Could the Trail Blazers Trade Up in the NBA Draft to Land Donovan Clingan?
in today’s show are the Blazers really interested in trading up to get big man Donovan kinging is that even a good idea welcome to lock down Blazers let’s get into it you are locked on Trailblazers you each and every weekday Monday through Friday so make it a part of your daily routine tell your friends to do the same make it your first listen is lock on Blazers your team every day in today’s show we’re talking NBA draft couple new mock drafts from the folks in the no pop today including or the last week and we’re talking about them today you’re listening to uh Monday June 3rd show you made it to June it’s draft month we’re a little over 3 weeks away from the NBA Draft so we will continue to pour forward talking draft stuff including in today’s episode there is some reporting that the Blazers are among the teams interested in trading up for Yukon big man Donovan Kling and I want to talk about kingan I want to talk about trading up and all of the sort of implications of that in uh the first couple segments and then I want to talk about uh the Blazers type they they seem to have a type of player that they covet which means when you’re thinking about who’s making these prognostication predictions you could kind of ask yourself does this player fit what they typically do it’s maybe not a perfect formula but I think it’s worth considering because if you’re listening to this you’re a big fan of the Blazers you’re considering them all the time so uh let’s kind of put all of the tea reading details we can out on the table Le let’s start with this mock draft you know um start with ESPN the the ESPN Jonathan javone and Jeremy W released Mo draft that came out on Friday May 31st um it’s it is sort of the latest Intel and uh as I mentioned before I think ESPN is last year they were the they were the best at predicting all of the they got nine out of the top 10 picks right they’ve been um with woo and Javon they got two people who’ve been doing this a long time and um woo for Sports Illustrated forever javone for Draft Express and and now for ESPN for a long time like just just two veterans in the game and people with a bunch of League Intel they’re talking to every team in the league they’re they are plugged in and they get this stuff correct and I think other draft prognosticators are maybe um can offer a ton of value because they’ll say like maybe their draft won’t be as accurate like to the pick but they’ll say like this player’s better like I think this player’s better right and and you can get sort of the skill set maybe evaluators but in terms of like what teams are going to do Intel I don’t think that there’s a better service right now than ESPN um it’s behind the pay wall choose with your own adventure if you want to do that um this podcast is free and I’ll bring a little bit of it outside of the pay wall for you um uh is that the service I’m offering today no I’m trying to offer a little more little more insight a little more sort of nuance into the Blazers thinking but in this draft from from ESPN that’s come out the Blazers are taking Donovan kingan at 7 and Cody Williams at 14 we’ll talk about both of those uh both of those guys in today’s show a little bit but within this um well let’s talk about kingan first of all though at at taking him at seven I think it’s totally fine I I am I don’t think I’m super enamored with him I kind of struggle to see where he’s like I I kind of I’m curious about his offensive upside I think he’s going to be a really good defensive player in the NBA he’s gigantic he measured 71 and 34 in at the combine in socks it’s basically 72 Barefoot like he’s truly 7 foot three a 97 standing reach I don’t I don’t think I like personally as like this is Mike Richmond talking like I don’t think I care about much of the agility and physical measuring like I don’t think I care about Max vertical jump you know like um the Blazers have had guys who have really excelled in that spot uh Pat conon and Keon Johnson over the last handful of years and like Keon Johnson couldn’t put it together as a basketball player and Pat conon was never like this he’s a really good athlete but it wasn’t because he could jump up to 15t in the air right like he’s just like athletic um and he was like a useful basketball player because he’s athletic um like I don’t think I care about vertical jump stuff I certainly don’t care about the cone like the the the cone drills and it’s just like I’d rather just watch someone play basketball than like think that the cone drills are meaningful I don’t think I care at all about the three quarters Court Sprint um in fact John Hollinger reported that the that the the way that they did the Sprint measurements this year something was wonky because like 15 guys set one of the fastest three qus court Sprints of all time compared to like the ESPN’s long-term database so it’s like something was was different so it’s maybe good for comparing this guy was slower than this guy in 2024 but probably not useful for comparing it back years like and even without that like wonky Hollander reporting and then what the holl reporting about the wony it’s like I don’t think I care period about the physical measurements you could just watch these dudes play basketball maybe for guys you haven’t seen at all it matters maybe when you’re deciding between two very similar prospects it matters but like Beyond just like size and how long arms are um I I think it’s more meaningful to watch them play and when I watch Donovan kingan play I think he can be an impactful defensive player I don’t think he’s going to be this like crazy switch heavy you know scheme versatile monster right um I think he’s going to be a a giant person who can clog the paint and the most valuable thing to do in the NBA still is to prevent layups like that that that really is it um you know there’s there’s a lot of nerd stuff about whether you can even prevent teams from shooting threes and what quality threes look like in the modern NBA and all of those things but like it Still Remains the most valuable to stop guys from shooting at The Rim see the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals um like and I think kingan will have value there I’m I’m a little I’m a little hesitant to figure out where his offensive upside is in addition to not really caring about the um uh the sort of agility testing physical testing at the combine um there’s some reporting that kingan has been shooting well in private workouts and behind the scenes he’s impressed some teams with with his with his shooting and private workouts cool cool that’s an empty gym baby like um that is not a place where I would put much stock into it and I don’t think NBA teams do like it’s impossible not to like have some bias when a dude just burns down the Nets right but I don’t think NBA teams do I’m old enough to remember e on Leon lighting up that chair like I I some you know in open in in one on none empty gym workouts professional athletes can sometimes have really nice days wouldn’t like kingan’s not was didn’t shoot very well from from the free throw line if he becomes like an okay standstill three-point shooter that’s like credit to him for improving there but I’m just I I personally will not put any stock into like the reports that he shot well in a workout I I do not care NBA teams choose own adventure um at seven I think he’s fine um you know this would be the Blazers drafting a player who couldn’t start because they already have DeAndre at Center clingan’s 20 like and he’s going to be 20 on on on opening nights um I don’t I think it’s okay I think it’s okay if you draft a player that can’t play right away um deand Dayton’s under contract for two more seasons I have I’ll be curious to see whether deand drton signs another contract with the Blazers if I had to pick right now I bet he wouldn’t I think it’s okay to just like fill out the long-term a long-term solution if the short-term solution is like kingan’s not going to play that much also he’s playing like 20 minutes a game in college he’s not going to be a 35 minute a night a guy that’s a rookie in the NBA he might only be able to give you 20 minutes like physically until he sort of um figures out that part of his game and maybe he’s never a big minute guy and he’s always at half the game 24 to 28 minute type of Center I mean Yousef nkit is kind of that right um giant sometimes giant guys just like can’t like they just it’s it’s not it’s not where they’re going to have value is playing that much I think zachie is a different breed he was playing 40 minutes a night in college right like that’s what makes him special perhaps so clinging at seven I think I have no problem with I wouldn’t be super excited I don’t see like a Superstar there but you’re not really at at seven in any given draft you’re hoping to get an NBA starter and not and then if you get beyond that you did really well um the thing is though is that the reporting is not just that the Blazers would be interested in blaz in in clinging at seven in fact in the ESPN right up on their mock they said the Blazers quote surely would be ecstatic if if if kingan felt a seven surely be ecstatic is really suggest that the Blazers like Donovan cling and so much so that the reporting from ESPN is that the Blazers are among the teams that would consider trading up to get Donovan kingan at three uh okay I’m comfortable with kinging at at seven right I think that’s fine again I wouldn’t be super super duper excited I’d probably be more excited about like any of the other of the Wings just because I think they have more upside although kingan probably has a much higher floor than a couple of those guys um three seems like a lot let’s talk about what trading up for three would look like and what other teams are are reportedly interested in chasing Kling Kong in this draft join me in that uh Second segment won’t you uh and which I think has some strong predictive power about this time last year the BL the ESPN mock draft had the Blazers taking scoot Henderson and and Chris Murray was actually released on June 6 2023 but basically the same time um the Blazers ended up picking about a month later scoot Henderson and Chris Murray I would say ESPN is worth paying attention to more on that in a moment but in the within that article within the mock there’s some reporting that the Blazers are among the teams that are that are interested in trading up for Donovan kingan among those teams the quote the chatter around the league that team such as Portland Memphis and Chicago would be willing to move up Memphis makes total sense to me right they just traded um uh they they just traded stevenh Adams they’re going to be good with with jiren Jackson Jr playing a lot of Center and Brandon Clark playing up up front but like they’re like a team that fancies themselves like Championship level good when the season starts assuming that they’re healthy and they have they need front Court depbt and Clingan is probably he’s you know he’s generally speaking I think everyone has their own opinions but generally speaking from most mock drafts and pro prognosticators I’ve seen kingan is the is the number one like uh true big that would be available after alexar right you you get SAR and then it’s and then um a bunch of wings and guards and kinging in that mix is is like the the true big that’s in that mix Memphis makes total sense I’m not surprised they’re interested Chicago I never know what the Bulls are doing who knows go listen to lockdown Bulls maybe Hayes has it figured out um but like for the Blazers it makes sense they need to add Talent they need some front Court depth um you know I think folks are saying like the Blazers have front Corp depth they have duop reath and they have Rob Williams Rob Williams is like if if he can stay healthy he’s very good at basketball the if is big enough that I don’t think you can Bank on it right I don’t think I don’t think you can say he I’m not worried because Rob William is going to be healthy I know it like maybe maybe and if he is that’s a that’s a cool problem to have cuz he’s going to be a good basketall player um two upath is fun easy to root for I like him uh but I don’t think you can make any roster decisions based on the sort of of doop wreath’s inclusion on the roster I just that would be to me inappropriate particularly at seven you can maybe make some second round picks based on like yeah well we got already got do up wreath like I don’t think at like the seventh pick in the draft or even the third pick in the draft you could consider it the Blazers trading up for kingan in in a in a sort of very broad roster sense I think makes sense the problem for me is I don’t I don’t know if I love using assets to move up in this draft in fact on this very podcast I did a mo I did a sort of mock trade discussion with Jackson Gatlin of locked on rockets and uh his his pitch to me was Malcolm brogen and seven to trade up for three and the and the salary relief to make it work and it would be Jack Londale and Jeff Green in our in our fake trade and we ended up not agreeing to it that’s how that podcast ended it’s like I’m not that into that deal I was trying to trade 14 and and brogs and so like depending on what it is I just don’t think I don’t think highly enough of kingan’s upside to be personally excited about using other trade chips to jump up to three the Blazers know more than me right and if they do it and it works out then like who am I right I I I don’t I’m just a person with opinions in a microphone right um and uh but for me that is not super appealing but I think equally telling is that there are more teams in the top of the draft the reporting suggests that there are several teams in the top of the draft specifically the Houston Rockets and this just isn’t from ESPN but I’ve read this a couple other places including Yahoo sports um it’s like there are team teams at the top of the draft outside of the outside of one it’s outside of Atlanta are would consider trading back because there’s value to be gained in a wideopen draft in trading back if you know if you say we don’t like anyone enough to spend at two and if we trade back we can get to like nine and or in case for the Blazer seven and something else we might do it particularly the rockets that I think are aiming to be competitive and don’t have their their own they don’t have control of their own future draft pick so they would rather be mediocre to good than than like truly bad because tanking doesn’t do it for them they’ll let the uh Nets tank on their own on their behalf like they did this year so like um you know if if Detroit with with newly minted GM uh and president basketball operations I think is his title actually TR and langon getting you know in control if they’re interested in trading out that’s curious if uh San Antonio that has two picks in the lottery maybe if they’re willing to trade out to four if they get the right the right deal that’s curious if the rockets at three with their goals and the reporting from ESPN has said the Rockets are expected to field a lot of offers for the trade if they’re expect like three if three out of the five teams in the top five in this draft are like we would love to move back I think that’s that’s not like maybe like a red flag but that’s a caution flag right that’s enough to be like huh why why does everyone feel that way and I I think that’s that’s telling uh to some extent I wouldn’t hate it I wouldn’t hate it for the Blazers to like I wouldn’t be like no why did they do it if they trade up to three but I think it’s worth flagging to say like if a bunch of teams are looking to bail to trade back in the draft or out altogether in the Rockets case like is it the best use of assets I I can’t call it like I don’t I don’t have enough breath of the draft itself to say like with certainty but in my personal opinion it doesn’t appeal to me that much I don’t know if like the prevailing logic that you’d rather have two cracks at seven and 14 is better than one at three I think broadly speaking that’s probably correct that’s probably the correct logic but if you really like someone at three like if the Blazers say like Donovan kingan is going to be you know an elite defensive player for 10 years in the league he is the he is going to be you know because of his he’s a pretty good passer on offense maybe doesn’t have a lot of shooting range but pretty good passer so could be set big screens and make decisions as a passer he’s a really has good defensive feel with enough scheme versatility and enough just like being a giant person um that we think he can be in defensive anchor then maybe they they do it and it’s worth it but I think for me in general I’m a little I’m hesitant about it but it’s telling that there are other teams Portland Memphis Chicago that would be interested here’s the other thing this is lying season this is the season to lie are those teams deeply invested in trading up or is it value a able to say the Donovan kingan camp or even the Houston Rockets to say oh yeah we got offers baby we got offers we’re calling all around we’re calling around Chicago’s blowing up our phone so’s Portland so’s so’s Memphis and even if it’s like even if there’s some truth we have had conversations with Portland we have had conversations with Memphis or we’ve had proxy conversations with with those connected like this is the season this is the time over the next three weeks to drive up the perceived interest in either a pick itself or a prospect itself from Team say if if you want them you better trade up or you know if you don’t make us a competitive offer for three we’ve got other offers on the table this is the season to lie right um I’m not suggesting that this is like itself a whole cloth lie but if there there if there’s ever a time for misinformation this is the best time this is the time that you most often see things that are like how you have to question how true is that in addition and I don’t like unpacking this I think it’s a little bit UNC so I’m I’m probably not going to do this again on the show but I’m going to do it here quickly um I mentioned in the previous episode talking about the ESPN mock that like Jonathan javone worked with blazers assistant GM Mike schmidtz for like a decade right more than a decade I think 12 years they work together so like when the when since schmidtz has taken over ESPN has had strong strongly accurate drafts in terms of what the Blazers are going to do in decision- making and it’s like I had a listener reach out to me and I’ll keep them anonymous because I think it was a fair question and just like not particularly for the show but it was like why would what’s the value in in the Blazers like um telegraphing to ESPN what they’re going to do and I don’t read it like that necessarily I read it like this schmidtz knows what the Blazers decision- making is and part of his decision making you know and is a big you know is one of the biggest voices in the room is as sort of like the scouting guy in the front office right um Cronin has worked in that role before and I’m sure they work together to some extent but like Schmitz and Cronin together know what they’re going to do um and the there is value in them learning from ESPN what other teams are going to do this team team ESPN got nine out of the top 10 picks correct last year they talked to everyone in the league that sort of information exchange has value so I’m not saying that like ESPN is just getting whole cloth the Blazers plan and then they’re going to print it on their website what I’m saying is that there is some ESPN has had some strongly accurate predictions mock drafts even as much as a month out from the draft because they’re have a Rel they probably have a relationship with the Blazers every but they have relationship with every team uh and there’s also value when the Blazers like the two-way street in hey what is Houston going to do what is Charlotte going to do what is San Antonio going to do like there’s value there and that’s like why if you if you listen closely to the show the term I often use is news Brokers not necessarily news Breakers but news Brokers they are brokering news that’s like it’s how it works um there is some there is an art to being someone who gets inside Intel and some of that art is that you got to be a ble to have value to the people you are talking to um that’s kind of how it works I’m not going to I’m not going to unpack this anymore so uh tell your friends it was the June 3D episode where I kind of explained how how sometimes this would be valuable on both ends okay um speaking of ESPN’s predictive power at 14 they’ve got the Blazers taking Cody Williams and he like fits a profile right I want to talk about that and another draft from Bleacher Report and kind of how um the Blazers have typically done business and how it can give you a sense of how they might do business in the future join me in that third segment won’t you first though I want to tell you about eBay Motors eBay Motors knows three things passion Drive patience it’s the formula for winning guaranteed fit only available to us custom [Music] still a pass first point guard I’m still Mike Richmond you are still listening to lock on Blazers ESPN’s got Donovan kinging at seven they got Cody Williams going at 14 early on in the college season I was pretty into Cody Williams as like uh the idea of him as a player like he’s um he’s bigger he’s measured six six and a half in in in socks of the combine with an 87 standing reach and a 71 wingspan he’s tall you know six7 with long arms that’s intriguing and the idea was that he was had some off ball creation abilities and some defensive versatility he didn’t have a monster Collegiate season like if you just look at his numbers 11.9 points three boards 1. six assists that doesn’t jump off the page shot 55% from the floor overall 41.5% from three and 71% from the free throw line but he only took 41 three-pointers in 24 games he’s like he’s not quite taking two a night second 1.7 a night in 24 games and like when I watched him when I sort of got in into being more plugged into the draft stuff I’m not like a a deep college basketball guy but I was was like I’m going to do it for the show so I watched some late season Buffalo games uh Colorado games go Buffs but like he just wasn’t very assertive and that seems to be the knock on him right is that with two other uh NBA hopefuls Tristan D Silva and and KJ Simpson on the team particularly Simpson the point guard it’s like Cody whims just kind of getting in where he fits in and the lack of assertiveness particularly it showed up to me I was like he like what is he doing he hasn’t touched the ball in four and a half minutes or something like that and again like I’m not watching a ton a ton a ton of his minutes I’m not watching every game by any means I’m watching parts of four games I two full games and parts of others I think is how many I watched um I don’t have it charted but I think that’s my memory of it um like I wasn’t super into it but I’ll tell you what Cody Williams fits the Blazers draft profile to a T and if he’s there at 14 totally reasonable upside if the Blazer came away from the draft as ESPN has it penciled right now with kingan and then Williams kingan at seven and Williams at 14 I think that’d be a pretty decent Hall this draft is in perfect the chances that both of those dudes turn in the NBA starter seems relatively unlikely just because this draft is supposedly not that right it’s a role player draft but Williams has some upside and he really fits the Blazers profile who have they taken recently like who have they sort of targeted right scoot uh to some extent like a smaller the a you know a point guard point guard size big for a point guard physically but like point guard size but otherwise it’s been these sort of high upside longer wings uh Jabari Walker I think Chris Murray fits this profile Al though he’s a little bit older um toar kamaro who who they targeted Ryan ruper is like this sort of they have a type right like um maybe not fully filled out in terms of like productive at the moment but guys who are high upside with on Wing players with size that has been the player that they have they have typically um you know typically pursued and Joe Cronin right when he was hired he he was on the record I believe it was it I know was in a story in the Athletics saying that like he prefers the sort of higher upside swings to the sure thing that’s why when I read Jonathan W’s um mock draft in which he has the Blazers taking uh donov or excuse me Dalton connect at seven I think like connect is interesting and I I think more the more I have leaned into sort of um watching some scouting reports shout out to my dude ho hoop intellect Keandre does great work and he has a great scouting report on D connect on his YouTube page but like I’m more into connect than I was but he doesn’t and like even outside of my own personal opinion I probably would lean Williams myself but like um but I think Williams just fits what the Blazers have pursued more recently and when you’re thinking about like the sort of like I said like I think ESPN has more predictive power and I think some mock are more valuable for like who’s actually good who who they should take as opposed to who they will take and I think um thinking about both of those things is really important this time of year if you’re a fan because it’s like um what they might do and what you think they should do don’t always align I think it’s interesting to kind of see see if there’s ever an intersection between those things and not just um defer to oh I bet I bet they’ll figure it out because teams don’t figure it out all the time but like connect in just terms of productivity like this dude scored it’s incredibly good prior to transferring to Tennessee then he transfers to the you know at lower levels then he transfers to Tennessee and it’s like he’s a player the year in the AC in the secc he’s scoring 21 points per game he shot 39% from three taking five and a half shots a night he made 93 threes in in his in his last season in college he made 93 threes 93 Cody Williams took 41 he made more than twice as Cody Williams took D connect almost attempted 200 more threes in college than Williams 234 compared to 41 this last season excuse me not total College last season 234 attempts from three compared to just 41 for for Williams uh conects played 50% more games played 36 as opposed to 24 but still like okay take take out 60 of those attempts he’s still taking like 100 more uh threes than than than uh than Williams in the same number of games um I think that has an appeal right Dalton connects uh bleach reports John wasman has BL is taking kle where at 14 in case you’re curious but I think in general like talking about Cody Williams he fits the profile um I think connect has a reasonable bankable skill set because I think he’s good athlete and I think he can shoot um and I think he’ll be generally you know he me he measured big enough 65 and a half of the combine that I think like even if he’s a bad Defender he won’t be awful just because Size Matters bit and if even if he’s like always a negative Defender um bigger guys you know 66 you can kind of fit bigger guys into into defensive schemes just size alone if you stand in the right spot you’ll be okay um although he has some there’s questions more about his off ball defense and his on ball defense for the most part from what I have read um but Williams a lot less productive doesn’t pop on film the same way that like you watch even just don’t connects highlights it’s like dang he does a lot of stuff like he can he can score off the bounce he’s a really good shooter um like um as a catch and shoot guy he can he’s an athlet like downhill straight line athlete like that he really easy to talk yourself into connect if you’re just watching like YouTube highlights versus Williams YouTube highlights but what the Blazers have typically done is guys that maybe aren’t as don’t have as sort of sexy a production level um although Chris Murray is the um is maybe the the exception that proves the rule or maybe he’s the he shows you that at a certain point in the draft the Blazers will just say hey we value this player and we don’t care about whether our what our type is but I think Cody Williams fits a type I wouldn’t be surprised if Cody Williams got drafted at seven because he fits a type um I think bazis and Ron Holland also fit that as well but Cody Williams has some shooting chops like if you get him to be more assertive he has shown to be more productive in terms of just making shots I I’ll be it on very low volume 17 of 41 in in one season at college but has some pull-up shooting uh chops as well and some defensive versatility and a guy who profiles as a long Wing that has defensive versatility and can shoot a little bit is like I would say that is as much a like Blazers Z pick as you could possibly imagine now Williams just fits the Blazers profile and when you’re thinking about this moving forward um I’m not saying he’s a lock and he’s absolutely going to be there but um among the players that are likely to be available particularly that 14 spot and I think Williams could fall that far although they might he might he could rise as well we’ll see over the next month um I think Williams seems to be the player that is the most the most joke Cronin front officy type player of that that will be available um maybe tan Salah is actually um even more so Sal but in terms of the sort of American basketball players um American college basketball players excuse me um he he fits it like I said um I’m probably more I’ve probably leaned more into being like I’m okay with Donovan connect or excuse me D connect um I got Donovan Clinging On the brain I’m okay with d connects but I think in terms of what I think the blaze would be more likely to do I think Cody Williams M much much much much more likely in terms of that um that’s going to do it for today’s show tomorrow’s show is going to be a fun one do not miss it um Keith Smith spot rck and the front office NBA show is going to join the program we’re going to talk about the Blazers finances this summer and how they should appro approach the offseason with the roster they have and the moves that are available for them to make that’s what we do I’m trying to nail down some other um as promised on Friday show nailed down some other interviews for this week um so what we do 5 days a week R get Podcast and also on YouTube I appreciate you listening tell your friends about the podcast I’ll talk to you soon [Music]
The Trail Blazers are among the teams reportedly interested in trading up in the draft to select UConn big man Donovan Clingan. Is that a good idea? Plus, the Blazers absolutely have a type, and that might inform your draft predictions.

I would rather move back to Memphis or Chicago picks to save money get and extra pick
You said it, Mike. Edey is special. Is Clingan? His health is a concern. Eday will make every team that passes him by regret it. Will Clingan? These are all good questions. I have Edey rated higher.
Not only No but Hell No. If Edey is availabke he is 7'4 with a soft touch and can play D by simply standing there, Clingon is a wasted pick.
I would give Washington all 4 of our picks to get the 2nd pick.
Donovan Clingan is Joel przybilla
