Evan Sidery (@esidery) The Trail Blazers, Grizzlies and Bulls are all interested in potentially trading up for Donovan Clingan, per @DraftExpress Clingan’s perimeter shooting has been very impressive in private workout settings.

Wonder what picks/package it would take. I would assume something with the Rockets?

I feel like Clingan would be fine but trading up for him would be a mistake. I assume it would be something like #7 and #14 for #3 from Houston, and I would rather have two cracks at the draft than one. Perhaps they would be interested in Brogdon + #7 for #3 (if we could somehow do Brogdon and #14 for #3 that would be great but I doubt Houston goes for that).

I do think it is likely we do not make all of our picks this year, considering adding 4 rookies would be kinda crazy to the current roster, but I also think Clingan isn’t the kind of player we should push all our chips in for

Please be a smokescreen. Trading up to land clingan? A big man with injury issues? No thanks

I know that Clingan doesn’t likely have the upside that a lot of the rumored wings might have, but I could talk myself into leaving the draft with perhaps a better shooting, more athletic Steven Adams type. I think he has better pick and roll defensive ability than Adams as well.

Giving Scoot and Shaedon a really solid screen setter and vertical threat in the pick and roll could certainly be helpful. It does probably mean that you likely have to move off of RWIII (or I suppose Ayton if the price is right).

Trading up for aytons backup would be a mistake, let alone wasting a top 10 on him. Trading up to draft another player I’m open to, but Clingan doesn’t make sense to me.

  5. I’ve been thinking a bit deeper about my take on Clingan recently… I know for a lot of people he might be boring, but he might also just straight up be the responsible pick to make.

We all want to swing for the fences on upside to give us a chance to land a star…but its very possible that there just isnt a good swing to take in this draft. At least not in the high to mid lotto. Maybe we are trying to squint way too hard to project upside onto guys like Matas or Salaun when they are prospects we would see as huge red flags in other drafts.

Maybe the smart move in this weaker draft is to take the high IQ 7’2 Center who plays great pick and roll defense, sets hard screens, has passing chops and was a champion in college.

He wasn’t a shooter in college, why do teams care if he can cash a bunch of wide open threes in a high school gym in the offseason?

Very little I’ve seen has suggested he won’t be available at #7

I dont like it. I like Clingan but not at that cost, and honestly id rather take a swing on the other centers in this draft.

Plus he did not test well in the combine.

I doubt the blazers are trading up for him. Their guy is Cody Williams. If Clingan is available at 7 they may take him if they think Williams will still be available at 14.

If be fine with him at #7, but only if we get a large wing at #14.

Trading up in a weak draft for a center with injury concerns who played low minutes in college when there’s a good chance he’ll be there at #7, anyway, would certainly be a choice

We don’t need our top draft pick to be a backup center. No thank you.

  13. Clingan is so slow though. Major liability on defense. Edey would be a much better choice with his elite speed for the size.
