who’s going to carry a chip in the shoulder because a team that drafted him effectively said you know what we don’t want you I don’t even think it would have cost it too much cost too much for the Jazz to bring him
Back but they were just like you know what yeah let’s just kind of move on from you and this guy has come here and absolutely added an element to this team that we really haven’t had all season people just kind of look at the three-point shooting no he plays defense
And gets to the rack much better than what Bo banovich did I even like what Quinton Grimes brings to the table but Isaiah Stewart Sone fanto Jade Navy Jaylen Duran this team is looking like they definitely have kind of this assessment kind of done as it relates to
Who they’re moving forward with and I absolutely like what these kind of supporting pieces can be to this Detroit Pistons team right and you just got to continue with that and and if that number of pieces that are foundational pieces that you’re moving forward with if that
Number expands to five or six you’re good with that if it if you if it goes down a little bit and hey maybe one of these guys that we thought was going to be a key piece isn’t a key piece that’s fine too and and and you this is all
About figuring that stuff out and so hey there there were no misgivings about U muscala and uh galinari that they were gonna somehow be part of the future here I I don’t think anybody thought that at all but these younger guys give them some time see what’s there do is Malachi
Flynn really a piece that you’re gonna look at maybe Quinton Grimes could he be something for you sure you got to give them time and this is the James wisman time where you’ve got to figure out whether this is is or isn’t because going into next year you need to really
Understand um what pieces are going to be there and and what not we’ve seen where Troy Weaver has transformed this roster quickly that’s going to be the assignment for this offseason to is what pieces can you bring in with all of that cap space and it it’s the same idea that
We were talking about with the lions are you going out and getting big guy big fish or are you trying to get depth I think they’ve got to do a mix of the two I think absolutely think they need an All-Star caliber player um so whether
That’s um trading the the the top five pick that they’re going to end up with I think that’s got to be on the table because no nobody in the draft is going to impact this roster um dramatically so you’ve got to look at maybe dealing that
Get an Allstar get a guy who’s going to come in and really help you immediately hey what’s up R this is uh kg and um we always talk about you know what we want to see from the players going down the stretch um and trying to
Make the best of what’s been a a pretty bad season um but what are some things you want to see from Monty Williams uh going forward to finish up the year for M I want to see this same fire I want to see that that he’s coaching
Him up and um that he’s putting some rotations out there that kind of give you an idea of what his philosophy is going to be which players he thinks can play well together and not this kind of scatter shot we’re just putting um 11 different guys out there in the first
Half and then you just see what happens I don’t think you’ve got to be more strategic and more pointed at what your your strategy is going to be with that hey Rod um I was inspired early on in the show maybe coming after last night maybe uh witnessing the recent great
Stretch of play from uh Cade Cunningham to say that I think the Detroit Pistons will win at least 18 games this year I think that they will go on a little bit of a run by their standards and not finish with their worst record in franchise history am I crazy or is that
A real possibility they’re not they’re not going to win too many more than that you are crazy but it’s okay I like the op optimism I don’t I don’t see 18 and and how many do they have left they got another 20 30 some 20 some what are they nine and 4 something
They 24 games left so they’d have to go 9 and 13 at 24 I mean 500 at best 500 at best I’m not even calling for that 9 and 13 but uh no it’s just to me and Rod I I I want to ask you is this is this four game
Stretch since uh since the all after the allstar break is this the best you’ve ever seen Kade Cunningham play because it’s the best I’ve ever seen him play yeah probably if you’re looking at the numbers he’s done some things really really well um during this stretch and there have been times flashes here
During the career but yeah it’s um it’s a good stretch it’s a good stretch that that you can build on but again you look at the roster and say what other pieces are there that he that he should be playing with and and should be succeeding with and it’s just not there
Yet I think we we the best is still yet to come uh but this is a good stretch yeah it’s definitely a good stretch and you know we started the podcast because this is a segment of uh the podcast that we used to run uh over on the Woodward
Pistons YouTube and you guys can also see this clip there a little bit later as well in the wber Pistons YouTube where rod and I have we’ve gone over a 100 episodes now covering the Detroit Pistons from a credential standpoint and trying to make sure that we bring uh the
Most pertinent news the most pertinent quotes as well as give you guys our opinions on the Detroit Pistons and I’m very appreciative of uh my wake up W family because this used to be during the time every Wednesday that we would record but now we’re on the morning show
And Rod has continued uh as a sports editor and chief I know when we started this year the Detroit Pistons be Rider at the Detroit news now it’s Mike Curtis my brother shout out to him uh I continue uh to tell people as well support him support the Detroit News cuz
Rob we’re thankful for your time here and I’m thankful to my guys here for kind of supporting this platform in our second segment that we have you on but um yeah you know Cade Cunningham that’s something we used to do in the Pod the
Cade Zone he’s a guy who and I kind of look at this stretch of games that he’s played in I felt like in his rookie season he definitely had a fire stretch where I think he put up 27 like s and seven uh for some time but when you talk
About what the future can hold with this squad supposedly being the nucleus that they’re going to kind of run it back with uh next season aside from a few pieces here a few parts and pieces here that they’re going to have to bring in I
I’m still one uh for wanting to see what Sone fentuo can do in the starting lineup I’m still wanting to kind of see what they can do as it relates to that fource spot long term but is there anything just not necessarily maybe even a player or maybe a type of player that
You see uh that the Pistons can should keep an eye on as it relates to improvements for next season uh I think J Ivy is is that guy and I want to see more from the uh Kade uran combo too just just feed that to me put
An IV in and just make it all uh Kade uran pick and roll stuff that’s all I want to see is is that thing should be automatic uh and we’ve said throughout the year that that was the thing that um might make or break what this season
Looked like but I want to see more of it I want that to be something you can just lean on when you need a play um just run A5 and see what happens definitely definitely Rod as always man first of all fire zip up right there man Eastern
Michigan it’s dope it’s dope but Rod as always man thank you for your time any last words from the from the crew I just I I realize it nine and 15 get you 18 wins so that’s that that I think that’s possible well and for the record for the
Record I get it I may have sounded like a little bit of a Slappy there I’m not saying that 18 wins is like a crowning achievement especially what the expectations were for to start the season but to have a building block something to hang your hat on something
To look forward to next year I think it would be a nice little feather in the cap especially considering what they just came off of with two losses in a row that were heavily impacted by two bad calls I will meet you halfway and I will
Say 15 okay let’s get to 15 and then we can feel we can feel pretty good about it and I didn’t get to say this earlier Lions fans hang all the banners that you want to forget the Packers things are hang if you want to hang a banner in
Your house hang a banner do what you got do a banner hey R it’s just like you know what I got fire and then I got blue fire man to end this thing that was dope Rod as always thank you for your time guys support the Detroit news they do
Great work over there they’re they’re even better people I’m appreciative of the time that you give us on this platform every single week Rod thank you so much I know the crew is uh is always excited for this segment for the two segments as well um have a blessed day
Brother apprciate you guys and uh chat family man hit that like button for Mr Rod beard too make sure you guys go and peruse the Detroit news as well they do like I said great work over there and they’ve been very very instrumental people at least at making me feel
Comfortable third season out on the Pistons beat they’ve really really gone out of their way to say you know what we’re just here to be good people and to support your journey and now they’re helping us support the wake up Woodward Journey so definitely appreciate that I
Know we got a lot more to talk about that sorry coola can we get a hang the banner quote tweet from uh from Rod Hank whatever he just said about hang all the banners you want that’s a statement we’re definitely going to do that man that’ll probably hit socials at some
Point in time today and I know another segment that I really really liked yesterday and bra uh uh broer and Sam y’all were cooking yesterday we got to talk about this NFL combine we also have what’s trending and I need you all to get your mailbag questions in chat
Continue to hit that like button if you haven’t already and the phone lines are open 31355 26322 and Rod brought a lot of good news man but I got to tell you guys about a little bit of bad news but then I got some more good news as well the good

I honestly feel Monty Williams has someone in the draft he wants and if we can get this player then we won’t trade the pick but if we can’t get this player we may trade for whoever
Maybe we didn't get hosed in our trades. Bogie is coming off of the bench. Burkes has a lesser role in New York. On the flip side, Fonteccio has been better than advertised. Grimes has been great! Even Fournier has been better than expected. There's a blogger that i won't name who spews a lot of Cade-hate! This blogger even explains away Cade's good games, by saying he didn't make the other players better or stacking empty stats. Those of you who are doing this, please STOP the Cade-hate.
Not a fan of them letting go of Muscala.
Maybe he asked out but if he didn't we're supposed to just roll with only Wiseman as the backup??
I wouldn’t mind us trading our pick for a player, like a Markannen or something of the sort. I really like Sarr and Cody Williams though.
I understand people wanting to trade Cade. They're watching him run point and that doesn't translate to wins. It tires him out quicker, it creates less space for him to operate, the team isn't designed for Cade to run the point. Let Ivey run point and you'll watch the win total climb. That being said, trading Cade is still crazy. I blame Monty for the way they play, not Cade.
Pistons will struggle forever without a better coach.
Monty Williams definitely is not plugged in. He's made so many errors and poor judgment calls. I don't have any faith in Gores or Monty. I love our young core and have tons of respect for Troy Weaver
We need to see Monty stagger Cade/Ivey without benching Ivey and playing him 35+ minutes developing him into being a more consistent under control mature version of himself. Unlocking Ivey with this version of Cade takes this team to another level. Weaponizing Ausar is more long term but Ivey can be unlocked right now.
Simone Fontecchio started playing as a starter in Utah ? Utah wons
Simone Fontecchio started playing as a starter in Detroit ? Detroit wons FACTS
The refs has been messing up on us all season. They feel that they can do it without any contesting. They are trained to do so. Now, Monty is speaking out. It's hard to break refs training after doing what they want all season. Monty needed to challenge a lot ghost calls on Duren and the rest of the team. Now, the players are looking more to Monty to speak the hell up!
