Again no excuses because here yet another team has some similar injury issues to some of their key contributors and so forth too but um I felt like one of the main things in terms of the keys to the game on tonight was you know keeping it simple keep it simple stupid

Everybody’s heard of you know the kiss analogy keep it simple stupid and when you’re without some of the guys that you don’t have for the Atlanta Hawks that’s something that I feel like you kind of just really need to do don’t try and do anything extra try and keep it really

Basic really general just try to put yourself in a position to where you can are at least within Striking Distance dis fite a bad third quarter um I still think that the Hawks definitely were and it really came down to you know to to

The end um in a game where when you look at some of the more uh key contributors for you know Portland who had dominant Knights uh DeAndre Aon and and uh Anthony Simons who contributed for 69 points um kind of makes you you know beg the question where’s the where’s the

Defense for the Atlanta Hawks and whatnot um but I’m I’m I’m I’m somewhat okay with tonight you know it it it kind of is what it is um I just think that I need a little bit more out of some other players one specific speically and I’m sure that we’ll get

Into that a little bit later but I’m I’m kind of boiling over a little bit with one particular player in general oh okay do tell or are we gonna hold that thought um I would love to tell okay okay so I’m not sure how familiar you

Are with sign language okay do you know what this means T NRA I can’t remember I used to know oh my God just tell us just just break that that and and and I’ve been I’ve been going through this te trying to teach my daughter a little bit during dinner time

That means more okay and that’s what I need out of the guy who you moved up for to in the draft to go get him at number four I like to remind the people and that’s DeAndre Hunter has he been playing well as of late recently and so

Forth since coming off the bench D yes is that the expectation for deand Hunter absolutely um all things being said this isn’t about minute restrictions this isn’t about injury this ain’t about coming off the bench you come off the bench for that offensive Firepower you

Come off the bench to bring some of that I guess a boost of energy and a boost of scoring for this team you didn’t get that on tonight 11 points four for 12 from the field um you know that’s 33% last time I checked public or private

School I don’t know and one for six from the three the bigger the biggest deciding factor there is the fact that he didn’t defend anybody I didn’t see any rebounds I didn’t see him swinging the ball around if you’re not going to make shots at least swing the ball around put guys in

Positions to where they can convert on shots that’s something else that he didn’t do and I have a humongous problem with number 12 on tonight I do too when I look at the bench that’s all you had really was DeAndre Hunter and thank God TR Trent Forest gave you a little bit

With six points Bruno Fernando gave you a little bit with six points Garrison Matthews gave you a little bit with eight points all of that’s fine but DeAndre Hunter for all intents and purposes you are the bench for this team and yes 11 points in 33 minutes that’s

Not that’s not really a minute restriction for all intents and purposes so yeah when you’re on that court for 33 minutes we have to expect way more from you than you’re getting a point every per every three minutes ain’t gonna work not not with what this team is in need

Of so I was just curious to see kind of who that guy was and I couldn’t agree with you more because any little thing from him whether that would have been 15 points or 16 points the Hawks win this game or three four five rebounds not one that

Ain’t it that’s not it so you know I agree with Brian he said it’s a bad loss and to me I say the same this to me is the definition of a bad beat I have tried to make it make sense and nope I’m not going to fall on the sword of the

Injury B because hey it hit the Blazers as well so if all things are equal then I still expect you to win because I still expect that just like them you’re the team that should be able to dig it out of the mud and figure out figure it

Out get it done so I there were just some sneaky things like you said one of them was that another one was how do you shoot nearly 44% from the field and nearly 36% from three how do you do that and still lose the game well DeShaun you said it

You you lose the game because of two things number one you lose the game because when the Blazers in those waning seconds collapse on dejonte Murray and he makes the right decision to kick the ball out but you can’t do anything with the kick out except turn the ball over

That’s gonna that’s pretty much going to be a loss every single time I think the other piece there is this didn’t expect a whole heck out a lot out of you defensively but if you would have just up ticked a little bit like you got destroyed on the the boards as far as

Offensive rebounds this team this Blazers team had 37 defensive rebounds so what they basically said is at double and triple dog dare you to try to get a ball whenever dejonte Murray doesn’t make it because the rest of you we know ain’t making it so what we’re going to

Do is just stand under this basket and keep getting these boards until these boards get us a win and that’s another thing that allowed us to see the result that we saw tonight also how do you hit six threes in the third quarter Hawks and lose the quarter by 12 whole points

Oh wait a minute I know you don’t defend yeah this that theme is problematic to me like I really really have a problem with that and I think that in order for you to win also it’s okay to put it at DJ’s feet like DJ can

Take over a game as he took over a game but I think Dr slick makes a great Point as well he says you can’t have just three players in double digits and expect to win and I have to agree with them on that one because if two of

Those three players double digits look like 13 and 11 to go with the 40 that’s not going to offset 33 36 and 12 very well sure sure the math ain’t G to math no of course not and and for this to be you know a game where I thought that the

Hawks really needed to flex its experience muscles a little bit just because you have so many newer guys and newer roles and just younger players in general W being welcomed to the NBA for um for Portland this was a game where I think that that was something an area or

A department in which the Hawks you know really needed to exercise if they wanted to win this game uh furthermore from that is you know when you’re when when you’re looking at the way that they approach this game I I’m thinking to myself like okay Portland’s really

Not getting anything but just a bunch of twos Atlanta’s going to be you know obviously they’re thin in the front Court they’re going to try to go out there explosively with you know putting up a lot of three-point shots like we got so used to hearing head coach Quinn

Snyder say coming into the season and they’re going to be an exchange of two for threes and Portland is not going to be able to keep up you know Chris Murray a fairly relatively new player to the NBA wasn’t particularly shooting well uh Anthony Simons is really the only other

Piece that you have so their options are really kind of limited yes you had DeAndre Aon but those were all twos um people may be questionable and wondering how come I don’t put so much blame on bugy bonovich um which I’m willing to give him a little bit of a

Pass for tonight obviously not doing well and I’m going to tell you why real quick before we wrap up and go to the break eight points sure I understand that he had a bad night but eight assists and seven rebounds I know that he shot it bad on tonight but he also

Tried to make a difference in other ways something that DeAndre Hunter did not do you know who else had eight assists and seven rebounds that was Anthony Simons who affected the game not just with his scoring but doing other things the same way that bogy bonovich did so that’s why

I’m a little bit more okay with it need something a little bit different at least a confidence boost I’m that’s last time I’m tired of kind of talking about DeAndre Hunter when it comes to the confidence issue yeah yeah I’m kind of past that as well when we come back

The entire 12 the Blazers on the other hand didn’t score for almost four minutes of that quarter it’s like something like nine or ten empty possessions for them and then all of a sudden this team wakes up and scores 30 points in about eight minutes yeah all I

Want to know and granted a big part of that was Anthony Simons going five of nine but all I want to know from you is this who is responsible for this was it not putting a body on Simons because Hey DJ was scoring he was the only scorer so

You can’t really blame him but I mean was that what it was about or is it because Quinn didn’t send help not that they had a lot of help to send but I’m just asking what the heck happened yeah I think that you put something like that on obviously on the

Team um outside of that it’s really hard to kind of point the finger at number five who has to do so many different things for this team being Deonte Murray score the basketball rebound the basketball lead the team have all you know be playing all these different roles and wearing all these

Different hats can’t put it on the guy who just had his fifth career 40-point game by the way three of them against the Portland Trailblazers can even imagine if I’m just being honest had we I mean I’ll be honest with you and I’m definitely going to answer the question

But I can’t I still when there’s instances like these and games like these and the way that de has kind of gone off I still can’t imagine can you imagine what this team would look like especially on a night like tonight had you dealt him during the trade deadline

Like that still gives me real nightmares I would love to show you guys what that looks like but I don’t think everybody wants to see what I had for dinner tonight therefore I’m pointing a finger at everyone else except for him including the coaching staff because you

Have to figure these things out I needed to see a little bit more effort if you can’t get the ball to go in the basket we all understand we’ve all had times where it just wasn’t our night not even just shooting the basketball but just whatever you do in your professional

Career however you make your money and pay your bills every day it’s not always going to be your night we overstand that but you have to be able to do the little things getting on the ground after loose balls creating Second Chance points being a stickler on the defensive end

Being a defensive anchor those are the things that take effort yes some technique but it doesn’t take a ton of skill I’m not talking about being an elite Defender but just putting forth some effort to just try and like they couldn’t even cover the baby with a

Blanket during nap time for crying out loud yeah ultimately it comes down to the other guys buggy is not an exception just because he did you know affected the game in other ways outside of scoring you still have to be able to defend I didn’t see enough people that

Was willing to take pride on the defensive side on tonight if I’m just being honest well you couldn’t have because like you said it takes and this is one of those situations where we use the cliche of oh it took a it would have taken a village because it took a

Village on the other side as well and you know Des I was I’m doing some of course other work there with uh the swack basketball tournament right and the number one seed on the men’s side of the bracket was absolutely on the ropes tonight right I mean just taking body

Blows from like the number eight seed and this was a team that they lost to like four days ago but when they when the number eight seed ends up going on a 130 run and the number one seed can’t buy back bucket you know what they did

They took a timeout and locked down on defense when I tell you that team did not score again for like the last two minutes of the quarter and then came back from halftime and struggled to score that’s what you have to do to save off things to save off disaster until

You can get a basket to go down or if you can’t get a field goal to go down take it inside or at least try to take it inside and get some buckets from the free throw line just do whatever it takes if it doesn’t look like what it

Normally gets you but I think sometimes that’s a challenge because I would say this too DeShaun some of those numbers with field goals and with the three-pointers are probably sneaky good because I do do still think that there were probably times that the Hawks sat

On well surely one of our goals you know a bucket from inside is going to go oh surely at some point we’re going to get hot again from the three point line but I think that three-point number is actually predicated on those threes they were able to hit in that second quarter

Versus across the entirety of that game and I think sometimes that’s where it gets a little bit tricky and you know Beasley you make a great point I mean I think everybody would love the Hawks to be back good again but I kind of tend to

Agree with AJ in that this West Coast I I don’t want to call it awful AJ after just one game because I don’t want to sound overly dramatic but what I do think is that this is showing us some things that make us a little bit nervous deshaan because

The other piece of that is this we’re talking about what happened in the second quarter and what a heads scratcher it was and I think you make a great point it was more about effort maybe even more so than lack of execution but that third quarter is what

Was most bothersome because that’s been the problem all along for the Hawks every time we break things down and try to figure out what went wrong it always seems to point itself back to the third quarter and what the Hogs didn’t do and what the other team said oh wait a

Minute they weren’t they already weren’t playing defense yeah but now they’re not playing defense and their shots aren’t going in we’re GNA go ahead and just run we’re g to run right rough shot and the third quarter I don’t care if the Hawks won the fourth quarter by three points

The third quarter is where you let Portland back into the game and that’s that 35 to 20 three score in that third quarter that’s what happened 13-6 run by the Blazers to open the second half that’s where that game ended well if I’m if I’m just being honest T the third

Quarter hasn’t necessarily been something that has just been an issue this year that has been something that has been going on for the last few years if I’m just being real with you um when you really you know break down that third quarter we’re talking about port

Obviously outscoring the Hawks 35 to 29 shooting 59% from the field which I mean if you look at what they did in the first half that is a complete turnaround so obviously Portland made adjustments that Atlanta clearly didn’t the fast break points um being something that neither one of these teams defensively

Do a very good job at stopping the ball which is honestly Elementary if I’m being honest um um that’s something that they didn’t do outscored 10 to zero in the third quarter in terms of Fast Break points so that just goes to let you know there was no stopping the ball there was

No defensive mentality and then they were outrebounded something that you talked about in the first segment 14 to5 another thing that not does necessarily take a lot of skill that is effort that is technique that is putting a body on a guy that is finding your man when that

Ball goes up in the air turning around you know putting your behind on them boxing them out and running towards the basketball so that you can get ready to start a break of some sort something that obviously this team did not do which is another reason behind why they

Lost but in the next segment um as I know we’re getting ready to wrap that is something else that I think that uh I have some keys to something that this team needs to do to try to secure a win against Utah on Friday that they didn’t

Can control so obviously we talked about control what you can that’s the mindset and the mentality that this team has to have when they’re going into Utah on Friday um indeed free throws is one of those things that is controllable nobody’s running at you I know that

There’s you know thousands of fans with thunder sticks and what whatever else what have you in the background behind the backboard outside of that it’s just you on an island all by yourself got to shoot better than 66% like you did on tonight um the other side of that is 15

Turnovers is not going to cut it ball protection I would much rather you take a ill-advised shot and have a 5050 chance at making or missing the shot than to give the ball to the other team and give them an opportunity to have their 5050 so between turnovers

And um and shooting free throws I think ultimately is the one now I I did feel like coming into tonight’s game um which I thought was their most winnable game obviously you got to take advantage um for a little bit of confidence you know to prepare for an extensive road trip

They still have that chance to do that because the teams they’re going to face after Utah is just going to be much more strenuous they’re going to need some confidence going into those other three games it starts right here with the Utah Jazz control what you can can’t control

You can’t go back and change anything from tonight’s game so that’s what you have to do and buggy bonovich and and uh DeAndre Hunter a combination of those two you’ve got to be minimum combined for you know 30 or more points yeah something that they didn’t get um on

Tonight and um Utah is on a you know three- game losing streak and has lost a ton of games out of the last probably 10 uh I think they’re maybe like 2 and eight or something around that range so you just have to be one of those

Teams to add a number to the right side of their result column yeah I think that’s a great call that we hadn’t talked about earlier in the show and that’s free throws the Hawks are one of the better shooting free throw teams in the association so for them to shoot

66.7% that is just unacceptable because when you dig in remember we’re talking earlier about how you’re digging into the numbers of what if DeAndre Hunter’s rebound numbers look different that might have win or if bonovich had hit a couple more shots that might have been a

Win but when you go 12 of 18 from the free throw line that’s your six points you lost by four period so I really like the fact that you called that out because that’s something that that should speaks to fundamentals I mean just do the basics

And that might get you a win and like you said that allows you to then go into LA and when you prepare to take on the Clippers when you prepare to take on the Lakers and granted the Clippers this would be that that’s going to probably be a tall

Order but the Lakers you’ve actually beaten them this year so there’s an opportunity there for you but I do agree with you that it starts with how the Hawks approach the game in Utah try to get back to basics everybody just try to do your job like no one even has to play

Out of their minds except but um even him dropping 40 is not him playing out of his mind that’s still DJ playing a game that DJ is truly capable of but everybody else has to at least play their game when you think about bgan banovich and DeAndre hunter in
