a cold the Los Angeles Clippers have been one of the most tragic teams in the entire NBA whether it’s the fact that they decided to draft Michael olaa candy number one overall in a draft that featured Antoine Jameson Vince Carter Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce the fact that they decided to trade Baron Davis and the pick that would become Kyrie Irving to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Mo Williams the fact that they had one of the most exciting teams to watch in the 2010s but would always get injured in the playoffs or more recently when they have one of the most exciting teams to watch in the 2020s but would always get injured in the playoffs during the 2019 off season the Clippers were forced into a very difficult decision you see at this point they came off of a very impressive season where they really pushed the Golden State Warriors to their limit in the first round of the 2019 playoffs there weren’t any stars on this roster but you had a budding star in sheay gilis Alexander you had mon Tres herrold Lou Williams Danilo ginari all coached by a respected coach at the time in Doc Rivers the Clippers were essentially looked at kind of the way you’re looking at the OKC Thunder now minus the treasure chest of draft picks that they had they were trending upward they had good role players and a nice blend of Youth and if they added a star to the mix then for all you know this could be one of the top teams in the west so the Los Angeles Clippers decided to call up kawh Leonard been very vocal about the fact that he wanted to return to his home state of California kawh Leonard said that he would only join the Los Angeles Clippers if they traded for Paul George unfortunately for the Clippers Paul George was on a team whose general manager was known for being a mastermind when it came to getting maximum value for his players and this trade was one of the few times we’ve ever seen an NBA history where a team that was consistently in playoff contention the OKC Thunder decided to opt for a build instead because the offer was just way too good to refuse the Clippers traded sheay gilgas Alexander danila galinari Miami’s 2021 unprotected first round pick which would turn into Trey man the Clippers 2022 unprotected first round pick which turned into jayen Williams 2023 pick swap Clippers 2024 unprotected first the Heats protected 2025 first the 2025 pick Swap and probably the most obscene of all is the Clippers 20 26 unprotected first round pick this is the first time you were seeing trades like this happen back then you would see teams trade for picks that were coming up relatively soon Sam pry understood Clippers were very likely to stink in the 2026 season and he wanted to make sure that he had their pick for that year but ultimately the Clippers became one of the most exciting teams in the entire West I mean the Los Angeles Lakers traded for Anthony Davis signed Danny Green finally put together a good team around LeBron James and the Clippers were still favored against them and it wasn’t that crazy of a take that year many fans believe that if the Clippers and the Lakers were to meet each other in a playoff series and the Clippers blend of two-way stars and their defensive minded coach that has won a championship before would easily overpowered the Lakers unfortunately we would never get to see the Battle of Los Angeles playoff series that fans have been clamoring for in year 1 pandemic P would strike in the playoff bubble the Clippers would lose a 3 to1 Series lead to the Denver Nuggets and a little did they know that would be the last time that both kawii Leonard and Paul George would be healthy in the playoffs in the 2021 playoffs the Clippers finished fourth in the west but Kawhi Leonard would get hurt the Clippers would lose to the eventual Western Conference Champion Phoenix Suns in 2022 the Clippers would finish eighth in the west kawhai would get injured again and they would make the play in tournament but they wouldn’t make the playoffs but instead we got this cool meme from Pat Bev in 2022 to 2023 both kawhai and PG would suffer injuries so this opted the Clippers to go all in they clearly understood that they needed another star to help Paul George and Kawhi Leonard and no Russell Westbrook on a veteran minimum contract didn’t count they decided to gut out the rest of their depth and trade for James Harden and the result was well they lost in the first round once again at this point there are a lot of questions surrounding the Clippers the decision on Kawhi Leonard was already made the Clippers decided to sign him to a 3year 100 $ 52 million contract extension and that’s where things got a little interesting because upon kawii Leonard signing the contract extension fans were speculating whether or not the Clippers would be able to bring back Paul George and Paul George seemed to have taken significantly more time in making his decision you have to think of this from Paul George’s perspective at this point you’ve been on the Los Angeles Clippers since the 2019 season each and every year things have gotten worse and worse you consistently make it to the playoffs you’re co-star is always injured and the western conference is getting deeper and deeper at this point a fully healthy Clippers team is probably a first round exit next year and that’s nothing against the Los Angeles Clippers but with the emergence of the Dallas Mavericks finally figuring it out the Minnesota Timberwolves being a young upand cominging team the Denver Nuggets being a constant superpower the OKC Thunder being bound to take the next step next year and that’s before we discuss teams that could potentially figure it out in the off season what about the Warriors what about the Pelicans who are primed to trade Brandon Ingram and try to get Zion more help what about the Los Angeles Lakers when they draft bronny James okay all right that that’s probably not going to do anything but the Houston Rockets were on a huge winning streak at the end of the season even the teams that aren’t in the playoff picture are primed to make a huge jump and a leap over the Los Angeles Clippers and their gang of stars in their mid-30s so if you’re Paul George why would you stay there maybe Paul George really likes Los Angeles but the problem is is Los Angeles doesn’t seem to be sharing the love with Paul George you see the Clippers are currently unwilling to offer Paul George more than they gave Kawhi Leonard which is $152.3 million a team like the Philadelphia 76ers could give Paul George a 4-year $212 million contract extension when you consider how much Paul George would be saving on taxes as well in Philadelphia as opposed to Los Angeles and the fact that he would get to be playing in a significantly weaker division no offense Celtic fans but there are plenty of memes of how easy it was for the Celtics to make it into the NBA Finals I mean even if these players weren’t injured I still think that the Celtics could have made it to the NBA finals and when you consider the fact that Jimmy Butler is getting older the Milwaukee Bucks are a little shaky to say the least the only main competition that this Philadelphia 76ers would have to make it to the finals would be the Boston Celtics so you could make more money your competition would be significantly easier the style of basketball you would play in Philadelphia would be significantly better I mean Kawhi Leonard won a championship with the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and on top of that they could pay you way more and Kenya Martin agrees how do you think it’s a bad idea you said it this experiment has been going on for six years now with two older guys it’s not going to work like they came here together they made the decision one wanted the one to come here the guy was in Oklahoma City minding his business on the floor it hasn’t worked for whatever reason whether it’s injury whether it’s timing whether it’s it just hasn’t worked I’m Paul I’m looking for I can stay in LA but I’m looking for a different situation if I’m Paul George so what’s the plan if the Clippers lose Paul George well they could potentially go after Demar D rozan but obviously that would be a sizable downgrade now the Clippers understanding that it could all completely fall apart for them jumped quickly to make sure that they could secure their head coach because tyo was in rumors and some people were speculating that he could potentially join the Los Angeles Lakers but that didn’t end up happening he got a huge 5year $7 million contract according to Shams Tanna which by the way incredible contract for an incredible coach who clearly is opting for contract stability and security I’m assuming the Clippers want to make tyo their Eric spola and I applaud tyo for taking the deal I think he’s an incredible head coach that has just had some really bad luck over the past couple of years each and every year when the Clippers lost in the playoffs I never said this is because tyou was being out coached I usually said this is because the Clippers were injured at the worst time possible but there are a lot of questions about the future of this team I mean how do you plan on keeping Paul George and James Harden and how are you expecting them to take discounts when you’re in a state that’s going to be taxed significantly more when you’re on a team that doesn’t have as much of a chance to compete in a much more competitive conference for now this is a win for the clippers but even if they get their dream scenario of retaining Paul Paul George and James Harden and everybody comes back for another year even if this whole team is fully healthy do you think this will be enough to make it to the NBA finals
