At 36-37, the Mavericks fighting for their playoff lives against an undermanned 24-50 charlotte team. This was the first of a 2 game mini series against charlotte. PJ Washington goes for 28 and the Hornets upset the Mavs 117-109.

2 days later charlotte wins again 110-104 and pushes Dallas to 36-39 and 11th place in the west holding few tie breakers over teams ahead of them.
From here the mavs end the season 2-5 and finish with a tank fest against the Spurs to secure a 10th position lottery chance.
The balls bounce the right way and mavs end at 10 (otherwise pick conveys to knicks) and get Derrick Lively.
From there, we eventually get PJ from the Hornets in 2024. The man who began the end of the season in 2023.
Ultimately, we owe a lot of thanks to PJ for beating us and helping us get Lively.

PJ “trust the process” Washington
I remember around that time, there was a point we had the same record as the year before, and being super bummed out about because injuries were really killing us for like a month and thinking we would be a play in team at best. Best D- trade
Interesting point about losing to Charlotte twice in 2023 and eventually trading for PJ. Reminds me of how NFL teams typically pick up free agents from other teams in their same division, I think in large part to playing against them so often and remembering when they have really good games.
