Atlanta Hawks winning streak halted in home loss to Milwaukee Bucks

On today’s show the Hawks winning streak is over at 4 and their home stand is not exactly perfect but in the end a very strong performance over the last five games for the Hawks we’re get into all of what transpar tonight against Milwaukee and much more and all of that is on the

Home tonight against the Milwaukee Bucks and their winning streak is now over at 4 um it was a successful home stand to be sure for for Atlanta also their fifth game in eight days and probably a little bit of Tire legs going on for the Hawks

In this spot this is the only visit to Atlant this year for Milwaukee after a couple games up in Milwaukee earlier this season the Hawks of course still short-handed in this one we come back to later on in the podcast only 10 guys available eight guys out Milwaukee was

Mostly healthy but they did have Damian h on the Shelf in this game who was of course their second best player but kind of basically a really ugly second quarter in this game for Atlanta they’re not as many as 21 points along the way they did re sort of you know repop re

Recover Etc violently throughout the course of this game Got Back into it in the fourth quarter they were in this game all the way to the end but never got over the top in their comeback bid and just as stage a little bit here the Hawks were four and a half Point

Underdogs in this game which at home semi-reasonable obviously without Lillard the Hawks being short-handed but a game against a good team Milwaukee came come into the game as the second best team in the Eastern Conference by record Atlanta of course just beat the number one seed a couple of times this

Week and by the way have those games broken down in depth on this podcast but Milwaukee played well in this game the Bo didn’t play a perfect game by any means they were short-handed in this one and we’ll kind of get into what transpired now so I would say big

Picture the defense struggled most of the night and that was uh borne out in the numbers across the board obviously the Bucks take a hit on offense a little bit with their talent without Damen Lillard who’s a very good player still at this point in time but Milwaukee’s

Size made for an absolutely brutal matchup for the Hawks defensively with their current Personnel available that certainly sort of should be a knowledge at the top of this podcast for one Giannis is a nightmare Yannis is nightmare for everyone basically but without Ona kongu and jayon Johnson who

I would argue the two best defenders against the against Giannis that they have on the roster um that is tough even someone like sadique Bay would have been helpful from a physicality standpoint just you know sheer bulk and toughness but no matter what the Hawks did in this

Game they were going to be giving up size basically everywhere and that leads to mismatches and cross matches and confusion and difficulty um didn’t help that the Bucks were allowed to kind of you know hang out in the lane most of the game on defense in this one Etc but

You know in the end the Hawks had a 125 defensive rating the Bucks did play pretty well but that number is pretty rough in a vacuum and also Milwaukee shot only eight of 28 from three now part of that is that their personnel wasn’t great from from three-point range

But it wasn’t like the Bucks shot the heck out of the ball in this game that’s why the Hawks lost this game it was that they couldn’t really stop them anywhere else um that number is positive but everything else is pretty ugly Milwaukee shot 70% on twos in this game which kind

Of tells you a little bit of what was transpiring there um they did to their credit I would say from Milwaukee pass the ball very well to exploit the mismatches across the board you know capella was on Giannis most of the night that kind of led to Lopez being able to

Have a smaller guy on him that led to Chris milon being covered by a smaller player in general and that was exploited along the way by the bucks um the Hawks also allowed 35 free throw attempts in addition to the 70% shooting on twoo shots that combination is obviously

Really tough that is the second most free throw attempts allowed this year by the Hawks and their first sorry the most they’ve allowed since early December so that kind of tells you a little bit of that obviously a little bit of that is Giannis attacking and but the Hawks had

Trouble defending without fouling in this game as well the one area where the Hawks actually were pretty good defensively was on the glass credit to Capella and sort of a gang rebounding aspect there but they didn’t give a lot of turnover Creation in this spot y did

Kind of whatever he wanted to in this game had 36 points 16 rebounds eight assists that’s a very typical Giannis game in some ways but still that’s a lot of production for one player and then Chris Middleton um was certainly super efficient in this game at 21 points on

10 shots which tells you the story there so all told the Hawks could have done a they did a better job recently I’ll say on defense given their personnel but this is sort of sort of a reminder especially in this matchup of how difficult it can be with where the Hawks

Currently are you know no Jaylen no Ana even sadik like they’re just pretty small and uh Milwaukee is the opposite of that milwauke is absolutely massive they have a huge Center and of course the X Factor in Giannis and uh it was like the Hawks played terribly

Defensively in this game but it wasn’t good enough and that was the number one reason why they were not able to win this one um on offense it wasn’t atrocious by any means they had one bad core essentially but it wasn’t great on the whole and look they had a 115 def

Offensive rating in this game that is not Fant fantastic but it’s actually kind of okay big picture um it’s that again that one quarter in the second quarter was really really gross and that kind of s things on the hole for the Hawks I’ll say this the Hawks won the

The three-point line by a lot in this game and coming in you know the Hawks W like massive underdogs the way they were against Boston but they were underdogs and I would have said coming in like if the Hawks win this game I would have expected them to outshoot the bucks from

The perimeter just given the Personnel around that happened in this game the Hawks were actually um 14 of 35 from three that’s 40% obviously that’s quite good now they could have taken a few more I thought and Quinn sort of alluded to that not necessarily specifically but

Sort of talked around that a little bit postgame about passing out some shots I would agree with that it was still a pretty good process overall on three-point shooting and they took a lot they made a lot and that was an X Factor in this game especially because again

Milwaukee made six fewer threes than the Hawks did that’s 18 points at the at three-point line that’s a pretty big swing towards you but everything else basically went to milwauke in the head to head the Hawks um inside the arc shot 49% that compares to 70% for Milwaukee

So that’s obviously a huge split toward the Bucks they took 17 fewer free throws in this game about half of what Milwaukee took also a huge swing there they did not they actually turn the ball over only 11 times but that led to directly 20 points from Milwaukee so

Another area where they were kind of able to exploit the Hawks in transition um they got to 24 assists in this game which isn’t a ton but I will say in the second half the Hawks had 18 assists he only had six in the first half that’s a

Very very very low number Quint Haw postgame a little bit about how he was happier with the process offensively in the second half I would definitely agree with that I thought in the first half the ball was sticking a lot offensively not a lot of ball movement a lot of kind

Of stagnant offense a lot of one-on-one Etc it was better after halftime but they were already down big and that kind of led to some of the problems and look it help the Hawks were 10 of 18 from three in the second half but they were better and that kind of made things

Interesting along the way on offense so you know overall I would say the Hawks played an average-ish game in this spot they certainly appeared to be a little bit fatigued I asked jonte Murray and click capella both individually after the game about this like they weren’t

Talking it wasn’t an excuse to kind of just talked about like you know it’s a challenge to play this many games five games in eight days a couple of them really really emotional especially those Boston games and uh Milwaukee came in and they were a little bit healthier

Than the Hawks were and took it to him a little bit so I would say you know obviously you don’t want to lose the game by nine or whatever end up the final score end up being it was pretty decisive by the end but the Hawks had a

A a great home stand at four- one and uh they were probably a little bit due for something like this so I’m not like going to rant and Rave obviously you shouldn’t get too high in the wins you shouldn’t get too low in the losses and

This sort of a good example over the last two games against quality opponents to win look to go four- one against this competition even to go one-onone against Milwaukee and Boston the last two games is all pretty good uh so the lost here they didn’t play great tonight they

Didn’t play Perfect tonight either or badly tonight necessarily but Milwaukee was just the better team and they executed well they had the best player in Giannis and that led to the Hawks just being a little bit short despite the fact that again the Hawks were pretty resilient in this one they did

Not roll over they could have rolled over a few times they never did and that’s a probably a good sign big picture for this Hawks team with that said I’ll have more on how things unfolded in this game how the individual players performed as well in this one

Pick more pick less it’s that easy with prize picks all right and to the game Flow in this spot first I will say I said a little bit earlier but the injury situation was unchanged for the Hawks in this game there was a little bit of a notable upgrade earlier Jaylen Johnson

Who’s now been out for six games in a row with the ankle sprain was question coming in that was an upgrade for him he didn’t play normally that means that he’s at least pretty close so I’m not saying he’s going to play Monday for sure but that’s a notable step forward

For Jaylen he’s been out flat out before this he didn’t play but that’s a little bit of a step forward for him also have note College Park played their last game of the year tonight so you could see someone like Seth Lundy who who returned

At the end of the year for College Park could be back in uniform for the Hawks as soon as Monday as well keep an eye on that um in in the near future and also just nowhere else to put guys so College Park season’s over and uh just file that

Away in the back of your mind anyway to the game itself Atlanta L this game 14 to six out of the gate and of course lost it from there but the Hawks technically scored four points on the first on the first possession uh they got a defensive three 3 second violation

On Brook Lopez and then a three-point shot in the beginning of this game um they had Capel on Yannis and that forced Hunter to defend Brook Lopez and then they had V on Chris Middleton but the Bucks had a big run later on a 23 to7 run in favor of Milwaukee uh

V had some trouble with Chris mson who had 12 points in the first N9 minutes of this game they sent Mor Middleton out of the timeout actually coming out of that and then they sort of doubled him and that led to a pretty easy layup for Milwaukee on the next on the next

Possession uh Bruno Fernando was pretty good later in this game he had a pretty rough stint in the first quarter to be sure on both end of the floor um moving screens and Miss shots and defensive breakdowns Etc um I will say Deon had a good start in this game had 11 points

But they that was kind of it on offense in that first quarter they were down by five points um then there was a big run by Milwaukee in the second so after a little bit of a shallow rotation in the first quarter they ended up playing all 10 guys that were active in

This spot for Atlanta played in the first 13 minutes and included TR Forest Dylan Windler and Wes Matthews uh playing together a little bit of a crazy lineup there obviously kind of out of necessity but still a little bit tough on offense in that stretch um wiler by

The way only played in the first half not the second half they managed to avoid disaster with the full-on bench unit uh for the most part they were only down by 7 or eight points but then Milwaukee had their biggest run of the game a seven to four push to go from

Hawks down by five um to Bucks up by 18 with about 2 minutes to go in the half the hwks scored Four Points in about six and a half minutes and that ended up that wasn’t like the end of the game but if you’re looking at one stretch the

Entire night that kind of decided this one it was that one 174 and the Hawkers could not score in the second quarter fast forward they scored 17 points in the second quarter and that kind of burn them along the way they ended the half a little bit better capella had a great

Rep on theas we actually Stone him at The Rim that was nice to see and then bie got to the line bogie also made like a 60-footer um right after the buzzer at halftime didn’t count it wasn’t that close to counting but it was obviously a

Fun shot they were down 14 points at halftime with a 90 offensive rating yikes um that was kind of where the game was and as I mentioned before I’ll just say it again they had six assists in the first half on 17 field goals that’s a

Very very bad ratio and a very low number of assists for a half um in the second half they were down 21 basically right away it was a 125 run by Milwaukee Giannis and Middleton got wherever they wanted to in that stretch bogy then had a turnover they tried to foul Giannis

Didn’t work and that was the low water mark of of the night for the for the Hawks they were my 21 points in the third quarter as I sort of said before though credit to them for not rolling over the Hawks got back into this game

They never LED but they got within five like they were really really battling when they didn’t have to necessarily in that stretch they fin made some threes that was certainly part of it bogy Wes and Garrison Matthews all made a bunch of threes in a hurry in the third

Quarter that overall run got them back within 12 force a timeout um I thought that Malik Beasley who’s a local product of Atlanta was really bad for most of this game including that and that stretch for the bucks kind of helping out the Hawks a little bit and at that

Point in time um the Hawks were down 15 the end of the quarter still like not really in it um there was a tough swing late in the third where Deon got called for an offensive foul kicking his leg out on a three that was actually the

Right call but then moments later the same thing happened on the defense and it was not called on Jay Crowder it was called on the Hawks so kind of a bad beat there for three points essentially the Hawks did shoot five of nine from three in the third quarter and the Bucks

Were one of seven unfortunately though the Hawks lost the quarter which is not a great sign um in the fourth though they made their run so the Bucks usually rest Giannis to begin the fourth quarter and they knew that that was the best window for the Hawks to make a run in

This game and they did it to their credit 15 to5 to begin the fourth quarter Bruno had a huge energy stretch he had a three-point play actually went right at Patrick Beverly and screamed like intentionally in his face which was kind of an amusing moment Beverly then shoved him with two hands

That led to a technical foul on both sides that was memorable to be sure um then Hunter and bogy hit threes and the lead was down to five was 744 to go so that after they were done by 21 points in the third quarter they got within

Five with plenty of time remaining um and that was closest the Hawks been since the first half it was a nice little stretch from the Hawks unfortunately it slowly went back up to like 12 or 13 with Yannis chipping away a little bit Capell did score four straight points they were back within

Seven or eight with three and a half minutes to go but they kept trading buckets that you can’t really do that when you’re down by seven or eight points late in the game Giannis then scored D Jon had had a charge then Beasley had a dagger three in the corner

And that was basically the end of the game with like putting the Hawks down to 13 points with like two minutes to go it wasn’t totally over in fact the Hawks got back with him in seven seven or eight again bogie went pretty nuts in the second half of this game shot making

Wise um but you know it wasn’t I would say it was not really a threat to actually close things off for Atlanta and that is why they sort of ended up where they were in this spot but still like the Hawks again not to overstate it too much they were they’ve shown this

Resilience really all year long even early in the year when they were losing games they probably should win it wasn’t because they weren’t like they weren’t rolling over like this has been a I would say a characteristic in a positive direction of this Hawks team even though

I’m acknowledging and I’ll say it again this has been a disappointing for the Hawks on the hole they’re not where they wanted to be but they’ve been like bouncing back in games and they’ve been like staying with it chipping away did it again tonight it didn’t get over the

Top but it doesn’t always get over the top like the game against Boston on Monday when they race the 30-point deficit that’s the outlier like usually a team like that even when you’re battling you’ll get back into it and you might run out of gas a little bit in

This game they got into it they never really rolled over it’s just that they couldn’t get over the top and uh we’ll leave it there for now anyway more on this game coming up when it comes to the individual player stuff in the spot but first I’ll tell you about our friends at

Appeared for the right now they’re so short-handed that everybody basically everyone’s playing so that’s part of it but they had 10 guys appear in this game the other one that played four minutes that was the least on the team he was not great in his stint had did not score

Two rebounds in four minutes uh I like Trent Forest a lot I’ll say that as always if you’re a new listener you wouldn’t know that um I Pro Tri I thought he was quite bad in this game actually he struggled pretty mightily um fortunately for the Hawks this is kind

Of funny they they’re actually plus one in his six minutes and he only played when when when Deon sat so if that’s that’s all you saw you might think that Deon wasn’t great and Trent was no I think Trent actually struggled pretty badly it’s just that they were able to

Kind of Dodge bullets in that stretch um Trent had better games for sure but it was not his best work in this game Garis Matthews similar didn’t play great in this way had three points one three from the floor one three from three had an assist and a rebound was minus six in

His minutes kind of just quiet from Garrison not awful but just not a huge impact West Matthews played better and played more minutes than Garrison did nine nine points a steal an assist um plus two in his minutes three he actually had a couple nice drives in a

Way he isn’t usually usually taking a lot of Threes right now which is fine but uh he was more physical and more aggressive as a driver and finisher around the rim in this spot defensively he competed I thought he was fine Off the Bench gave him some good minutes uh

Bruno A Tail of two halves Bruno in the first half really struggled second half much better did have 10 points four rebounds two assists and a block four fouls ining a techical foul did Bruno have in this game he was two3 from the free throw line a couple actually had

One nice like 10 10 foot 12 jump shot nice to see that from MTO some touch that he showed in this in this spot overall he was fine just kind of a roller coaster to get there let’s say um to the starters v c only took five shots

V is low usage right now um notable enough but I thought he played fine um defensively he was overmatched against Chris Middleton it’s a reminder that like V’s got good length but he is pretty thin and is not always the most physical guy defensively he’s been playing better let to be sure

Defensively but he was it was a rough one against Middleton at times in this game for V did did have two sorry two threes in this game had an assist two rebounds had a steal he was fine um overall D Hunter didn’t shoot it great

He had 13 points on 13 shots he was three of eight on twos two of five on threes two rebounds an assist and a steal uh not his best work either I thought he was okay a couple nice flashes but nothing terribly impressive beyond that capella I thought was pretty

Good on the whole 10 points eight rebounds two blocks two assists and a steal Clint after the game sort of a knowledge what I’ve been talking about for a while his legs are kind of back right now he’s feeling pretty good he looked good Quint talks about that also

Pregame or whatever it was but I thought that Clint looked okay it wasn’t like he was as good as he’s been recently I think he had a great month of March um I I shared this on Twitter yesterday but he has by far the the best onoff splits

In the month of March like the Hawks were like plus 10 in the month of March with Clint on the court and like way minus when he was off the court so that’s not necessarily indicative but I thought that he actually did play quite well and for the last month and really

Beyond that so if they had that guy things Chang for the Hawks they’re just better with this version of Clint obviously at his age you can’t make on this all the time but the way he’s playing right now has been very very helpful to this recent run I think

Pretty pretty underrated obviously a lot of attention paid and rightly so to guys like DJ and bogey but Clint’s Improvement has helped them a ton right now especially witha available um to the backourt um we’ll save B for the end Deonte kind of a tale of games for Deonte he was

Okay okay in this one ended up with 20 points 12 assists is a very good number eight rebounds five turnovers minus 10 he was hot early he had five of eight shooting from the floor in the first quarter for 11 points rest of the game

After that he was two of 11 for nine points so look he’s been carrying a massive workload and I’m sure his legs are feeling that right now his back has been a bothering him recently he wasn’t as good as the counting stats I don’t think in this game but obviously he was

Huge against the uh against Boston on Thursday so he was fine he wasn’t the problem just didn’t have his absolute aame in this game bogy though did bogie had 38 points that’s a season high for bogie he was two points shot of a career high in this game and actually took a

Couple threes at the very end that would have put him over uh it didn’t actually happen but he was really good offensively also had a career-high 10 rebounds yes career-high for a guy who’s been around for a while but he was seven- 14 on twos which is very good and

Then 59 from three and n 10 at the line so super efficient um obviously very productive 38 points to lead all scores monster night from bogie uh hopefully that helps the bolster Sixth Man of the Year argument people keep asking this I keep and I will keep saying I think he

Is if not the front runner for me would be high on the list I don’t think he’s going to win it but I think he probably should be much more of a candidate and yes he’s starting right now but he is going to qualify with with the games

Played as a reserve for six man of the year he should be high the list and that this obvious should help him he’s been great this season on the whole he was awesome in this game okay from here um there’s an obvious lean toward it being

The end of the season now of course but given all the information that we have after 74 games which have been played so far um one of the most impactful games of the season is scheduled for Monday at least we’re talking about the actual standings and being practical about

What’s going on obviously the Hawks are not where they want to be right now as as the 10 seed but uh as far as this season and the Practical implications Monday’s game in Chicago against the Bulls is a big one it might sound crazy to have this game this High because it’s

Two teams that are below 500 but the winner is going to have the leg up for the nine seed and if the Hawks lose on Monday it is not impossible but it will be a big time uphill climb to get to nine if that matters to you at all um

And partly because the Bulls have the tiebreaker no matter what happens on Monday they already won the first two games so um the path to the playoffs is undoubtedly easier if the first play in game 910 game is actually in Atlanta versus Chicago that’s the reality now

You could certainly argue and it’ be I would say reasonable to say this that they you know it’s only two or three points in a projection maybe four points whatever it’s going to be from the game happening in Chicago to the game happening in Atlanta but home court

There does matter uh and also it’s a small sample size but to this point in NBA history as short as short as it is no 10 seed has made it out of the play in either conference so it will happen eventually but it has not happened yet because just practically speaking it’s

Hard to win two must-win games on the road in a row just the math on that is not great now the Hawks could do it no question about that it’s just harder so all that said the game Monday is notable for that particular reason that they’re battling the Bulls head-to-head for the

N9c after tonight’s loss the Hawks have a one game deficit in the standings to the Bulls but again the Bulls have the tiebreaker so functionally it’s a two- game deficit right now because they have the Hawks have to beat the Bulls in the standings not just TI they have to beat

Them and let’s just say this if the Hawks lose on Monday it’s not over but they will be pretty huge underdogs to be the N SE if they would on Monday and tie it there’s more work to do but it’s much more in play so again I’ll let you decide how much

You care about that but I think it would be helpful for the Hawks to have that first playing game at home technically they’re not eliminated from being higher than that there was some talk tonight about like maybe the Hawks see the books in the playoffs in the

First round it’s like well probably not yes the Hawks could technically get to the seven or eight C but they’ have to probably win out to have any chance of doing that which they could do but it’s eight more games I think that’s a sub

Five% chance to be kind so I think they top spot they could probably get to realistically pre-play in is the nine seed and Monday’s game is a big one through that lens it’s in Chicago so 8:00 start stay tuned for that one but more of a longer pre- able that I would

Do on a game coming up in a couple days but it is one that is uh going to stand out a little bit before the Hawks come back home on Wednesday against Detroit so that’s a pretty favorable game but then after that quickly they go to
