their practice facility we’re also going to talk about Tan Salon who seems to be rising up the draft boards a once late loty Target for the Blazers is probably going to be there at the at the latest at 7even if they want him they’re going to have to chase him then we’ll talk a little about some new mock drafts that released and the consensus or lack thereof that is building in the league uh before we get too deep into it apologies this one is coming out a little bit later life gets in the way sometimes typically this is in your feed first thing in the morning it’s not it’s in your feet a little bit later in the morning uh you’re listening to Wednesday June 5th show I appreciate you sorry I’m a human with stuff going on but nonetheless you’re going to get your five shows this week so let let us let us move forward let’s start with the draft workouts and then we’ll talk tan Salam uh the Blazers hosted six new new to them six prospects in in their practice facility for the fourth pre-draft workout of the offseason uh danis Jenkins I believe is disis Jenkins when I looked up the pronunciation from St John’s a 64 guard Dylan Jones a 65 Wing guard type from Weber State Spencer Jones out of Stanford a 67 forward Jared McCain 62 guard out of Duke Noah penda uh playing in the French B League a 64 guard who’s 19 years old and arml trior a forward a 68 forward also playing in the French league for Mets 92 a 21-year-old 68 forward um I want to focus on two guys here that are in the Blazers sort of draft range Jenkins from St John’s uh and Spencer Jones from Stanford not rated by any of the services that I quickly scan these are these are like Fringe Fringe draft guys if they make the draft at all or maybe potential signing somewhere else down the line for the G League or or or or or into the future um no penda I think is is interesting right he’s he’s a 19-year-old a French 19-year-old teenager uh but he is not raid by any of the services and arml trior is ESPN has him as 72nd on their board which is obviously outside of the draft there only be 58 picks in the draft but like he’s probably Fringe late draft type of guy as well but Dylan Jones of Weber State and Jared McCain of Duke are two guys who are very squarely going to be they’re going to be hear their names called on draft night uh Dylan Jones likely a second day guy but um now the draft is two days um and the second day like in the middle of the afternoon what a weird thing uh but Jared McCain is going to be lottery pick um how high in the lottery we’ll see and there’s a chance that he’s just like a top 20 pick but he’s going to go in in the first round let start with him I’m I think I’m most familiar with him but I don’t I don’t love his fit with the Blazers here’s the thing he might be the best shooter in the draft with all due respects the dton connects like he might be the best shooter in the draft he’s he’s in his one season of Duke Jared McCain is averaged 14 points five rebounds and 1.9 assists shot 46.2% overall of the floor but 52 and a half% from Two and 41.4% from three on 5.8 attempts per game north of 41% on almost 6 threes dude can really shoot it 88 half% from the free throw line dude can really shoot it um you know I I am as a as a Carolina boy I have seen a lot of Jared McCain um he’s not quite a point guard you know I think his position in the NBA if he’s going to be the best version of himself is a point guard because he measured 6-2 flat uh Barefoot at the combine like he’s a smaller guard he didn’t really play that he didn’t have a ton of like on ball primary Creator opportunities at Duke because of their roster but also like it’s probably not what he’s best at right now but I think his his future in the league to stick is probably like there’s not a lot of 6-2 shooting guards in the league it’s just it’s not a position that exists I I’m pretty comfortable with Jared McCain being an NBA player for a long time I think he can like the shooting both off off a little bit off the bounce off movement as a sto catch and shoot guy as like as a spacer excellent excellent shooter um I think he has some pretty good touch driving off of drive leveraging his shooting to drive um he’s not like a get to the rim guy like you’re not going to see him like oh surprise dunk or anything like that but I think he has a lot of good a lot of craft and a lot of good a lot of good touch inside particularly just like nice touch on on straight line get to the rim you know put put it on the rim quickly finish finish with your strong hand type of drives um I I like I I I I think jerem McCaine is a 10year NBA Pro because of the shooting touch and because of the skill um and he’s a pretty good rebounder for his size like 62 average five rebounds a game but even just watching him he rebounds well he has a good just like get back to the rim for defensive rebounds like he has a good he has a good sense of it rebounding typically translates I don’t know that at like 62 um it really matters whether you’re like a good rebounder but it’s a it’s a nice plus to have is that he has a nose for the ball particularly coming off the rim as a defensive rebounder like he’s good at it he rebounded well in in um in the games that I saw like in traffic or understanding understanding you know get a body on someone get back to the ball I I am comfortable with him being a long-term Pro um other folks higher on him than I am uh ESPN has him 15 on their big board the ringer Kevin Uh Kevin oconor recently released actually on Tuesday released an updated mock draft and a big and his updated big board and he has Jeremy Kane all the way up at seven so like well liked I my concern with him is like what position does he play um he’s not like a perfectly clean fit right now on the current Blazers roster but the current Blazers roster is not going to be what the roster looks like when they’re good um so I’m not I’m not super I’m not super worried about it but um if he’s a if he’s a two he’s like a he’s Seth Curry right like he’s someone who is a really useful offensive player but needs to play in the right type of situation and probably isn’t a starter in the league for a long time because um the right situation is rarely starting a 6-2 guard at shooting guard that is um if he’s a point guard like if he develops real primary point guard skills and I don’t think we saw that at Duke and I think maybe evaluators who’ve seen him more like at the high school level could tell you more I’m just talking about what I’ve seen him play in college he just didn’t get that opportunity I really view him as that if he’s a point guard though he’s like a he’s he’s a really intriguing Prospect like he’s a straight up good one he’s a good he’s a good basketball player for in a variety of for in a variety of spots if if he can do that um again like I don’t think he’s a perfect fit on the Blazers but he is I I am comfortable with him being an NBA player and if the Blazers are going to draft him he’s probably coming off like they they’re going to have to he’s a they have seven and 14 in this draft 14 is the spot like where they would have to make that decision wouldn’t hate it wouldn’t wouldn’t love it um I think he’s an NBA player but don’t know if he’s an NBA player in Portland the other name I want to talk about here in this workout is a name that I am increasingly becoming intrigued by I mentioned him in a show where I did second round targets just some like sort of names to know and I offered six names to know it in the second round this is Dylan Jones from Weber State shout out to Harold Arseno and Damen Lillard um this is you know the pride of Ogden Utah spent four years in the Big Sky didn’t didn’t you know was it was a bench player as freshman year and then he started his final three years in college and his senior year in college senior Weber State he was just freaking great like I mean that that’s the thing he’s 20 points 20.8 points 9.8 boards 5.2 assists two steals shot 48.9% from the floor including 32.4% from three and 86% 85.7% from the freee throw line like Dylan Jones was hyper hyper productive the question is like can you be a w like a if he’s not a giant point guard because he’s six he measured 64 and a half and he and weighed in like just shy of 240 pounds at at the combine like he’s big right he has at at 64 and a half he has a 611 wingspan he’s probably not a one at in that frame right that’s not a point guard and if he’s he’s so he’s like a 23 um I think his like when you watch his frame he looks like totally like an NBA Wing even even if he’s 6’5 like he’s he’s big um as a non-shooter um can you play in a primarily at least off the- ball role to begin to begin the you know to to fit in in the NBA as particularly to begin your career because maybe you’ll get maybe you’ll earn more on ball reps later in your career as as you sort of as you improve but can you can you be an off ball guy and a non-shooter at his sort of size in the league maybe let’s talk more about Dylan Jones and a little about tjon Salon in the second segment I like Dylan Jones and he could be a real option at 34 uh and Salon well the Blazers better get him at seven if they won and let’s talk about both those guys in the second segment join me there won’t you first though I case of someone who I’ve never seen miss a shot let’s be clear I wasn’t watching a lot of Big Sky basketball shout out to my guy Seth I know you were out there watching Big Sky basketball but I was not but Dylan Jones like 64 and A2 Barefoot with a 611 wingspan 240 um at Weaver State he got to run a lot of primary creation stuff um and I think that helped uh mitigate some of the shooting concerns right like he’s a 32% shooter his sophomore season he shot 35% from three but as a junior 30% as a senior 30 32% like he’s not he’s not really a shooter what he is is a big dude who gets to his spots and shoots a lot of good Nic looking floaters um he’s not an Above the Rim guy like his dunks all come on Fast Break situations like in the half court he is a he shoots floaters and he takes like low to the ground Euro steps to get around and use his frame to finish around the rim but he’s got craft he’s got some really nice passing ability at his frame um and like I I I really like him as as a potential 34 40 Target for the Blazers they have two second round picks and I would probably be excited about Dylan Jones in either of those spots um the ESPN has him at 47 the ringer has him at 55 so this is a case where they like Jared McCain more than me and I like Dylan Jones more than them um that happens I I I would say that those folks are a little more plugged into the to the the breath of all the prospects in the draft than I am but um you know you develop preferences and I think my preference watching watching him play is like craft frame strength uh multitude of skills in terms of passing he’s got he’s you know a guy his size who can dribble and use his size to get to his spots and has touched to score I think you can work with that um like I said the shooting is a question mark because if he’s an off-ball guy being a non shooter is probably really hard to break into the league to begin with but if he has enough craft to be like a second side Creator and he has enough like the frame to kind of be like oh you can run little pick and pick and roll flares with him and then he can get into spots and he can you know attack mismatches because he’s just like bigger than other two guards that are going to guard him particularly on second units like I you know I don’t know that um you know he’s he’s 22 he spent four years in in uh at at Weber State and the Blazers the last time they drafted a guy who spent 22-year-old spent a lot of time at Weber State it turned out really well I’m not exactly projecting that but I am I would say I’m very intrigued by him I I I like him as his second round pick I’m not sure what his ceiling is and I he has some obvious limitations there and like who does he guard in the NBA because he’s not like a guy who leaps and blocks shots he has good hands like two steals a game and if you watch the highlights like he gets into he’s physical and gets into the um you know helps gets down on help defense and and um and and creates havoc in the passing Lanes there but like does he have the athleticism to be like a really highlevel Wing Defender probably not but I I’m intrigued enough by the craft to say like 34 I think I’m putting a pretty big star next to Dylan Jones’s name cuz I I’m I’m I’m into it um with second round picks it’s always a dart throw this is probably where I’d be throwing my Dart today speaking of throwing darts back when I started doing the uh the Tenon spins on this program I this was like in March roughly um the name that I would always just say like oh well if the Blazer at 13 or 14 the name I like is tjon Salon I didn’t know anything about him right but I like saw the name on draft boards I read a little bit about him I said okay he’s 19 he’s 69 215 lb I started watching little highlights of him he’s gigantic he has a huge frame um everyone says like the number one thing about him is that he plays really hard 19-year-old NBA frame really high motor that seems like a worthy shot at 14 right and so I was just like when we would do this exercise I’d say okay I think my guy is tan Salam not knowing much about him right just like very very basic stuff then I think it’s the ESPN first reported that Salon was was gaining Traction in the top 10 and it’s like okay chase him into the chase him into the top 10 well the Blazers have a top 10 pick like maybe seven is the spot for him and now increasingly I think Salon seems to be the biggest Riser of anyone during draft season this always happens with some Prospect and whether the perception of him Rising based on all the reporting is as true as where he’ll actually end up on draft night remains to be seen But typically when a name that was in the 15 to 21 range ends up in the 5 to8 range it means that NBA teams like the word is out and and folks who do this professionally right like um guys like Kevin Kevin OK Conor at the ringer and a friend of the program Rafael Barlo NBA big board and and uh former guest in the program Christen peak of Yahoo sports like these are people who are talking to NBA front offices talking to Scouts talking to um you know to people who work in the league and saying like hey who do you like or who do you think who who Who’s who’s kind of who’s a name that I don’t know or wouldn’t think of that’s higher up on the board these are like saying who’s going where and Salon is a dude who is on the rise in chrisen peak’s latest mock draft she has uh Salon as high up as five at five to Detroit like a huge Riser because he’s he’s he’s moving up that high on ESPN uh they have Salon eth going to um going to San Antonio and on the ringer they have uh ongo seventh to your Portland Trailblazers that’s Kevin oconor at the ringer and Jeremy woo and Jonathan javone at ESPN now not all of these drafts are like prescriptive in terms of um this is exactly how it’s going to fall out I I think typically mocks particularly this time of year we we’re we’re three weeks out from the NBA draft it’s like it’s a combination of who does this particular evaluator prognosticator like and what are they hearing from NBA teams right so it’s it’s a combination of both things I don’t think every mock is meant to be shown like this is exactly how it’s going to go some of it is like conjecture for the point of being like here’s who I like and what I would do and here’s what I’m hearing from NBA teams and this combination of things puts players here right like this makes sense for this reason and this makes and and this is what the Intel I’m getting is so this is how I’m piecing together the puzzle it’s obviously guessing right like it’s obviously guessing I don’t mean to say like salah’s range is 5 to8 that would be silly that’s not how it works but I think it’s pretty clear that salong who was a trendy sort of back of the lottery Target here on this particular program and in some other spaces as well is an is his range is higher than that now like he’s going to go higher up in the draft it seems so that sort of gets us to the next question right should the Blazers Chase to Jean salon at 7 I wouldn’t be opposed to it I think um I think he has his floor is pretty low just because of his overall skill set I don’t think um I watched a really good video and I will link it in the episode description of this episode from s Vini on his game theory podcast with uh Bryce and I’m I’m blanking on Bryce’s last name now but um coach Bryce uh like and they broke down one of salon’s better games that he had played in the in the French league playoffs with Chalet and like the comparison they gave and I like this one as a comp was Aaron Gordon and when Aaron Gordon was was tasked with being a primary Creator he was he was just out of his depth in Orlando right like he just that was not what he was capable of when he was put as a fourth option on offense kind of garbage guy play defense do all the little things and when you need to step up and score a little bit you can step up and score a little bit but um you know not in game seven in the playoffs apparently but like I mean Aaron Gordon was freaking very good on championship team so I’d say it’s a solid comp but like I think that’s an interesting when you’re trying to like put Salon in a box somewhere and you don’t need to put these guys in a box when you’re trying to think about like what’s the upside here I don’t think the upside is is janisan Tumo right it’s not this gigantic primary Creator type it’s probably a garbage man like it’s probably a hustle like highlevel hustle role player someone who plays good team defense and Salah uh from the breakdown I saw plays really really competitive defense um but maybe doesn’t have the you know and he can shoot a little bit but he hasn’t been consistently a high level shooter in the French league but he has like a his shot like it’s a high arcing three and when it goes in you’re like no that seems repeatable um but like maybe he’s a little light on skill and a little light on you know he’s raw right he’s got a long way to go but he but the motor is there and the want to on defense is there and the and the frame is there to be an NBA player and that’s kind of what you’re projecting okay this person has some tools that you could that are useful how could these tools be developed into high level skill to make this player in NBA player and I think that’s why Salon is is rising because the defensive like the defensive chops and just the the sh the size the sheer size as well as the motor it’s like that’s really appealing and in this particular draft it’s like well that might be more appealing to that might be appealing enough that you rise easily into the top 10 if the blazes are going to T Chase Salon it’s not going to be at 14 it’s going to be at 7even and I think that’s um seems to be one of at least from the early reporting one of the biggest risers during the pre-draft process is is the young man from cholet in the French league like um what once was a dream at 14 is now like if if if he’s there on the clock at 7 you’re not he’s probably not coming back to the Blazers at 14 so if they want him that’s where to go get him uh the NBA did it their uh their Euro uh pre-draft camp this week and a bunch of the European Stars said they’ll be coming now that that’s over coming to the us so I don’t know if if Salon will end up working out in Portland OR who might but some of those top names I don’t think Reese a will work out for the Blazers cuz he’s not going to want to work out for seven but like niik toic and we’ll see what he does cuz he’s still recovering from an injury and salon and some other guys coming coming here like over the next couple weeks they will be in probably working out for teams maybe private workouts where there’s no individual workouts but um it it’s a name to know and Salon is certainly a name on The Rise um so if he does work out for the Blazers who basically haven’t worked anyone out really in the seven range all the all the lottery guys they’ve worked out are all like 14 I think Jared McCain’s like a Target at 14 they might it might be hard for them to get guys in at seven um because maybe the guys in at seven believe that they’re top five so they don’t want to work out for seven if you want to draft me go ahead and draft me but I’m not coming into the building that kind of thing speaking of five and seven and who thinks they’re going to go where there seems to be a clear consensus forming at the top two and then it is a total wideopen field after that let’s let’s look at some mock drafts and talk about um kind of what we know and don’t know about the draft so far join me in that third segment that’s what we’ll do to close the show first though I want to tell you that Today’s Show is brought to you by FanDuel it’s America’s number one sports book and right now it’s win or take all time in the NBA and NHL we’ve made it to the finals in both listening to lockon Blazers so it seems that a player that we once thought at 14 has rised has risen has rised he he has risen to to being a a pretty clear top 10 Prospect that was the reporting and now from from one draft service and now that seems to be the consensus across the board the Blazers are going to chase him um they’re going to have to chase him at 7 but consensus that is a word that you do not see very often in this draft and I think that’s that’s kind of the real truth here um there seems to be a clear top two most Services most predicted Pro prognosticators and draft services and people who do this professionally think that there are two names that are going to be in the top two uh the Hawks will either draft alexar or Zachary Ras and then after that the Wizards will choose behind that right they’ll they seem to be most likely although the Wizards are a little bit more of a wild card there but like they are likely choosing between whoever Falls rash or or SAR who whoever’s up there I think um R rash has been um he had a solid playoffs in France and I think he has kind of solidified himself as higher up the draft board than maybe he was was like at one point I think he was slipping a little bit cuz it’s like what does this guy do is he is he like a on ball guy and and I think um the shooting and some better play in the in the in the French league playoffs has made him clearly as a top two Prospect not every single service has him there and you’ll see some big boards that have him lower but when you talk mocks like people who are predicting like you know difference being like ranking your ranking prospects on a big board versus like a mock draft predicting where you think players might go the absolute ensus is that for the absolute that’s probably too strong a word for what I’m trying to convey here the the general consensus seems to be the top two guys SAR and Ras um I like SAR I probably don’t love Ras but I totally get it with him the the size the defensive impact the shooting those are skills that translate if you can add some other stuff at 610 you got a really good you got a really intriguing player right and then there’s so many question marks like obviously those Two Gentlemen come with their own question marks but like even then you start to get in question you start to get in like a territory I don’t think there’s firm you know either of the g- league guys Maus pazel or Ron Holland people are all over the map on them people are all over the map on Nicolet toic um it is I I think the Kentucky guys you see Reed Shepard as high as three you see him back at 12 Donovan kingan you see him as high as three you see him back at seven for the Blazers um he’s he’s he’s kind of a guy who who falls all in there in that three to three 3 to9 category there’s just no consensus too wit a couple of my of of my preferred mock drafters Rafael Barlo friend of the program from locktown NBA big board has a mock draft that he released this week and he has the Blazers going at 7 taking Ron Holland out of the g- league and at 14 taking tjan Salon out of Chalet uh and then over at the ringer Uh Kevin OK Conor released a mock draft this week and he has the Blazers at seven taking tjan Salah and at 14 taking Ron Holland out of the NBA G league and that’s that is like a perfect example of how all over the map these mocks are Christ Peak FR of the program um has um mock where the Blazers take Donovan kingan at seven and kle wear at 14 that would be a bizarre draft oops all centers that would be a bizarre draft um but sometimes Talent is talent I don’t think they would do that but uh it’s it’s it’s an it’s an intriguing one but let’s talk the sort of Holland Salah Salah Holland flip right um if a guy’s range is 7 to 14 right like he could go seven he could go as high he could go he could drop all the way to 14 or like or you got to get him at seven or if he’s not there there’s all like obviously there’s like teams like okay what is Memphis going to do they’re probably going to they probably want a player who can contribute right they’re more of like a dton concy Donovan kinging type team right because they don’t want a project they want someone who could like play nine minutes in a playoff game maybe um because they think they’re going to be good but like um San Antonio like how good do they want to be are they are they a project team or are they a team who’s like not who doesn’t want to be patient are they like that’s sort of those are the picks right behind the Blazers what do they do with those spots ahead of the Blazers what what does a team like Houston do um do they trade out of that pick do they go with um do they go with someone who can like maybe help in the rotation as just like a shooter like Reed Shepard do they go with some and and Donovan kinging or do they say like we don’t like either of these guys we would love to get out of three or do they go with a project right CU they’re like okay we we couldn’t find a trade spot maybe we’re maybe we’re a match bazis type of of team because like hey how many times are we going to draft in the top three again maybe several shout out to Brooklyn but like we we they’re in a spot where they want to be competitive because they don’t own their own draft picks so like what is their approach and I think that has a lot to do with where you see the ranges right is that like teams not every team is the Blazers in in this obviously but like the Blazers have a unique situation where I think they have the luxury of of patients right they are um there’s no there is they don’t need someone who is like good right away they don’t even need someone who cracks the rotation right away like they have the luxury of being patient and letting a guy develop and seeing where they fit um and they have a a roster that has some balance with like young players that need to play but also like some vets so if you needed to guy guys to like learn behind vets um the Blazers like can trade or not trade some of those veterans to offer that opportunity to make those moves but I think the lack of consensus is really intriguing like I don’t have I don’t have necessarily like a strong take on what this means for the Blazers but I think it is I think it’s you know two smart people Kevin oconor and Rafael Baro like um speaking of of of Raph Raph sent out a tweet earlier this week that said that he had heard from a source that Salon no way he goes past eight eight would be the San Antonio Spurs again the Blazers want them they they want him at 7 um but it’s like I wonder part of me wonders is like if you end up with Holland and Salon if you end up at 7 and 14 or 14 and seven does it really matter absolutely not but there is some opportunity like who who do you because the salary slots are a little bit different and because of your because you’re gambling like if the Blazers are going to make both of those picks um seven is kind of the guy you really want and 14 is the guy who hey this is where we’re at with 14 if assuming that they stand still um speaking of those two guys just like specifically before we get out of here I think that would be a fine draft I don’t love Ron Holland but I am intrigued by him I think I think he’s a player I’m intrigued by some people are lower on him than I am I I I kind of think um the motor in the defense will be okay he’s not a great fit next to scoot Henderson specifically because he might be a non-shooter but um I would Bank on Ron Holland being an NBA player um Salah is just so ining that I don’t know it’s 7 or 14 but yeah I want to see what he grows into so I’d be into it um that that’s going to do it for today’s show just some some thoughts on sort of the consensus and why um like I don’t think we have a I don’t think three weeks out we have a good sense of anything after two and that puts the Blazers in an awkward spot because it’s hard to figure it out so here’s what I’m going to do I’m going to talk to my friends around the locked on podcast Network I’m going to listen to their shows I’m going to send some text messages I’m going to talk to people I know and see what see if we can get a of what other teams might be thinking and that’ll give uh us dear listeners dear Blazer fans and and listeners to the program a better sense of what might happen leading up to the Blazers picks um because I think with a lack of consensus maybe like here are four options here are four options here are four options will give us a better chance of when the Blazers on the clock who their four options might be so look for that in in probably not tomorrow’s show to be quite honest but uh on a show next week later this week Friday’s program Keandre from
