Stop the bad draft talk There are players for the Utah Jazz

[Music] that’s enough of the bad draft talk there’s players there I keep seeing them and the Jazz can have one if they get it right we’ll hit it next unlocked on Jazz you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day how are you I’m David lock radio voice Utah jazz jazz MBA Insider hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend on today’s edition of locked on Jazz we’re GNA review a little Jazz draft history to remember what a bad draft is and I keep watching players who I like there’s Talent out there maybe not in the top five but that’s not our problem we’ll talk about some of the next to your guys as well look back at Luca and Kyrie who are just ridiculous in what they doing and I don’t know that I think there’s really an answer to how anyone’s supposed to be doing it I listen to my friend Stan Van Gundy talk about it I listen to a bunch of other people talk about it I don’t know what I think the answer is supposed to be on any of these on how you stop Luca and Kyrie right now we’ll talk about it all coming up as I mentioned I’m David lock radio voice of the Utah Jazz jazznba Insider this is locked on Jazz it’s about the bad draft talk the implication when I hear this bad draft talk is literally that there’s going to be nobody okay we went through it if you have are an every dayer and I went back through starting from 20 2007 which is Kevin Durant’s draft the last player still playing to 2020 2021 I felt like I just didn’t know where the players were so we have this this a collection of data and we graded every draft pick that they’re either a 10 an MVP caliber Kevin Durant a seven a top 20 player a five a top 50 player they get three points for being a starter two players for rotation and one for being Borderland okay if you look over the years and you there is a consistent theme in almost all of these drafts there is about 10 to 12 players in every draft on average that literally become nothings like literally become zeros in fact I’ll pull you the exact average for every draft the And Then There are a certain average of starters there’s a baseline that we can take on what we think a play a draft can get us and then you can decide whether it’s good or bad from there but the point you’re going to get here so there are on average 11.5 first round picks become non-players non non- rotation non-impact players and on average 10 players players become starters so in every draft if you’re drafting in the first round it is more likely that you are drafting someone who never becomes a rotation player than someone if you can be a starter okay more likely now there’s the rotation players and are in here in Borderland right okay that’s the difference but like zeros literally zeros they’re not even a borderline player zeros 11 .5 for the first round okay starters 10 for the first round this is every draft now are some drafts worse than others yes we went through it if you recall and the 2012 draft is the worst the 2012 and the 2010 drafts those are the two worst drafts in our number system we had the 2012 draft is the Anthony Davis draft which Anthony Davis then Michael kid gilis Bradley Beal Dion Waiters Thomas Robinson Dame Lillard Harrison Barnes Terence Ross Andre Drummond Reeves and then it just drops off Myers Leonard Jeremy Lamb Kendall Marshall John Hensen Maurice harkless Royce walk okay it drops off you got it you don’t need me to list every pick that was the that was the 2012 draft the other draft that we had that was particularly poor was the 2010 draft now I think it’s also worth noting by the way that in this time period in which see these drafts are suddenly not coming through that’s John Wall Evan Turner Derrick Favors Wesley Johnson DeMarcus Cousins EP Udo Greg Monroe Alfa Ruku Gordon haard I mean still some players Paul George but then it really dropped off then after Paul George’s pick there’s it just Cole Aldridge Xavier Henry Ed Davis Patrick Patterson Larry Sanders Luke babbit okay drops off it’s worth noting that there’s a revolution in the game of basketball taking place right there called Steph Curry right the game is going through a dramatic turn of events in this time period when those two terrible drafts happen in the last five years the drafts have yielded nine 15 13 let me rephrase that since from 2016 to 2020 when the game evolves in 2016 we got nine starters in 2017 we got 15 in 2018 we got 13 2019 we got 12 and in 2020 we got 13 starters we still got zeros right the 2016 draft yielded 17 zeros the most of any draft then we got 12 eight n so we still averaged our 10 zeros but my point is two things every draft has more chance of you getting a nothing than a starter in the first round my second point is the since the games evolved we really haven’t had a bad draft since maybe 2015 some drafts are better than others three of our last four drafts we looked at 2020 2018 and 2017 are fabulous so I have a hard time believing that just all of a sudden in 2024 we’re dropping off the map and moreover as the more I’m watching players the more I like them understanding that my Benchmark here is not that I got a star but if I can get a starter right we just established that only 33% of first round picks become a starter or better so if I can get a starter I I I’m a static well last night I watched a bunch of the other day I watched Devin Carter he can play Devin Carter can play Devin Carter is the older 63 guard 62 guard out of Providence he’s 22 years old he’s got a 68 wingspan 193 pounds like the dude can play is he an NBA starter maybe better than 33% chance yeah here’s what’s tricky on this draft and this is why everyone feels this way it it people aren’t necessarily wrong it’s just getting carried away is that the players who are all exciting have something that doesn’t feel like it matches so if you go to the top and go to Donovan Kling and like we’re watching in the playoffs right now it’s hard to be a 72 Wing un Center unless you’re super mobile Rob dillingham’s really good but he’s 61 175 Reed Shepard’s really good but he’s 61 Ron Holland and Stephen Castle have Better Bodies they can’t shoot Dalton connect is interesting at 65 you wish he was 67 and Kyle corver Devin Carter’s interesting he’s 6’2 you wish he wasn’t 22 Jared McCain is interesting but he’s just 6’2 right so I get it I get it that there’s something you look at on every single one of these players and you’re like H and I do think that size Matters more than ever before in our league but I also think there’s something where I’m watching the playoffs and there’s some guys that don’t fit all of the exact form of what you’re supposed to be as a player and they’re surviving that makes sense so yeah it might not be a topheavy draft and when we look through it at the end it might not get in our point system you know the best draft ever is 2011 it had 74 point total or in ours TW 2008 had 77 and our most recent drafts have been 72 7773 and completely loaded depth drafts 2018 was very very good 20 seems to be very good yeah it might not be that but even the drafts that aren’t good we haven’t had a draft since 2012 that’s had less than seven starters okay so that’s that’s even Le but the 20 12 draft only had six starters right that’s during the revolution in five of our six of our last that we’ve looked at six of our last seven drafts have had at least nine starters and have had 11 15 13 12 13 okay so this could be a little less still 10 starters out there that’s just what the numbers say and just like every other draft there’s going to be 10 to 12 players who are zeros so let’s talk about two of the guys I watched this week Jared McCain the 19-year-old Duke point guard who is actually 20-year-old Duke point guard 62 203 and let’s talk about jacobe Walter the 19-year-old 64 198 pound Wing player who looks so much bigger at 610 wingspan we’ll look at both those guys watched them last night we’ll keep an eye on them as we continue on this Tuesday edition of locked on Jazz thanks so much for making locked on Jazz your first listen today the show is brought to you day all right I really like Jared McCain I really like Jared McCain um first off when we did our draft numbers he came out great so there is a chance that I’m watching Jared McCain with a little bit of a pre-bias that I’m wanting to like him if you go back to our draft numbers on McCain he’s one of the players I liked he’s in the 87th percenti in transition which is incredible for a 6-3 guard he’s 69th percentile in limited isolation he’s in the 70th percent out Rim which is terrific he ran 69 pick and rolls he’s in the 93rd percenti out that is the only player that is better in pick and roll is Terence Shannon JR out of Illinois who is a fiveyear senior which is often the case of some smarts there um I have some other players I need to run because some other players are emerging but that’s right so McCain is the best with seven 69 attempts which is not a ton he’s the best pick and roll guard in the draft his spot up percentile is the 78th percentile his catch and shoot percentile is the 90th percentile so there are a bunch of guys in this draft that are better Reed Shepard’s better Rob dillingham’s better Cody Williams is better in the 95th percentile Dalton connect in the 88th percent NOP he’s in the 90th and then in uh and then Kon George is in the 92nd percent but not a lot and then his off the bounce is in the 61st percentile what I love about him excuse me his op balance is in the 81st percentile what I love about him is he took 103 of them the only guys that are better are Reed Shepard Rob Dillingham Kyle flowski who took 26 Bob Carrington and teren Shannon Jr again so McCain from an offensive standpoint Peaks out when I watch him play the number one thing I would say about jiren mcken and I texted actually a scout this last night he reminds me of an old Seattle Seahawk middle linebacker named Loa tupu and I’ll tell you a story about loofa tupu Loa tupu was the Seahawks middle linebacker who was drafted out of USC and he was supposed to be too small and too short and he got drafted fairly early like third round I think and everyone thought it was kind of a a bad draft by the Seahawks and and I was covering the Hawks at the time and lofu was only six feet tall he was just you know there was just it made no sense right he was six feet tall he was too slow there were all these things that were not going to work for him and I remember going in I think it was Tim Russ what was his name Tim russet Tim Russell and he drapped him in the second round 45th pick and everyone thought it was crazy and I remember I went into his office their GM and he he said let me show you something and he pulls up the film and he literally shows me that Loa tupu is taking a step earlier than every other player on the field with his di with his diagnosis of the play so he’s the middle linebacker and he’s literally taking a step before anyone else is on the floor you can on the field you can see he’s moving first he’s like okay well his 40 might be off and his he might be a little small but he’s not actually running a 40 he’s running a 35 while everyone else is running a 40 because he’s making a move first or you know he didn’t say that but that’s the concept that’s how I feel about McCain both offensively and defensively I feel like he was a step ahead of every other player on the floor just instinctually got it defensively he just would make rotations as the ball arrived not the ball’s there and then oh God I got to rotate the ball would arrive and he would arrive defensively I thought he just did a really wonderful job setting up his man he’s got a solid shot he played into a low pick and roll left-handed and right-handed his body’s interesting his body is Jaylen brunson’s body he’s 63 205 very heavy legged big body so he’s not getting up over the top of the 10 but we just gave you all of his finishing numbers so like I could be really worried about the fact that he can’t get up over the cup and he’s not a big jumper except for fact he finishes strong I would like to see some oneit jumping but he goes two feet there’s a reason for two foot jumping two foot jumping is I’m strong and I’m powerful I’m going to go into your body I’m going to handle it um defensively he just did everything I thought he just did everything really well he shot the Gap when he was supposed to shoot the Gap he anticipated routes he jumped to the outside of his shoulder knowing from clearly knowing The Scouting Report of where the guy was supposed to go and then derailed he’s down on the Baseline and he’s guarding him like this and all of a sudden he sees the play and he jumps to the out to the to the inside shoulder of his guy forcing him to take two steps out of bounds which means then when he rode him all the way through the route he’s suddenly three steps further out than he would have been earlier he played defense he played everything early the biggest mistake you watch on young players is they play defensive possessions late um he’s got he’s guarding his man and the pick comes to him and he steps into the ball handler he’s strong enough now this is college but he’s strong enough at 63 205 to step into the ball handler rather than getting hit by the pick and he and he again Alters the route I thought he dictated his space that’s a big one for me when I look at players do you own your space um really beautiful pick and Route with uh with what’s his name flipin nowski that’s not his name um the center who is not that great um who I kind of wanted to like really really really wanted to like uh filipowski um who I still kind of like uh I just think he’s Ryan Anderson not a backup center but that’s a different story uh filipowski um is their Center he ran some great pick and rolls with him read it correctly uh crafty around the basket super super step through I need to watch more of McCain but this is where I kind of opened the show today that’s an NBA player is he gonna be a superstar well we certainly didn’t think Jaylen Bruns was going to be a super Superstar when he was what either the last pick of the first round or the first pick of the second round I don’t I’m not saying this guy’s going to be Jaylen Brunson but it’s not the craziest thought of I don’t think he’s GNA score 30 Jaylen Bronson’s on a different level but this kid can really play and really understands the game now he’s 62 with a 63 wingspan so to that’s where to me he’s low fo to tupu like if you read Kevin o Conor’s ringer Big Board which is terrifically well done lacks a quick First Step limitting his ability create a t space sometimes he’s unable to turn the corner against longer Defenders which makes him from prevents him from getting all the way to the basket 100% right but I’m watching him if he’s a step faster then maybe the quick First Step doesn’t matter as much if he can’t create space that’s fine he knows how to use a pick undiz below the rim finish will need creative ways to finish them in the NBA yeah I think we watched with Keon George this year like an Above the Rim finisher who suddenly couldn’t get finish Above the Rim I like him 41% on threes five rebounds a game true shooting percentage was 61% I like him now I have I have a rule about scouting when you watch a player and you have a comp and so Mike this goes back to the this is my old Andre Miller Rule and this one makes me a little nervous on him and the Andre Miller rule is that when you tell me the comp is Andre Miller I’m like okay Andre Miller was a one in a unique player that played to the ground this guy’s actually Andre Miller esque who’s your next one and there isn’t one the next one’s like Kendall Marshall he doesn’t play in the league so it’s kind of you can kind of say hey this is like Kevin o Conor has him as Seth Curry which I don’t think he is because I think he’s much more physical and he can handle the ball and he can play defensively so I don’t I don’t love that comp so if I’m saying he’s a poor man’s Jaylen Brunson my comment my question would be who is a poor man’s Jaylen Brunson and if there isn’t one then then that’s a problem I love this thing I read I think I saw it on Reddit that the most common comp right now on any player in the draft is Derek white that he’s like the invo guy and it makes some sense but Derrick White’s an elite athlete he’s the number one shop loock in guard in the league so I think you got to be pretty careful with that but it’s an interesting one jacobe Walker Walter excuse me jacobe Walter is worth a discussion as well we’ll touch on some other Fringe players and we’ll touch on Luca and Kyrie and their Brilliance as well we’ll watch more Jared mlan we’re gonna watch more Devin Carter uh there’s gonna be a lot of watching going on this week and for the coming up here uh on the show I’m just going to keep watching players and share with you what I think but there’s players out there and I think jacobe Walter might be another one who’s worth talking about today’s show is brought to you by FanDuel we’re getting awfully close close to the NBA finals who had Dallas wow fanduel.com lockon and get in on the game and make every moment more with our friends over at FanDuel here’s what we’ve got going for you right now with FanDuel that makes things awfully fun it’s winner take all time so you get new customers get $150 in count it’s America’s number one Sportsbook FanDuel it’s also locked on it’s num official sports book of lockon fanduel.com to get and right now tonight Min Dallas is a two-point favorite over Minnesota these games have been incredible uh Anthony Edwards the score 40 or more is plus 1100 kyita score 40 or more is plus 2600 they’ve got a fun little parlay for you PJ Washington to score 15 or more Nas Reed to score 15 or more PJ Washington to record eight rebounds Nas Reed to score six rebounds if you get all those $10 ends you $271 all taking place right now plus you can get involved in the French Open if you want to uh the finals line right now in the NBA uh is Boston is minus 220 and Dallas is Plus 185 uh Jason Tatum to be the finals MVP is plus 100 Lucas plus 210 Kyrie’s plus 2000 interesting that is fanduel.com lockon fanduel.com lockon jacobe Walter Young I thought looked long did not measure out 64 well 610 wingspan certainly is being talked about around the 14th pick he did a few things that like jumped out uh I think it’s whatever drew it is at Baylor runs I think it’s Bryce or Scott one of the two Scott drew he runs the best out of- bounds plays and Walter on two different occasion on the Move catch and shoot uh threes off inbounds that were pretty impressive really a pretty good shooter I think so here’s what happened I watch the Duke game and he looks really really good and then you start watching as the season goes on and it starts to fall apart and I don’t know why um his numbers as the season goes on get worse and worse and worse and worse and worse however this was the eighth highest recruit in the country his conference play is far worse than his regular play which gets a little nerve-wracking he went up against better players scouting reports things like that but in Big 10 play or Big 12 play in 20 games he shot 32% from the field and 29.7% from three the guy I watched against Duke could really shoot it really comfortable some something along the way blows his confidence and it’s a problem Conference tournament he goes four of 19 I did not love that on back-to-back drives he was the exact opposite of McCain he just gets blown by I mean blown by and it’s because he’s playing defense late he reminded me of a young Alec Burks when Alec Burks used to always stand up and then someone would drive and then he’d get down in the position and by the time he’s down position it’s over um he ends up shooting 34% from three he starts the year really really good like 11 games into the season having played some teams he’s shooting 39% from three shooting 42% overall as a freshman 14 points four rebounds he looks really really good and as I mentioned he has kind of this good game against BYU he has a decent game and where he has 16 his 15th game of the year and at that point he’s 44% from the field 40% from three and then if you go from that day on it just falls off the map so you have to figure out on him what happened and why but he runs the floor I thought he played hard he had an enticing handle like he does a lot of things with basketball he looks he just looks young he’s 65 195 uh I I like this is a totally legitimate op player to take a run at if you get jacobe Walter in the 10th pick of the draft and starters 30% of the time you’re not getting a start like this kid’s got he’s on one side of the other like if he hits he’s an NBA starter he’s 65 he’s a two guard he can really shoot it he can handle pretty well he focus in he grows up he’s just a baby on the other end if you can’t shoot any better than he did in in conference play and that’s who you have that’s someone who a ways off GNA take some time but that’s the right body 65 195 with a 610 wingspan um and he his handle’s loose but he he’s playing with it he’s trying he’s coming off a pick and roll he’s doing some interesting things um I I think there’s a lack of like I’m hoping on the drive-bys there was a lack of understanding of like The Scouting Report because he got beat on left-hand drives both times like it’s okay force him left but no no not straight line left like there’s a lot of that kind of stuff but I would say this like I love the fact that he runs like he played hard like I’ve watched a lot of college who didn’t play hard I’d actually say everyone I’ve watched right now is playing hard which is a big step in the right direction a few other kids that I watched in that game that are of interest um the Duke Center filipowski is 611 with a a 610 with a 610 Wings span I don’t think he can play five he’s really skilled but he just he’s not gonna be able to protect the rim at all he got pushed around a little bit I I think he’s I think he’s going to struggle he’s going to be on the board right around the Jazz at 29 I wonder whether he can become Ryan the old Ryan Anderson but I don’t know whether Ryan Anderson still totally exists in our league where you’re just a spot up three-point shooter and if he has to guarden space I don’t know how he’s going to do it the Baylor Center who’s only three years into the league Missy is interesting also I generally am not a fan of grabbing the kid who hasn’t played and trying to get him develop in the NBA I just don’t think it works um it take it back to Jordan Hill I kind of am a believer that you need 10,000 hours to be able to play in the NBA um Miss’s probably going to be drafted around the 20s I get it like the kids got some instincts blocking shots and doing some things and playing he’s I don’t love the way he moves his free throw shooting’s at 50% but boy I’ll tell you what if you watch him he does enough things to Super Intrigue you but the fact to me it’s a no on lack of hours on the court they don’t love the way his body moves he doesn’t feel or see the game as a passer and he can’t shoot free throws so to me it’s just really disconcerting but he’s 611 with a 72 wingspan who instinctually blocks shots in recovery in a way that you can’t teach and plays super hard and is really into it the other kid I watched was the bridges kid out of Baylor who I will admit I wasn’t zeroed in on but he popped a few times and he’s 67 with a 610 Wings spin he’s 23 I would have liked him to have a bigger impact and his shooting was 41% from three this year he’s a really good free throw shooter he was a low usage player I’m going to guess he makes an impact in the NBA a minor one in that he has been a role player on a team and he’s not going to have to go through the adjustment that every other college player does that when they come to the NBA they have to suddenly adjust to how to play all right quickly because I’m now long the Wolves Dallas for all these conversations you got to make shots like if you’re watching the playoffs if there’s nothing else that jumps out of you all the playoffs you’ve got to make shots we can talk about all these guys and all they’re going to do but I’ll tell you what like the shot making is crazy and if you can’t shoot they don’t guard you and you screw up everything uh was pretty interesting to watch Dallas go to Five out there for a little bit their defense becomes atrocious but they are simply unguardable when they’re five out with maxi kba coming back that’s going to be a big part of the NBA Finals um I get all the conversation like from Stan Van cundy that you’ve got to get the ball out of Lucas’s hands because he’s making ridiculous shots all the time on the other end like if that literally is the answer I’ve said this a million times on the show if that’s literally the answer you’re dead if you’re if you have to be doubling guy 45 feet in the NBA in this day and age and they have Shooters on the floor you’re dead and that’s why Dallas is going to the NBA finals uh there is like no one sry about the fact that if you go run possession by possession late like Luca traveled and Luca turned it over like I don’t think Minnesota’s doing the wrong thing defensively Luca and Kyrie are making crazy stupid shots that are so absurd and so insane and they’re going to win because of it but that’s what you have to force them to do I mean Kyrie’s fadeaway over carlan towns in the corner Luca’s fade step backs those are brilliant unbelievable shots and if that’s what you’re forcing I’m gonna take it I thought the uh Mike Conley cut in late in the game the other night about the Small Things was super important it was recorded earlier but the biggest play of the game is Anthony Edwards just Lolly dagging on defense leaves PJ Washington wide open for a corner three not even off a double he just doesn’t guard he just stops guarding for a possession PJ Washington hits the three and Nails it and that’s probably the biggest possession of the game in it in a series in which literally has been determined all three games now by combined about that one got away a little bit but generally up to that point we’re combined by about seven points you just can’t waste a possession Mike was exactly right the one I thought was really interesting also 245 everyone hates that you just play boring one onone isolation basketball 245 left in the game Minnesota tries to come out and play motion which all of us always say oh please do that and then they don’t get they basically don’t get a shot there is an element you got to know who’s going to shoot when they’re going to shoot how they’re gonna get the ball and where they’re going to shoot from and that’s why you just get boring old high pick and roll and boring old isolation late in games because coaches know exactly what they’re going to get who what when and where and in that time Minnesota came out with this motion with 245 left and end up with a Mike Conley prayer because the shot clock ran out on them because they didn’t get anything out of The Possession it reminded you why coaches do that all right I was eager to go with a day off little long day my apologies on that right now we’ll send you the first ever 247 National Sports channel locked on sports today have a great one we’ll talk tomorrow lot of watching of players want your comments and your thoughts as well here on locked on jazz

The main discussion right now is that this the 2024 NBA Draft is a bad draft. However, every draft averages 10 players that are NBA starters out of the first round and 10 players that will never make a rotation. David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider insists that their are players in this draft to take a look at and who the Utah Jazz can get as a player.

Locke takes a focus look at Duke freshman Jared McCain. He is Jalen Brunson light and makes a ton of players and has a characteristic that reminds Locke of a former Seattle Seahawk linebacker Lofa Tutupo.

Locke is also intregired by Ja’Kobe Walter whose after a strong start had his season go array at Baylor. What is the real version of him?

Locke takes a moment to talk about the Dallas v. Minnesota series and actually believes that Minnesota is doing the right things defensively, but Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are just doing too much.

  1. NBA has predetermined results like Pro-Wrestling. All of these games are settled in the last two minutes, easy to control and manipulated by the referees. Different elements of the NBA make plenty of money off of the outcome of these games. When almost every single game in the Conference Finals ends nearly the same way, its time to remember we are basically watching a bogus "competitive" sport that is no better than seeing Hulk Hogan wrestling the Undertaker. (Ask Howard Eisley if this is true or Greg Ostertag)

  2. and we gave up K. Olynyk- a STARTER, for a small chance to get a rotational player, while Fontecchio -ANOTHER STARTER was given away for a coffee machine stand

  3. There are so many small players that are ranked high. Rob Dillingham is working out for us and has the same measurements as Allen Iverson 6’1 6”3 wingspan. Jared Mcain is an inch taller. I wonder if some players like Collier , Mcain, Sheppard, Devin Carter could drop much further than expected even one of them there at 29. I think I would rather take a bigger player at 10.

  4. The Mavs with just Luka are good. With Kyrie's finishing? Absurd.
I tell my kids – winning basketball is all about which team more effectively pressures the rim. Kyrie and Luka do that better than any combo in the league. Tatum and Brown could be close, but Tatum jacks too many threes.
