Moment Golden State Warrior Dynasty Started Including Who’s Responsible for Drafting Splash Brothers
you know we’re dead in the off season right now if you go hit the rewind button a year ago to when the Warriors got eliminated in the conference semifinals by the LA Lakers their off season started pretty much now so as a content creator we got to get creative sometimes here in terms of topics and I’ve heard fans supporters of this program members of dub Nation talk about wanting some positivity on this show wanting some Nostalgia for the good old days so let’s do it let’s talk about the dawn of the dynasty I’m also bringing another fan on the show for the final segment stay tuned for that this is lockon Warriors you are locked on Warriors your daily Golden State Warriors podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day [Music] thank you for making locked on Warriors you for joining us as always and uh for today’s show again I want to hit the rewind button I want to take a step back to when this Golden State Warriors Dynasty began in fact uh you know I’ve been a writer for a very long time I actually have a published book this was published back in 2011 it’s all about surfing so nothing to do with the Warriors um but regardless I’ve been a writer for over 20 years I’m going to get back into that scene uh why not and and I’ve got a a potential offer lined up where I’m going to be uh writing some some regular content pertaining to the Golden State Warrior so stay tuned for that but and I’ve haven’t been writing consistently in years but back when I was one of the stories I published was about the dawn of the Golden State Warriors Dynasty when did it actually begin right like is there a specific moment you can pinpoint that specifies where it all started and I always like to think back to this particular moment this was back in I believe 2000 oh boy now I lost the year for uh when this was I believe it was 2009 no no no I apologize I got the date right here March 19th 2012 the occasion was a jersey retirement of Warriors Legend Chris Mullen I hope to get Mullen on this show sometime I interviewed him a couple years back with Rick Barry I love the dude I grew up watching a play for the warriors uh one of the greatest shooters ever I really believe that talk about someone who overachieved um he his he had physical limitations in terms of athleticism right he he wasn’t a monster dunker he wasn’t a high flying athlete uh defensively you know he he he maybe didn’t measure up when it comes to lateral quickness but he’s a Hall of Famer he was a dream teamer and he absolutely deserved having his jersey retired and this moment was March 19th 2012 and it became a rather contentious and rockus Affair this was supposed to be a celebration of Warriors Legend Chris mullen’s playing career but the Jersey retirement was I believe it was during halftime of a Warriors game and Joe lob was the relatively new owner of the team this was soon after the Warriors had traded Monte Ellis who was popular in in local Parts in the baraya um and it’s incredible to me that the the Stephen Curry Monte Ellis experiment lasted as long as it did everyone knew Monte Ellis included the moment they drafted Stephen Curry that that back cord was not going to work too small apparently that went over Steve curr’s head this past season when he was routinely playing Stephen Curry and Chris Paul out there but I digress so Joe lob made the trade get Andrew bogot and a lot of people weren’t happy about that and and it’s very easy if you’re not older if you’re not a historian of basketball it’s very easy to forget just how tortured dub nation was as a fan base the warriors were horrible for nearly 40 years they had little moments here and there but they were the butt of jokes they were the absolute laughing stock of the NBA as a franchise so let’s play this this moment this jersey retirement because Joe lob took the took the microphone I still don’t understand why he took the mic and I think that was part of the reason why people were upset it’s like why are you making this about you um regardless Rick Barry was there he took the mic near the end to calm the crowd down to remind them that the team has a new owner that that Joe lob was not Chris Cohan an awful owner by the way Chris Cohan once invited me to sit in his owner Suite uh during my radio days myself and a couple other colleagues were invited it was a total PR move on his part so that we could talk you know kindly about him on the show um interesting character it was it was you know to spend an evening with Chris Cohan the owner of the Warriors um I wish there were interesting stories to share about it but uh he was a rather dull dude um and he was also an awful owner uh the Warriors rarely achieved success under his tenure ship so Joe lob takes over and again this was a jaded fan base and let’s hear what the crowd had to say or how they reacted when Joe lob took the mic again this was part of Chris mullen’s Jersey retirement celebration and it didn’t go exactly as planned cere I think we have to do tonight he saved the best for last let’s bring up the owner and and real fast here that’s Greg Papa he was the longtime voice the Golden State Warriors before Bob Fitzgerald took over uh so in case that voice sounds familiar that’s who that was that’s Greg Papa uh let’s continue the Golden State Warriors Mr Joe again lot of booze right they barely knew him at this point a lot of the booze were coming again because of the Mont Alis trade for Andrew bogot which in hindsight clearly was the right move bogot was a pivotal part of that 2015 championship team he was the first real Center legitimate Center Boga himself a former number one pick that the Warriors had um but again a lot of people in the fan base loved Monte Ellis a lot of people were just jaded about any decision that the Warriors made Joe looks exactly the same by the way kudos to him are almost the same anyways uh I won’t interrupt this often I just want to add some context as we go along let’s resume the party tonight now that we got that over with tonight is about two things embracing history and respect the Warriors ownership the current Warriors our our owners I think it’s very important to embrace history something has been done in the past perhaps as well and when you speak of Warriors history there’s no one [Music] and so if you’re listening to this on the podcast again Joe lob’s getting a lot of booze so Chris Mullen steps up and takes the mic trying to defend lob from what was this was very it was very unfair what the fan base was doing but again nearly 40 Years of just abysmal content and when I say content I mean Warriors basketball as the greatest fans in the NBA as everyone stated sometimes change is inevitable and it’s going to work out just fine with your support and patience and use that passion in the right direction this thing is going the right way I’ve got great comson Joe Mark Jackson and everything will work out just fine just a little bit of patience use that passion thanks [Applause] okay hey one second here come on people all right and so that voice you’re hearing now if you’re listening to the podcast if you’re watching on YouTube You’re Going to see me in just a second that is my friend regular guests on this show Rick Barry the Hall of Famer one of the greatest to ever lace it up and dribble a basketball his jersey hangs proudly in the rafters of Chase Center alongside Chris Mullen and a few others so Rick Barry decided to jump in out at this point and keep in mind both Mullen and Rick were right important to note that you fans are the greatest fans in the worldbody said that show a little bit of class this is a man that I’ve spent some time talking to he is going to change this franchise this is crazy seriously come on you’re doing yourself a disservice all of the wonderful accolades being said to you for you to treat this man who is spending his money to do the best that he can to turn this franchise around and I know he’s GNA do it so give him the respect he deserves and there you go and that was Rick and uh you know and I really hope to this day uh Joe lob uh acknowledges that how how strongly Rick advocated for him um because he turned that crowd around and look they were right everything changed happy ending to the story Joe lob safely we can say now one of the greatest owners in the history of Bay Area uh sports franchise history or whatever trying to say there uh yeah so so that was that to me that moment in my humble opinion is where you can pinpoint the dawn of the Golden State Warriors Dynasty when we come back I want to quickly highlight just just give some some props and credit words to pertaining to who is responsible for drafting the core three of the Golden State Warriors Dynasty Stephen Curry Klay Thompson Draymond Green Let’s give them their due and maybe equally as important let’s give the person who drafted them his due I’ll explain what I mean in just a moment after we give some love to our sponsors for this warm day at least here in the Bay Area I don’t know how things are looking in your part of the country oh one last thing or world one last thing I want to add by the way about that video clip before we move on and this is evidence of why unlike a lot of other fan bases and a lot of other sports organizations why I personally cringe a little when I hear the term bandwagon associated with the Golden State Warriors that Arena through thick and thin through highs and lows mostly lows mostly depressing mostly just utterly deplorable in terms of of the product that was being placed out there as a basketball team despite all the misery all the torture that Arena sold out night after night when I was a kid growing up in the Bay Area born and raised here the warriors were an awful team they had their moments the Sleepy Floyd game where he set the record for most points most postseason points in a quarter and half a record that still holds to this day sleepy fory by the way was a guest on the show a year or so ago um highly recommend going back and and watching that interview or listening to it if you haven’t uh again little moments like that existed but those little moments were surrounded by just p dread misery and that Arena still sold out night after night the Bay Area is a basketball region we love our hoops and this area loves the Golden State Warriors through thick and thin so I just wanted to add that as well that despite the fact that they were awful for a large number of years that arena is still sold out and so the fan base definitely deserves their due just for that all right we’ll have a lot more in just a moment after we give some love to our sponsors for this very warm afternoon and first up on the [Music] agenda is the official sports book of the locked on podcast Network FanDuel it’s winner take all time in the NBA and NHL and fanduels giving you a shot to bring on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app part of the locked on podcast Network your Team every day I want to quickly give uh the man responsible for Stephen Curry for Klay Thompson for Draymond Green his due if you’re a longtime Warriors fan when I say long time let’s date back 10 years to to the first Warriors title 20145 you all remember Riley Stephen Curry’s daughter she’s adorable and she’s grown up into an adult which is crazy watching those children’s grow up right before her eyes so she’s not as little as she was but she clearly won over a lot of the Nations certainly won over the vast majority of dub Nation cute kid and uh and Steph had her alongside alongside him oftentimes in postgame press conferences you know she’s holding Daddy’s Hand a lot of times coming to the games she won all of her Hearts Riley was named after Larry Riley who was the former Warriors GM respons ible for drafting Stephen Curry Stephen Curry was the seventh pick in the 2009 NBA draft and to revisit that draft real fast Blake Griffin was the number one pick Hashem the beat was the number two pick of the Grizzlies he never panned out had the size but the skill set did not follow the number three pick in that year’s draft James Harden the number that was worthwhile the OKC Thunder drafted him number four was Tyreek Evans we haven’t seen in the NBA in a few years a former Bob Meers client the Warriors toyed with the idea of adding him to the team uh two years ago um I believe he’s still out of the NBA fifth pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves was Ricky Rubio not a lot of people were hating on Minnesota for that pick a lot of people were hating on Minnesota and their then GM David Khan for the sixth pick Minnesota had the fifth and sixth picks in the draft with number six they went with Johnny Flynn I don’t know what the hell happened to Johnny Flynn I don’t know what he did at Syracuse that impressed David Khan so much but the Minnesota Timberwolves drafted Johnny Flynn number six and it led the way for the Golden State Warriors to draft Stephen Curry number seven and the man responsible for that was Larry Riley Larry Riley was the GM of the Warriors and Joe lob and Peter goober inherited him right so as with a lot of new owners a lot of new leadership they like to bring their own people in Bob Myers was one of the early hires of the Joe Lake era he was originally hired he was a former player G uh former player agent I’m sorry played college basketball at U at UCLA Joe Lake hires him in hindsight the level Ingenuity there was impressive because player agents were not known for being making these career transitions into the front offices of the NBA uh so Bob Meyers though was hired as an assistant GM with even though I don’t know if it was official but the the impression was clear that he was going to take over for Larry Riley now my good friend Larry Krueger who hosts the Krug show he comes on the show regularly he maintains and there’s no evidence to support this except for anecdotal that maybe based off what he’s heard himself and next time he comes on the show I’ll bring it up with him again Larry Krueger will maintain that Don Nelson was the man respons responsible for drafting Stephen Curry and was responsible for Klay Thompson Larry Riley was the GM when clay was drafted fast forward two years in 2011 clay declared for the NBA draft after his junior year at Washington state by that point Larry Riley already had Bob Meers as his assistant GM this was the final draft under the Larry Riley uh a tenure and he nailed it again he got Klay Thompson we know how the birth of the Splash Brothers and then one year later the Warriors had another incredible Draft when they had Harrison Barnes and this was Bob Meers first year as the GM they drafted Harrison Barnes Festa cili and then in the second round at number 35 Draymond Green so Larry Riley was largely responsible entirely for the Stephen Curry Klay Thompson drafts and then his successor Bob Meyers drafts Draymond Green in 2012 and the rest is history I’ve showed you the clip that I just played a moment ago of the interesting night at Oracle Arena when Joe lob was initially Jered then he was cheered and the dynasty was born so I hope you had fun taking a trip down memory lane and now let’s bring one of the fans of this program on the show let’s do that next after we give some love to our other sponsor for this very warm [Music] afternoon that is prize picks let’s get that overlay launched there we go for the YouTube viewers get in on the playoff action we’re now in the Conference Finals and you could win up to a 100 times your money on prize picks one of my favorite apps it’s legal in California I can’t emphasize that enough it’s all about daily Fantasy Made Easy you’re betting on individual performances I’m sure uh and I haven’t looked at at prize picks today but for tonight’s Mavericks oh no no no I’m sorry tonight is the Celtics and the Pacers so the premise of prize picks is simple Tyrese halberton is he gonna score more less than say 21 and a half points Jason Tatum is he gonna score more less than let’s say 27 and a half points I haven’t looked at Price pick so don’t quote me on those lines how many boards is Al Horford going to grab is it going to be more or less than five and a half that’s the premise of prize picks Pascal seum is going to grab seven and a half boards is going to be more or less than that’s how you play the game it’s that simple when the Warriors are involved I really thrive on this app uh this time of year it’s it’s still tremendously fun gambling I still play and now you can win up to a hundred times your money on prize picks with as little as four correct picks you can turn $10 into ,000 with basketball hockey and so much more on prize picks America’s number one fantasy sports app download that incredible app today and use the code locked on NBA for a first part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day thank you for making locked on Warriors your first listen every day for the every dayers we’re going to be rolling all summer and one of the things I’m going to be doing I’m going to try to do is bring folks who actually support this program um on the show man I want to I want to give you folks the opportunity to take the mic offer you perspectives maybe convince me otherwise on something I’ve said whatever you want to share the floor is yours and we have prik raal on the program today prik the moment I turned the camera on and saw your face again I recognized we bumped into each other last year uh at a Warriors store inside Chase Arena during which as you pointed out the Warriors Grizzlies game um that we both went to great to see you again and how are you doing and what are your initial thoughts on the Warriors offseason so far if anything it’s great to see you Cyrus thanks for having me I I really appreciate the opportunity um offseason’s been pretty quiet I think um probably just waiting for the playoffs to end before some serious stuff goes down but I’m very excited for the prospects I do think we’re like a move or two away from being right back in contention which is a great spot to be in um so I’m very excited for what the Warriors have in store yeah maybe like asking what you think about the offseason is a wrong question because you’re right nothing’s happened so far um Let Me Maybe the better question is this what were your thoughts on the season that just finished I you know the Warriors won 46 games you hear Steve K spinning it as you know like you 46 wins will get you from the playoffs in a lot of instances I mean come on man that’s you know 46 wins will also not get you in there’s a lot of examples of that um third third time in five years they’re a lottery team uh some say they underperformed you know I’m sure there’s positives to take away what were your thoughts on this past year I think you always have to look at relative performance to the people around you so saying that 46 wins would have gotten us into the playoffs last year or two years ago means nothing like um a lot of times especially when I’m looking at statistics I like looking at the plus statistics which are averaged over the year um so I think the Warriors definitely have some room to improve I think Steve Kerr has some room to improve I’m really curious to see how he handles USA Basketball because I think I think this past season there was a lot of politics there was a lot of clay um last season maybe his last season as a warrior um so that was probably clouting his judgment along with the Draymond stuff so there was a lot of non-basketball stuff that happened so I’m very curious to see in this kind of um new USA group how he treats them and what I’ve heard about how he’s treating Anthony Edwards and you know maybe he’s not considering playing a center at all U you know I’m very curious to see what happens same and and I think the last what happened with international basketball last year was telling Steve Curry was his first time running that ship he he once again you know reverted to small ball which he seems to be most comfortable with and a bit Team USA in the ass man they didn’t win gold um so I’m fascinated because this USA roster I don’t know about you it’s so damn good it is one of the greatest teams ever assembled I think it even Rivals the dream team of 92 I really do um so I’m I’m with you man I think this is a huge test for Steve Kerr because if Team USA does not win gold that is such a disappointment man and so what were your thoughts by the way I don’t know if you saw the episode if you saw the clip uh where Steve Kerr for the first time that I’ve ever heard sort of started admitting that the end is possibly near he actually was talking about the Finish Line I’ve never heard language from that from him before um you know he said he brought up I think two years what are your thoughts on that do you think he he was sincere in saying it might be over um do you think he’s full of you know what like what were your thoughts on that if you if you had a chance to listen to it I think he’s full of you know what I I’m very worried that he’s too comfortable in his current job um and that he’s so confident not in his skills but in his relationships with people um that it may be clouding his judgment a little bit although he fully has the next two years to prove us wrong so um I really hope that you know I always hope for the best for the Warriors so I really hope that he can you know put those aside and look at it objectively maybe bring in some new blood and get rid of some people to make it a lot easier I’m gonna ask you about Klay Thompson in a moment but when when you talk about New Blood and this is where I’d love to get your perspective and anyone else’s perspective I’m going to really get into the research once the NBA finals are over but is there anyone out there right now are there is there a name or or a bunch of names that stick out to you either as free agents or trade targets have you thought that far ahead I love your idea of getting Giannis I think it’s extremely possible it all depends on how much he values Milwaukee as a organization um but he’s we we need we need an answer to Nia yic I know he’s been eliminated from the playoffs but that caliber type of player seven-footer that can do basically everything a lot of teams have people like that there’s chat now W’s coming so we need we need someone like that to have an answer for those kind of teams and we currently don’t have an answer cavon Looney is not an answer Trace Jackson Davis I feel like he would be a really good backup center a really high quality backup center kind of like the Derek Lively um Daniel gaff Duo but we need we need a little more Firepower on the front line so Giannis is one of the few names that I think fits that mold I I think Daniel grafford would have been awesome for the Warriors I was very shocked when he went to um Dallas for not much U yeah you’re right does it drive you crazy when you see traits like that and you think to yourself the Warriors could have done something like that and and and the Mavericks by the way I don’t know if you saw yesterday’s show but I brought this up the Mavericks proved m seon trades can work uh we’ve heard this this narrative from I think Kerr has brought this up a few others that oh no you know mid-season trades never work it’s going to disrupt team chemistry bull you know what man like Talent wins out um and the Mavericks are proof of that with both Gafford and PJ Washington I’m totally with you dude I think the Warriors need someone to pair up uh with Trace Jackson Davis because it’s not just Denver right it’s not just Nicola yic you got to worry about man it’s also Nas Reed it’s also Carl Anthony towns and yeah man I already to interrupted you but I just wanted to add that as no you’re right it’s it’s the new age of the NBA before it was the guard and there was a period where it was all guards there were five guards on the court all the time and now the ties are changing and you either change with it or you get left behind absolutely man and and I’m with you on the um on the uh Giannis an Koo dreaming I’m looking at the roster for the bucks right now just to give you an idea of of why I think it would be asine for Yannis to want to stay in Milwaukee I understand being loyal but dude life is short you you’re such a and I’m speaking out to Giannis like you’re such a special player he’s such a special player that he has the talent and potential to win multiple championships that’s never happening if he saves Milwaukee you’ve got Brook Lopez turning he’s already 36 years old he turns 37 next year Chris Middleton’s GNA be 33 uh Pat conaton Jay Crowder I mean I like Bobby poris but I mean he’s not a a GameChanger AJ Green uh I know denil G galinari is approaching his late 30s and he’s going to be a restricted free agent any or an unrestricted free agent anyways the point is I’m looking at this roster uh Maron Bo champ who’s young unproven I don’t think he’s going to be a Difference Maker next year that roster is thin dude and Damen Lillard I think he turns 35 next year he was not happy there last year we haven’t even heard from him whether or not he wants to stay or or move on to a place where at least he can uh enjoy his bachelorhood with some fun and not being freezing in Milwaukee so point is Giannis get the hell out of there man there’s no future for you in Milwaukee the Warriors are ready to to trade the the house for you um what were your thoughts on Klay Thompson man I know he’s gonna be a free agent a lot of Warriors fans have thoughts about him what are your thoughts man like floor’s yours I think it’s time I I really think it’s time for Klay Thompson to to take a hard look at himself and his future as a player and maybe his future as not a player um I always I like I like looking at the game within the game much like Draymond um so I I I follow a lot of baseball and there’s a huge difference between Buster Posey who retired a giant um and Brandon Crawford who is now on this on the St Louis Cardinals they were like 1 a1b for a long time in Giants Legend in Giants lore but there’s there’s just a sour taste with Brandon Crawford now and there’s this Allure of Buster posie um I think clay has a has has an OP option to to have that kind of a lure he’s made his money I don’t think this is going to be about money for him um The Warriors gave him money when he was hurt um so there’s definitely I don’t think it’s G to be like oh this team’s offering me more so I’m gonna take it it’s it’s um it’s just going to be a question of how much are the Warriors going to actually utilize him and is that worth not getting paid that much for absolutely man yeah so you know Clay if if I was Clay um buy buy a bigger boat enjoy sailing around for a while maybe come back as a assistant coach as as a Player Development Scout as an OG every team has a really good OG every every championship team has a really good OG um cheering on the young guys and if you know Steph always says that he doesn’t see himself not retiring or not playing without Klay Thompson maybe that doesn’t necessarily mean Klay has to be a player maybe clay just needs to be around good point to to Mentor the youth to keep Steph and Draymond accountable um those are my those are my kind of salty opinions about clay I don’t think it’s salty at all man I think you’re being realistic and I love it prik it was so good to see you again man I was pleasantly surprised when I again when when you uh when I turned on your camera and I was like whoa I know that face um so really stoked that that I saw you again um and when you brought up the Giants metaphor uh I I always think back to those Barry Bonds years the final years and I I just don’t want that level of treatment only replace Barry with Steph like that that is my nightmare like do not have Steph’s final Year’s a marketing ploy to sell tickets with with no chance of winning like please don’t let that happen PR people can follow you on Twitter at R awor PR P th K I got a run man great thank you so much for coming on brother thank you and thanks to everyone thanks for having me of course brother and we’ll be back at this soon B bye
