Stories From the Hardcourt with José Calderón | Raptors Show Clips

THE RAPTORS SHOW. I’M YOUR HOST WILL LOU. JOINING US AS PROMISED BEFORE THE BREAK, A FORMER FAN FAVORITE. PROBABLY A FOREVER FAN FAVORITE, JOSE CALDERON FORMER RAPTORS POINT GUARD. SECOND ALL-TIME IN RAPTORS ASSIST. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A LONG-TIME RAPTORS FAN. EVERYONE KNOWS WHO JOSE IS.

NUMBER ONE. HOW ARE YOU, JOSE? >> GOOD. HOW ARE YOU GUYS? >> Will: DOING WELL. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO JOIN US. WE WITH WANTED TO TALK ABOUT YOUR TIME WITH THE RAPTORS. KIND OF GO BACK A LITTLE BIT AND JUST GO THROUGH YOUR CAREER.

WE WANTED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT SPANISH BASKETBALL AS WELL. THEN JUST A COUPLE OF ASSORTED QUESTIONS THAT HAVE REALLY COME UP RECENTLY. BUT YEAH, IF YOU’RE GOOD WITH THAT, I’D LIKE TO START WITH YOUR TIME IN TORONTO. OF COURSE YOU CAME HERE ALMOST

20 YEARS AGO NOW. BUT DO YOU REMEMBER HOW PICK OF A CULTURE SHOCK WAS IT WHEN YOU FIRST CAME TO THE NBA? >> IT WAS A LITTLE BIT. IT WAS A LITTLE BIT. THE ISSUE MORE THAN ANYTHING WAS MY LANGUAGE. A FEW TIMES I TALK ABOUT THIS

STORY ABOUT, YOU KNOW, CALLING PLAYS AND PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND. IT WAS A LITTLE BIT HARD. WE SWITCHED FROM VOICE CALLS TO JUST SIGNS BECAUSE PEOPLE FELT MORE COMFORTABLE WITH SIGNS. SO IT WAS A STRUGGLE. THAT FIRST YEAR WAS TOUGH. WE HAD, YOU KNOW, GREAT TEAMMATES.

IT’S TRUE THAT THEY HELPED ME A LOT. BUT BEING POINT GUARD, COMING FROM EUROPE, NOT REALLY SPEAKING A LOT OF ENGLISH, THAT WAS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST SHOCK OF ALL. IT WAS AN AMERICAN CITY, BUT STILL EUROPEAN, SO THAT HELPED RIGHT AWAY.

>> Will: DID YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY MOMENTS IN TERMS OF, LIKE, A LANGUAGE BARRIER OR — I KNOW YOU SPOKE ENGLISH, JUST MAYBE NOT AS STRONGLY AS YOU DO NOW. BUT DID YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY MOMENTS OF MISUNDERSTANDING WITH PLAYERS WITH JUST, AGAIN, THAT LANGUAGE GAP?

>> THERE’S TWO THINGS. ONE THING WHEN THEY WERE LAUGHING IN THE LOCKER ROOM, I WASN’T SURE IF THEY WERE LAUGHING ABOUT ME OR , YOU KNOW, OF ME. SO THEY LAUGH, I LAUGH. BUT I HAVE NO IDEA. SO MAYBE THAT’S WHY THEY WERE, LIKE, THIS GUY IS COOL.

BECAUSE HE’S LAUGHING. [Laughter] I DIDN’T REALLY KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE LOCKER ROOM THOUGH. THE SECOND ONE WAS A PLAY. IT WAS CALLED DIAGONAL. AND I COULDN’T SAY IT. WHATEVER. I LOOK BACK FROM HALF COURT, YOU KNOW, I’M TRYING TO CALL THE

PLAY, AND MY FOUR TEAMMATES ARE LOOKING AT EACH OTHER, LIKE, WHAT’S THE PLAY? LIKE, WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING NOW? SO WE JUST CHANGED EVERYTHING AND WENT TO A FIST TAP AND THAT WAS IT. THAT WAS THE END OF THAT PLAY.

UNTIL MY ENGLISH GOT A LITTLE BIT BETTER. >> Will: YEAH, THINGS THAT ARE A LITTLE BIT EASY TORE SIGNAL WITH HANDS. I GET IT. SO I THINK FOR A LOT OF FANS PEOPLE ARE REMEMBERING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, YOUR POINT GUARD PARTNERSHIPS.

I FEEL LIKE EVERY SINGLE YEAR WHEN YOU WERE WITH THE RAPTORS THE RAPTORS ALSO BROUGHT OTHER POINT GUARDS TO HELP RUN THE POINT WITH YOU. BUT ALSO TO HELP TRY TO COMPETE WITH YOU. AND I KNOW HE THAT, YOU KNOW, OBVIOUSLY YOU STUCK IT OUT FOR A

LONG TIME. AGAIN YOU’RE SECOND IN RAPTORS ASSISTS. THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF THE LONGEVITY. BUT TALK ABOUT PLAYING WITH T.J. FORD AND STARTING A POINT GUARD. THE TWO OF YOU GUYS TRADING OFF ON THAT JOB. >> YEAH, IT WAS GREAT. I MEAN, FOR ME IT WAS ALWAYS GOOD.

I ALWAYS HAD A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH MY TEAMMATES. AT THE END OF THE DAY IT WAS ABOUT THE TEAM FOR ME. SO HE CAME, HE WAS THE STARTING POINT GUARD MY SECOND YEAR. FOR ME IT WAS GREAT. JUST KEEP LEARNING FROM GUYS WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE LEAGUE, AROUND

THE LEAGUE. AND A GREAT PLAYER WHO, YOU KNOW, WAS ABLE TO SCORE IN A LOT OF WAYS. I WAS THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE, SO I THINK IT WAS A GOOD TANDEM FOR THAT TEAM. AND THAT WAS KIND OF THE THING. HE GOT INJURED SO I’D REPLACE HIM FOR THE STARTING POSITION.

AND AFTER THAT, YOU KNOW, I WENT TO THE RAPTORS IN THE THIRD YEAR. THEY DECIDED TO GET ME AS A STARTING POINT GUARD. BUT YEAH, FOR ME, IT WAS ALL ALWAYS THAT CHALLENGE OF BEING TOGETHER, PLAYING THE BEST I COULD. I THINK USUALLY THE PLAYERS THAT

WERE COMING IN TO PLAY MY POSITION WERE JUST A DIFFERENT STYLE OF PLAYERS. SO IT WAS PERFECT. I THINK HE WAS GREAT FOR THE TEAM, I CAN SCORE MORE, I CAN PASS BETTER. SO THAT WAS FOR ME ALWAYS THE KEY. AND I STILL MAINTAIN A

RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. IT WAS A GREAT TANDEM. WE WENT TO THE PLAYOFFS. IT WAS GREAT. JUST GETTING INJURED SLOWED HIM DOWN A BIT. FOR US HE WAS A REALLY IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE TEAM. >> Will: PERSONALLY I’M STILL MAD AT AL HORFORD.

EVERY TIME I SEE HE HIM I’M, LIKE, BUT YOU HURT TJ FORD. I KNOW IT WASN’T ON PURPOSE, BUT I STILL GET UPSET ABOUT IT. I REMEMBER READING A STORY — AGAIN, THIS IS SO LONG ACHE, BUT YOU ACTUALLY WENT TO THE COACHING STAFF AND SAID T.J.

SHOULD START, AND YOU ACTUALLY VOLUNTEERED TO COME OFF THE BENCH. TELL US ABOUT THAT STORY. >> YEAH, T.J. CAME BACK FROM THE INJURY. THE TEAM WAS PLAYING REALLY GOOD. THEY BROUGHT IN T.J. FROM THE BENCH. BUT, YOU KNOW, IT WAS TWO THINGS.

LIKE, HE WASN’T GOING THROUGH ON THAT, WITH HIS ROLE. YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY WAS KIND OF, LIKE, WAITING FOR HIM TO BE BACK HIMSELF. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BEST WAY. LIKE, LOOK, I KNOW I’M PLAYING GOOD AND THE TEAM IS PLAYING GREAT, BUT WE NEED T.J.

WE NEED MORE PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO GET TO WHAT WE WANTED TO BE. AND WE WERE FIGHTING TO GET THAT ATLANTIC DIVISION TITLE AND EVERYTHING, LIKE, THAT. SO FOR ME HE IT WAS, LIKE, I ALWAYS SAID, FOR ME THE TEAM WAS ALWAYS FIRST.

SO THIS IS NOT ABOUT NUMBERS OR STATS. SO I FELT THAT WAS A GOOD THING FOR OUR TEAM. AND FOR TCHL J. AS WELL. THAT’S HIS ROLE. HE WAS THE STARTING POINT GUARD. I WAS JUST REPLACING HIM. AND WE WERE JUST GETTING BACK TO OUR REGULAR SELVES.

>> Will: YEAH. WELL, I MEAN, I THINK FIRST OFF, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PLAYERS WOULD WANT TO CONTINUE TO START. ESPECIALLY IF THE TEAM’S SUCCESSFUL. BUT I THINK THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT. YOU ALWAYS PUT THE TEAM FIRST. AGAIN, THE TEAM DID TRY A COUPLE OTHER POINT GUARDS.

ESPECIALLY AFTER T.J. GOT HURT. JACK AND BAYLIS. SOME OF THESE OTHER FAMOUS. BUT IT DIDN’T WORK OUT T COACH WOULD WITH ALWAYS COME BACK TO YOU. IT WASN’T UNTIL KYLE LOWRY CAME THROUGH WHERE IT WAS, LIKE, OKAY , FINALLY THE RAPTORS CAN MAYBE PIVOT IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION.

UNFORTUNATELY THAT LED TO YOU GETTING MOVED OFF THE TEAM. BUT I WAS ACTUALLY — WE HAD DWANE CASEY ON THE SHOW HE — ON THE SHOW EARLIER THIS WEEK. HE SAID KYLE EARLY IN HIS CAREER WAS SO, SO COMPETITIVE. HIS WORDS, KYLE WAS TRYING TO

KICK YOUR ASS IN PRACTICE EVERY SINGLE DAY WHEN HE WAS COMING OFF THE BENCH AGAINST YOU. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT COMPETING AGAINST KYLE, EVEN WITHIN THE SAME TEAM? >> IT WAS GREAT. I MEAN, I LOVE KYLE. HE’S BEEN A GREAT FRIEND SINCE THOSE DAYS.

I THINK THE GOD THING I BROUGHT TO THE TAIL IS THEY UNDERSTOOD THAT YOU COULD COMPETE AGAINST ME AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT. BECAUSE IT’S GOOD FOR THE TEAM. THAT DOESN’T MEAN WE CANNOT BE FRIENDS. BEST FRIENDS OUTSIDE OF THOSE LINES. THAT WAS ALWAYS MEDICAL.

THAT WAS THE WAY I AM AS A PERSON. SO IT WAS GREAT. I MEAN, I WAS LEARNING. I WAS GROWING. HE WAS MAKING ME HE A BETTER PLAYER. I WAS TRYING TO MAKE HIM A BETTER PLAYER. HE UNDERSTOOD THAT, YOU KNOW, EVERY TIME I WAS SAYING

SOMETHING IT WAS TO HELP. NOT TO TRY TO GET ANYTHING WRONG ABOUT IT. SO THAT WAS THE TRIAL THAT WAS THERE. YOU KNOW, A LOT OF THINGS HAPPEN, YOU KNOW, AT THAT TIME. THERE WAS AN EXPIRING CONTRACT. I WAS PLAYING AT THAT TIME. REVIEWED RUDY ANYWAY, THEY WERE

ABLE TO GET HIM. SERVICE JUST THE SITUATION OF EVERYTHING. AND I THINK THAT WAS A GOOD THING FOR THE TEAM. IT WAS GOOD FOR EVERYBODY. I THINK KYLE DESERVED TO BE THE STARTING POINT GUARD FOR THAT TEAM. I THINK, YOU KNOW, HE WAS

A DIFFERENT PLAYER WHEN HE ARRIVED FROM WHEN I LEFT. AND I MEAN, LOOK WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT. SO IT WAS GREAT. GREAT TO SEE HE THAT GROWTH OF KYLE IN TORONTO. >> Will: ARE YOU AND KYLE FRIENDS? I FEEL, LIKE, I SAW SOMETHING

WHERE YOU WANTED A REPORT TORE TELL KYLE TO ANSWER YOUR TEXTS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. MAYBE THAT WAS BACK IN 2015. >> YEAH, I THINK IT WAS, LIKE, LAST ALL-STAR OR SOMETHING. OR THE FINALS. THAT WAS LAST YEAR, NO? >> Will: YEAH, WITH MIAMI.

>> I’M, LIKE, LOOK, JUST ASK THIS. AND HE’S SPENT SOME TIME IN SPAIN AS WELL. WE’RE ALWAYS IN CONTACT. I’M IN CONTACT WITH KING AND DEMAR, A LOT OF THE GUYS. LIKE I SAY, IT WAS ALWAYS A GOOD RELATIONSHIP. EVEN FROM THE OUTSIDE. PEOPLE MAYBE WERE THINKING

SOMETHING ELSE OR TRYING TO FIGURE SOMETHING OUT. I WAS ABOUT THE TEAM. I WAS TRYING TO HELP THEM. I’M SO HAPPY WITH THEM AND THEIR CAREERS THAT THEY HAVE AFTER THOSE YEARS WITH ME. SO I LOVE IT. IT WAS ALWAYS GREAT. >> Will: SPEAKING OF DEMAR,

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT A YOUNG DEMAR WHEN HE FIRST CAME IN? HE CAME IN SUPER YOUNG, 19. YOU WERE WITH HIM THE FIRST THREE OR FOUR YEARS. WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THE YOUNG DEMAR DEROZAN? >> I REMEMBER THAT HE WAS ACTUALLY PROBABLY THE OPPOSITE

OF WHAT HE IS RIGHT NOW, YOU KNOW. HE WAS RAW TALENT THAT COULDN’T REALLY SHOOT THE BALL. STUPID ATHLETIC. HE’S STILL ATHLETIC, BUT HE DOESN’T USE IT AS MUCH. YEAH, HE WENT TO THE OTHER WAY. FINESSE. PLAYING GREAT. FOOT WORK. HE CAN NOT MISS A SHOT. EVERY TIME HE SHOOTS.

HE DIDN’T GET INTO WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE 3-POINT LINE OR THE NEW NBA. HE KEPT PLAYING HIS WAY. HE’S SCORING AND STILL HAS A FEW YEARS TO GO. SO SAME THING. HE WOULD WORK. HE LISTENED AND REALLY GOT BET AND ARE WANTED TO BE BETTER.

HE WANTED TO BE THE BEST HE COULD ABOUT THE AN IMPRESSIVE CAREER FOR SURE. >> Will: FOR SURE. YOU CAN DEFINITELY TELL HOUFRP HARD WORK HE PUT INTO THAT. I REMEMBER A YOUNG DEMAR. OBVIOUSLY YOU PLAYED WITH HIM. BUT IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT YOU’RE MENTIONING. VERY RAW.

BUT TO SEE HIM NOW AND HOW SKILLED HE IS, THE FOOT WORK, THE TOUCH THAT HE HAS ON HIS SHOT IS INCREDIBLE. BUT I THINK ALSO SOMETHING THAT TAKES A LOT OF HARD WORK IS LEEING THE LEAGUE IN FREE THROWS.

AND 2009 YOU WERE AT 98.1% ON THE SEASON. 151 FOR 154. I’M SURE YOU GOT ASKED ABOUT THIS PROBABLY MORE THAN ANYBODY GETS ASKED ABOUT FREE THROW SHOOTING. BUT IN THAT YEAR, AND I KNOW YOUR LONGEST STREAK I THINK WAS 87 CONSECUTIVE, WHICH I THINK IS

THE SECOND LONGEST STREAK EVER IN NBA HISTORY. YOU MADE 87 FOR 87 AT ONE POINT. WAS THAT IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND? WERE YOU EVER SENT TO THE FREE-THROW LINE FOR A TECHNICAL OR YOU GOT FOULED OR WHATEVER, IS THAT IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND?

LIKE, I CAN’T MISS THIS. NOT JUST BECAUSE I NEED THE POINT BUT, LIKE, I HAVE AN NBA RECORD GOING. >> IT WAS THERE. BUT IT WAS BECAUSE IT WAS GETTING BIG AND ARE BIGGER AS A STORY. PLAYERS START TALKING ABOUT ITEM PLAYERS WERE JOKING AROUND, HEY,

I GOT $100 THAT YOU’RE GONNA MISS. I’VE GOT $100 THAT YOU WILL GET TO 100. BEFORE YOU MISS. SO PEOPLE START TALKING ABOUT IT. SOME TEAMS TOO, I REMEMBER GOING INTO SACRAMENTO, I GO TO THE LINE AND ACTUALLY THE GUYS FROM THE ARENA ARE TELLING EVERYBODY,

THIS GUY HAS 54 OR 55 IN A ROW. LET’S MAKE HIM MISS. PEOPLE WENT CRAZY ABOUT WHEN WHEN I WAS GOING TO THE LINE IN SOME PLACES. SO THAT WAS THE WHOLE THING ABOUT IT. SO I REMEMBER MY THREE MISSES. IT WAS AN IMPRESSIVE YEAR.

I NEVER EVEN GOT CLOSE TO THAT AGAIN. BECAUSE THINKING NOW ABOUT IT, IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. I WASN’T A HUGE FREE THROW SHOOTER, LIKE, NUMBERS WILES. IT WAS A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT. SOME NIGHTS I’D ONLY GET 1 AND 3 ONE DAY OR 4 OR 0 FOR 2 GAMES.

IT WAS DIFFICULT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. BUT, YOU KNOW, IT WAS A THING THAT WAS THERE. I WAS TRYING TO FOCUS ON THE WHOLE WOULD THING. AND I JUST REMEMBER THE LAST GAME. I REMEMBER THE COACHES TELLING ME, LIKE, DON’T GO TO THE LINE TONIGHT.

JUST SHOOT FROM THE OUTSIDE. IT WAS A GAME THAT DIDN’T MEAN ANYTHING TO US. BUT THE COPES WERE, LIKE, YOU HAVE AN AMAZING NIGHT. AND I ACTUALLY WAS 4 FOR 4 OR SOMETHING. BUT THEY WERE, LIKE, DON’T GET IT. IT’S THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON.

DON’T MESS IT UP NOW. AFTER ALL THESE GAMES MAKING FREE THROWS. SO I REMEMBER SOME OF THOSE STORIES. >> Will: FOR SURE. I THINK IT’S STILL THE NBA RECORD FOR HIGHEST PERCENTAGE FOR FREE THROWS IN A SEASON. 98.1 IS JUST CRAZY TO LOOK AT

WHEN YOUING TO YOUR BASKETBALL REFERENCE PAGE. I WANTED TO ASK ABOUT YOUR TIME WITH THE SPANISH NATIONAL TEAM AS WELL. I KNOW CANADA IS DOING A LOT BETTERER RECENTLY. CANADA MADE THE OLYMPICS FINALLY, THE MEN’S SIDE, BUT BEATING SPAIN IN THE WORLD CUP LAST SUMMER.

SO I’M SORRY ABOUT THAT. BUT I KNOW HE THAT THE COACHES, BOTH THE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TEAM, HAVE SPOKEN SO MUCH ABOUT HOW THEY WANT TO EMULATE THE SYSTEM THAT YOU GUYS WERE ABLE TO BRING IN SPAIN IN TERMS OF THE CONNECTIVITY FROM THE YOUTH

LEVEL TO THE NATIONAL TEAM AND JUST MAINTAIN THAT IDENTITY THROUGHOUT. AND BEING ABLE TO SORT OF PUT PLAYERS INTO THESE SYSTEMS SO THAT THEY CAN REALLY THRIVE AND BE COMFORTABLE IN THEIR ROLE. YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU HEAR THAT, WHEN YOU HEAR THAT KIND OF

RESPECT GIVEN TO THE NATIONAL PROGRAM THAT YOU GUYS HAD WITH SPAIN, HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU GUYS FEEL? AND HOW SPECIAL WAS IT TO PLAY UNDER JUST SOME REALLY GLORIOUS GENERATIONS WITH SPANISH BASKETBALL? >> I MEAN, IT’S GREAT. IT KIND OF, LIKE, THE PRIDE OR

BEING PROUD OF WHAT WE DID. MORE THAN ANYTHING. MORE THAN WINNING OR GETTING MEDALS OR GOING TO THE OLYMPICS. I THINK FOR A LONG TIME WE WERE ABLE TO BE COMPETITIVE. WE PLAYED FOR EVERY MEDAL, EVERY TROPHY. THAT WAS IMPORTANT. WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT THE SPANISH

AND THE COACHES AS WELL, NOW IN CANADA, IT’S ABOUT GOING TO PLAY FOR SPAIN. IT WASN’T, LIKE, I’M MISSING MY SUMMER. THIS IS VACATION FOR ME. IT WAS ACTUALLY SOMETHING THAT WE LOVE AND WE EMBRACE AS SOMETHING GREAT. INSTEAD OF GOING TO WORK OUT IN

THE SUMMER, IT DOESN’T MATTER. MIAMI, L.A. OR WHATEVER. WE WERE WORKING OUT WITH THE BEST. I WAS WORKING OUT EVERY SUMMER WITH GASOL AND RUDY FERNANDEZ. ALL THOSE GUYS. IT’S, LIKE, WHY SHED OF BEING BY MYSELF I CAN’T BE HERE HAVING FUN. SO WE WERE LIKE A FAMILY.

WE LOVE EACH OTHER. OUR FAMILIES CAME, AND INSTEAD OF GOING WITH OUR FAMILIES, OUR FAMILY WAS THE ONE JOINING THE GROUP. SO THAT’S KIND OF, LIKE, CHEMISTRY THAT WE HAVE. IT GOT US TO WIN A LOT OF CHAMPIONSHIPS THAT OTHER TEAMS DIDN’T HAVE THAT CHEMISTRY, THAT

GOOD FEELING WITH EACH OTHER. AND WE NEVER HAD THE FEELING OF WELL, THIS IS ANOTHER SUMMER THAT WE’RE GOING TO LOSE. WE’RE GOING TO BE ON THE BEACH OR WHATEVER. WE ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, LOVED TO HANG OUT WITH EACH OTHER AND THAT WAS KEY FOR SURE.

>> Will: I THINK, YOU KNOW, THAT’S THE CHEMISTRY THAT YOU GUYS SAW, YOU KNOW, ON THE COURT AS WELL. I THINK THAT DIRECTLY TRANSLATED. YOU GUYS HAD SUCH A GREAT STYLE. I THINK IT WAS SUCH A DISTINCT ADVANTAGE. YOU KNOW, YOU LOOK AT SOME OF

THE MOST HISTORIC GAMES. YOU THINK BACK TO 2008 IN BEIJING, RIGHT? YOU GUYS PLAYED THE GOLD MEDAL MATCH AGAINST TEAM USA. FIRST OFF, WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT PLAYING IN THAT MATCH? IT GOT REALLY CLOSE. DO YOU EVER THINK BACK ON IT? IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE PAINFUL,

BUT I THINK YOU GUYS HAD A REAL CHANCE TO EVEN TAKE GOLD. >> NOT AT ALL. NOT PAINFUL. IT WAS AN AMAZING TEAM IN 2008. IT WAS ACTUALLY A LITTLE MORE PAINFUL IF 2012. WE ACTUALLY THOUGHT WE COULD BEAT THEM AFTER WE LOST THE FIRST TIME.

SO A MEDAL FOUR YEARS LATER. THAT WAS THE MOST PAINFUL ACTUALLY. WE WERE SO HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO GET THERE. IT WAS OUR FIRST TIME GOING INTO THAT. IT WAS OUR FIRST OLYMPIC MEDAL. IT’S ALWAYS SOMETHING YOU DREAM OF AS A KID, TO HAVE AN OLYMPIC MEDAL.

IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT COLOUR. WE WERE UPSET BECAUSE WE LOST, BUT WE WERE SO HAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE TEAM AND BEING ABLE TO GET THAT. NOW, 2012 WAS A DIFFERENT STORY. ANOTHER CLOSE GAME. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, THEY WERE A GREAT TEAM.

LEBRON OR WADE OR RYAN OR CARMELO ANTHONY. YOU KNOW, ALL OF THEM HAVING A BAD DAY WAS TOUGH. WE ALMOST GOT IT. SO THAT WAS THE POSITIVE THING ABOUT IT. FOR US MAYBE IT WAS THE ONE THING THAT WE MISSED, HAVING AN OLYMPIC MEDAL.

WE END UP WITH THREE MEDALSEM IT’S AMAZING, BUT WE LOST TO THE U.S. THAT’S THE ONLY LITTLE THING. WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE WORLD CUP. THAT WAS NO PROBLEM. WE GOT IT. BUT THOSE OLYMPICS, YOU KNOW, THEY ALWAYS GOT US. ALWAYS TOUGH TO BEAT THE U.S.

BUT THEY WERE SCARED. THEY COULD SAY THEY WERE A DREAM TEAM OR WHATEVER, BUT IT WAS CLOSER WHEN THEY WERE THERE. >> Will: OH, FOR SURE. WHEN I THINK BACK AND I REMEMBER WATCHING IT SO CLOSELY, BECAUSE I’M CHILD NIECE AND IT WAS THE

OLYMPICS IN BEIJINGEM IT WAS SUCH A BIG, BIG DEAL ABSOLUTELY. YOU KNOW, I THINK BACK TO THAT USA TEAM. IT LOCKED UNBEATABLE. WHEN THEY PLAYED OTHER TEAMS THEY WERE BEATING THEM BY, LIKE, 30. BUT YEAH, IT WAS CLOSE IN THE 4th QUARTER AND YOU GUYS HAD A

LOT OF GREAT MOMENTS AGAINST THEMMEM, YOU KNOW, IT WAS REALLY KOBEM I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT FOR ME WATCHING THE GAMES, IT WAS, LIKE, KOBE REALLY TOOK OVER FOR THAT GROUP. AND A TEAM FULL OF STARS IT WAS ACTUALLY HIM THAT TOOK OVER.

WAS THAT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS WELL? >> YEAH, AS WELL. BUT I COULD SEE LOOKING AT THE HE BENCH, AT THE OTHER BENCH, THEIR FACES, THAT I REACTIONS, I KNEW THEM. I KNEW THEM FROM NBA. I KNEW HOW THEY WERE PLAYING AND REACTING WITH OTHER TEAMS.

SO WE FELT THAT THEY WERE, LIKE, OKAY, GUYS, THIS IS REAL. THIS IS GETTING CLOSE. THESE GUYS ARE PROBABLY, YOU KNOW, BETTER THAN WE WERE EXPECTING. THEY’RE ACTUALLY PLAYING GOOD AS WELL. SO THAT WAS THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE. BUT IT WAS GREAT. I MEAN, GREAT CHALLENGES. WE TRIED EVERYTHING.

THEY CAME BACK WITH THOSE BIG 3’S AND ALL THE STUFF. SO IT WAS GOOD. AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE FOR US HAVING THREE OLYMPIC MEDALS IS SOMETHING, YOU KNOW, YOU CAN’T HAVE, LIKE, A DREAM EVEN ABOUT IT. SO EVEN IF IT WASN’T THE MOST PRECIOUS ONE.

BUT I THINK IT WAS GOOD ENOUGH. >> Will: I WANTED TO ASK ABOUT TWO OF YOUR TEAMMATES ON THOSE TEAMS. MARC GASOL OBVIOUSLY. YOU WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THE RAPTORS. VERY BELOVED PLAYER HERE IN TORONTO. TORONTO’S HAD A LOT OF GOOD SPANISH PLAYERS AS WELL.

BUT WITH MARC, GOING INTO RETIREMENT, YOU KNOW, WHAT IS HE GOING TO DO NEXT? I SAW THE BIG INSTAGRAM POST HE MADE. HAS THAT BEEN ANNOUNCED WHAT MARC IS GOING TO DO NEXT? DO YOU STILL KEEP IN TOUCH WITH MARC? >> YES, WE TALK A LOT. ALL OF US.

MARC ACTUALLY OWN S A TEAM. HE’S THE PRESIDENT THERE. HE HAD A LOT OF LITTLE THINGS AND OTHER BUSINESSES, BUT THAT’S HIS MAIN JOB, BEING THE PRESIDENT. HE WAS THE PRESIDENT, OWNER AND PLAYER AT SOME POINT. [Laughter] >> HE PLAYED, BUT HE HAD THE

SIDE — HE DECIDED TO BE IN THE FRONT OFFICE AND NOT PLAY ON THE COURT ANYMORE. THAT’S THE RETIREMENT THING. WE ALL KNEW THAT WAS HIS LAST PLAYING AND IT WAS GOING TO BE DIFFICULT TO SEE HIM BACK ON THE COURT. HE’S DOING GREAT. AMAZING CAREER AS WELL.

WE TALK A LOT. WE ALL MANY THAT GENERATION ARE REALLY GOOD FRIENDS. WE’RE SO CLOSE THAT IT, LIKE, YOU KNOW, IT JUST TOUGH NOT TO ENJOY NOW WHAT EVERYBODY’S DOING AFTER BASKETBALL. >> Will: YEAH. WELL, I WAS GOING TO ASK ABOUT RICKY RUBIO AS WELL. HE’S OPENED

UP ABOUT HIS STRUGGLES RECENTLY AS WELL. I WANT TO KNOW HOW RICKY IS DOING IF YOU’VE CHECKED UP ON HIM. I UNDERSTAND HE’S GONE BACK TO EUROPE. >> YES. I’VE BEEN IN TOUCH A LOT. AS YOU KNOW, I’M PART OF THE FRONT OFFICE IN CLEVELAND.

SO HE WAS PART OF OUR TEAM AS WELL. AND I WAS REALLY CLOSE WITH THAT WHOLE THING. AND HE’S REALLY HAPPY. HE’S BACK ON THE COURT. HE’S PLAYING WITH BARCELONA. HE PLAYED A COUPLE OF GAMES WITH THE NATIONAL TEAM IN THE FIBA WINDOW. HE’S BACK AND SMILING AGAIN.

THAT’S WHAT WE WANTED TO SEE. ME AS A FRIEND, YOU KNOW, THAT WAS THE MAIN PART. SO SEEING HIM PLAYING LAST NIGHT, HE WAS GREAT AS WELL. I WAS WATCHING A LITTLE BIT OF THE GAME. SO NICE. SO IT HAPPENS TO ALL OF US.

YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO BE ALWAYS TAKING CARE OF NOT JUST YOUR BODY BUT YOUR MINDS AS WELL. I THINK THAT’S SPECIAL. HE CAME OUT IN ONE MOMENT THAT MAYBE NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO DO. RIGHT BEFORE GOING TO A MAIN

EVENT WITH SPAIN AND BE THE MAIN GUY. HE DECIDED TO SAY, LOOK, I NEED SOME TIME. I NEED TO GO HOME. AND I THINK HE FORESURE WILL HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT SECTORS OF LIFE. BECAUSE I THINK THIS IS NOT JUST PROFESSIONAL SPORT.

IT’S ANY PEOPLE IN ANY KIND OF WORK. I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF THE MIND AS WELL. >> Will: YEAH. IT WAS VERY BRAVE FOR RICKY TO PUT HIMSELF OUT THERE LIKE THAT AND EXPLAIN HIMSELF. AND I KNOW IT’S NOT EASY.

I THINK IN SPORTS WE FOCUS SO MUCH ON DELIVERING RESULTS AND HOW ARE YOU GOING TO BE ON THE COURT AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO WIN THE NEXT GAME. BUT I THINK WHEN YOU TAKE A STEP BACK AND YOU SEE HE MOMENTS LIKE

THAT, THAT WAS A REAL COURAGEOUS THING RICKY DID. I’M CURIOUS, ESPECIALLY FROM YOUR CITED WITH THE CALVES, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WAYS CLEVELAND AND YOU IN THE FRONT OFFICE AND ORGANIZATION DID IN THIS TIME TO SUPPORT RICKY? >> EVERYTHING THAT HE ASKED FOR. JUST TRYING TO HAVE RESOURCES

THAT HE NEEDED. JUST PUTTING ON , HEY, WHATEVER YOU NEED, HERE THEY ARE. HERE ARE ALL THESE RESOURCES FOR YOU. IF THERE’S SPACE, WHATEVER YOU NEED. YOU KNOW, IT WAS JUST RICKY WAS NEXT, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GET BACK TO YOURSELF. HOW WE CAN HELP.

AND I THINK THAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU CAN DO IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT. THERE IS NOT ANYTHING ELSE. THE CONTRACT IS SECONDARY. WHATEVER IT IS, IT’S MORE ABOUT THE PERSON, THE RELATIONSHIP, AND JUST TRYING TO DO THE RIGHT THING FOR HIM TO BE BACK TO

WHATEVER HE NEEDED TO BE. YOU KNOW, YOU NEVER KNOW IF HE WAS GOING TO BE A MONTH, A YEAR OR THREE YEARS OR TWO DAYS. IT DOESN’T MATTER. IT WAS ABOUT HIM AND THAT’S WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO DO FROM THE BEGINNING. OKAY WE’RE HERE FOR YOU AND LET

US KNOW WHAT YOU NEED. WE HAVE ALL THESE RESOURCES FOR YOU. LET US KNOW IF YOU NEED ANY OF THEM OR EXTRA ONES AS WELL. >> Will: FOR SUREM I’M HAPPY TO SEE YOU STILL PLAYING TOO. GOING BACK TO 2008, THE IMAGE OF RICKY WITH THE LONG HAIR AND,

LIKE, 18 YEARS OLD, HE WAS JUST A BOY COMPETING AGAINST, LIKE, TEAM USA AND RUNNING THE GROUP AND GOING UP AGAINST JASON KIDD, WHO I THINK AT THAT POINT MIGHT HAVE BEEN 30 ALREADY. IMPRESSIVE PLAYER FOR SURE. FINALLY, JUST A COUPLE OF OTHER QUESTIONS.

I READ A STORY RECENTLY THAT THE CAVALIERS KEPT CALLING YOU A BILLIONAIRE WHEN YOU PLAYED ON THE CAVS. >> YES. >> Will: BECAUSE THERE’S A MEXICAN BILLIONAIRE ALSO NAMED JOSE CALDERON. YOU’RE OBVIOUSLY NOT RELATED AT ALL. HE’S MEXICAN, YOU’RE SPANISH.

BUT IT BECAME A RUNNING JOKE. TELL US ABOUT THIS. >> YEAH, IT WAS A MISTAKE BY I THINK WIKIPEDIA OR SOMETHNG. EVERYTHING STARTED WITH JOHNNY FRY. I GUESS HE LOOKED UP MY NAME OR SOMETHING. AND HE SAW THAT I WAS WORTH, YOU KNOW, 2.WHATEVER BILLION.

SO THEN HE STARTED TO TALK TO EVERYONE. WE WERE GOING FOR DINNER AND HE’D BE, LIKE, HEY, THE BILLIONAIRE HAS TO PAY. [Laughter] SO THE WHOLE THING BROKE UP AND EVERYBODY WAS JOKING WITH EACH OTHER. AND EVEN ESPN HAD HO A NOTE

ABOUT IT JUST TO EXPLAIN TO EVERYBODY. BUT THEY WERE, LIKE, ARE YOU REALLY A BILLIONAIRE? WHY ARE YOU PLAYING BASKETBALL? I’M, LIKE, LOOK, IT’S NOT ME. I PLAY BASKETBALL BECAUSE IT’S FUN. PEOPLE WERE THINKING I WAS PLAYING JUST BECAUSE. WAS IT MONEY OR WHATEVER.

BUT YEAH, IT WAS GOING ON FOR A WHAT TIME UNTIL, YOU KNOW, I HAD TO ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS TO ONE OF THE REPORTERS AND SAY, LOOK, THIS IS HOW IT HAPPENED. JOHNNY FRY WAS THE ONE TO START IT. IT’S TRUE. IF YOULY AT IT, IT SAYS I WAS

WORTH THAT MONEY. BUT I WAS, LIKE, LOOK, THIS IS NOT ME. SAME NAME, BUT NOTHING TO DO WITH MY FAMILY. EVEN WITH THAT, THEY WERE ALWAYS, LIKE, YEAH, YEAH RIGHT, WHATEVER. >> Will: OF COURSE. >> SO IT WAS FUN. IT WAS A GREAT STORY TO GO WITH

THROUGH THE SEASON. >> Will: LISTEN, IF YOU WERE A BILLIONAIRE, YOU MAY DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. YOU MAY OWN A HAM FARM. AND I THINK THAT THIS IS ALWAYS A STORY I ALWAYS WANTED TO ASK YOU ABOUT. DO YOU STILL OWN YOUR HAM FARM?

>> I EXPLAINED THIS ONE TOO. I HAD A HAM BUSINESS, BUT IT WASN’T, LIKE, I OWN ED ALL THE STUFF. LIKE, THE THING WAS, I WAS WITH PEOPLE, LIKE, A BUSINESS. AND WE WERE ACTUALLY BRINGING SOME OF THE HAM, A DIFFERENT KIND OF HAM.

IT WAS GOING TO TORONTO. I BROUGHT OL’ — OLIVE OIL AS WELL AND OTHER THINGS. >> Will: OH, YOU WERE IMPORTING FOOD. >> YEAH, BUT I DIDN’T HAVE THE REAL PIGS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT WITH ME. IT WAS JUST A LOT OF FARMERS

WHERE, YOU KNOW, WE WORK WITH THEM. BUT WE WERE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THINGS. BUT PEOPLE LOVED THAT. I STICK WITH THAT. I REMEMBER EVEN THE RAPTORS PUTTING IT IN ONE OF THE MEDIA BOOKS. I’M, LIKE, LET’S GO, GUYS. I’M JUST — I DON’T HAVE A FARM.

BUT IT WAS FUN, YEAH. >> Answer: SO YOU’RE NOT A BILLIONAIRE AND YOU DO NOT FEED PIGS FOR THE PURPLES OF CURING HAM LATER ON. >> EXACTLY. EXACTLY. YEAH. FAKE NEWS. FAKE NEWS. >> Will: THAT’S FAKE NEWS. I THINK THIS ONE IS REAL.

YOU WERE IN ATTENDANCE FOR KAWHI’S SHOT IN GAME 7. CAN YOU TELL US FIRST OFF, WERE YOU IN ATTENDANCE AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO TORONTO FOR IT? WHERE WERE YOU SITTING WHEN KAWHI HIT THAT SHOT? >> I WAS ON THE FRONT ROW. ACTUALLY UNDER THAT BASKET.

AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED. IT WAS PROBABLY A TIME OUT RIGHT BEFORE THAT PLAY. SO ME HE AND MY SON, BECAUSE WE NEEDED TO GET BACK — I THINK WE WERE IN DETROIT AT THAT TIME. SO WE HAD A CAR WAITING OUTSIDE. WE WERE, LIKE, OKAY, LET’S GO THROUGH THE TUNNEL.

SO AT THAT TIME I WAS ACTUALLY IN THE TUNNEL WHERE THE PLAYERS GO, TRYING TO GET TO MY CAR. YOU KNOW, LIKE, WATCHING FROM THERE. >> Will: YOU DIDN’T SEE IT? >> NO, NO, WE SEE IT, BUT IT WAS, LIKE, AS SOON AS IT GOES

BOUNCE, BOUNCE, BOUNCE, I WAS, LIKE, WHOA! I GO TO MY SON MANUEL, RUN! SO WE WENT DOWN TO THE PARKING LOT AND WE WERE JUST FOLLOWING THE PARTY AND EVERYTHING WITH THE LITTLE SCREENS THAT WERE AT THE ARENA. SO YEAH, IT WAS AMAZING.

IT WAS SO MUCH FUN, YEAH. >> Will: THAT IS SO MUCH FUN. ALL RIGHT, LAST QUESTION. SO KOBE OBVIOUSLY GOT THE STATUE UNVAMED OUTSIDE OF WHAT USED TO BE STAPLES, WHAT IS NOW CRYPTO ARENA. ON THE STATUE OF KOBE AFTER ’81, HE PUT THE ONE FINGER UP.

THAT’S THE FIGURE THEY’VE USED. THERE’S THE BOX SCORE THAT’S BEEN INSCRIBED ON TO THE STATUE UNDERNEATH. AND IT HAS OBVIOUSLY THE PLAYERS WHO PLAYED IN THAT GAME. IT WAS AGAINST TORONTO OF COURSE AND YOU WERE ONE OF THE PLAYERS. THEY ACTUALLY MILLS SPELLED YOUR NAME.

THEY SPELLED IT JOSE CALDERSON. THEY HAVE TO CORRECT IT, BUT DO YOU REMEMBER BEING IN THAT GAME FIRST AND FOREMOST? >> YES. FOR ME HE I ALWAYS TOOK IT THE RIGHT WAY. I WAS, LIKE, WITNESS TO HISTORY. SO ALWAYS FROM THE BEGINNING, YES.

I WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THINGS. YOU KNOW, IT’S ALWAYS BETTER IF YOU’RE ON THE OTHER SIDE. BUT I LOVE IT. I ALWAYS JOKE AROUND. LOOK, I GOT HIM A FEW TIMES. HE WAS ONE OUT OF THREE. SO 33% WAS MY DEFENCE. >> Will: OH! OKAY.

>> SO IT WAS ALWAYS GREAT. I ALWAYS TOOK IT IN A REALLY NICE, FUN WAY. THAT WAS AMAZING. I KNEW THAT WAS GOING TO BE HISTORY FOR SURE. SO IT WAS GREAT. AND I ALWAYS REMEMBER WITH KOBE TOO, WHEN WE PLAYED EACH OTHER BECAUSE THAT WAS MY ROOKIE

SEASON. SO FOR ME, IT WAS ALWAYS, LIKE, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED. IT WAS GREAT. AND WITH THE OTHER PART THAT YOU SAY, I WAS THERE, LIKE, A MONTH OR MONTH AND A HALF AGO. I WENT TO TAKE SOME PICTURES AND I WAS THERE JUST WALKING AROUND.

BUT I DIDN’T WANT TO BE THE ONE TO BRING IT UP. [Laughter] BUT I SAW IT. I GOT THE PICTURE. I’M, LIKE, WOW. WHAT HAPPENED IS I DIDN’T REALIZE THE OTHER COUPLE OF MISTAKES. IT WASN’T JUST ME. LITTLE THINGS THERE. BUT IT’S OKAY. I MEAN, IT’S SOMETHING THAT IS

ANOTHER GREAT STORY TO TELL. FOR SURE, SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AS IT IS, FOR SURE THEY WILL TRY TO FIX IT. IT’S SOMETHING THAT WILL BE THERE FOREVER TO REMEMBER SOMEONE LIKE KOBE. SO IT WILL BE PERFECT. LIKE HE WAS. BUT EVEN LIKE THAT, EVEN IF THEY KEEP IT CALDERSON, IT’S OKAY.

EVEN WITH THAT, EVEN WITH THAT, I WILL TAKE IT ANY DAY. ALWAYS GOOD. >> Will: YEAH. WELL, AGAIN, I’VE BEEN A LONG-TIME RAPTORS FANNEM I REMEMBER THE RAPTORS WERE UP, YOU KNOW, FOR A LARGE PART. THAT’S WHY KOBE HAD TO SCORE SO OFTEN.

BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THEY WERE NOT PLAYING WELLEM HE WAS THE ONLY GUY THAT COULD SCORE. BUT MY QUESTION ALWAYS IS WHY — DID YOU GUYS NOT TRY DOUBLE TEAMING, TRIPLE TEAMING? >> WE TRIED EVERYTHING. >> Will: YOU TRIED EVERYTHING. >> WE TRIED EVERYTHING.

WHEN THEY START GETTING BACK INTO THE GAME AND HE WAS KEEPING SCORING. WE WERE OKAY WITH IT IN THE BEGINNING. WE’RE, LIKE, YOU’RE WINNIK. KOBE’S THE ONLY ONE SCORING. EVERYBODY ELSE IS NOT HAVING THEIR NIGHT. SO WE’LL KEEP DOING IT THIS WAY TMENT PROBLEM WAS HE WAS SCORING

TOO MUCH. THE GAMET GO TIGHT. THEY GO IN FRONT. WE JUST TRIED TO DO EVERYTHING AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. HE FEELS PULLING UP FROM HALF COURT. SO IT WAS CRAZY. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP AT THAT POINT. >> Will: OKAY. >> IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER.

THE OTHER TEAM, WHATEVER, THERE’S IMAGES ALWAYS OF SOME OF US PLAYING DEFENCE ON HIM. HE WAS PERFECT DEFENCE. HE’D SCORE OVER YOU. OR, YOU KNOW, FOULS, EVERYTHING. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. >> Will: BUT THE GAME PLAN WAS TO LET KOBE SCORE. AT LEAST TO
