Here’s What Jett Howard Showed During the 2023-24 Season
selected 11th overall out of the University of Michigan by the Orlando Magic in the 2023 NBA draft jet Howard spent most of his first professional season in the G league with the aiola magic which finished with the best regular season record in the Eastern Conference between the g-league Showcase regular season and playoffs Howard appeared in 36 G League games and averaged 18.6 points the number one thing he excelled at offensively was his stationary three-point shooting off the catch he took 112 of them and among the 27 players who took a minimum of 100 of them he had the best g-league percentage at 47.3% this is obviously encouraging considering jet as a player going forward that could help Orlando improve as an outside shooting team which was one of their weaknesses in 2023 24 as a team aiola averaged a g-league high 16 made three-pointers per contest this past season while also possessing the best offensive rating Orlando meanwhile averaged the second fewest three-point attempts in the NBA and made 35.2% of them jet has a really quick release which makes it tough for Defenders to time and contest his shots from the perimeter impressive too is that he was effective shooting the ball from from all around the ark the left wing specifically was where he thrived the most though shooting 51.2% on 43 stationary catch and shoot attempts he was less efficient shooting from distance off movement coming off an off ball screen in these situations he made 17 of his 50 attempts which is 34% those 50 attempts were tied for the seventh most in the g-league this past season overall from three-point range he shot 37.4% something else we saw jet do a fair amount of was be the recipient of handoffs to which then he would work to create space for shots per second Spectrum data he took 48 shots in these scenarios and made 17 of them which is 35.4% 34 of those shots came from three-point range but he did only make nine of them so most of his success in this play type was when he put the ball on the floor and moved inside the ark occasionally we’d also see jet attack the close out with a drive as shown here there was some opportunity for Howard to be more of a Creator out of pick and roll and pick and pop action although it’s unlikely he’ll be put in these situations much with Orlando considering they have plenty of creators already primarily poo banero fron Vagner and Cole Anthony but I do think this is something we might see jet do a bit more if he’s playing in a second unit role where he could be asked to generate more offense and be a bit of a playmaker which he’s capable of doing with his blend of size and handles one particular thing that I expect Howard to add when he gets more playing time in Orlando is transition three-point shooting let’s remember Orlando was one of the best forcing opponents into turnovers if there’s more shooting on the floor that’ll give them more opportunity to get open looks from downtown in transition after coming up with steals perhaps the most underrated aspect of Jet’s game is his perimeter defense this was something that I think went under the radar when he was at Michigan and I think it’s a big reason why the magic chose him with the 11th overall pick and I think he’ll fit right in with Orlando’s main principles one of which is closing out to Shooters and contesting shots on the perimeter this is something that jet did at a high level in the g-league opponents made just 34% of their threes with Howard as the closest Defender now Howard did get a little bit of a run with the parent club in Orlando appearing in 18 games but pretty much all of his minutes came in the fourth quarter of games that were essentially already decided by that point so that’ll wrap up this video If you like this kind of content please subscribe
