Difference a year makes right I mean my gosh it was one agonizing loss after another this time last year and now it is just one amazing win after another yes they’re coming off a loss at the end of the the road trip but it was a 4in

McGee the whole game K had like 40 right but they still lost my gosh yeah yeah uh yeah he had 41 the Charlotte losses had already happened so the end of the season was nigh the tanking talk was was far and wide I got some somebody tweeted

At me a uh the screenshot of me reacting to The Hornet’s losses just like slumped over my chair and like a bottle of wine in my hand just like very different very different so we’ll look at we’ll look at maybe the year in the Mavs I guess and how they’ve

Turned it around and especially the last couple of months we’ll look at how the Mavericks have turned this whole thing around and uh and really just taking a a huge step forward and become a lot of people’s Darkhorse team they’re they’re you know maybe a straightup contender

Team there’s a lot of things we’ll get into we’ll talk about uh there’s Health there’s offensive changes there defensive changes but there’s one change that I really want to talk about and let’s start here Dana the Mavs have turned it around almost completely since February 5th Dallas is 19 and S second

Best record in the NBA they have the third best offense tied for third best offense they have the eight best defense so top 10 in both in the last February March beginning of April so two months and some change and since March 7th they’re 11- two with the sixth best

Offense and the third best defense their defense is even trending trending up which is has been amazing and I think one of the big changes that has really helped this is I gotta give Jason kid credit the starting lineup change to put in Daniel Gafford and Derrick Jones Jr

And to bench Derrik Lively and Josh green and then Josh Green goes out with the injury but you look at those two different lineups and the the Luca Kyrie PJ Washington Josh Green Lively lineup played not a ton like a 100 possessions or so had 133 offensive rating insane

Like insane offense but their defense allowed 118 points per 100 possessions which is just not good defense that’s pretty bad defense since the change the Mavs line up with Luca Kyrie PJ Washington D uh Derrick Jones Jr and Daniel Gafford has 108 offensive rating which is still

Really good like you know be tops in the league and a 95.9 defensive rating which is elite elite for that and I think this new change of the starting lineup they got their first loss with this starting lineup last night in that that close game against the Warriors but that

Starting lineup change I think is one of the main reasons why they’ve really turned it around lately I totally agree and I like too that there was the willingness to look for a spark and to change something up um G A’s a guy who had has basically been starting um so I

Think he was really comfortable in that role and then you know with Lively and you kind of use the word bench di right and that has sounds a little negative but I don’t think that it was negative at all and and the beauty of that young kid is is he doesn’t take anything

Negatively right he just he uses everything as motivation and to get better and this is a great role and it was a great role for him uh I think because we’ve talked a number number of reasons about it but you know he wouldn’t get in foul trouble early on

He would come in more of a flow of the game whatever he was seeing on the court before he went in he’s such a smart guy he’s processing and then he goes in and he and he uses what Gafford used as um you know a game plan so I think his he’s

A rookie he’s a really young guy it made a lot of sense to have a veteran with so much size and all of you know that rebounding ability and shot blocking that Gafford brings that seems so smart to lean into that side of the defense

Same with Derk Jones Jr a guy um that you know the the length and and the bounciness that he brings I think was was great out defensively on the perimeter so yeah and I think they needed a spark in that moment they’d lost five of six and to to make a change

And for every body to accept it and to buy into it and be okay with it those were great that those were great things too I think a sign of the character of this team absolutely and I think with Gafford like the difference between Gafford and Lively if you say well why

Did they even need to do that wasn’t Lively doing a good job wasn’t he I think I think he was like I think he was doing he was doing a great job for a rookie right like a really great job been really impressed I spent most of the offseason saying all right well

They’ve got this rookie and a a rookie starting center had not made like a team with a rookie starting center had not made the playoffs since like Al Horford going back to when he was a rookie in I think it was Atlanta or whatever uh and then a team had not

Been like above 500 since Yao Ming going back to like starting a rookie Center like it just had not happened before and so for the Mavericks to have this kind of team success with the rookie Center starting as much as Lively did had been amazing Lively played really well but

With Gafford I think you can play with more Force you play with more uh there’s more strength around the rim he you know deters a lot of of shots and then he also the rebounding I think is just on a different level than what Lively is and

I think it’s not again it’s not a knock on lively it’s more like gafford’s just a really good rebounder really great hands can just you is really strong can finish around the rim and you can play with more force in that way and they’ve been playing this Advantage offense

Where all right what what advantage can we get we’ll we’ll go on that and we we don’t just do one thing anymore we’ll talk about that a little later with with offense but with Gafford he accentuates that I think a lot and then bringing Lively Off the Bench allows you to have

A similar kind of Advantage but just against you know backup guys and that has been really really good too yeah it just takes the pressure off just a little bit for someone who’s 20 years old right and and is your mind is spinning and your body has to be moving

As quick as the game is and it’s at a whole different level than where you were in college just one year ago so to to back that off just a little bit so we didn’t have like some early mistakes that per you know might get him off the

Court a little bit too quickly instead you just you just come in in a more comfortable confident place to play yeah absolutely and on lively as we’re recording this we don’t have an update on his injury Jason kid said he could be out two weeks I think he was just kind

Of speculating and as we all know I’m not a doctor so I don’t know that drop is we looked up that where that drop was from before the show and it’s uh it’s from right before the 2022 playoffs when Luca was going to be out for the first couple of

Games for uh in the playoffs let’s not even bring that back up though right we don’t even want to remember that happening but I I always want to remember Jason kid I’m not a doctor so I don’t know so funny to me uh but yeah this starting lineup change has

Been awesome and Daniel Gafford when he’s on the court the MAV defense is seven points per 100 possessions better that’s the that’s the most on the team it’s an insane difference I mean he’s just made such a big difference there um PJ Washington too being added to the

Starting lineup and ever since he brought in he’s second on the team Mavs are five points per 100 possessions better defensively both of those guys when they play together uh the the defensive ratings 106.8 like they just have completely changed this team around and like the starting lineup change kind

Of accentuates and kind of highlights that big change so I mean and we’re talking about you know nice work Jason kid and you have to just keep crediting Nico Harrison with this unbelievable midseason trade um that addressed the the you know the needs of the team and

Not only did you address those needs but then it immediately helped and you had enough time to imple implement you know things that you needed you needed to kind of have a training camp with those guys and work through things which fortunately they had just enough time to

Do having this happen at the trade deadline but it’s you just can’t say enough about this move being made and and how it has changed the entire complexion of this team and the potential of this season and a lineup change comes with guys getting bigger roles and also comes with guys

Talked about we talked about the starting lineup change and that was a huge thing and a huge reason why the Mavs turned it around with the lineup change though comes guys have to accept a smaller role and I think that’s another reason why the maps have turned

It around and been as good as they have you look at Derrick Lively we mentioned him before before the trades he was playing 26 minutes a game he started 35 of 36 games and the only time he didn’t start was that very first game against

The Spurs when he came off the bench and it was basically just a decision to not put as much pressure on him right away and then he played amazing that first game so he his role has gone down significantly I mean seven seven minutes a game less he’s playing and he’s only

Started seven of 19 games and and Gafford has now taken that role from him well I wonder too with the fact that he’s injured right now yeah that’s front of mind for me is this maybe the fourth injury that he’s dealt with in his rookie season and when you look at the

Chunks of games we’ve we’ve gotten you know 10 games and then and then he’s out for a few and then there was a nice stretch um where he maybe played you know 16 of 17 but then he had another injury so if he is working to build up

His NBA body right now and you know we’re noticing that there are things happening to a guy who’s who’s seven feet and built a little bit slight at the moment at his age you know maybe there’s some some also usefulness to the fact that you’re GNA play him a little

Less minutes you need this guy that we know that’s been proven uh and you don’t want to overdo it Gafford has a a little more meat on his bones he’s he’s been in the league longer he’s been a guy that’s proven to be really durable um when you

Look at you know through the years his injuries and things that he been deal dealing with or not I don’t know if if there’s anything to that this might just be a nice unintended consequence perhaps of you know playing Lively a little bit less minutes now they got to get him

Back um obviously but that could be something too and he’s the first to tell you I will do whatever this team wants yes I I’ll do the dirty work I’ll play less minutes whatever you ask of me that is who I am that’s what my role is and

And he’s he’s just really happy to you know to be a part of things yeah it’s kind of been a way to like skirt the rookie wall for him a little bit it’s like all right let’s take the pressure off of you it just came at a it came at

A really good time honestly for him to do all this and his injuries have been so weird like they they’ve been he gets undercut by by you know SCS in that one play gets whacked in the face and breaks his nose in three places like just been

Some just weird freak stuff on him um but yeah it is probably is better for him to play a little less the other player I think that has taken a lesser role but because the Mavericks it’s a very similar reason as what we just talked about with Lively is Dante exom

He had that stretch where before he got injured he was playing 31 minutes a game he was playing a big role Kyrie was out in that time remember that was back in December when he had all those you know 20o games and he was you know a huge

Part about what the Mavericks did since he’s been back he’s been playing 18.6 minutes a game and so he’s kind of taken a lesser role but I think it’s because of injuries and the Mavs kind of trying to save him a little bit because he’s proven to just be really important and

Honestly one reasons why the maps kind of turned around is they have that other ball handler and every time he steps on the court it’s like a spark um and and if that is something that you sort of bottle up and then it explodes when he’s

Out there for the the spurts of time that he’s there that is a really really nice thing for the Mavericks to have as an option I don’t think that he’s he’d be Overexposed in any way if he was playing more minutes but I do think because of the injury issues that he’s

Had historically and then what it felt like to lose him for a long extended period of time in the season they don’t want to take those chances um and so he may end up his minutes may go up in the playoffs we may see that and I love seeing him finish

Games um and you want to kind of work you know Pace it as a game goes so that he is out there and available at the end of games if that’s what you you know choose to do in those moments um so I it makes sense to me right now and and it’s

Probably hard those are you know guys that want to play more coach wants to play you more but you’re having to to like just be smart about it he’s got a non-guaranteed contract next year which we think the Mavs will pick up because it’s only like three million but still

Like this is a guy that’s trying to make his way back in the NBA and like stay back in the NBA and that’s a tough thing to swallow so for him to accept that role and to embrace it has been really good the other player that has taken a

Smaller role who whose role has been like jerked around so many times since he’s been with the Mavericks is Tim Hardway Jr if before the trades he was playing 30 minutes a game and since then he’s been playing 21 minutes a game and that role has gone way down and there

Are times when we just you know don’t even see him like in a second half sometimes uh and he’s accepted the role and I I think that you know say what you want about what he brings to the to the table what he doesn’t bring to the table

And all that I think he’s accepted the role and he’s not you know pouting or you know like taking a ton of taking a bunch of shots that he shouldn’t take you know because like ah I got to I got to get mine kind of thing it feels like

He’s playing along and he’s accepting like this new role and where is with the Mavericks and I think you do have to to credit him for that because the locker room is so good right and that’s and and it has been it’s such a good place where

Where guys are pulling for one another where they trust each other where they’re happy for each other that would stick out like a sore thumb in this locker room if if you’re over there pouting complaining I want more shots well everybody else is is happy to to to

Pull and do whatever they need to do to help so I think it’s it’s smart you you want to be a part of something good people are you know luuka is starting to describe this as special this team has something special going like you you

Want to be a part of it you know and yes if if it’s in a lesser role but you don’t want to be completely exed out of that role because you’re the cancer in the in the room right so um I I think that you know some everybody has to just

Like be really be smart about it enjoy where you’re at be glad you’ve got a good group of guys around you and that this is a positive you know season right now yeah uh you won’t go there but this he could have done what Christian Wood

Did last year right like and wanted his minutes and wanted his shots and chucked up a bunch of shots and called his own number a bunch and yeah Tim will Tim will do that he’s got a green light still to take shots but yeah I just think that him accepting the role has

Been different than you know some things that we’ve seen in the past and so players accepting the roles and accepting a smaller role has been a big reason why I think the Mavericks have have turned round because of what you just said the chemistry the chemistry on

This team is great and that’s what we saw in 2022 and now this Mavericks team is taking a similar Vibe into the you know this next you know into this next stage and into this next playoff run hopefully uh and honestly give give credit to Marie Morris for it with you

Know the the players only meeting that they had after all those losses and like he’s been a good vet and all that all that stuff like you got to give some of those guys the same reason we gave like Theo Pinson and bowan and guys like that

At the end of the bench credit like give marke credit for it I I totally agree with you and I also think I mean we can’t go any further without talking about what Kyrie Irving has done in that leadership role yeah um because I think he is you know Uber respected obviously

By feels like almost universally by players and teammates on the Mavericks really look up to him Luca is still so young and we forget that because he he is a generational Talent who plays like he’s been playing forever Kyrie is significantly older sorry Kyrie but he

Has a lot more years of of uh you know where guys are going to respect what he what they’re what he comes in and says and he comes in with a real calm demeanor you know and he tells everybody we’re fine relax it’s okay he he was one

That Tim Hardaway Jr um was really using as somebody to get through that tough shooting stret um you know Kyrie told him you’re fine just keep shooting we’ve been in this league forever you’re going to be fine the shots are going to fall and when you

Hear Kyrie tell you that um there’s no Panic in it you know he’s I think that that’s been one of the biggest reasons this team has did not lose faith when um they lost five of six at a bad time of year and everybody’s starting to look at

Each other and it’s real it could be easy to start pointing fingers when you’re looking at each other instead it was like Kumbaya arms around each other and I think a lot of that had to do with the way Kyrie kind of went in and set

The tone yeah well you had that quote from Daniel Gafford was like when something bad happens on defense everyone starts pointing fingers like they were doing that and then they they changed it around and like that turnaround has been absolutely massive coming up Kyrie Irving has done

Couple things but there’s one specific thing that’s very obvious the reason why the Mavericks have turned it around he’s played 26 straight games yes do you want to take a guess on when the last time Kyrie Irving played 26 straight games ah

I mean do we H how far do we have to go back 2018 2016 the 2015 16 Season wow he played 21 straight games in the playoffs and he played 42 straight games during that regular season do you remember what happened in 2016 he hit the shot and they won the

Finals That season uh but 42 straight games in the regular season he has not played more than he the last time he played 20 straight games in a regular season was the 2016 17 season so right after that he played 22 straight games to start the season but he has not

Played this many straight games in uh what like eight years it’s been it’s been a really long time and his health has really helped the Mavericks turn it around it makes you just say wow if if he had been able to play all season long

I know um you know and and you could say that about a lot of things obviously but it’s it’s it’s really like sped up his relationship with Luca right I mean now they they’ve got this incredible working Rel relationship on the court and and what appears to be really really good

One off the court too but they needed to have all of that time together they needed to have consecutive games finally playing and you know what else I think to the point of the regular starting lineup and consistency with lineups and rotations that made has made a huge difference um everybody knows you’re

You’re more comfortable with who’s on the court with you you know and when Kyrie’s on the court everybody’s comfortable he is a guy that you know just is a calming effect and he’s a ridiculous Talent he’s so much fun to watch and if you got him healthy and you

Can have him late in games to help you win big games I mean it it’s a huge huge difference obviously health is everything with him the other thing that he’s done that he hasn’t done ever ever in his career he has six dunks this season he got one the other night

Against the Warriors six dunks he has not had more than four dunks in any season in the NBA he hasn’t had four dunks in a season since 2015 that was the last time I mean he has like turned back the clocks and maybe it’s just because of the Mavs you know Advantage offense

They’re just trying to find Advantage somewhere and he’s found these you know Cuts back door and things like that and Luca will find him but man it’s uh it’s insane that he has more dunks this season than ever in his career it is I saw him described as Benjamin Benjamin

Button in an article you know and he is he’s like aging backwards but he’s also a guy that takes insane care of himself you know has a very regimented diet um doesn’t drink during the season is constantly um you know working you know straight to the training room whatever

It is that he needs all of the things that he does to take care of himself and and it doesn’t feel all that surprising you know honestly when the stuff that he does and just the the incredibly competitive side of him you know he recently said like i’ said at eight

Years old I wanted to be the greatest ever and whatever it was going to take to do that I was going to do he is willing to sacrifice he is willing to put in all the extra time um so I don’t know it’s fun it’s fun to see him doing

It and I’m I’m not surprised two more couple more stats that I have here that reasons why the Mavs turned it around um we talked about the defense how the defense has been so different their field goal percentage the only thing that’s really changed the Mavs are allowing the same type of shots

Like the same percentage of shots like where the shots are coming from has been pretty much the same the one big difference between before the trades defense and after the trades defense is before the trades the Mavs were allowing 70% at The Rim so if you got to the rim

Seven times out of 10 you’re going to hit the shot there that was 28th in the NBA awful they you know just a Turn Style once you get to the rim since the trades 62.6% which doesn’t sound that great but that’s third in the NBA they are they

Have the rim has been put on lockdown now with Gafford and Lively and the Mavs perimeter defense being better and that has been such a big change uh when you shut down the rim and shut down some of the easy stuff it makes everything else harder and I think that that’s one big

Change too that has helped this Mavericks team turn it around oh just it’s massive it’s absolutely massive because I felt like when you watched and and teams scoring at The Rim at will so easily was so deflating um you know because it it tells you there is no nothing we can do

Offensively to to out score that like how we we’ve got to score 140 a game you know because it so easily they were scoring 125 130 or whatever it was I think they allowed 129 points a game during that six game stretch where they lost five I believe it five of the six

And it’s just like it’s so frustrating and you think great my my offense is supposed to be my defense well forget it it’s like too much to ask and to just have to to step that back enough to know um that teams are going to it’s going to be more difficult on

Them just it was it’s dramatically it’s a huge shift in the way you play the way you think about the way games are going to go um it’s it’s it really is it’s it’s massive rebounding matters I don’t know if you’ve heard this on this podcast before and heard maybe the the

Alternative on this podcast before uh shout out to Isaac defensive rebound percentage just like the percentage of defensive rebounds your team gets before the trades the maps are getting 69% that was not nice 27th in in the NBA they were 27th the NBA in defensive rebound percentage after the trades 73% they’re

Ninth in the NBA that change in defense of rebounding as well so they’re allowing less less you know shots to be made at the rim and they’re getting defensive rebounds and closing possessions that defense has completely changed completely on that and the the last set I want to bring is the Mavs

Aren’t on offense aren’t relying on the three as much anymore when the Mavs shoot under 32% before the trades when they shoot under 32% from three before the trades they were one and eight since the trades they’re six and one when they shoot under 32% from three theyve just

Completely changed that all right we we’re not a one trick pony on offense anymore and it’s such a relief to for them to know that and to be able to um choose a different identity in a game if it is is n working because we in the

Golden State game for example like if drik Jones Jr is not going to hit a shot you know um there’re there are games where where other guys are not going to to help with that you know you’re gonna be counting on Luca and counting on Kyrie and the three is going to

Disappear I mean you want it to be there consistently it’s amazing when they’re hitting 22 threes and you beat the Kings uh because everything is perfect right but uh there are going to be games where guys just are shots are just not falling um and you may have role players who are

It’s a it’s a bonus when we get it right but you cannot rely on it and I think that is is you know just makes you feel so much better about their chances to make a run in the playoffs when it isn’t live or die by the three because you

Know how easily it is to take away that good teams know how to strategize and take away things from you and um I just think for them to have the belief that they have uh balanced in not only their roster but the way they play is is really really good absolutely so those
