Anatomy of a loss, why the Warriors lost to the Knicks in the 4th quarter

Im going to cover from 9:09 in the 4th and going to around the 3:30 mark

1. [9:09](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=489&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Brunson%2026%27%203PT%20Step%20Back%20Jump%20Shot), Warriors force Brunson into a contested three, which he misses, good defense, but [Draymond loses the ball OOB on the throw ahead from CP3](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=489&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Brunson%2026%27%203PT%20Step%20Back%20Jump%20Shot) because hes worried about Brunson tracking back and picking his pocket

2. [8:48](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=492&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Bogdanovic%2013%27%20Fadeaway%20Jumper%20(4%20PTS) TJD gets switched onto Bogdan off the PnR and ISOed, good defense from TJD, not much he can do there with Bogdan chickenwinging him to build space, and he hits the jumpers

3. [8:32](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=492&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Bogdanovic%2013%27%20Fadeaway%20Jumper%20(4%20PTS) and go to the CP3-TJD PnR, Hartenstein gaps so CP3 takes the midrange and misses, good offense just missed the shot

4. [8:23](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=496&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Hart%203PT%20Jump%20Shot), Knicks run it back, Brunson drives on Draymond, Klay helps off Hart Brunson kicks the ball to Hart in the corner, Klay dares him to shoot (we did that for most of the game) and he bricks, good defense playing to the scouting report

5. [8:19](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=498&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Thompson%2025%27%203PT%20Jump%20Shot) Klay gets an open three off the TJD screen on the Warriors next offensive possession but misses the three, good execution just missed the shot

6. [7:58](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=500&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Hart%204%27%20Cutting%20Layup%20Shot%20(8%20PTS%20(Hartenstein%204%20AST), Hartenstein sets a comically illegal wide pin down (dont think ever got set lmaoooo), which takes out Klay, TJD gets sucked up and Brunson hits Hartenstein on the roll, CP3 rotates to cut off Hartenstein, Draymond is late cutting off the passing lane to Hart because hes gapping two players, Hart hits the contested layup, messy possession, too many Warriors in the paint ends up getting in each other way but we cant have breakdowns that easily on the perimeter as a perimeter focused defense, TJD also got baited but hes a rook, Kerr called a predictable TO here

7. [7:42](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=509&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Kuminga%206%27%20Fadeaway%20Jumper), Curry drives away from the CP3 screen, Hart helps off Kuminga, Steph give the ball to Kumings who ISOs Hart and misses the midrange, [refs miss the obvious handcheck on Hart](https://imgur.com/a/9vaPbop), this is fine offense, but it highlights a weakness of having Kuminga out there, teams are free to help off him if hes in the corner cutting off Steph driving lanes

8. [7:18](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=511&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Bogdanovic%203%27%20Driving%20Finger%20Roll%20Layup) Draymond plays great defense and force shim into a tougher running layup which he misses, but Wiggins isnt able to seal off Hartenstein who gets the OREB, [but since the shot never hit the rim](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=513&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Knicks%20Turnover%3A%20Shot%20Clock%20(T#10) Warriors force a 24 second violation because the Knicks arent aware, great defense from Draymond here, solid effort from Wiggins on the box out

9. [7:05](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=516&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Curry%2029%27%203PT%20Jump%20Shot), Steph gets fouled by McBride shooting a three but the refs dont call anything, not much else to say here, pretty easy call to make

10. [6:57](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=516&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Curry%2029%27%203PT%20Jump%20Shot) CP3 plays good ISO defense forcing Brunson into a contested jumper which he missed, arent able to seal off Hartenstein who tips the ball out to Hart, [Brunson gets a very soft foul call on the ensuing drive](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=520&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Paul%20S.FOUL%20(P2.T1)%20(Z.Zarba), pretty bad rebounding effort from Kuminga here with Dray and GPII engaged in keeping Hartenstein occupied he needs to be more engaged since he has a free path to the rebound, you cant be that bouncy and stay stapled to the ground here

11. [6:40](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=530&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Kuminga%207%27%20Driving%20Layup) Warriors run Kumigna-Steph PnR and Kuminga gets stuffed by Hartenstein. 3 point, 1) Kuminga probably got fouled by Hartenstein, looked like he hit elbow then ball, 2) an area of growth for Kuminga is IDing when teams overhelp on him, TJD is wide open for a dunk but Kuminga never even considers the pass, 3) the foul after on Kumings is nonsense and was only called because he turned the ball over trying to avoid contact

12. [6:17](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=535&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Brunson%20Lost%20Ball%20Turnover%20(P1.T11) Brunson ISOs Steph, Steph plays good defense, Brunson loses the ball, somehow doesnt get called for a foul for diving into TJDs knee, great defense by Steph here

13. [6:08](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=537&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Kuminga%20Out%20of%20Bounds%20Lost%20Ball%20Turnover%20(P2.T11) what a mess of a possession, why does Kuminga throw the ball to GPII in the corner who has Hartenstein switched onto him? why does Kuminga drive left into the double on the pass back instead into the middle where Hart is the help defender? Why does neither player realize TJD has the inside seal and Hart on him? fugly shit

14. [5:40](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=538&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Hart%2024%27%203PT%20Jump%20Shot) Warriors play 24 seconds of good defense and force Hart into a contested three which he misses, TJD isnt able to secure the rebound because Hartenstein gives hima. subtle push in the back, TJD saves the day on the OREB blocking Harts dunk

15. [5:30](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=543&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Payton%20II%20Bad%20Pass%20Turnover%20(P2.T12), simple miscommunication, GPII thought Steph was going to keep drifting when he stopped, frustrating but these are the TOs you live with

16. [5:19](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=545&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Curry%20S.FOUL%20(P1.T3%20(B.Nansel) Steph called for a foul because Brunson tripped over his own feet (literall toe picks himself) trying to hook his elbow behind Currys back, lol refs

17. [5:13](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=552&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Jackson-Davis%204%27%20Cutting%20Dunk%20Shot%20(17%20PTS%20(Thompson%208%20AST), great offense, douoble pin down into Klay hitting TJD with a tight window pass on the roll, Knicks waste 6 seconds on the inbound

18. [4:46](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=554&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Brunson%2011%27%20Pullup%20Jump%20Shot%20(34%20PTS), Steph plays good defense on Brunson but gets chickenwinged/shoved out of the play, so Brunson gets the wide open jumper which he makes

19. [4:37](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=554&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Brunson%2011%27%20Pullup%20Jump%20Shot%20(34%20PTS), Steph missed a good look off the ISO, good offense just missed

20. [4:21](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=557&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Brunson%20Bad%20Pass%20Turnover%20(P2.T12) Warriors double Brunson and he throws it away to Wiggins, good defense but IDK WTF Brunson was thinking here

21. [4:08](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=559&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=McBride%20P.FOUL%20(P2.T1%20(Z.Zarba), Knicks first foul, somehow its on McBride and not DDV for the obvious reach in

22. [4:03](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=565&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Hartenstein%20P.FOUL%20(P2.T2%20(A.Nagy), another Knicks foul, somehow missed the obvious reach by McBride on Steph

23. [3:57](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=569&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=Jackson-Davis%20Layup%20(19%20PTS) great inbound play, running Klay on the clear out followed by Steph on the double stack which TJD slipping to the rim but the defense in a terrible positoin, refs miss Hartensteins blatant reach on TJD

24. [3:35](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=571&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=McBride%2028%27%203PT%20Pullup%20Jump%20Shot%20(26%20PTS%20(Brunson%205%20AST), McBride hits the contested end of shot clock pull up three, nothing you can do there, good defense better offense

25. [3:22](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=573&GameID=0022300988&Season=2023-24&flag=1&title=MISS%20Curry%2028%27%203PT%20Pullup%20Jump%20Shot) Steph takes and missed the deep pullup three over the double, bad offense, desperate shot, i get the logic of shooting here since you have numbers for the OREB but id rather Steph not take a desperation heave here and instead read Hartenstein and hit TJD on the roll

Im going to stop here because from this point on the offense entered desperation mode and the Knicks were more focused with killing time on offense

TLDR: We didnt play that bad in the 4th, refs are still massive hoes, fuck Zarba

They lost because 3 out of 5 starters combined for 9 points. You can’t have 3/5 starters not contributing anything offensively.

  2. barktothefuture

Great write up. We got a bad whistle combined with bad fouls, they took advantage and made their free throws. Missed shots, didn’t execute, less effort. Steph led team in minutes, but felt like he could have played more. Seemed like end of 3q and beginning of 4q took forever with fouls and reviews felt like he sat on bench for an hour.

  3. Any mention of the Refs in describing why the W’s lost this game is extreme copium and delusion.

  4. Title should be “Refs Escorts Knicks to win in 4th.”

sidenote: amazing insight and work – definitely applaud that dedication!

  5. Biggest13

The whistle was unbalanced especially in the second half.

The warriors lost the game in the first quarter when they once again came out with no energy, dug themselves a huge hole, and let role players get their confidence up.

  6. Eventhegoodnewsisbad

They lost that game in the first quarter.

  7. Couldn’t imagine you doing this for the first 6 minutes of the game. What a heap that was.

  8. Drakilgon

The time wasting inbounds really pisses me off. Fuck any team that does that.

A lot of teams, including ours (well, just Podz and CP3), will waste time by rolling the ball up the court with the clock running. That’s annoying, but there’s a counter play to it, which is to simply defend the inbounds.

When someone just stands over the ball on the baseline playing chicken with the refs to see how long they’ll wait before blowing the whistle to stop the clock (which never seems to happen), there is no counter play. This needs to be an immediate delay of game and I don’t understand why it isn’t already.

  9. we also gav3 up 30 points in the first quarter but that’s the standard now apparently

  10. I personally thought they lost the game in the first seven minutes of the first quarter.

They just looked like they weren’t even together. I always have a problem with the team spotting their opponents at least 15 points before they get it going.

I almost think you gotta stop the game rearrange the floor personnel because you’ve got the fourth quarter to make up for your deficit.

But spotting a professional team almost 20 points in the first is a tough come back.

  11. poofybruno

Day Day lost the game for them when he couldn’t even make a damn open court layup, it would’ve cut the lead to 2, Time out Knicks then who knows from there, but instead NY runs it back and goes on a run to jack it back to a 10 point lead..night night warriors fans drive home safely

  12. Acceptable-Project42

Steph was nearly scoreless in 4th and defensive Roundbounds killed us, turnovers all over the place, don’t over analyze here.

    We will recover.

They lost this one in the first quarter.
