Wolves played in November this team is way different than they were in November but obviously with the with the Carlon towns absence there’s a lot of lineup stuff to talk about we did it a bit Thursday but I want to dig a bit deeper as well to see what uh Chris Finch could

To the YouTube channel over at lockdown Sports Minnesota all right so lineup data we talked a little on Thursday about um some of the different combinations that chrisf could look at and and specifically we spent most of our time Thursday focusing on how successful the Rudy lineups have been without Carlon

Towns and that was a that was a key component or that was a um really the focus of Thursday show and one of the key reasons why I think this team had there is um there are there are strong possibilities that the wolves or a strong possibility the Wolves could

Still have success here moving forward now the big thing there is that those defensive lineups are so good right we talked about that already and I’m gonna pull it right back up here just so I can um quickly reiterate it so remember the timber rules defense with Anton Rudy on

The floor and Carlon towns off the floor is a 100th percentile defense and is allowing just 100.8 points per 100 possessions for context the timber roles as a team are like around 108 points per possession so um and that’s not a knock on cat defensively although the the

Lineups with nas on the floor instead of cat at the four are actually better defensively but cat’s been good this year as well all that to say Rudy ant is a two-man without towns on the floor 100th percentile defense they’re only a 46 percentile offense but overall that still gives them a 998th

Percentile plus minus right A plus 14 is the differential with with Rudy ant sans’s cat lineups and we talked a little bit about how the current starting lineup or the lineup that they’ve used most frequently when cat’s been out this year Conley Edwards McDaniels goar and Anderson at

The four is just a 25 2 percentile lineup a minus 6.6 however if you sub Nas in for Kyle Anderson it becomes a plus 16.7 in 82 percentile unit and then if you bring in Ni Alexander Walker slide Anderson to the three and take off McDaniels take off Conley it becomes a

98th percenti out unit thir a plus 35 that’s ant and Alexander Walker in the back court Anderson at the three which we’ll talk more about today and then Nas and Rudy in the front court so really interesting and these are all relatively small sample sizes but we’re still

Talking between 150 and 200 possessions for these units so um It’s not nothing right we’re starting to see a picture here once you get kind of over that 100 I mean that’s relatively arbitrary but uh once you get over 100 perc possessions you start to see a bit more

Of a legitimate sample size okay so I want to focus specifically on uh Kyle Anderson at the three to start here because I think that’s pretty interesting and remember last year he played primarily the four back when he was in Memphis he played a lot of small

Ball five too and one of the things I’ve talked about on the show and one of my concerns over the offseason was with the contract that Nas received and essentially the doubling down on going big because we never really saw it for any extended period of

Time last season I was worried that Kyle Anderson would mostly play the three this year and that he would struggle that’s mostly happened right I mean he’s played the majority of his minutes at the three and he hasn’t been as good as he has been last year and

He’s been the source of a lot of consternation Among Wolves fans now I want to be clear Kyle erson is still a good player he’s still been an effective player overall this year especially defensively but no he has not look comfortable offensively and the fact that he went from shooting over 40% on

Corner threes last year albe at unlimited volume to now shooting 20% this year with no confidence in teams daring him to shoot that’s a big problem and we talked about spacing I think on Wednesday’s show uh maybe it was Tuesday’s show I don’t know basketball party Wednesday one of the shows this

Week or probably more than one show we talked about spacing and the uh the downturn that both slowmo and Jade McDaniels have taken from three and how that’s hurt the Wolves so I’m not discounting that at all uh but that’s that’s part of the you know delving into

These numbers here we have to look at how slow-mo is done at the three this year or how those lineups have looked and I’ll tell you what slow-mo lineups at the three without carony towns have actually been positive I know that sounds crazy but it’s true now it

Changes a little bit if you add towns to the mix but I want to look at it without carony towns on the floor okay so here’s here’s what I plugged into cleaning the glass these numbers are all I should have said this earlier all my numbers

Right now are from cleaning the glass so without cat on the floor slowmo Nas and Rudy lineups so this means slomo at the three Nas at the four Rudy at the five regardless of anybody else who’s on the floor it’s only 674 possessions and there’s only one lineup that’s played over 100

Possessions and it’s that lineup I referenced a minute ago Anon Alexander Walker in the back court slowmo at the three and then Nas and Rudy those lineups have played 183 possessions which is not a nothing sample and it’s a plus 35 98th percentile offense which floored me okay 97th percentile defense not

Surprising that specific lineup okay an 89th percentile offense 131 point. one points per 100 possessions for a lineup with Kyle Anderson at the three and that’s the lineup with two non-shooters on the floor Rudy and Kyle Anderson but Nas Alexander Walker and an are all on some level threatening three-point

Shooters for for the defense now as we saw in the second half mostly of the Clippers game on Tuesday when slowmo is on the floor with that sort of a lineup he’s basically running the offense he’s pretty much playing point guard so he’s the nominal uh small

Forward like he is the small forward based on how those positions lay out but he’s effectively running the offense and uh that’s worked right especially like if the opposing team plays his Zone that’s an automatic you plug slowmo and he gets to the nail and he he distributes because you have three

Shooters and then Rudy down low looking for a lob and SLO is a fairly good lob thrower uh We’ve also seen him turn the ball over quite a bit on that attempt this year but again it’s the threat of the lob to Rudy for you know he gets a

Seal and he gets an easy dunk or and or a foul or it’s a kick to you know Nas n or ant on the perimeter those offenses or or th that unit it’s also a very big unit with SLO at the three and to Alexander Walker and and

And to the back court uh it’s it’s offensive rebounded much better than most Timberwolves units this year it also gets the line quite a bit the only problem is turnovers which you could say about the Wolves uh you know more broadly this year of course but it’s

Actually not all that you know it’s not any worse than their normal turnover rate which isn’t good but still there aren’t any other slow-mo at the three lineups that have played over 100 possessions there’s one that has played 91 possessions and that’s with Mike Conley at the point and otherwise

The same so with no ant so Conley Alexander Walker slow-mo Nas and Rudy 91 possessions of plus 10.9 so also positive um in fact three of the top four are are at least a plus 10 so overall again over 674 possessions Kyle Anderson at the three without Carlon towns on the

Floor is a 97th percentile plus 12 point differential a 99th percentile defense the offense overall is just 52nd percentile which will work if you’re playing 99th percentile defense right that’s kind of the the story of the Wolves this year but specifically with ant and Alexander Walker in the back court and Nas and

Rudy that lineup has been really really good now if you factor in Carl towns things will start to look a little bit different uh not a lot different because he hasn’t actually played that many minutes at the three with Carl towns on the floor um and so but that’s that’s

How I plugged this in it was without cat on the floor because that’s kind of that’s the reality we’re living and I say that they’ve actually only played oh no wait I did that wrong um yeah it does get a little bit different here because then you have to take off

Uh uh let’s see yeah it it looks trust me it looks a little bit different it’s not as good there hasn’t been too many minutes that way though uh we don’t see slow-mo on the floor often as the three with Carlton towns on the floor um at

Least to this point this season so what I want to do next is I want to look at uh Na when he with some of the different starting combinations I also want to look at Rudy and Nas together which we briefly touched on uh we’re going to do

Here in terms of Nik Alexander Walker as a starter um we’ve seen nikel Alexander Walker I mean like at times he’s effectively played a six-man role it’s It’s tricky because so has Nas Reed and early year the idea was Shake miltonwood uh that obviously didn’t really work out

But specifically n minutes with Anthony Edwards and with Jade McDaniels is something I think we need to look at because there’s a good chance that they start together here moving forward and those minutes actually haven’t been all that great um now I advocated a little bit the other day Jack Borman was a

Little bit more aggressive about this on the postcast Tuesday and then also on the Minnesota basketball party Wednesday say that he thinks na should start keep bringing Nas Off the Bench um to this point this season Niki Alexander Walker minutes with so on cleaning the glass I

Plugged in Alexander Walker with ant and Jade McDaniels and not necessarily Mike connley so some of these minutes include Mike connley some of them don’t but in minutes where ant and Alexander Walker have been in the back court and McDaniels has been on the floor this team is just a 52 percentile overall

Team it actually has a slight negative a minus point3 Point differential 50th percentile defensively which surprised me 52nd percentile offensively now we’re talking about the Timber’s best three perimeter Defenders right Alexander Walker McDaniels and Anthony Edwards those three together on the floor at the same time is just a

50th percentile defense I couldn’t tell you why other than that Mike Conley brings a lot of value at the point of attack um in fact their most used lineup has over 200 possessions this really surprised me over 200 possessions and it’s with Carlon towns and Rudy Gober

And it’s just a 54th percentile te uh unit overall and a 21st percentile defense that’s right Anthony Edwards Niki Alexander Walker Jade McDaniels carony towns and Rudy goar four of whom we would say are the Wolves four of their best five if not their best four overall defensive players ant n

McDaniels Rudy plus cat who’s been good defensively this year is allowing 122.32 possessions played together the offense though has been good it’s a 78 percenti offense so that really surprised me um now we also have to look at it without Carl 3 towns since he’s not going to be

Here so it goes overall that unit goes from 650 possessions and uh 52 percentile to just over 300 possessions but it’s not been good it’s been a minus 17.3 in just over 300 possessions to have Alexander Walker ant and Jaden all together in the back court without Carl towns on the floor so

I don’t know what Chris Finch is going to roll out on Saturday night and the Jazz are maybe you know we’ll talk in a minute here about the Jazz injury report we don’t really know who’s going to be available they’ve been struggling they’re on a back toback so maybe this

Is the time we try it and obviously Alexander Walker going back to Utah Rudy going back to Utah maybe you put them both in the starting lineup and your starting lineup is uh you know McDaniels at the four because that’s effectively what this would be right it would be

Conley um connley Edwards Alexander Walker McDaniels and goar which incidentally that unit specifically has only played 2 position possessions together excuse me Conley Edwards Alexander Walker McDaniels at the four and goar has only played 32 possessions but they’re a plus 33.8 and that falls into this category that overall is a minus

17.3 and the number one used lineup that’s a slight negative has Nas at the four instead of McDaniels so there’s a lot of noise here there’s a lot going on uh in terms of these different combinations but the point here is that they’re going to have to try something that hasn’t been successful

To this point in a small relatively small sample and see if they could kind of you know uh bust out of that and make it be a little bit more positive because they only have so many combinations they can go to and they’re not going to start

Both Alexander Walker and Nas right one of but the slow-mo thing hasn’t necessarily worked in the starting lineup so I mean I’m very curious to see what Chris Finch does I would give this a stab because again that specific lineup so the same starters that that

Were out there uh you know against the Clippers in a couple games ago not the Lakers game but the game before that with Anderson or excuse me uh yes with Anderson at the four that same lineup but with McDaniels at the four four instead of Anderson and Alexander Walker

In the starting lineup so better way of saying that would be the exact same starting lineup but with Alexander Walker instead of Anderson is a plus 33.8 in 32 possessions painfully small sample but there could be something good there if the Timberwolves you know play that out a bit first

Further let’s also briefly talk about Rudy and Nas together on the floor without Carlon towns uh which I guess usually that’s the case other than the uh the monster lineup that they played a little bit um which that’s another there’s a lot of reasons why it’s sad

That town isn’t out there but it I was hoping the Wolves would continue using the three Center Line it more often to kind of see what happens um Rudy and Nas without cat as we talked about a little bit on Thursday’s show is a 98th percentile Unit A Plus 12.7 Point

Differential 100 percentile on defense uh just 33rd percentile offensively the number one used lineup there is ant Alexander Walker Anderson at the three once again Nas and Rudy goar and they’ve been really good on both ends including offensively so I do think there’s a lot there that the Wolves could

Unlock and it’s worth exploring that further it’s worth it’s worth um using that specific combination more often which again is slow-mo at the three which I’ve never advocated for but the numbers this year suggest as long as the offense is running through him and he’s not simply just standing in the corner

As a complete non-threat and then you know catching pump faking a half-hearted like short like super short close out and then driving into traffic that’s not the most effective use of Ky Anderson but if they could put him in the middle of the floor and have him facilitate there could be something

Positive there so all that to say goar and Nas lineups together have been good but I also am not advocating to start NS necessarily at this point unless things really go sideways here over the next few games all right let’s talk about the Jazz next and the Wolves upcoming

Lost four of five and more more broadly have really struggled over the past several weeks they do take on Atlanta I think in Atlanta on Friday night so no that can’t be right there’s no way they’re traveling from Atlanta I’m going to check that real quick there’s no way

They’re flying from Atlanta to to Salt Lake City on a backtack I’m going to make sure that’s not yeah they’re at home against Atlanta they’ve been at so they lost the Celtics at home on Tuesday had a couple days off have Atlanta Friday night so second night of a

Back-to-back against Minnesota and then of course the wolves are there again Monday night it’s weird the Wolves haven’t played Utah since November 30th they played them twice in November and haven’t seen them since so we’re talking nearly three months uh no wait nearly four months three and a half months

Since the w seen the Jazz uh the last time around Minnesota did not have Anthony Edwards and they did not have Jaden McDaniels in fact it was one of the few games that desan Nicks played rotation minutes Troy Brown Jr started in that game and the Wolves won easily

They won by 11 uh they they really pulled away in the third quarter and in Utah made it a little more interesting in the fourth quarter but Minnesota had a 35o third CAD had a monster game 32 and 11 Rudy had 15 and 13 um and both

Games by the way have been at Target Center the wolves have played Utah twice home Roy Brown started in that game played well uh Des Nicks played rotation minutes Jake Milton played 20 minutes off the bench in this game so the team looked very different back then Alexander Walker did start in the

Absence of janen McDaniels and scored 20 points had seven assists five rebounds five Steals and two blocks against his former team so uh not surprisingly Alexander Walker wants to play against his forward team and play well the first game between the two was just the fifth

Game of the season and the Wolves at the time were two and two coming in and Alexander Walker was scoreless in that game Minnesota was full strength um and uh and that was another one of those games Minnesota was up six at halftime but pulled away in the third quarter was

Up 16 going to the fourth and ended up winning by 28 in that game uh cat had 25 and seven ant had 318 and six so we had one really big ant game he missed the second one cat had a really big second game and Alexander Walker was huge too in that

First game Nas was also really good Off the Bench it’s unclear who exactly is going to be available for the Jazz they’ve already announced that on Friday night Chris Dunn’s gonna sit out former wolf lottery pick top 10 pick Chris Dunn is is out for rest on Friday so seems

Like he may play Saturday Markin and’s been out for five six games with a I think a quad um so seems unlikely he’ll play Saturday and obviously that’s a big deal if Lorie markon doesn’t play um this matchup for Minnesota it it’s it’s not like I mean the Jazz play Fast which

Isn’t perfect um they’re also a good offensive rebounding team which makes me a little bit nervous but um defensively like there’s not I mean they’re they’re the second worst defense in the league according to I’m looking at basketball reference now second worst defense in the league um they they really the only

Thing they do well is they don’t foul a ton which of course the Wolves haven’t begin to line a ton lately anyway uh which is something we’re tracking here um the Jazz do turn it over a lot and the wolves have done a better job lately of turning over opponent offenses but

Without marking it it changes what they can do offensively quite a bit um I mean they just they’re a good three-point shooting team but outside of marinin like they just are less rotation guys in this version of the Jazz you know post trade deadline Jazz that are going to

Hurt you from Deep um so as long as the Wolves close out under control they get back defensively because Utah’s top 10 in Pace they do get to the line a fair amount um and don’t get if the Wolves don’t get themselves into foul trouble and we don’t know also who’s available

For the Wolves because all the guys that have been questionable for the last week are questionable again on Friday um you know wouldn’t shock me if Monte Morris got another day off we know Rudy had the rib contusion at the end of the game Tuesday so we’ll see if three days

Later I I’d be surprised if he didn’t play in his old stomping grounds in Salt Lake City so we don’t know yet who’s going to be available for Minnesota but assuming it’s the same guys that were available Tuesday this should be a Timber rols win

Utah can be sneaky good at home right we we know that they’re they’re traditionally a good home team earlier this year it seemed like they were going to shoot have a shot at the play in now they’re I think six games back uh of the play play in is that right yeah six

Games back from Golden State so they’re not going to make the play in um but still they’ve got the best uh Point differential of any non-playoff team well I guess Houston’s a little bit better um but they’ve been struggling lately I I think it really hinges on if

Markin is available if Markin is not available there’s no reason the Wolves shouldn’t be favored by eight or nine points even on the road in this one H maybe not eight or nine seven or eight points and they should win there is no line yet at FanDuel because Utah plays

Friday night we’re recording this Friday morning so um you know not sure what that is going to look like but if Minnesota does well in transition and doesn’t get themselves into foul trouble they should be in good shape against uh you know a bit of a depleted maybe not

The right word a bit of a short-handed Utah team that’s been struggling quite a bit and is on the second night of a back-to-back upcoming schedule for Minnesota it’s Utah Saturday it’s Utah again at Utah on Monday night um and then things uh stiffen up a bit for the

Wolves in terms of the schedule they get the Nuggets when they return home after the uh the six game Road Trip then they get two days off at home which is great but then they get the Cavs then they get the Warriors and then the Pistons to round out the the home

Stand but then they go at Denver um and by the way that Denver matchup this first one is on Tuesday so they travel home after Monday night at altitude at Salt Lake City after being at altitude for three days four days probably um travel home to for a back-to-back

Against Denver who will have a rest Advantage will have not played the night before so uh that Nuggets game on Tuesday which of course we’ll talk about next week is going to be a tough one for for Minnesota but uh would be really big

To bank a couple of wins here by the way since the last time the Wolves played OKC and Denver have both won so OKC and Denver are tied for the number one spot in the west Minnesota’s a full game back sitting here right now uh but a chance

To you know lock in that three spot with a couple not they wouldn’t fully lock it in obviously but take a good step in that direction by beating Utah twice as they should do over the weekend and or I guess uh Saturday Monday and then Denver

Is going to be tough on Tuesday with the rest and the travel and the whole thing and obvious VI ly no cat but if they can steal a game against Denver and make sure that they’re at least breaking even in the tie break and they won’t lose a

Tiebreaker to Denver of course they have the one advantage but they still have three more against Denver that would be really big we’ll talk more about that next week all right that’s all we have for you today here on the show of course postcast after the game Saturday night
