the gym thank you for being an everyday now I want to preface this by saying we did talk about the Donan Mitchell rumors a little bit last week kind of in passing because ESPN’s Brian windhorse mentioned three teams that he thought would be the top suitors for Donovan Mitchell he said the Lakers the Heat and the Nets would be in the running and at the very end of that segment that he did on TV he also was like oh and also Houston like he really quickly hey Houston might be in the running too and now this week the Athletics Kelly e reported the Rockets are currently still monitoring the or they’re one of the teams monitoring the Donovan Mitchell situation in Cleveland now it’s worth noting here and I should have included this last week when we were talking about the Mitchell stuff but I the Rockets have had interest in Mitchell for a while like they’ve been monitoring the situation going all the way back to like last summer I remember conversations taking place in like July 2023 about Donovan Mitchell and like exploring potential trade talks with the Cavaliers um now how serious those conversations ever be became uh whether it was just kind of you know again similar situation them monitoring things seeing you know what could potentially happen cuz whenever a a top 20 top 15 player has the possibility of shaking loose you’re going to do your due diligence and you’re going to kind of Kick the tires and see what’s up so that’s why we’re talking about it on today’s show because I do think there are legitimate arguments on both sides of the aisle because there are some Rockets fans who who would love to get their hands on Donovan Mitchell and there’s others who are like vehemently opposed to to it and if I had to say from the jump I’m probably more so in the camp of opposed to trading for Donovan Mitchell but we’re going to navigate Today’s Show and kind of uh see if we can’t talk ourselves into it maybe you know throughout these first couple segments and then uh later on in the show I want to talk about Malik Beasley uh being reported as one of the potential free agent names for the Rockets to consider this off season so a lot to get to in today’s show let’s start with some of the pros and cons for trading for Donovan Mitchell uh I think just in a like in a vacuum Donovan Mitchell would be a massive upgrade for this Rockets roster I think in any trade scenario you’re talking about with Donovan Mitchell you’d be having to give up more than likely Jaylen green would be like the centerpiece of a Donan Mitchell trade but you could also maybe see permutations of the trade that involve cam Whitmore as the headliner as the headlining like Blue Chip Prospect going back to Cleveland or even possibly amen Thompson um I would not include cam or Amin or any of the you know core six in a trade like this and and again we’re going to have to at least for the sake of the discussion use jayen as the trade bait uh for Donovan Mitchell so we’ll operate under that assumption but if you’re just telling me that you could take this exact Rockets team and run it back and basically swap out Jaylen green for Donovan Mitchell then yeah like that’s a really enticing Prospect if you’re a Rockets fan right that team I think is probably a guaranteed top six team in the Western Conference arguably a top four team in the Western Conference because a lot of their shortcomings this past season occurred when nobody could step up to score the ball when team started double and triple teaming Alper and shenon Fred vanet had games where he could deliver and Jaylen green had some games where he was able to deliver at a high level but there were also a lot of games where nobody could step up to the plate and nobody could score the ball the Rockets were a great defense this past season they really struggled offensively so bringing in a dynamic lead guard like Don Mitchell who has the scoring prowess that he does the secondary playmaking ability that he does his ability just as an overall lead guard like that’s a no-brainer it makes a ton of sense um he’s also like age-wise he’s not that far ahead of the RO the rest of the Rockets young core like Donovan Mitchell’s only 27 years old so there’s a lot to like about his potential long-term fit in Houston alongside the remaining members of the Rockets core 6 right if you if you did trade Jaylen green how he fits alongside potentially Like A Min Thompson as the future backcourt of the Rockets or next to cam Whitmore or whatever maybe you know once Fred Van vet’s contract expires if the Rockets do not want to have him in Houston long term then maybe your backourt you know eventually Donan Mitchell takes over and it’s one of Cam men sharing the backourt minutes with him in the starting lineup there’s a lot of possibilities there the downsides to a Don of Mitchell trade are a lot there’s there’s a lot of downsides um first off I do think injuries are a bit of a concern with Mitchell um he hasn’t played more than 70 games since his sophomore season uh you go back and look at the last few years last season he played 55 games the year before that 68 67 53 69 not nice because of the injury but um I do think that you know for a guy that is supposed to be a number one option you know your tier one guy or whatever if you’re going to trade a bunch of assets for you know a guy that’s basically you can pencil in to miss anywhere from 10 to 25 games a year every year that’s a lot of games to miss every single season and we saw the Cavs kind of struggle when Donovan Mitchell left the lineup right it’s tough to rely on a guy in that role on your team and then to miss him for a quarter of the Season every year that’s that’s a lot to deal with on top of that and this is kind of the biggest question mark with Donovan Mitchell it’s one of the reasons the Cavaliers are looking to even trade him the the way they are right now after giving up so much for him in the first place to the Utah Jazz is he’s he’s got two years left on his deal the final year is a player option so he’s under the contract for this next season and that’s it he hasn’t been able to figure out a contract extension with the Cavaliers in in part because financially it makes makes more sense for Mitchell to hit restri or hit unrestricted free agency and sign a brand new contract than it does for him to sign a contract extension because he can make more money by becoming an unrestricted free agent and signing a brand new deal so it doesn’t make Financial sense for him to sign an extension regardless of if he wants to be in Cleveland or not but that is one of the concerns is whatever team potentially trades for Donovan Mitchell whether it’s the Rockets or someone else they’re going to have to trade for him and they’re going to have to operate on his word that he’s willing to resign in whatever location he goes to now there’s a reason that the Nets feel confident right that he you know wants to play in New York that kind of thing um La would be another one where like you know it’s the LA market like you’re playing next to LeBron and AD like maybe that’s a situation where he’s just like yeah sure I’ll resign like cool uh but if you’re the rockets and if you’re kind of trying to get involved as like a Darkhorse candidate to land Don Mitchell do you really want to mortgage you know Jaylen green future and his upside his potential as well as however much draft Capital it would take to make the deal go through for what might ultimately wind up being a one-year rental of Donovan Mitchell because he can bolt next summer that’s the crazy thing is unless you are unless you are absolutely certain that he is going to sign a brand new contract summer 2025 or that you could get him to sign a contract extension which if he’s not going to sign one with Cleveland why would he sign one anywhere else um it just doesn’t like that that’s kind of the scary part is how much would you TR would you be willing to trade how risk averse are you to making that deal what would a deal look like that’s kind of one of the important parts here is how much the Rockets should be pursuing a Donan Mitchell trade uh one more point in the kind of pros and cons column as we’re stacking up the cons here is I do think Don Mitchell’s had some disappointing postseason performances I’m not going to say he’s a choke artist in the postseason or anything but he has had some games and some moments in the postseason that have been less than stellar and I do think it’s really tough because when you’re one of those guys that’s that you know is talented enough to be even in the discussion as like a top 25 top 20 top 15 even player in the NBA but you’re not quite good enough to be the number one option on a contender that’s a really precarious place to be as a player right like case in point here I’ll draw an example Damen Lillard absolutely phenomenal player right NBA top 75 alltime list all all that good stuff but he was the number one option for the Blazers for years and all they had to show for it was an Eastern Conference or sorry a Western Conference Finals showing where they got swept by The Warriors like but Dame as a sec like so that was what the Blazers got trying to build a team around Dame who was really really good but maybe just not quite good enough to be the first option on a legit Championship Contender I kind of feel like Donovan Mitchell is in that same boat is he good enough to be the number one guy on a legit Championship Contender um I don’t see it personally I think that he has some inconsistencies in this game he’s had some disappointing playoff performances but could he be a really really good number two guy or a really really good kind of like you know 1A option to like bridge the gap as like shingon and the rest of the Rockets young core kind of grow and develop and get better possibly so that’s why we’re discussing this um now I will say that for the Cavaliers because whenever we do these hypothetical trade rumors discussions whatever I try to put myself in the other team’s shoes and I do think the Cavaliers would want to at least try and recoup some of the value that they sent out for Donovan Mitchell to the Utah Jazz and the first place so it’s worth revisiting that trade they sent oai oai abaji low marinin and Colin Sexton as well as three first round picks and two swaps that’s a lot that they paid for Donovan Mitchell I don’t think that they’re getting that much value back for him this time around because again there’s a lot of uncertainty about his future only one year on his contract like it’d be different if they were negotiating and he had you know three or four years left on his deal because then you could have the utmost confidence that trading for him means you’re actually getting him not that he’s going to walk in one year so it’s tough too because right like for the Cavaliers I don’t think they thought that Lowry Markin was going to turn into an All-Star so do the Cavaliers look foolish in hindsight for the cost that they paid for Donovan Mitchell and all they have to show for it is you know a couple disappointing postseason performances like it’s kind of a tough situation to be in so looking at the other teams that were reported as potential suitors for Donan Mitchell I think they all have all the teams have very different types of trade packages that they would offer right the the Nets and Lakers don’t really have much in the way of like young Blue Chip prospects that they’d be able to send back that would be more enticing than the the Blue Chip talent that the Heat or that the Rockets have available um but I would argue that the picks that the Lakers and Nets have access to the Lakers obviously have their own picks I think they can trade up to three future firsts um and again future firsts for an organization that is like Allin every single year behind trying to win a championship with LeBron and AD that’s a really great place to be if you can get your hands on those picks same thing for the Nets who own the future of the Phoenix Suns which is currently a very murky future with an aging Kevin Durant locked into a Bradley Beal who is underperforming with a no trade clause in his contract and question marks about Devin Booker and his desire to be in Phoenix long term potentially with all this this powder keg of a situation developing around him so those draft assets are going to be really juicy in trade discussions trade talks the Heat have a lot of young Talent right they’ve got Tyler herrow they’ve got uh Nika yovic they’ve got haime hakz um in addition to whatever draft Capital they’d be able to whip up you know a couple first thrown into that deal whatever the rockets and their trade deal would look something like Jaylen green likely as the centerpiece and then I think you’d be including the Nets assets right so the so this year’s number three overall pick has to probably be a four conclusion that’s included I would draw a very firm Line in the Sand and not include the 2025 swap with Brooklyn because that’s the Cooper flag draft and we just saw the basketball Gods shine favorably upon the rockets in this year’s draft with the Nets pick jumping up into the top three and I would definitely want the Rockets to hold on to that net swap next year because that pick could be for whatever the outcome is for the Nets next season could be incredibly valuable in a draft with Cooper flag and other you know other prospects that again you want to keep some of that pipeline of young talent coming in so wouldn’t touch the 2025 pick I would go so far as to include the 2026 outright pick via the Nets as well as the 2027 swap I wouldn’t touch any of Houston’s own draft Capital because again the Rockets do have access to their own picks starting again in 2028 2029 and 2030 but I wouldn’t touch any of that if it’s going to take you including some of those other assets the 2025 swap with Brooklyn or any of Houston’s own draft Capital at the later end of this decade to get your hands on Donovan Mitchell that is too steep of a price to pay but Jaylen green the number three pick in this year’s draft 2026 Nets pick and the 2027 Nets swap so Jaylen green and three first round picks one of them being a top three pick yes I’ll be it in a weaker draft but a top three pick nonetheless I think that’s a pretty fair trade package for a Donovan Mitchell with one year left on his deal and no guarantee that he’s going to stick to wherever he gets traded to now if if you’re a I I would again I would only do this trade if there was a guarantee that Donovan Mitchell is goingon to stay in Houston longterm if you’re telling me that you do this trade and Don Mitchell leaves in a year hell no that’s an awful trade like that that’s a a one- year rental and you’re mortgaging three future firsts or the the first in this year’s draft two more future firsts and Jaylen green potential upside that’s a lot to wager for one year of Donovan Mitchell and that’s that’s I think the crazy part of this conversation is just you know with where the Rockets are at and I made this point but just you know I think it it makes sense to give Jaylen green the benefit of the doubt and let him see if he can build on what he did at the end of this last season now if if he can’t if next year things start out a little rough again and he’s playing some subpar basketball or whatever or he regresses again and that the start of the year does not look good then yes we’re going to revisit we’re going to have some hard conversations about Jaylen green it’s probably not going to be a lot of fun going into the trade deadline yet again like it was this past season but I do think that the Rockets longterm would be in a much much better spot if they held on to this year’s pick drafted another piece of young Talent kept the rest of the Brooklyn picks kept that pipeline of young talent coming in or again just future you know flexibility for making deals with those Brooklyn assets rather than making an all-in move for a guy who is arguably not good enough to be the number one guy on a championship Contender during a time in which it doesn’t even feel like the Rockets have approached their Championship window with this current roster I understand the desire for wanting to add more talent to this team I really do um and I would also argue because I did the episode you know a few weeks back talking about potentially trading for Paul George that’s a very different circumstance in the assets that would be leaving Houston to acquire Paul George in my hypothetical in that show than this hypothetical where you’d be giving up on one of the pieces of the young core 6 so Jaylen Green in this instance as well as mortgaging all those assets those future assets via Brooklyn this is kind of an all-in move it’s not the only all-in move because then the Rockets would still have access to their own assets down the line they’d still have that 2025 swap with Brooklyn that could be a really attractive trade piece down the line at any point they could trade any other members of the young Corps maybe package one or two of them for another you know top 10 top 15 player whatever they they still have options but this type of trade the the weight behind it the cost behind it feels like an all-in move and it doesn’t feel like the Rockets are anywhere near all-in move territory yet at this point in the rebuild so I wanted to flesh it out a little bit further than we did when we talked about it last week because I don’t think we really did the conversation justice so I I’m firmly in the camp right now don’t want to see the Houston Rockets push for Donovan Mitchell unless it’s a guarantee that he’s going to stick around long term and even then right there’s question marks about his fit alongside Fred Van Fleet and like all this stuff but but Fred you know only one more year under contract it’s an expiring deal you know hell they could they could flip Fred Van vet for other assets if they really wanted to and they could run a backourt of Don Mitchell and cam Whitmore or a Min Thompson right out of the gate to start the season there’s nothing that says Fred Van v and Donan Mitchell has to be your starting backourt next year if you make a move for Don Mitchell maybe they make two massive moves maybe they trade Jaylen and pix for Donovan Mitchell and then they trade Fred Van B for whatever they can trade him for with that $40 million contract whether it’s expiring deals whether it’s other assets whether it’s a team that needs some salary cap relief whatever it may be there’s options there I just wouldn’t do the trade under the the parameters Illustrated right like if it costs any of that the Rockets own picks if it cost the 2025 Brooklyn swap uh if there’s no guarantee that Mitchell wants to stick in Houston long term I’m immediately walking away from that deal because it’s too much risk and not enough reward for my taste coming up want to talk about the reporting though involving Malik Beasley as a potential Target for the Houston Rockets in free agency this offseason and how they might actually be able to offset not making a trade for a guy like curious your thoughts on the Don Mitchell situation because I do think there are very legitimate arguments on both sides of the aisle there so let me know those thoughts in the in the YouTube comments pardon me uh where I do want to take the show though here in this final segment is there was some additional reporting by uh the Athletics Kelly e that highlighted uh Malik Beasley as a potential free agent Target for the Houston Rockets now Beasley uh coming off a really successful year with the Milwaukee Bucks uh started in 77 games for them and shot absolutely lights out 41% on seven three-pointers a game when you talk about a rocket team that is in desperate need of some shooting Malik Beasley would be a guy that could provide you some of that shooting uh in a really big way now what would it cost to get Malik Beasley well the Rockets do have access to their non-t taxpayer mle this offseason which clocks in uh first year starting just under $13 million I think it’s like 12.9 million right out of the gate um so you could do a total of like four years $ 55.3 million is what you’re looking at um that might be enough to entice Malik Beasley to come to Houston but I this is I kind of wanted I wanted to discuss this in part because I do think Malik Beasley is an interesting name the rocket should absolutely be pursuing him if at all possible um in addition to there there’s some other free agency Shooters out there on the market this offseason right Luke Canard is another one maybe Kelly UB after you know the really strong year that he had in Philadelphia like there’s a lot of different guys you go after buddy hee is another one different guys who are like you know known as you know Shooters at the NBA level that the Rockets could pursue to to add to this roster I will say though one of the areas that’s really hard to consider here and I I think fans often times don’t take this into account because it the NBA isn’t like playing 2K yes on paper the Rockets have their mle that they can offer to a guy again for years $55 million whatever it is and that’s all well and good but sometimes these players actually want to like have an understanding or a concrete role right they don’t want to just be like in this nebulous state of like yeah you’re going to sign me but like am I actually going to play what’s my role going to be like am I getting a starting spot am I coming off the bench like like what are we doing here and I think this is the really tough situation for the Rockets is they look like as presently constructed they have a strong ninan rotation for next year Fred Van vet Jaylen green Dylan Brooks Jabari Smith Jr Alper and shingu that’s your starting five and then your four main key pieces Off the Bench amen Thompson cam Whitmore T een stepen Adams and that’s not including the fact that they intend to pick up the options for Jan Tate and Jeff Green so those guys are coming back uh now again maybe those guys get traded whatever before the Seas starts what have you fine they intend to bring those guys back it also looks like they want to bring jock landale back no word yet on Aaron holiday haven’t heard anything about him um but this is a team that has a nine man deep rotation and that’s not you know you could say 10 Deep if you factor in Jeff Green for the spot minutes that he plays either on the wing or as a small ball five um and then You’ got your your insurance policy pieces right in Jack landale Jan Tate potentially Aaron holiday if he comes back whatever I think it’s just really tough because if you did bring in Malik Beasley let’s just use him as the example right whose minutes are you taking away whose minutes do you reduce in order to get a guy who Malik Beasley is a really good player like he just started on a very good Milwaukee Bucks team for the majority of the season right so in what world would you be able to compel him to leave Milwaukee for rooll likely coming off the bench right and then without even like a guarantee that he’s going to be like the de facto like Sixth Man Off the Bench like that’s kind of a tough position to be in and that’s going to be the position the Rockets were in with a lot of potential free agent targets right because they’re at a place where Cam Whitmore showed that he could produce at a very high level when given the Reps Amin Thompson was getting was getting starter was he was a starter for the final quarter of the season right how do you how do you walk that back how do you justify cutting down the minutes for cam for a men for tar een who’s one of the most arguably the most impactful player on the Rockets roster from like an advanced analytics perspective like you’re going to want to try and get tar 30 plus minutes a night do you take away the minutes from Jaylen green you take him away from Fred maybe you let Fred rest a little bit more and Coast through the regular season so he doesn’t have as much wear and tear on his body maybe you you reduce his minutes down to you know 30 something a night instead of you know how he was hovering at like 36 37 38 a night for a while there now the problem is the Rockets offense at times would kind of crater without Fred Van vet on the floor because nobody on this Rockets roster could do what Fred Van vet could do from an offensive playmaking and initiating perspective nobody was at his level this past year Jaylen green improved steadily as the year went along and then at the end especially in March I mean he was fantastic but like Malik Beasley doesn’t replace that skill set so I think the Rock roets are in this really interesting predicament where yes they have the NT non-t taxpayer mle to throw it a Target theyve got 13 million you know 12.9 million whatever they could do it for however many years they want to do it for uh up to again four years 55 million but they’d have to find the right player who’d be willing to come back come to Houston and you know again I I don’t even know if they’d have a guaranteed role carved out for them because I think at least the way that it looks right now tar e is probably your like sixth man quote unquote for next season even though he’s not like your bucket getting sixth man he’s probably going to be the high minutes guy off the bench for the Rockets next year I’m imagining he’s getting at minimum 25 plus minutes a night next year guaranteed um assuming Health obviously but then where do you get those other minutes like if you do want to and if you want to go commit 13 million a year you know if you want to go commit four years 55 million to a guy and he doesn’t even have a guarantee roll on the team or he’s you know you’re you’re paying all that money to a guy who’s only going to be your third or fourth most important guy coming off the bench that’s a really tall order I think so while I’m definitely interested in a in a Malik Beasley type in a buddy heel type Luke Canard whatever these different shooters that could potentially make their way over to the Houston Rockets how much is too much to pay for one of those guys and will the Rockets be able to convince any of them to come to Houston in a role that would I think likely be similar to like Reggie Bullock’s role this last season where Reggie Bullock was kind of like the veteran 3 and D shooter that the Rockets brought in and then unfortunately it looked like he’d regressed quite a bit defensively to where they really couldn’t rely on him that much on that side of the ball um and then offensively right he never really got the three-point stroke going but that’s kind of the role that whoever they bring in would have to be willing to fulfill where you you might rack up 3 four five dnps before we get to a game where oh hey it’s you know Malle get in here we’re calling your number get in right or maybe I’m overestimating the impact of the rookies but based on how how good they were in their rookie seasons of men and cam specifically and how good we know tar een to be I’m hardpressed to imagine a world where the Rockets aren’t trying to get those guys as many minutes as possible next year both because they want to win games and those guys have shown to be winning impactful players but also because you don’t want to sacrif you don’t want to sacrifice those developmental reps to a to a different player like you want a men and cam andari getting as many reps as possible continuing to grow under em Oka so while I’m excited that the Rockets are looking at names like Malik Beasley this offseason I think it’s also going to be really tough to come to terms on a deal with a guy um and to find a role for him on this roster moving forward so just wanted to highlight that point here at the end of the show I do want all your thought give me
