How the Spurs can WIN the 2024 NBA Draft

How the Spurs can WIN the 2024 NBA Draft

the San Antonio Spurs last year were one of the worst teams in the NBA but with multiple top 10 picks in the draft ending their season seven and three in their last 10 games and Victor web inyama showing Hall of Fame potential already they can absolutely kill this offseason and potentially make the play in next year but it all starts with draft night if I were the Spurs GM the one thing I would absolutely want to do is trade for an elite point guard don’t depend on the draft when you don’t have to players like Trey young and Darius Garland are available and could do the one thing that the Spurs desperately need and that is set Victor up for easy looks at The Rim or easy looks anywhere on the court for that matter Trey young has made Clint capella so much money in the NBA who’s a 610 inside center with absolutely no offensive skills besides setting screens I can only imagine what Trey would make wemi look like and ever since Jared Allen came to Cleveland next to Garland he’s been a consistent All-Star level Center I think wemi is such an Elite Talent that gambling on the draft and potentially wasting a year or two of this man’s career could be a huge loss for the franchise a potential Trey young package would look like helden Johnson Devonte Graham and giving the Hawks their 2025 and 2027 picks back and as a Hawks fan I’d be happy with this package because we can’t rebuild without getting our 2025 pick back so what do youall think is this a good trade for both sides and then a Garland trade would be a bit more complicated because I don’t think there’s a good package without making the trade three or four teams deep but it could definitely get done and probably for even less than the trade package so that would be the first thing that I probably do but it honestly doesn’t even look like they’re going to make a trade before the NBA draft so let’s just assume that they keep their picks picks four and eight the number one prospect that the Spurs should hope follow to pick for is Zachary rager while I’m not the highest on rer as an overall Prospect the Spurs would be an amazing fit for his game and no it is not because of the French Connection WB is the lengthiest player in the NBA and if you can double down on that without giving up spacing on the offensive end then the other NBA teams will dread playing you rajer is a great 3 andd player who can finish around the basket if you hit him on Cuts or in the fast break I think his lack of self-creation is a bit concerning for him to ever be looked at as a potential All-Star and his on ball defense doesn’t stand out too much but if he could just play great help defense and cover as much of the Court as he can while potentially being a 40% three-point shooter I just see this as being the safest and best pick in the draft you just got to hope that he falls to four now the real question is would it be worth it for the Spurs to trade up to pick two if it’s looking like rager is going to Washington personally I wouldn’t trade an extra first round pick just to move up two spots in a draft like this so who else would I consider drafting in my mock draft in my last video I had the Spurs pick Rob Dillingham over reager because while rager is a better Prospect I think if a GM falls in love with a particular guard that’s exactly what the organization will prioritize even if a better Wing Prospect is available Rob Dillingham is a prospect that definitely has his flaws but is way too good of an offensive point guard to not think about I feel like most of his flaws like his size and defense could easily be hit in by Victor wanyama and Greg papovich last year the Spurs offense was terrible with no one on the roster being able to create for themselves and Rob Dillingham is the most Shifty scorer in the entire draft he’s got one of those handles that are really fun to watch in hoop mixtapes but in his year at Kentucky he used it very effectively almost never doing too much and just beating his Defender the second day he created an advantage but the most intriguing part of his game to me is honestly his off Ball scoring potential mixed in with his self-creation at Kentucky he didn’t have the ball in his hands the majority of every possession but he was still able to light a spark Off the Bench with his shooting off a down screen easy fast break points because of his speed and his ability to attack a late rotation off the catch he could easily be Victor web inyama Tyrese Maxi if he puts the work in in the next couple years now those are the two main guys I would prioritize drafting if hour San Antonio but there is a good chance that rajer goes two to Washington and Rob Dillingham does go three to Houston so who else would I draft well this is my big board for players I would draft it four so let’s go over it first guy on my spurs Big Board is Ron Holland you could say Holland’s lack of a three-point shot is concerning but everything else is exactly what the Spurs need he can get to the rim with the ball cut to the basket off the ball run and transition and it’s very versatile defensively and it’s the first guy I’ve talked about so far this video that I think can actually be the Spur’s future primary Defender next is Reed Shepard a sharpshooter with high IQ and potential to be even more I mean he’s just a good basketball player and the upside of this pick is even if he shows very little ability to create on the ball which is very possible he could be a great backup playing like a bogdon bogdanovich role and that’s his floor in my opinion Stefan Castle would be an interesting fit because he would immediately be the team’s best point of attack Defender but the Spurs need a main facilitator which Castle wants to be but not showing much of that at Yukon can leave you a bit concerned so it’s a gamble I think I believe in him but his lack of Separation off the dribble versus college level players is not ideal so the most ideal situation for him to thrive would to be playing next to a point guard as rookie season and occasionally switch roles when they need him to and maybe I’m just hating on Tre Jones but if they pick a point guard here they are probably going to start year one I just don’t think Trey Jones is the starting point guard of the Spurs for the future and then I guess this is a hot take but all the way at seven I have nicoa topic I’m honestly not a fan of any NBA player that looks like they can’t contribute without the basketball unless you are an offensive engine like Trey young or Luca donic he is by far the best facilitator and would technically help wemi out the most but if you can’t shoot or defend at a high level it’s hard for me to believe in you making a big board for pick eight is really hard because it just really depends on who they pick at four so let me just say this if you pick a guard at four then there are two forwards that you should look into drafting Ron Hall I already talked about but the other is Dalton kette I don’t care how old he is if you see a bucket that you only have to pay a total of $30 million over 4 years you draft a bucket that you only have to pay $30 million over four years get your Sixth Man in the future there is a reason that most of these Lottery teams are in the lottery sure it’s a lack of talent but it’s also a lack of shooting all kadet is going to do is make his teammates lives easier Vel and wemi need space to operate in the pick and roll you can’t leave canette opened soan is forced to pick up the ball with 5 Seconds on the shot clock ket’s going to give you a better chance than anyone in this strapped to make a tough bucket to make that grenade his upside isn’t all the way there with the rest of the top 10 picks but if you want to win the most basketball games you can in the next two to three years you draft him especially if you are two picks into the lottery now there’s one guy that I have number two on my overall big board and that’s Matas Matas buellis is a guy that I fully believe in but I can understand the hesitation that GMS have with this terrible three-point shooting Gear with the ignite but I don’t think he’s a great fit with San Antonio I think having Matas and Jeremy soan on the same roster seems a bit redundant and normally you wouldn’t think about Jeremy soan if you’re picking top 10 but Matas is an exception where you probably need to prioritize his growth for him to be effective and I don’t think he’d have a chance to develop with the San Antonio Spurs this video was a guide of how the San Antonio Spurs can win the 2024 NBA draft I’ll leave an entire review of the video on the screen right now in case it got a bit confusing and that’s because so much can happen on NBA draft night that there’s really no one definitive answer and I believe they have a couple second round picks so down below in the comments I’m going to write about a couple of the second round picks that I think could really help swing their entire draft but yeah I really hope that I opened your guys’ minds a little bit about who to draft because if you’re really stubborn about one player and don’t think they should draft anyone else then you’re just being stubborn I spent a lot of time on this video so please if you made it all the way through please like the video if you want to see more subscribe and comment just your opinions on any of the prospects that I mentioned because it’s really interesting I’ll try and respond to every single comment when I can but yeah thanks for watching peace out

  1. At pick 35 I would LOVE for them to draft one of Bub Carrington, Ryan Dunn, or Daron Holmes if any are available

then at pick 48 you hope one of Ajay Mitchell, Bronny James, Adem Bona, Nikola Djurisic, or Baylor Scheierman are available

  2. Great analysis, great vid. Really hate those mock drafts for the Spurs wherein they would get a PG at #4, then another PG at #8, kinda silly as it is redundant. The team's weak spots right now are at the PG and SF positions as well as 3pt shooting and/or spacing.. so they should get a PG who can shoot the lights out, like Dillingham or Sheppard, then either Knecht or Holland at SF. Knecht is pretty good at making 3s, and while Holland is not, at least he's great at slashing through the hoops, great at defense, very good at fast break as well. If Wemby and Holland are running their fast break, that's an automatic 2 points scored by either one. No one would be able to stop them. =)

  3. Spurs are in such a great shape this year there are almost no wrong answers. They could draft a guy reed sheppard at 4 and a ron holland at 8 and be considered a home run. Same goes for a Castle and dillingham pairing. Or Risacher and Topic. Essentially a future lead ball handler and a potential 2way/3 and D wing to work with. Tre Jones would be one of the best back up guards in the league so im not worried at all if someone like Dillingham or Reed need a year before taking on the full point reaponsibilities

  4. Now thats how you do a video , i too agree with another commentor about these mock drafts. And Spurs fans should know bobnatter what we won the draft….. Lol .. my opinion only …i would love for the Spurs to package our second round picks together with a pkayer like devonte, blake , or Malaki for a mid to late furst round pick for insurance… Lets say some teams our losing there minds on how to rebuild there teams….and they all reach on a player, whatever Spurs miss on early , there are close to the same kind of player un this later …that are kinda just as raw with high upside. SO GO SPURS GO…. Lets get ready for a great draft … Alien in the Mask šŸ‘½

  5. Spurs are built on draft picks bro. They wont trade away none of the picks they got from Atlanta to get trae young, which im sure thats what they will want. The 2025 class is suppose to be super deep and the Spurs have 3 picks in that class. (Their own, Atlanta, and chicagos top 10 protected) no way they want to miss out on that. Besises going after trae young is short sighted move, no offense.

  6. If spurs get rob Dillingham and Dalton knecht šŸ˜³šŸ™€watch out next year new era Spurs coming šŸ’ÆšŸ”„

  7. Alright I will be your Spurs manager for now, I propose trading the 4th and 8th picks for Trae Young, including Tre Jones and Keldon Johnson in the deal. These picks have limited value since this draft lacks high-ceiling prospects; none are projected to reach superstar status. Instead of waiting four years, we should acquire a 25-year-old star guard now to pair with Wemby. By the time Wemby turns 25, he'll have gained valuable experience and will have an elite guard by his side. This strategy will attract other stars to San Antonio, creating a solid team foundation.
Alternatively, if we don't trade the 4th and 8th picks, we should consider drafting Castle and Edey. Edey or Buzelis would be strong choices for the 8th pick.

  8. Tidjane Salaune at 8, heā€™s raw, knows Wemby and can grow overtime as he has the work ethic according to Wemby.
Spurs will most likely continue the rebuild next year.

  9. Risacher and a decent PG with some minimal defensive skills would be great. But that might be a bit stretched.

  10. If you think the Spurs want Trae Young youā€™re not a Spurs fan. He has 0 Spurs DNA. His ego and soul would need to be put in a meat grinder before he could be a Spur. Little b would need to learn to play defense too šŸ™„

    Garland, though. Yes.

Best move would be getting Dejounte Murray back, weird as it seems from the outside.

  11. This is the most intriguing draft anyone can remember. So many players have potentials that could make not picking them get you fired in a few years. 1. Dillingham could be on a Trae and Garland level or unplayable because of his size. 2. If Castle and Holland fight through the missed shots, their D and toughness could earn them major minutes. Or they could be Michael Kidd Gilchrist. 3. Matas is a 6' 10" athlete with no apparent weakness but all the mocks grudgingly place him at 5 with no confidence.

This will be the funnest live draft night ever! And GM's will be fired in 2 or 3 years as this draft shakes out in unforseen ways. Think of it. In 3 years we could all be saying, "Of course Tidjaune Salaun was going to be the best player. Anyone could have seen that?!?"

  12. Trae Young IS NOT the answer. Young has a fat contract that the Spurs do not need. The Hawks were stupid to give him his present contract.
Your trade idea sucks for San Antonio. The Spurs give away too much capital to gain a guy with a huge contract. Bad move!
San Amtonio fans are not excited about Trae Young or Dejounte Murray, who quit on the Spurs.
Darius Galand might work, if the price is right.

Zacharrie Risacher āœ…āœ…āœ…is the perfect pick for the Spurs at 4.
Dillingham āŒāŒāŒplays no defense. He would be a terrible choice for the Spurs. Popovic hates players who do no or will not play defense. Dill doesnā€™t fit!
    Ron Hollandāœ…
    Reed Sheppard āŒ
    Stephon Castle āœ…
    Nikola Topic ā˜‘
    Dalton Knecht āŒ
    Matas Buzelis ā˜‘

  13. In the opening phase of a chess game, you see that you can take a pawn that is not protected and gain a quick point advantage, but in doing so you would make your overall position on the board weaker, which could come back to haunt you as the game progresses. You see another move that doesn't gain you any pieces immediately, but it really strengthens your position on the board, setting you up to win in the long run. Which move do you take? Grabbing Trae Young is like taking the pawn now. Sure, maybe you'll make the play-in, but Trae is small and not great on defense. Your goal in today's NBA is to build a team of long, quick, two-way players who can guard multiple positions, building them around a couple of star players and giving them time to build chemistry. It takes time, but in the long run it is the winning, dynasty-building, move. I'm not against a trade, but it has to be a person who fits well into a long-term strategy. I think they can be a playoff team in two years and contending in three even if they build mostly from the draft, so Wemby's career won't be a waste. Most of the greats took a few years before they started winning chips.

  14. On the one hand, Popvich, a legendary coach that known on his defence. On the other hand, Young, one of the worst defenders in the league. Sorry, but i don't think he will sign him even for free. There are really good guards as free agents and the Spurs have enough money to sign a good one (probably a vet (Lowry, Westbrook) that can be a mentor to the pg that they will probably draft). I don't think they will trade good assets, definitely not draft picks, for this purpose.

  15. Wemby last year and picks 4 & 8 this draft. Thereā€™s no way San Antonio can lose. As a Houstonian and life long Rockets fan. Iā€™m excited about seeing what the Spurs do.

  16. Wanna swap pick 1 for 4 and 8? Plus you can have Zach Collins and Jerremy Sochan plus 1 of your first round picks back for DJ. That gets your rebuild back on track and gets the Spurs completive straight away. Win win if you ask me.

  17. I like this video, with one exception.

Respectfully. anyone that thinks Trae Young is a good fit for the Spurs has a complete lack of understanding about how the Spurs use cultural fit to create team success. This podcaster isnā€™t the only one to make that mistake though.

Why do you think the Spurs got rid of Dejounte Murray in the first place?

Getting tossed out of games for kicking the ball directly at a ref is the kind of thing that gets you run out of San Antonio.

Wisdom and humility are necessary traits for being a Spur. Trae Young has neither of those – just a whole lot of offensive pizazz – and penchant for trying to get his coach fired.

  18. Spurs need a PG and a SF. Stephon Castle can technically play both. Pick him at #4 if Ricacher is not available.

Then you pick either a PG or SF at #8, whichever is most favorable and still available, and you have both positions covered either way.

  19. I NEEEEED DILLINGHAM! Been on em since high school n now we have a chance to draft em šŸ˜± same thing wit Wemby, so if we get both of em in back to back drafts for ma lifelong team would be crazy
