The things but let’s let’s get into the Pelicans win over the New York Knicks 11592 as I said this was actually like a really important win for this team you know if they had gone on an 0 and3 skid we’d start to worry about them a little

Bit and when you watch the start of this game they were kind of heading in that direction right this team didn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence in what they were doing particularly offensively they did a good job I thought defensively in the first half and it would have been

Even better without some of the turnovers from the New Orleans Pelicans they had eight in the first half alone leading to some easy transition points for the New York Knicks but the Knicks being short-handed with no Brunson no Julius Randall no Mitchell Robinson and others you needed to get this win right

You needed to just kind of inspire some confidence in this team and it took a little while and it took kind of cracking the lineups it took a very good adjustment from Willie Green in this one but finally it started to get done and that was when the game just got like

Unmu up right there was more spacing and that comes from shooting and that’s why as I titled the episode here Trey Murphy looked back in this game leading score for the New Orleans Pelicans 26 points on the night the big thing is though the six of 11 from three it’s

54.5% seven rebounds four assists no turnovers also had a steal in this one he was awesome in a game where they just needed someone else to step up the New York Knicks were doubling Zion they were taking away the lane Brandon Ingram was even have trouble uh was having trouble

Getting to his spots and getting off uncontested shots at The Rim or mid-range jumpers too because the paint was just crowded and you could see how it was affecting Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram and then Willie Green made an adjustment after halftime when Matt Ryan didn’t play at all in the

First half he played in the second and that was so important I thought he came in immediately hit a three off of a Zion Williamson assist hit another three and then Trey started to get going in this one and the second of those three started falling down you saw Zion have a

Little bit more room to work Brandon Ingram have a little bit more room to work and both of them had very efficient nights Brandon Ingram with 24 points on 18 shot attempts Zion Williams in 21 points on 15 shot attempts we’ll talk more about Zion in the next segment and

In the third segment too there’s something about his game I want to look at too we’ll also talk about Bounce TV and why it was on there versus elsewhere we we’ll talk about that in the third segment too it’s not listed kind of in the show notes with everything here but

You saw that once once the court got spaced right like things looked so much better so much better for this team it’s why that’s important right it’s why it’s important that a guy like Brandon Ingram takes threes as well I was actually just on the lock on Pacers podcast doing a

Guest spot on there since the Pelicans play them the next two nights and they were talking to me about team building on there and I said it’s tough to build around gu two players if they don’t shoot threes they need to compliment each other Zion’s not going to do that

Right like Zion’s not going to go three of seven that’s why we want to see Brandon Ingram take those shots he went three of seven 43% that worked once he started taking those shots you saw the defense start to react to that right like he’s an offensive threat you need

To pay more attention to him teams still don’t cover herb Jones he was three of four 75% from three here and you didn’t see the New York Knicks like shifting their coverage tilting their coverage or anything like that to him to try and defend him they’re going to let him

Shoot those shots cuz he doesn’t have that reputation yet however Brandon Ingram does and you saw how that opened it up Trey Murphy when he’s not in a slump does right Jordan Hawkins has that and even Matt Ryan again two of two has that so Willie Green putting in Matt

Ryan trying to get more spacing out there to kind of unclog the paint was a really great adjustment but this is why Trey Murphy is so important to this team especially if C.J mccullum’s not going to be playing because that kind of changes it a little bit too but Trey in

The starting lineup right going six of 11 willing to pull the trigger shoot the three make the three and some of those deep threes too where okay if you just leave him open he’s going to he’s going to take those shots and if he’s making

Them you know at a good rate teams have to account for it that’s going to open things up for Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram and if you want to win in the playoffs those are the guys that are going to need to carry you going forward

It’s worth noting that for a team where the starters have struggled while it was the St here in this game who are actually carrying this team it would have been very easy in theory for the Pelicans bench to beat up on the Knicks while their starter struggle down a

Number of guys that team gets very thin quickly didn’t need to here I thought that was a very incredibly important thing also look it’s worth noting here that maybe the Pelicans really wanted to get this one Stephen A Smith you know I’m not upset with you Pelicans guys you

Number one Pelicans podcast become an every day or listen Monday through Friday so this game was worrying for a little bit right the offense really struggled in the first half just having 48 total points now they had a lead going in and that I thought was really important but scoring just 48 points

Against a team that was is very very short-handed the Pelicans having zero Rhythm offensively whatsoever is the type of thing that you’re like you guys got to get it together right like that’s going to kind of be what this comes down to for this last stretch run of the

Season I’m I was a little late Rec getting the show going live because I just did our locked on Sports Today Show and did a quick hit for them and when you look at this right like the question for the Pelicans here is not how high their ceiling is the ceiling for this

Team is really really high they’re fifth right now and they’re only two games back in the last column right now of the Los Angeles Clippers like they’re in contention here for even a potentially higher seed than just five the question is not how high is their ceiling their

Ceiling is high the question is will they reach it and it is not a matter of when it’s a matter of if at this point right you’re running out of games I think there are 24 games left to go and this team really struggled in the first half of this game right it

Took the halftime adjustment of putting Matt Ryan in it took Trey Murphy finally getting going and going off right like this is one of those things where if that doesn’t happen you might lose this game and that’s also where the starters were kind of struggling a little bit in

The first half of this this is something that I have long said right you know the Pelicans are close enough record-wise to the Clippers the Nuggets but they’re not talked about in the same category as those teams and they shouldn’t be because those teams you know you can

Rely on the starters there’s some consistency there here a lot of it has been the Pelicans bench getting them them these leads but when you’re only playing like eight guys or so in the postseason you’re not going to be able to do that all the time so if you go up

Against a team where their starters are basically just smoking the Pelican starters that’s a problem I think and that’s how you lose playoff series now if they figure it out and this starting unit starts to work well together and look when you have herb Jones go three

Of four he’s going to be close to 45% probably on the season after this game I don’t have the updated numbers in front of me here right defenses are eventually eventually going to shift their coverage to guard him but it was very obvious that that is not the case in the first

Half of this game so you need to find ways to kind of work around that that is a lot of the time Brandon Ingram setting a screen for Zion Williamson and having him pop out to the three-point line so that when they try and trap Zion off the

Dribble you have Brandon Ingram right there open 43 doing that with CJ McCollum too right they’ve had so much success in years past with Zion Williamson and JJ reic running that kind of you know the inverted pick and roll the the the small big pick and roll like

That that’s worked really well they’ve done a decent job and I’m going to do more more about this this week or next of how they set like screens down low for Zion Williamson you know you’re running pick and rolles for Brandon Ingram for CJ mccum at the top of the

Three-point line you’re doing that like below the free throw line for Zion and that Springs him a little bit but that still has spacing that’s mucked up there’s a lot of actions there’s a lot of things with this team that look very very good but they don’t do them

Consistently or they don’t work consistently and they need to kind of put it all together and figure it out because 48 points against a bad Knicks team Who and the team plays hard for coach Tom Tibido they also have Josh Hart who’s going to give you like all

The energy all the effort and they were out hustling the Pelicans it’s going to burn you in the playoffs if that’s the way that you go with things still so you need to get that kind of figured out sooner rather than later because you

Want to have some time to be able to get some reps in from this before you go into the postseason if you’re like okay now we’re ready hitting our best game one of the postseason you’re probably still G to be in trouble you still are gonna have some things to kind of iron

Out and you definitely want to be playing your best and not just getting there at the start of the postseason so the offense here was still you know very much a struggle at times you know I don’t know if there’s necessarily an answer with the starting unit unless

It’s just the way you kind of have Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson interact and play off of each other more I think really the only way to do that is to put the ball in Zion Williamson’s hands he’s going to draw Defenders away from Brandon Ingram that’s going to open

Things up right we saw bi be aggressive these past two games actually in trying to get to the rim more so than he has in the past and I think you’re starting to see him try and alter his shot chart a little bit more to kind of get into the

Paint more and take some of those shots I’m not saying eliminate all of the mid-range shots here whatsoever I will say this 1 2 3 4 5 he took six he took seven shots from three he took six shots outside of the paint inside of the three-point line that’s trending better

Right but he is very good at scoring at The Rim the season you can see him kind of using his body there needs to be a little bit of space with that that might be when Zion’s off the court and you put more Shooters around him maybe just all

Comes down and putting more Shooters out there right you know that’s kind of the important thing here but when he plays like this and then you get him into his spots in Rhythm those couple of mid-rangers that he hit on the right side of the Court where he gets the ball

Kind of turns around and shoots it like that shot is excellent for him and so when they start doing that I think you can really start to see this team kind of take off but it’s just about refining everything they’re still not doing a great job with that just yet evidence by

The first half in this game it’s also going to make the defense better these things are tied together there’s a really great article in the I think it was the athletic that I just read about Joe Missoula the Boston Celtics head coach you hear me say this all the time

Right you hear me say this all the time good defense leads to easy offense but good offense can lead to good defense too right I look at the game very like cyclically one thing impacts the other which then impacts another thing which then impacts something else then gets

You back to the beginning of everything so on and so forth right you know there’s an article over in the Athletics something you should subscribe to in will gillery of who covers the Pelicans friend of the show is on here often you know talks about how he studies soccer

Man Manchester City in particular on their style of play and how he views things connected counterattacks going into your spacing you know what do you do how does ball movement kind of reflect on passing things like that you even saw someone like Eric spola studying chip Kell’s offenses in college

Football when he was at Oregon to understand spacing and pace which the Miami Heat really kind of ushered in to the NBA you know the Pelicans I don’t think always view things like that right they were down a number of guys here and once they’re no matter who they had out

There the shooters things like that the defense was good partially because they were making shots the team could get back and get set so all of this really starts to impact one another and that’s why this is so important that they try and figure out they did a very good job

Of figuring it out in the second half of this game so I want to talk a little bit about Zion Williamson we talked about him basically all of yesterday and the lack of fowls and things like that and I dove into some of the numbers I want to

Talking about the Pelicans now so Zion Williamson got to the line more in this game and that’s kind of what we wanted to see you know a night after a couple games after where he he didn’t seven of eight from the line in this one Eight’s

A good number for him he’s averaging 6.7 per game Giannis more or less of players that are currently playing leads the league at 11.1 you know I don’t know if he’s 11.1 times going to the line it should be more the ey test backs that up the

Numbers say he should go a little bit more but not like double what he’s doing right now so I think getting him to the line two and a half three times more per game is a very realistic thing and probably the appropriate thing for him

There so it was nice to see him get to the line more in this one but as I watched I watched literally when I did that show every single shot attempt of his and I dove into all of the numbers listen to yesterday’s show if you

Haven’t that’s why you want to be coming every day or you know one of the things that I think he can really do that would help him get to the line more and you’re starting to see it but it’s not quite there yet right like one thing

To note is he is expanding his game a little bit more it’s getting pushed out of the paint a little bit more and into some kind of mid-range territory while still in the paint it’s that 3 to 10 foot range of shot attempts because teams are just Walling it off and he has

To do something else so you’re seeing more of kind of that that floater game right the runner the kind of shot put type of shot that he does those aren’t the best shot attempts but if that’s what you got that’s what you got kind of thing one thing though and this is

Easier said than done that I think he really starts to need to learn to do and he’s going to need a better handle for this is he needs to add a little bit more of a hesitation game to the way that he plays to his back right one of

The things is when he gets a full head of steam like that dude is just moving downhill it’s like a runaway train there’s not a whole lot you can do to kind of hit the brakes there there’s not a stopping power necessarily so once he

Get gets going though if he were to be able to stop and pump fake or put a a small move on or just simply stop right like that I think would get Defenders off of their feet and if they’re already up in the air then you go up with one of

His moves attacking the basket the guy the defender off balance they’re clearly not going to be going up and down and I think that’s when you can really draw a ton of more fowls here that’s as we talked about in yesterday’s show right like Zion and the team are you know have

Culpability in terms of him not getting to the line as much as you would probably like so he needs to add that to his game he needs to get a better handle to do that I think I think if he tried doing that a lot right now he would just

Lose the ball I think that you’ve definitely seen Zion Williamson you know lose the ball more often than that part of it is just going into multiple bodies there’s lots of like arms there it knocks the ball loose they’re also not going to give you a ton of foul calls

Here if you look like you’re just out of control and so he needs to add that aspect of control to his game but stopping pivoting whatever it might be is going to get Defenders off balance then you then you Barrel into them and then I think you’re in a very good

Position to draw fouls get to the line but him going to the line eight times I thought was really good here the Pelicans also hitting nearly 53% of their threes spaced the court out for him gave him some more room to work one of the things I’ve long said in this

Comes from NBA players telling me this and coaches telling me this right you know if the court is spaced the sidelines for the refs are better if there’s bodies in the way they straight up might actually miss foul CL because they can’t see it and they’re not going

To call what they can’t see this could get fixed by them adding a fourth official which honestly might impact like the officiating problem probably makes a difference to the officiating problem here um and I think that’s a really important thing to kind of keep in mind too but getting that handle a

Little bit better a little bit tighter that allows him to do some other moves is going to complement the elite finishing that he has here right like that’s really going to help him and kind of take his game to the next level you know I always get asked over the

Offseason like what do you want Zion to add most to his game is it a jumper is it a float or is it a mid-range game a three-point shot now I want him to get a handle if he gets a slightly better handle he’s going to be pretty

Unstoppable and be able to dance through the paint where he’s already very good at doing that because the body control is there but not losing the ball a little bit more would definitely be a good thing so I’m I I really think he can add to that and that’s where you’ll

Start seeing him get to the line nine 10 11 times per game because Defenders are going to be off balance and that as we talked about in yesterday’s show has a significant impact on this team overall because now all of a sudden the team is in the bonus more so you’re getting easy

Points at the free throw line the most efficient shot in the league so all of that I think is a real big thing that the Pelicans can do to kind of really improve probably not this season but going into next season here one thing that’s worth noting here the game was on

Not on bleet Sports which I think most people are going to be happy about but was on the the gray television station family of stations here which you all don’t really care about you care that it was on Bounce TV as opposed to SP Fox 8

New Orleans right WV u e again you don’t care about those names it’s Fox 8 and Bounce TV you know because Fox is you know that channel is not owned by like Fox the company they’re an affiliate meaning they basically I believe like pay Fox to air programming

Or Fox pays them to air programming you know when things like Jeopardy or Wheel Of Fortune or apparently y’all love this show the what was the floor was what was going on during the Pelicans game they can’t preempt that stuff and put the Pelin game on I think they’re contractually obligated this my

Understanding of it to be a like to play all of that fox kind kind of syndicated affiliate programming so that’s why it was on Bounce TV versus Fox which create sounds like it created some issues this is why I have long said for like a year now that I don’t know if they’re

Necessarily going to put all of the Pelicans games next year on Fox 8 here in New Orleans wvue because that seems to be a bit of a problem if they have Fox 8 programming that they can’t preempt and look there’s a reason this was on Bounce TV instead of fox that

Wasn’t the Channel’s choice they wanted to or the pel choice they wanted to definitely have it on the main Channel it was I believe due to just contractual stuff like that so that’s an important thing to really keep in mind that’s also per a source by the way with all of that

So that’s actually what happened here when it comes to that you know I think there’s only so much Fox pramming they can like take off in favor of other stuff and I think they’re kind of like at that limit essentially hence why this and I believe a couple of other games

Are on Bounce TV as well so that’s just something that kind of added into a little bit of the confusion but good win for the Pelicans I thought happy to see them get the dub in New York really nice after all the Stephen A Smith stuff

Which we’re not going to spend time on here because I don’t care to give him attention and we got more important things to talk about with this team like spacing like offense Zion drawing fouls it was a good performance all around all right it’s going to do it for this
