What Tyrese Haliburton did to have his best offensive game since All-Star break | Pacers beat Nets

Pacers beat the Nets comfortably a dominant first half a wonderful offensive performance and Tyrese halberton starting to look a little bit like himself again in this one we have a lot to talk about and some add an stuff on today’s lockon Pacers podcast you are locked on Pacers your daily Indiana

Pacers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what up y’all happy Tuesday and welcome into another edition of the lockon Pacers podcast where are we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always my name’s Tony East I cover the team for

Forbes and Si and today lots and lots to dive into for a Pacers win a good one over the Nets the Nets stink but the Pacers played them like a team that stinks and the Pacers have rarely done that this season crushing the Nets up 30 at

Times end up winning the game by 22 while coasting down the stretch with the Deep reserves the offense looked fantastic especially in the first half Tyrese halber was soaring the center rotation was all over the place in both a good way and a way that we have to

Talk about with mouse Turner’s finger going the complete wrong direction and the Mad Ants play in the playoffs tonight let’s catch up on some g-league stuff because we have a lot to get to today but we of course start with Pacers Nets win number 43 for the Pacers

Elsewhere tonight by the way the Hawks beat the Bulls meaning neither the Hawks or the Bulls can get to 43 wins the Pacers have secured a top eight seed they guaranteed at least two games beyond the regular season and that is in part because of this win the Pacers got

Over the Brooklyn Nets on April Fool’s Day starts off 40 Nets looking like oh no Pacers may not be taking this one as serious as they need to another one of their slow starts Pacers tied the game up at four and never Trail again so never mind the no no slow start they

Went up 13 to4 after that 40 Nets run to start the game tyres Halbert was out scoring the Nets 14 to13 Midway through the first quarter an Absolut dominant start to this game for the Pacers despite that 40 opening and halberton was the story early but really the

Pacers offense in general I think was kind of the story of this game right after their best defensive game of course when you score 133 things are going to look good but their first half offense and the numbers is just outrageous everything off the charts and looking good the Pacers in the first

Half 40% from Deep 58.8% from the field only five turnovers to dwell on the offensive glass forced the Nets into turnovers forced the Nets to foul the Nets were two for 13 from Deep so the Pacers were in transition and they were hitting their own shots yakum made six halberton made Seven

Jaylen Smith didn’t miss I mean they just had Great Performances all over the place and at halftime when you have your two stars that are combined for 34 points at halim you’re going to win so that’s how the Pacers set the tone in this game is they were just absolutely

Humming offensively and it wasn’t even an awesome second quarter they had some slippage in the second quarter their defense got worse in the second half but their first quarter was just so good 43 points in that quarter six of 11 from Deep they made a bunch of their twos

They were almost at 70% shooting before Miss buzer beer in the first quarter it was was terrific offense by the Pacers you can point to any number of things that went well and we’ll talk about all of them on this show but something I want to start with is turnovers

Turnovers obviously something I talk about a good amount with the Pacers is The Possession game how important it can be yada yada and it’s been well talked about that having more chances to score is a good thing for teams in this game the Nets and Pacers close to even on the

Offensive glass but the turnover battle was way in favor of the Pacers nine turnovers for the Pacers excellent only two players on the team had two turnovers now was Pascal seaka and Miles Turner everybody else had one or fewer that’s excellent the Nets had 15 for example which is actually okay um four

For trendon Watford and two or less for everybody else but nine is obviously fewer and having the ball is obviously valuable I’ve said obviously so many times uh is is valuable uh but you you know it’s easy for the other team to score out of turnovers it breaks up the rhyth of the

Game in in a way that hurts your team the Pacers are very good when they don’t turn over the ball this was the 18th time this season that they’ve had fewer than 10 turnovers in a game they are 13 and five 13 and five in those games the

Losses are at Boston Chicago who’s given them fits with their R defense Boston again at Miami and at Boston so three of the five are to Boston right so they are very good in these games they do not turn the ball over very much and they

Are able to win those games very often in fact you remove the Boston games again they’re 13 and two again and the two losses one against a team that’s their Kryptonite this season and W against a good Heat team uh it’s just that’s what it’s going to take

For the Pacers sometimes to win a game if your offense isn’t humming taking care of the ball gives you a chance uh that that wouldn’t necessarily be there without it so that was one thing that stood out about their offense is just taking care of it and the chances that

Led to their passes were crisp 35 assists for the Pacers in this game and the point guards in particular accounted for 27 of them six for Andrew neard 13 for Tes halber and eight for TJ McConnell they were all doing well to get the offense in motion and the Nets

Def I don’t even know what to call what the Nets were doing on defense I mean after giving up 82 in the paint 84 a lot to the Pacers in March they give up 70 today Pacers were just walking to the rim they were generating whatever shot

They want they weren weren’t turning it over that’s how you have a dominant offensive game and the second half was not particularly pretty for the Pacers on the defensive end they allowed 64 for the Nets they actually lost the second half they were coasting a bit but they

Were able to get to their deep reserves because their offense was so good in the first half and that carried into the third quarter where they scored 33 points and shot it well from Deep again and only had three turnovers it was just a brilliant offensive night for the

Pacers who have had Obviously good offensive games of late I don’t want to diminish a top 10 offense in what it can do right you can look get raw numbers and see they scored 133 and 145 on back-to-back nights on their recet road trip but you you the 133 they scoring

Here is I believe their fourth best game since the All-Star break and a number that usually only pops up against the Mavericks or a team from La so to reach this total uh it’s actually only the fifth time they’ve reached 133 since January 25th so a little over two months

Really good offensive game for the Pacers so of course the turnover number is the one that stood out to be the most watching the game they’re es were great to have 35 assists to nine turnovers they made threes obviously they generated good ones 13 for 31’s what

They finished they were on fire in the first half but where I would like to go with this now and this will cross over from the first segment to the second segment is Tyrese halberton Tyrese halberton this was maybe his best game since the allar break maybe I will say

That it is because of how little time it took him to have the night that he had uh for the Pacer starters in this game four of them excuse me three of them played last Le than half the game seak Turner and nard played less than 24

Minutes Aaron n Smith played 25 and a half and halberton played 2645 that’s how much the Pacers dominated this game and halberton was a huge part of it plus 26 in this game um Nets had no answers for him 27 points 13 assists four rebounds one steel one block there’s a

Lot to dive into about what halberton was doing right he was a big part of them starting 47 from Deep he was click early but like he played different he played with a Pizzazz a burst an Effectiveness level that hasn’t been there and the the stats or the plays

That I could point to to very easily talk about that is dunks he dunks twice in this game two times hyped after both uh I asked him about you know playing well and dunking after the game I asked him one you played like that and had the

Burst and transition and scored a bunch how are you feeling physically after a game like that and two playing like that having a game like that having a big night when you’ve been going through this slump emerging from it though recently how much fun was that like how

Did that game all feel to you and he went on to talk about how the team which started with Buddy heeld and now it’s led by Obby to and and jerus Walker give him crap for his athleticism level uh so it felt good for him to get over that

Hump and prove something to his teammates but of course he also was happy to play well and guide the Pacers offense he ends up FaceTiming buddy heeld in the media room to to ask what he heed if he saw his dunks I say all that background to say Tyrese halberton clearly proud of

That right clearly happy with being able to have two impressive athletic plays one of them coming off of a beautiful fake pass to the corner in transition that got a Defender out of his way before the dunk that’s the kind of stuff that shows some signs of progress both

In terms of a player with confidence and how they’re feeling and maybe Health uh if health is a factor right like he’s never said it I keep saying Tyrese halber says it’s not a factor and I’m inclined to believe him but you know no great player wants to share their

Weakness or feel any sort of way like that so impossible to say but he looked awesome uh his stats were fantastic the highlight plays were there and we planed to talk about with his game and if it actually was the number one best Tyrese halberton game since the All-Star break

Again the stats say maybe the effectiveness says maybe the win says very much a good chance but there’s a lot more to it than just that then we have to talk about the centers who had that rotation just had a wild night in general an injury to Miles Turner

Potentially a story to Monitor and plenty more coming on the locked on Pacers podcast before we get to any of that though this next segment is brought To Us by our sponsor betterhelp sometimes we only the opportunity to get something off our chest Bigg or small certain

Things can really start to get you it’s it’s important to let that out especially to someone who is unbiased on your life so today I want to say how I really feel about something you a’t even think of the same thing this week I think Zack Ed’s college career at Purdue

Is getting is getting underrated two-time National Player of the Year and of course losing to a 16 seed is brutal and he hasn’t won the Second National player of the year yet but his level of dominance is is so rare in college basketball I mean he’s having a

Phenomenal run right now his stats speak for themselves and I know that people keep saying oh it’s just because he’s tall yeah but he’s he is that height that will never go away and he’s using it to do to dominate and I’ve seen plenty of tough players not dominate

Like this Zack Edy very good therapy can be different for everyone most of us have bigger problems than a sports team and their best player and their place in history it’s important to get things off your chest every once in a while if you’ve been thinking of starting therapy

Listen today and every single day for a second listen lock down NBA CU I was on it yesterday and they of course covered the big topics around the league or lockon Nets to hear about the uh who barely clinging to a chance at making the plan one loss away from playing

Elimination Brooklyn Nets what a yuck season for the Brooklyn Nets who could could not stop Tyrese Halbert in this game uh the dunks were of course the signs of Pop the threes were of course Fantastic Four for seven for deep from Deep excuse me from Tyrese halber in

This game he had that game where he was six for n uh on the road trip in in La against the Clippers one of his best shooting games in a long time but today being over 50% that’s just the second time including that Clippers game uh since the All-Star break right before the

Break you had that five for n game against Toronto since then he’s been over 50% twice from three in a game against the Clippers last Monday and against the Nets last night so twice in eight days if that’s not a sign of emerging from a slump I don’t know what

It is I’m not saying he’s out of it yet he still has some rocky games along the way three for 11 against Chicago on Wednesday two for six against the Lakers right it’s not maybe not over but again clear signs of progress coming for Tyrese hurn another great shooting game

And again amazing on twos hits half or excuse me hits five out of eight from inside the arc again 27 and 13 looking back at his stats since the All-Star break 27 points he has not reached that number period since the allstar break that is his best scoring game in that

Stretch previous best he had 26 in that key win over the Warriors in Golden State he had 23 in that home win over Minnesota and he had 25 in the very first game out of the break uh against the Pistons and that was the game I said oh he looks

Healthy he looks back and he played okay until March started and then completely fell off with Cliff as a shooter uh this was by from a scoring perspective his best game since the break 13 assists his second best number since the break he had 14 when they lost to Chicago at home

In the middle of March he’s had 13 a bunch of times that Detroit game I just mentioned when they beat the Pelicans at homie had 13 when they beat or played excuse me Minnesota at homie had 13 now again um so up there with his best passing games since the break so

Statistically off off offensively this was his best game since the allstar break and if you watched it you could see that the burst was there the dunks were there the passing was there the shooting was there first half especially just totally dominant I know I talked

About that for the Pacers as a team but in the first half for Tyrese halberton specifically he had 21 points four rebounds and seven assists at halim at halftime they were he was they were plus 21 in his minutes out of their 28-point lead just dominant right um so I think I

Could make this argument I’m not saying I will uh the Golden State game when he had 26 and 11 to go with some really great defensive moments I think he had four steals four blocks in that game I think that might be my top Tyrus halberton game since the break he was

Awesome that night the Detroit game still uh was quite good the Minnesota game was pretty good uh but this might be this I think this is for sure at least his best offensive game since the All-Star break and now quietly rounding into form right since I think really at

Detroit is the game that he took only three threes really settled in as a two-point score they dominated his minutes still we had that whole conversation with Tyler Brooke on this show about you know should he focus on inside the ark shots more should he divert away from the threes and we both

Said no and he didn’t he started shooting again right away but since that Detroit game I think tyes hurns turned a corner and is at least emerging from the slump and today had his best offensive game since the All-Star break a leader leading the team to a win in their

Playoff Pursuit great game from tyres hurn at a much needed time that’s how the Pacers got it done and now we have to talk about some weirdness some Badness some will who knows uh right before halftime big bummer big gross if you saw a picture of this uh or you were

At the game and you saw it actually happen uh Pacers up huge huge just before halftime Miles Turner catches the ball and drives toward the basket with about a minute to go in the first half and his finger hits the rim and bends not the right way it is there some

Tweets that it was 90 degrees the wrong way that is not that is wrong it was not 90 degrees the wrong way it was like 30 maybe a lot more than it should be though and it was gross they immediately cut the Jumbotron to jerus Walker who

Just looked right at it and jarus Walker is making this face like like I If you’re watching on YouTube you can see it but he just looked so like stunned to have seen it so mes Turner’s like holding it there and he runs over to a trainer like the trainer’s gonna pop it

Right back into place and then he just Sprints back to the locker room Pacers called timeout Turner comes back the finger looks normal again but he has to take the free throws if he wants to stay in the game so he takes him left-handed makes the second one and then

Immediately hurn intentionally fouls and Turner went out and never returned to the game uh so that’s obviously a problem for the Pacers they were up so much that tonight uh or whatever Monday night for you listening it did not matter for the game right they did not miles had an awesome first half

Defensively and cleaned up a bunch of mistakes made by the Pacers he only played 14 minutes and 13 seconds and he had five blocks and six rebounds right he was awesome on defense he made two threes he had nine points in that stretch really played a wonderful

1413 of game before the finger injury they shouldn’t have needed him to clean up as many things as he did though without him they were much worse on defense but still um they were up so much because of how he played and how well the team played in the first half

That it didn’t matter in this specific game that they lost him uh but it could matter we asked for Carlile after the game for a status update there even really was one on Miles he said well xris your negative for a fracture so it’s a dislocation or some other word

That I’m not a doctor but some other word to describe what it is exists that isn’t fracture so that’s good news uh and Carlile non-committal about Turner status for Wednesday literally a game uh in two days or a day whatever against the same Nets team look finger injuries

Can linger or can be a problem but if he’s able to play or at least be out there that’s huge huge for the Pacers we’ll see what the status looks like but the fact that it’s not broken is very significant that can hold guys out for

Weeks and weeks um so that’s huge it looked really gnarly really gnarly at the time and he was playing a wonderful game so uh we’ll see when he can return again Nets Wednesday Thunder Friday and then the Pacers biggest game of the season the Miami Heat on Sunday it’s not

There yet we’re not quite at this level um for that game to be as important as possible the teams being tied in the St would be the way but if the Pacers win their very next game then they have done their job of making that game epic uh

The heat need to win twice this week and then it and then it’s guaranteed to be basically a playoff game on April 7th Pacers did part of their job tonight the Turner’s injury looming large we’ll see what comes of that it’s impossible to say right now Pacers don’t practice on

Tuesday um so we will figure it out uh as time comes with the team Jaylen Smith started the second half and was playing awesome Jaylen Smith in the first half was really good I was actually thinking like when I was trying to figure out what I was going to write about after

The game maybe I’ll go a Halbert Direction an offensive Direction maybe a Jaylen Smith Direction first half Jaylen Smith 10 points and three boards plus nine did not miss four for four from the field and three free throw attempts he was awesome for the Pacers second unit

McConnell didn’t have to do as much as he normally does although he St six points and six assists in the first half um Ben Shepard in foul trouble so they had to go to jarus for a little bit uh but but Jaylen Smith was Rock salid to

Keep that group together and keep them humming and so starting him in the second half seemed like great this is awesome and in the third quarter Jaylen Smith played for six minutes and five seconds and had seven points and seven boards four of them on the offensive end

He was helping a great deal and then catastrophe we have a little more to talk about with Jaylen Smith and closing out this game before we talk about the Mad Ants before we get into any of that though we have to talk about game time if buying tickets has ever been

Frustrating for you you have to try game time how do I know I’ve used it before and it was amazing game time helped me get tickets to New York Liberty game in New York and it is the now authorized ticket Marketplace of Major League Baseball which makes getting tickets

Tickets lowest price guaranteed and we are back here on lockdown Pacers thanks for making us your first listen today and every single day for your second listen check out locked on bulls why because they keep beating the Pacers and they are locked into the play in in the East they’re too

Good to get CAU by the Nets they’re not good enough to catch the Pacers the Bulls are in the playin tournament in some way and are now an irrelevant thing on standings watch you will not hear the word bulls or Hawks actually you kind of will but only for a sentence on

Standings watch ever again this season they cannot catch the Pacers um let’s finish with Jaylen Smith in this game and what it meant Jaylen Smith gets smacked in the face by Dennis shuder on a drive twice the first one inadvertent the second one looked not inadvertent

And the rest also deemed that he got a technical foul for it smack jayen Smith right in the goggles I can understand why a guy that wordss goggles gets mad about getting hit in the face uh Jaylen Smith retaliates with a shove of Dennis shuder into the stands U probably

Shouldn’t do that probably shouldn’t hit a guy in the face they both messed up a tech for shuder flagrant two for Smith he gets ejected for the shove he was playing awesome so now all of a sudden Turner’s out for the game with this finger injury and Jaylen Smith is a

Rejected and can’t play for the rest of the game so for the final quarter and a half the Pacers had to go either Isaiah Jackson who played 1416 of the game they went small with Obi topping at the five next to jarus for a little bit Isaiah

Jackson played the rest uh and was just terrific every time he plays he has eight points three boards two blocks didn’t miss a shot Isaiah Jackson gets another great big thumbs up from me he was great um again Obi topping at the five field then jerus ends up playing 13

Minutes and 20 seconds of quality basketball all worked out in the end but losing two centers was pretty tough like the Pacers did not play as well uh down the stretch of this game Rick Carlile tonally not as happy with his team’s performance as I expected him to be for

A team that absolutely dominated the first half and was up by 30 for a lot of this game they lost the second half they out scored 5864 gave up 64 points you know that that he didn’t like that defense needs to be better than that even though they still cruised and I

Think the center rotation being so funky for injury and ejection reasons was part of it but the Pacers still got it done either way 27 and 13 for hton 17- 10 for Smith in 15.5 minutes he was terrific and should have been a story of the game

Obi toin was very good Pascal sakam was as his usual level Aaron n Smith was plus 28 in 25 and a half minutes you get the gist the Pacers need to keep winning and they did so once again and tonight the playoff start for the organization

Just not what you’re thinking the Mad an the Indiana mad an it’s so weird to say that still uh host the Delaware Blue coats tonight in gamebridge Fieldhouse it’s the first playoff game for the G League this year mad finished with the three seed in the East they were almost

The two seed uh they they lost it on the last night they did all they could with the main Celtics just held them off the Mad ANS were amazing for the first part of the Season called the Showcase cup but that record doesn’t count for the

Regular season which is kind of dumb uh but whatever matad an 23 and 11 three seed in the East so they get to host the first round of the playoffs against the Delaware blue coat that’s at 7:30 tonight on Tuesday uh perhaps you want to go see it because I’m guessing that

All the Pacers 2A guys so Oscar she Isaiah Wong and Quinton Jackson Isaiah Wong by the way gets a shout out today he debuted in the NBA against the Nets and scored his first points uh that was his first game that will count for stats and on basketball reference for example

Because the Lakers be played in was the inseason tournament finals anyway the two-way guys I just mentioned and I’m guessing this uh Kendall Brown will probably get assigned to the madance tomorrow and so that’ll be those guys and the good madance players we’ll talk about in a second all down on that team

That is they are really good when they have all those guys right that’s been when they’ve been the most threatening this season and if they have all of them I think they can beat anybody including Delaware so I’m looking forward to seeing who all is playing and what the

Rotation looks like because the Mad Ants have been pretty good at to catch you up to speed on what they mean for the Pacers it’s a little different right now than in past years they already did the promotion that they usually do it was Kendall Brown this year going from

Two-way to standard deal and then Quinton Jackson gets the two-way in his spot they don’t have a roster spot right now there’s nobody they can call up but the the of interesting would be for example Mojave King uh who the Pacers drafted 47th overall in the draft last

Year right and he ends up getting stashed with the matad ANS he was going to play overseas but he had this left foot injury uh and the Mad Ants are playing in gamebridge because they’re in between stadiums they’re moving from Fort Wayne to Noblesville so they use the Pacers practice facility and they

Play in gambri so there’s Pacers Personnel around all the time and you get great facilities for a g-league team that’s very appealing so Mojave King actually for his development great place to land uh he hasn’t been shooting or scoring at all particularly well coach Tom hanin said his feels really good but

He’s one guy to watch for this mad an’s team uh the rest of them are guys that think could be 2A good or even in one case NBA good I just really like this guy but Quinton Jackson their new 2A guy has been awesome 22.3 points per game

His efficiency has been unbelievable as this jumbo Creator he’s really good uh Kendall Brown plays very well every time he gets signed he’s over 17 points per game Kyle Mangus uh some of you might go why why have I heard that name before from Warsaw went to Indiana Wesleyan was

Lighting up for like 30 points a game at and Indiana Wesleyan is a killer score 17 points a game almost 39% from Deep on six attempts per game he can really fill it up as well uh Alfred Peyton former top 10 pick good scorer and awesome distributor nine assists a game he

Crushes it at point guard uh when the Mad are really trying to click as much as they can Isaiah Wong plays two next to Alfred Peyton and Payton does the Distributing they were trying to develop more passing chops and Isaiah Wong and they he got better at it he’s over he’s

To three and a half assists on the season right now in the G League uh but Payton is just so masterfully good for them as I said it man they used to have Jordan Bell dominating in the post he is now in China but those guys I’ve already

Mentioned and Pedro Bradshaw who I just think is a fantastic player 40% three-point shooter long Defender uh that’s the guys that matter and the guys well they all matter but that’s the guys who’ have been the best and the most impactful for this man’s team throughout

The season uh and are going to be crucial tonight when they take on Delaware at home in the playoffs good chance for a lot of these two guys to continue to cement themsel and try to earn either a Pacers spot next year or another two-way like Kendall Brown did

Last year or Brian Bowen did a couple years ago we’ve seen the Pacers go that route before right so there is something to prove for all those guys in that case the guys who don’t have an NBA deal or are trying to earn prove that they should get one like Mojave King who

They’ll have his rights again next year but are fighting for just that right Wong wants another two-way sh probably does too Kyle Mangus probably does you know you could Quinton Jackson Mojave everybody everybody wants the NBA contracts uh but there are a lot of more successful guys so the the manatts play

Like the Pacers they play fast they had a few more Wings last year than they do this year but their guard play has been so good that they’re really good sheway is amazing on the glass in the g- league 16 a game I mean that just changes games

I think they’re good enough to beat Delaware if they win they’ll go to Maine for the semi-finals and then we’ll see from there but worth tuning in if you can uh those games are fun to watch there’s NBA tal on the floor and that’s where the Mad Season is at they had a

Good regular season they had a great great showcase cup and now it’s playoff time for the Pacers G League affiliate and it could be as many as four Pacers players playing in that game Tuesday night and I suspect many of them uh will actually be tuning in to watch it

Whether that’s in person or on their phone or at home whatever uh tomorrow on the show Alex Golden’s gonna join us for another Pacers topics dour with the playoffs playing whatever in about two weeks looking forward uh to that one then Wednesday we’ll of course talk about whatever happened or excuse me

Thursday we’ll talk about whatever happened in Pacers Nets round three and do standings watch before Friday’s game uh against the Thunder their best opponent this week so plenty more to come here on the lockon Pacers podcast hope you guys enjoyed Today’s show you can find me on Twitter at Tony R East

  1. 1st season since I've been A Pacer fan which is over 30 years that I've actually cared that Myles might not be able to play. THATS how good of A season He's having relative to seasons past including last year.

That being said, I'm more then confident Jalen and Jackson can step up. This is why you have A fresh Jackson on the bench primed and ready just in case.

  2. Tony I fell my pinky finger looked like a "Z". i personally reset it in mid stride and it has been fine for 20÷ years.
Great show keep up the good work!
