Blazers your team every day in today’s show gonna talk about the Blazer second pre-draft workout held on Tuesday at the teams practice facility were listening to Wednesday May 29th show I appreciate you listening on Tuesday the Blazers held a pre-draft workout with six new uh six new draft hopefuls in the building Isaiah Crawford from Louisiana Tech Alex cariban from Yukon Caleb love from Arizona Quinton post from Boston College Tyler Smith from the G League ignite and kle wear out of Indiana were in the building couple uh potential Lottery guys and Tyler Smith and clle we that’s who we’ll talk about at the top of the show and then we’ll talk about the rest of the folks to close the show um I am intimately familiar with Caleb Love’s College journey and career uh Quinn posty have some opinions about Alex caraban as well so uh we’ll get to all of them in the third segment but let’s let us start here with kle wear kle wear is uh a 7 footer who started his freshman year at Oregon he was a five-star recruit heading to heading to Eugene to play for the Ducks and it just didn’t work out he just it just didn’t it just didn’t translate in in year one he wasn’t very good in his lone season at Oregon he transfers to Indiana for his sophomore campaign and he’s good he’s just like he was you know it was he was supposedly going to be a oneandone type right like he was going to be a lottery pick after a single season and he wasn’t he was not only not a lottery pick he was like someone who needed to go back to school to continue to improve his game and he did he was he was freaking better at Indiana um in a sophomore season Indiana he averaged 15.9 points 9.9 rebounds one and a half assists and 1.9 blocks per game almost two blocks a game at 1.9 shot 61% from two 42.5% from three and a surprisingly poor 63% at the foul line and about four and a half attempts per game he made 43s in 30 games like he didn’t shoot a ton it’s more than one a night obviously 40 and 30 games but it’s not like he’s bombing from three um but he made him uh his freshman year he shot way more threes uh he he he he made 55 in in 35 games at at Oregon as opposed to just 40 in 30 games just shot way more that at at um with the Ducks but he shot 27% from three he was like a he was like a theoretical shooter and then at Indiana he’s shooting you know like um one and a half a night basically one and a third a night um and but he’s making a really high clip 43% is a really high clip for a seven-footer measured 611 and and and three quarters at the at the NBA Combine so he’s basically a true seven-footer I mean I guess that true the word true doesn’t actually mean that that I just used but he is he is very close to he’s a false seven-footer right he’s a quarter inch short um but he’s you know he’s 7-footer he’s 20 years old um I thanks my handy dandy uh spreadsheet I’m going to look over here if you’re watching on YouTube I’m looking at my other screen look at my handy dandy spreadsheet um ESPN has him as 25 on their big board the ringer has him 20 uh friend of the program Rafael Barlo had a CLA Weare at 13 and Sam Vini and his mock draft had CLA Weare going 33rd um those are just four that I choose because they’re they’re fairly in depth and available right now we’ll continue to update these as we go but in general he is considered a first Roundy type pick right um I think he would be in play if the Blazers were to draft him they’d have to take him at 14 no later than 14 um the Blazers have 7 14 34 and 40 it would be very surprising if if K where slipped into the second round and was available at 34 so if the Blazers are interested in him 14 is the spot to do so um I think I really like the idea of Clare I really really like the idea of him he is a 7 Foot Center who can stretch the floor to the three-point line is not a terrible playmaker and has real uh Rim protection shot blocking chops being being able to guard the rim stretch the floor but also having the ability to score inside 60 60 what is it 61% on twos like in this draft a guy who averaged 1610 and two blocks and shot 43% from three on one and a one and a half attempts a game like that’s really intriguing the knock on wear is that his motor doesn’t run very hot is that he doesn’t he maybe doesn’t play hard and when he spoke to the media today without being prompted he spoke um you know kind of said he’s trying to dispel that exact label because he’s he knows he’s someone who is you know he’s he’s he’s got a high dog dog in him per 36 right um I do think there is a tendency this time of year for once the narrative kind of sets with someone oh this dude doesn’t play very hard then it just kind of gets repeated in a bunch of other draft services and like everyone kind of roles with it um it’s also been something that has maybe followed talented guys and some talented guys don’t shake it there’s plenty of examples of like really talented doesn’t always play hard and that player flops out of the league but I think there’s recent examples and I’m thinking specifically of of Gigi Jackson at at coming out of South Carolina where it’s like yeah you know a lot of talent didn’t quite put it together has had some maturity issues we don’t know if he’ll put it all together he gets in the pros and he looks like is’s going to be an excellent player in the league right like he’s have really like the talent um and the as he matured and got older the the talent like didn’t go anywhere and he was able to as he continued to mature be a very very effective basketball player I’m not saying that clle Weare is definitely going to follow that path I don’t know I’m just saying that like sometimes guys get a label and then that label is who they are and I I can say with confidence I didn’t watch a minute of kware play basketball this year um I’ve watched some highlights I’ve watched some film I’ve watched a little little YouTube scouting prior to prior to this and um you know that seems to be the knock right is that maybe his engine maybe he doesn’t he doesn’t run hot all the time I do think playing hard is a skill if you’re a long time listening to the program shout out my everyday or you know that I believe playing hard is a skill I don’t think playing hard is something like I think it is something you can do sometimes but in the way that like some guys um have to remember to get a body on someone to box out guys have to remember to play hard who don’t naturally do it some guys always box out because they’re natural rebounders some guys have to think about it some guys naturally play hard some guys have to think about it I think playing hard is a skill so it’s a skill you can lack it’s also a skill you can sharpen skill you can develop um and players just mature like Clare just turned 20 um perhaps at age 22 he’ll have the maturity that he didn’t have at 19 when he kind of earned that label and then and then he’ll move forward perhaps he’ll never shake it some guys don’t all some guys don’t always run hot and it is the thing but I’ll say this if that’s just if if the biggest concern with him is that he doesn’t always have a really high motor and it’s like sometimes he’s you know sometimes he just plays a little softer plays a little slower plays without sort of physicality and force I might be willing to take a take a flyer on him I mean I I understand that that that the inherent risks and that that’s why I say I really like the idea of cloudware I think I’m like I think I’m into I’m I’m into the exact archetype that he could be an athletic seven-footer who has you know he’s he’s probably not going to be this like Elite switchable defender in the league like the super unicorn but enough athleticism to be at least decent at that with shooting chops rim rim protection ability a little bit of playmaking who rebounds and and can score I love the idea of Clare I’m not sure you get you know you don’t always get the best version of anyone but I am I am intrigued enough to probably put him in my um high like does my list matter but my high interest list at 14 I I I I I I I am intrigued enough by what he brings to the table to be um to put him like on my short list of guys I think they they should and and and could Target it I think it’s probably could and then should in my my sort of hierarchy could and then should Target at 14 and bringing them into the building suggests that they’re at least interested in him you know I don’t it’s certainly no guarantee that they draft him but if they want to if they want kle wear to be involved in the program they probably have to draft him in the first round and their last first round pick is uh is at 14 I think he is a interesting flyer I don’t think he’s like this Stone Cold lock I don’t feel strongly enough about him to say he’s absolutely the guy but on my short list of players who could be the guy kle wear’s name has is officially on the short list of could bees let’s talk about another guy who’s on that short list Tyler Smith worked out for the Blazers a guy who went pro at 16 and is now heading into the NBA before his 20th birth day he’s been playing he’s been playing not high school basketball for a long time let’s talk about Tyler Smith someone who I find pretty intriguing and actually saw in person once this season join me in that second segment won’t you first though I want to tell you about game time it’s the spot for last minute tickets if you are someone who kind of can can be prone to procrastination there is no better app to have on your phone than game time there might be better ones but if you’re a sports fan who is a procrastinator and you are like I don’t know if I want to go to the game and then day of hour of after the first after the after kickoff after tip off you like oh I actually do want to go game time’s going to be the spot for it they’ve got last minute ticket guaranteed all right CL Weare a name on my short list the other name of my short list that was in the building today when the Blazers held their second pre-draft workout was Tyler Smith um if you’re a regular listener to the show when I talked about some targets that I liked at 14 I mentioned Tyler Smith and if you’re a really regular listener to the show you remember when I went back to when I went to the g- league ignite game when the Blazers uh when the Rip City remix hosted the g- league ignite to to do some in-person scouting of potential draft hopefuls um and my takeaway from Tyler Smith when I saw him in person was like that’s probably an NBA player but my main concern when I watched him play was that I didn’t think he was quite big enough to be a center in the NBA just like watching him up close this one game like you know in a he played like 23 minutes in a g- league game so it’s not like I bu he shot pretty well in that game played pretty well but it’s like this isn’t extensive scouting this but this is in person at great great seats Rip City remix fun event um but like uh my my in-person Scout was that not quite big enough to play center in the pros but solid solid shooter um has sort of the physical tools to look like look like a pro um particularly on offense but because he’s not quite big enough to be a center but he kind of has Center type of lateral quickness I worry that his career backup right was like yeah that that that might be you know UND an undersized big who’s more five than four and he matured 69ine at the combine Barefoot so um like you know a shade above 610 and shoes um it’s like that might not be um you know that might not be a starting center but he has has a lot of complimentary skills um across 43 g-league games the g- league splits their season so um I’m combining them both they’ve got the Showcase season then they go and then they come back and they play the regular season um and they split them in half but across 43 games across the Showcase and regular season for the g- league Tyler Tyler Smith mostly was a bench player for the ignite mostly came off the bench played about 22 minutes a game uh 13.7 points 5.1 boards 1.3 assists and just under a block at 0.9 blocks 48% from the field 36% from three 7 73% with the free throw line I think on offense he has he does a lot of intriguing stuff right like um I think he’s got okay touch I think he he’s stretchy and can shoot he can rebound a little bit um the knock on him from folks who’ve watched him up close from the sort of scouting world is that he is a rough defensive player and I think that probably limits some of his upside and that kind of checks out with my inperson Scout right he like just watching him it’s like well he’s like not really mobile and he’s like more five than four and then the concern is that he’s just like really has a long way to go on defense and I and to be to be fair like when you’re drafting someone at and this again I think he’d be the target at 14 let me run through handy dandy spreadsheet one more time uh ESPN has him at 27 the ringer has him at 29 Rafael Barlo really likes Tyler Smith and Rafael Baro a smart person in his early May big board he had Tyler Smith at nine nine nine like high up there uh San Vini had him at 29 in his mock draft um that’s s Vini of the athletic um so like again he’s a first round guy 27 29 9 and 29 like he’s most folks have him going the first round if the Blazers want him to be on the team he’s unlikely to be there at 34 although he could be I guess in the grand scheme um but like he’s he’s along with we very likely to be like maybe 14 is a little out higher than like his projected range but 34 is below his projected range so it’s like either trade back which is we it’s hard to know if that’s possible in this exact moment but certainly could be on the board could be a possibility um could doing a lot of work in that sentence but if you want him on the team he seems to be a Target at 14 along with where these are your two Lottery options in this particular draft I like Tyler Smith because I think he has enough solid skills to be an NBA Pro but I’m not sure that I see like long-term NBA starter I kind of see like less like Al Horford with less feel but Young Horford was like a very very very very very good defensive player so maybe I mean like old how old Al Horford but as a 19-year-old um like he’s to me he’s um to me he’s I think just from the little bit of watch and what I’ve read about him bankable as a pro like bankable as a pro but maybe not bankable Beyond like oh yeah at some point in his career If he if it all breaks out he’s like a starting power forward in the NBA or he’s an undersized five or he plays a bunch of minutes but not against every single team because he’s not quite big enough and not quite not quite good enough on the defensive end um I like him I think he’s on my short list of of players still he was on my short list like three weeks ago and I don’t think anything has materially changed he’s probably lower on my list than where although I do think Smith probably just because of the shooting skills like Smith turned pro at 16 turned Pro is kind of a relative term he joined overtime Elite at 16 like didn’t play high school basketball went the the option of overtime Elite has like a it’s like an alternative to high school but there are there are means that you can like enter o and maintain your college eligibility and then and and then head that way but he didn’t he you know played a couple years in in OT and then went to the G League ignite so like he’s played professional basketball the the Tyler like the ignite is like the G league and the ignite is like well the ignite was a messy program this playing against it was a pro level League NBA Style offenses NBA Style defenses NBA like NBA three-point line and all that um and you know and to shoot 36% from the NBA 3point line at 19 that that’s um you know 610 shoots 36% from three as a teenager that’s intriguing right like I I’m I think Smith probably has a higher I have a higher bankable floor for Smith but not as high of a ceiling as where so it’s like I’m I’m more intrigued by the idea of where but um if I had to like if you pick if I’m saying right now on 11 p.m. on Tuesday May 28th yeah give me like I would probably say I’m more likely to bet that Tyler Smith has has a has like a sturdier NBA career because I think he I think he does more stuff that that will quickly and easily translate and that the like even if his his weaknesses stay weak I think he can be because of the offensive skill set and the size I think he can be um he didn’t measure super big I think that’s problem for him a little bit a combine but that stuff’s maybe a little overstated um people love combine measurements if you love it you could love it but I think it’s it’s a little overstated I think he’s like a he’s undersiz five power forward type and if he can continue to improve some athletic stuff uh particularly lateral lateral uh movement on as a Defender and continues to like have the offensive gifts that he has tools that he has he’s interesting I I like him I like him at 14 I I don’t I don’t think I love either of we or Smith but I think in this particular draft you’re always going to pick someone with flaws like even maybe at seven certainly at seven the blaz are going to pick someone with flaws you’re not going to find the perfect fit at 14 you’re not you’re hoping like in the in the sort of realistic range for what you’re hoping like outcomes what you’re hoping when you’re drafting at 14 is you’re getting hoping to get an NBA player you’re hoping to get a a rotation level player that signs a second contract with the team that drafted him I think Smith and wear both have a decent chance to sign a second contract with the team that drafts them at 14 and I think that’s a reasonable outcome beyond that then you really really got it right and if either of these guys hit their ceiling like if wear hits his ceiling he’s excellent if Tyler Smith hits a ceiling he’s probably like a really long-term useful offensive big okay let’s talk about the other folks who uh joined in the uh joined in the workout I have some thoughts on Alex caraban I have some thoughts on Quinn post and some thoughts on Caleb love and I don’t know anything about Isaiah Crawford and I’ll just admit that to you now join me to hear some thoughts on the rest of the guys who are at the Trailblazers workout in that third segment why don’t [Music] you still a pass vers point guard I’m still Mike Richmond you are still listening to locked on Blazers okay Blazers six guys of the workout first two we talks about kware and Tyler Smith this is their second of several uh pre-draft workouts um the rest of the guys like Smith and wear are probably in the range at 14 You could argue 14 might be higher than they end up going but if the Blazers are interested in either of those two gentlemen 14 is probably a spot to do so spot to acquire them if you if you’re if you’re being realistic the rest of the guys are Fringe draft guys or second rounders um Isaiah Crawford a 66 Wing from from Louisiana Tech um ESPN has him 81 in the Big Board no one else has him ranked um Caleb love from Arizona a 64 guard who started at Carolina and hit one of the great shots in Carolina history to be Duke in the final four as palaban Caro um I don’t think he’s an NBA player uh and he’s not rated on any on ESPN or the ringer Raphael or Z Vini anybody’s anybody’s board like I just I don’t think he’ll probably make the league um he’ll probably play professional basketball for a long time CU he’s pretty gifted prolific um you know he’s he had he had a a very impressive late season run for Carolina he was Pack 12 player of the year last year at Arizona he’s he’s he’s been a productive college player um I don’t think he’s an NBA player the other two guys are interesting like Caleb love has physical tools to get there he’s just never had the consistency Crawford just he at least from the the scouting reports I read about him you know um kind of three and D but maybe not a good enough shooter and maybe not a really high level Defender to get there but like MBA frame NBA size um it could be you know could be one of those guys who sneaks in as an undrafted player I think that’s his most likely path the other two guys let’s start with Quinn post because I’ve talked about cariban on the show and I like him but Quinn post is a big guy from Boston College he’s 24 started Mississippi State spent the last couple Seasons at Boston College um measured a true s foot the true I’m using the word true but this I’m using correctly to mean true he measured 7 fo0 at at the combine Barefoot like a true seven-footer can shoot it like a guy who can shoot it he had 19 and 10 against Carolina in a game this year it’s kind of a nightmare to deal with he is um ESPN has him 71 in the Big Board the ringer has him 52 um he he didn’t make um rafhael only did the top 30 in his big board in May and and San Vini doesn’t have him in his in Quinn Post in his mock so like that’s that’s undrafted right 71 is undrafted 52 is there’s going to be 58 picks in the draft that’s right on the edge so his most likely path is undrafted but post is intriguing because he’s really big um and he can shoot he can shoot from he can shoot from the outside I I actually think a really like realistic NBA comp for him is 7 foot duop wath he’s not a good defensive player but he’s not bad on that end he’s and he’s bigger than reath um he’s not he not he’s horrific I think reath has struggled at the end of the year a lot on defense got to kind of kind of showed up for him that he was not a very good defensive player but post is like um he’s bigger but he has that sort of he’s mostly a shooter right like mostly AO like an outside shooter but he has that ability to attack a close out and put the ball on the ground like wreath does where it’s like oh this big dude’s on the Move um and and and like put up little push shots float shots type of thing um I think reath is probably a little better off the bounce but but post is is um he’s solid there and he’s he’s big and physical um he’s got a real like a he’s a big frame like’s he’s already 24 um he’s you know he’s probably close to what he’s going to be but I he’s interesting I I think he’s probably a a stretch for reach for either of the Blazers draft picks at 34 and 40 but as an undrafted guy I I would I would guess Quinton post is not in the NBA next year but um intriguing skill set because of his size Alex caraban a Yukon um he actually could go back to school he has until 11 59 on Wednesday so like as you’re listening to this at any moment he could declare to go back to Yukon but um and I read a report that the Blazers were his last workout before he was going to make his decision so maybe he’ll make a decision go do a bunch of other workouts heck maybe he’ll work out with the Blazers and they’ll say if you’re on the board at 34 and 40 we guarantee we draft you or something like that I’ll give him a second round guarantee and he’ll say I’ll stick in there um ESPN has him 36 on the big board the ringer had him at 54 s Vini had him drafted at 28 in his um uh in his Mock and rafhael Barlo did not have caraban in his top 30 I really like Alex carabin I really do whenever I go deeply against friend of the program Raphael Barlow’s uh scouting I always feel a little bit nervous a little bit nervous rafhael really liked Brandon Miller over scoot last year I didn’t maybe agree and he was right um kin measured 66 and a half um at the combine he can really shoot at 39 plus% from three and at at Yukon I think he has a lot of NBA skills he reminds me watching him of how I felt about haime hakz when I watched haime at UCLA um you if you recall last year it’s like haime hakz was initially mocked mostly as a second round guy and I was like I feel really comfortable I said on the show go check the tape that I feel really comfortable at Hae haakas being a pro even if he’s a second rounder just because I’ve seen him play so many times he does so many things that it’s like he can do that the footwork and the touch the physicality right and with caraban it’s the it’s the Myriad skills like he’s you know six 67 plus in shoes six six and a half measured Barefoot so like he’s he’s a he’s like a bigger Wing he can dribble like he can handle the ball he can pass he could shoot it the knock on him is that he’s just not an NBA athlete like I think is I think if he was an NBA athlete he would be like a top 20 pick in this draft but it’s just he might not have the lateral quickness or the strength to like be an NBA wing and like sure that that could that certainly is is the reason that he’s going to fall and like I think he’s in Target for the Blazers at 34 or 40 like one of their second round picks I absolutely but I feel really good about Alex carbin being a pro because I think someone his build his size who can dribble pass and shoot is like what teams want certainly like would he play in the playoffs is like kind of a way people like to do this no no no right like no at you know he’s 22 years old he would not um tomorrow he would not play in the I guess there’s no games tomorrow on uh like tomorrow as you’re listening to this Thursday he would not play in the freaking Western Conference Finals like he would not appear in that game um but the blazes aren’t doing that right they’re trying to develop a team um I kind of I I I’m a cariban Believer as a second round guy I would I would be hyped I don’t know hyped is the wrong word I I am I am confident that he’s an NBA player am I confident that he’s a like a high level NBA starter no but I’m confident that like when I watch him when I watch him play for the last couple years like yeah that dude could play in the pros he has size ball handling passing shooting bigger wings that can dribble pass and shoot are valuable in the NBA I think Alex carban is that might get picked on a little bit with his physicality but he also might just be totally fine it’s intrigu an intriguing little group on on a Tuesday Blazer going to have another workout later this week uh look for Friday’s show hint hint uh to be a recap of that next workout uh I’m into wear I’m intrigued by Smith I’m really intrigued by Alex carbin as the second rounder um I think Quinton post is a name to know in the undrafted world and I hope um whatever happens next with Isaiah Crawford and Caleb love they get to play professional basketball for a long time that’s going to do it for today’s show six players some thoughts a little a little podcast for you on a Wednesday if you made it this far into the program do me a favor tell a friend tell a friend that’s all people find out about podcast is that they hear from their friends you can you know subscribe like and review wherever you listen to it um if if you are listening to a service that allows for for reviews give a five star review to your boy if you made it this far you can’t there’s no other review than you can give me other than a five star those are the rules uh but like what I what I actually want you to do I don’t really care about reviews what I actually want you to do is go tell a friend if you have someone in your life that enjoys the Portland Trailblazers and you think might be into the ramp up to the draft tell them to check out locked on Blazers available wherever they get podcasts and all also on YouTube come back for tomorrow’s show it’s what we do 5 days a week I appreciate you listening I’ll talk to you soon
