thank you very much subscribe to lockon and thank you for being in every day all right Corey winter sent me a thread a long thread usually for ask LJ I don’t grab those kind of things but today I really thought that this question well written summarized how each and every jazz fan feels so let me start I’m a daily listener appreciate passion work see I think everyone should feel that that’s no no no that’s not just kidding I understand your desire to see an improved product on the court in the short term in value proposition expected value versus actual value trading one verse 10 for cam Johnson being an example so earlier this week I talked about cam Johnson and I was like if that trade’s available I think you have to make it if you’re the Jazz however he writes as a long lifelong jazz fan I’ve never experienced a season post Stockton Malone where I felt the Jazz had the legitimate chance to win the title I personally would be happy with another couple years in the bottom five in the league in order to maximize his team’s chances for a title it obviously requires luck but drafting in the top five multiple years in a row is probably our best bet and the excuse me the Jazz first round picks are their most valuable assets outside of lowry recent reports say Ryan Smith wants to start accelerating the rebuild history would suggest cutting such Corners leads to improved records in the short term lowers the ceiling in the long term I’m in a minority of fans who would like to see Lowry move this offseason for a multitude of first in order to get more bites at the Apple as possible so restarting otherwise it seems we add around Lowry with non- premium draft picks Andor trades that Net players in the 25 to 45ish of best players in the league and top out in the six Nate seed for perpetuity until the next rebuild while another two or three years of being bad sounds rough in the filth it will be found would love to hear you speak on where a xanic Smith stand on the philosophy and if you would be willing to sacrifice five years for a 5% chance to win a title or two years for a 1% chance to win a title so I thought that was very well thought out tip of the hat to Corey winter um he’s actually an assistant baseball coach at Val perzo University when I read his Twitter to just kind of find out about him so he clearly has an understanding of all this um that’s kind of summary of where we feel isn’t it and I you know okay do I have a definitive answer my first answer is what I always thought we were doing and we got too good like I thought originally the that we were going to bot him out for four or five years and then get those picks and then as we rose up then hopefully Cleveland or Minnesota came down and then as we’re sitting at 4550 wins we get this draft pick that pushes us up and lets us bounce we just got too good right the first year with Mike connley and some of the pieces we still had left we just were too good and then last year will hardy did a masterful job coaching it and guys had a pretty good year and we we got we got good there for a while we solved that problem um and so the question is now do you really bottom it out that’s a hard one I think for a lot of jazz fans to follow I think it’s a hard one for Ryan Smith to follow on the other and like Danny Ang isn’t lost on the fact that Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum were top three picks of the NBA draft and that’s why they’re in the team he partially built is in the NBA finals and no one should be lost to Lucas the third pick of a draft one of the worst butcher drafts in the history of the NBA and Dallas was fortunate to be there but they were there I mean it took a lot it took Phoenix drafting DeAndre Aton Sacramento trashing Marvin Bagley and Atlanta being willing to trade for Trey young instead like took three teams making moves that cost front office people their jobs um you know the other issue is like Detroit has kind of done what we’re saying and isn’t there and so that’s what I think is there is an argument about building in the middle you know you’ve got to get one of those guys there’s just no question but there is some argument of trying to build in the middle um Detroit’s really scary to me Detroit you know when I look at Detroit and I’m now picking one example but Detroit has won 20 20 23 17 and 14 games the last five years now they’re a little different they started their rebuild from scratch without any draft picks and any pieces and that’s where it’s not a fair analogy because we came with all these pieces but with that said they’ve done that and I don’t know what they have for it Kade Cunningham’s okay I like Jaden Ivy I’d love it if if they wanted to go draft sheer want to trade us Jaden Ivy I’m in but I’m not sure I don’t know that I think that Detroit’s any closer today I don’t know that I don’t I don’t think Detroit’s losing 20 winning 22 games again next year so the bottoming out sounds okay because we talk about the bottoming out as though it’s bottoming out and then it’s rising up we but we never talk about the bottoming out and then bottoming out and bottoming out and bottoming out and bottoming out like that’s the really scary one you know the Indiana Pacers find a way to go trade for Tyrese halberton and you know they went from third 45 to about 500 in a short in season to 25 to 35 to 47 we’ll see where they go now that was pretty quick I think that’s what we’re trying to do that’s a similar model it’s a great question you know the question at the end was would I rather take five years of paying for a 5% chance win a championship I I’m the wrong one to ask because unlike Danny and Ryan and Justin who are obsessed with a championship if I’m totally honest just being honest I’m not I love the season the entertainment the journey the people I’m a little bit of the believer put yourself in the final four of the conference and see what happens see if you get a good match him and a sprain Dan you’re in the NBA Finals it’s not the it’s kind of a copout approach on my end because I think trying to build a championship is just too hard now on the other end we’ve had six Champions and six years at the end of this year and it’s seemingly getting more balanced so great question long great question appreciate it um and wanted to start there and then this gets to the same question should the Jazz tank next year for a draft class expect to be more talented than this year and if so what does next year look like and how does tanking affect the development of our young players so this is interesting the draft class just got better too one of the the top player of 2026 just reclassified for class of 2025 so there are now in the NBA draft world of 2025 about five NBA awesome prospects like that’s like if you go to the 2025 draft class you now have Cooper flag who’s the biggest name you’ve got Ace Bailey you’ve got Carlos boozer’s kid you you’ve got some n you’ve got some big time players that are floating around that right now um so you know and then and then there’s different viewpoints right like some people don’t have boozer’s kid as high though I think um I think he’s right I have to check and make sure I don’t have him on the wrong year it’s not always the easiest way to find the mock drafts of 2025 right now um but it is you know there’s a kid at ruter who’s really really good um there’s that’s I think Ace Bailey um there’s two kids at doke Cooper flag and another kid there’s somebody out of Real Madrid who’s supposed to be really good Baylor’s got a stud like it’s supposed to be a loaded top of the draft and I believe there was a reclassification um just this week that makes it even better um so so you know like yeah this draft CL it I’m not going to lie sitting where we sit right now watching the NBA finals and seeing where the rest of the West is lined up and where we are and trying to write the script for how we go get big game hunting in the offseason I’m having a hard time seeing it now we roll out our roster we’re not terrible so then we almost have to do something to become terrible um but it is easier for me right now to Envision us as one of the five worst teams in the NBA than one of the 15 best just the way the landscape is what does it du to our young players I mean Houston clearly decided that was enough after a while so that’s the dance like you’ve the trick is how can you continue to ask your players to play the game correctly Houston Under stepen stylus were not able to do that they were not able to ask their players to play the game correctly and they really felt the development had gotten to an absurdly bad level all right is there a different definition of big game hunting and what about a center from the Eastern Conference for the Utah Jazz that’s next as we continue on today’s edition of locked on Jazz Friday edition of locked on jazz is brought to you by my good friends over at Murdoch Hyundai you know I’ve been doing the Murdoch ads for a long time so much so that someone I mean literally the other day like was mocking me by saying like do you know something something and and sell Hyundai definition of big game hunting reminder if you’ve not made the switch already to do so to the first ever 247 National Sports channel it’s locked on sports today it’s available on Amazon Fire TV and on YouTube big day today you’ll get Celtic and Maverick reaction both Nick and John are in the building in Boston covering the game plus all the Yukon Lakers Stuff Plus all the other NHL getting ready for it it’s all at lock on sports day no one can cover it like the local Experts of lockdown this is an interesting question could big game hunting also mean going after top five pick next year the Jazz are presently constituted will be one of the five or six worst teams giving a chance for Cooper flag or other potential yep I think so because if you actually go back to the press conference where Danny a says we’re going big game hunting the next thing Danny AES says is yeah unless we get to July and we’re not able to do it and then then we may have to Pivot like he says that in the pressor no one heard it I think because most fans want to hear about big game hunting but the next comment that Danny made in that presser was exactly that was the comment that hey you know and if we don’t get anything done and we’re in July then maybe we have to Pivot and that’s J Danny’s kind of Mantra Danny is not you know his kind of viewpoint is the the plan is no plan the plan is a flexibility to be able to Pivot adapt react be there pounce when needed and be available um I do think the underlying question is the first question that got asked today is like well how much pressure is Ryan Smith putting on Danny a to go big game hunting now rather than big game hunting there but Danny like let’s knock Danny knows Danny’s had Kevin like this is a little bit kind of I remember when in the end of the first season and there was question for the media that was kind of really praising Walker Kesler and Danny kind of had this look on his face of like like I’ve had Kevin Garnett I’ve had Paul Pierce I played with Larry Bird I played with Kevin mccale I drafted Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown like Walker’s fine and he is he’s going to be a good player it’s going to be fine I’m not I’m so unworried about Walker’s second year in the NBA but Walker’s not in that sentence and that sentence is what wins and Danny knows that so yeah could we go big game Honeyman going for a top five pick absolutely here’s a question that I absolutely hate more than anything in the world and when I first got it I dismissed it and decided that I was not going to answer it and then I decided that’s a out that my job is to actually probably to answer these questions for you um and um I don’t like them because I know the guys and I don’t like the concept of like who is most likely to be traded here’s what’s interesting about who’s most likely to be traded by the Jazz I do not think Lowry is likely to be traded so let’s establish that so then we get into I almost think there’s only three players that could be traded and I’m not and so when you’re asking me are they going to be traded I’m not saying that you’ve asked me who’s most likely and here’s my point on this if the Jazz are going to make a trade they are going to be bringing back somebody of significant that becomes available I would assume that they’re bringing back someone of significant salary who they either someone’s in financial trouble and needs out off that contract or the Jazz have gone big game game hunting or whatever and therefore there’s really only three players that are most likely to get traded and that’s John Collins Colin ston and Jordan Clarkson Because they’re the only ones that are making more than $5 million like the tricky fun hard thing about trading in the NBA is that you actually have to have enough salary to trade guys I’m not saying that I think John Collins Colin sexon and Jordan Clarkson are going to be traded but if the question is who’s most likely you can trade Taylor Hendricks keay George Walker Kesler om YK s Bryce Sensa Darius basley Kenneth Kenny Lofton or Kenny or Jason Preston who’s on a two-way and the grand total of all of those guys together and I’m not even sure you om your’s situation of whether he can be traded right now but regardless it all adds up to $17 million or $18 million or 19 somewhere in that range like of all those players I just gave you they add up to like 21 million right in that range so yeah they could get tossed in the only reason you’re trading any of those is because the Jazz gave up on them and they decided to move on to a better prod they did that with oai like the Jazz clearly decided they didn’t think that oai had a better future than the guys they had in the roster and they traded to get another pick for him that was that was clearly the decision so they clearly still believe in Bryce they believe in Walker they believe in Keon they believe in Taylor very young why wouldn’t you Derek spasy is an interesting Prospect to have and he’s making 2.4 million like why would you trade him so I’m most likely to be traded we’ve got three choices I don’t think Lowry’s being traded and the only three choices are John Colin and Jordan not because of anything that they’re doing but solely because they’re making 26 18 and 15 145 million a year and those are the players and the salaries that could be put together to actually go acquire a player they’re also the three established players who could help a team win right now the Jazz have a lot of picks over the next few years what are the odds that they could use a pick this year on a draft and stash player what are your thoughts in General on draft and sta it was a very invogue thing in the mid 90s and then it’s kind of gone I think I think the money that the players are making by being on the NBA roster are now so big that they come the the G league is so valuable that they come and so I don’t think that I don’t think that ja draft and stash really exists anymore other than maybe in the second round but a first round draft pick that kind of guaranteed money they’re coming um I I don’t think you’re GNA find many draft and stash guys anymore so we’ll see the Jazz have that Gabriella uh kid that they got in the backside of the trade who actually just had a pretty good Euro camp in the backside of one of those trades that’s a little bit of a draft in stash right now but that it is it is a fading concept what in your opinion not option is the Jazz greatest position of need here’s what the greatest thing about Lowry is he’s our best player and he can play any of three positions and then from there I don’t really think we have a top 50 player in the NBA yet and we don’t have many that are top 100 I think John Collins established himself as a top 100 and Colin ston did as well but they’re neither of them are so good that you’re not going to acquire Talent at their position which leads to our next question but so my answer is just Talent which now leads to our next question do you think Isaiah harinstein from the Knicks would be a good free agent signing for us if we were trying to win next season giving the Knicks a restricted wi the yes I’m a huge Isaiah harinstein fan for lots of reasons one he’s good two he plays his ass off three he’s versatile he’s an unrestricted free agent by the way um and he is under um there are some restrictions as as the question askers is asking on what the Knicks can do um yes I love Isaiah harinstein I do think you probably have to move John Collins if you get Isaiah harinstein or else you’re pretty crowded with Taylor Hendrick there also I’m assuming Taylor Hendrick needs to play this year right I mean that’s a funny thing for us the only thing I’m back to the like what’s our position of need I’m assuming that Taylor Hendrick and keontay George need to play next year but I also know that will hardy just simply fundamentally does not believe in giving away minutes and so they better be good enough to get their minutes like the turnovers on from ke and the level of has to decrease and the level of focus has to increase and then Taylor just has to continue to improve but if you suddenly have Walker kler John Collins Isaiah harken Stein all on your roster and Taylor Hendricks those are your four bigs and Collins and in his playing he probably can play with Isaiah harinstein a little bit better than he can Walker Kessler but not much so I am a a fan of Isaiah harinstein um I just love how hard he plays I love his size he’s a legit 7 feet 250 he’s really big he was really good for the Knicks this year he was a great he was a plus minus darling and I think he’s a 25 minute a night solid solid player like I think if he and Walker were your two starters that’s great now neither or two two bigs that’s great but now neither of them can shoot the three but you know noran Derrick Lively and Daniel Gafford I’m not sure you have to be five out um I think Will Hardy would like to be five out some of the time but you don’t have to be five out I think that’s a little bit of a misnomer um but I yeah I think will would like to like the ability to go five out if he could all right where does Bryce sbog go in this year’s draft um players that can’t or can’t shoot and when does someone get the age where they can shoot a great question it’s all coming up as we continue on today’s edition of lock on Jazz Today’s Show is brought to you by prize picks priz picks.com lockon NBA for your first deposit match up to $100 prize picks is the match up to1 $100 prize fix.com lockon NBA let’s continue with your great questions I love these shows because you guys do a great job of kind of getting me to where we need to be in the middle of the playoffs why would anyone consider drafting a player who can’t shoot or play defense these guys get played off the floor in every game yep yep Derek Jones is staying on the floor a little bit um obviously last night was a whitewash and I told you coming in I thought the key stat for us to watch in all of the games was how many open threes uh both teams got and what they shot and that that in my opinion was going to dictate the um dictate the series um so let’s see by the way let’s take a check of that just so that I can back up what I said and see if it was actually turned out to be true or not um let me see dashboard uh that’s not what I want where’s what I want shooting nope huh tracking I don’t why can’t I find what I want huh I wasn’t planning on doing that um well I shouldn’t be doing something I wasn’t planning on doing that’s very bad at me right here wow that’s really weird I’m convinced that the NBA has changed their their uh shoot their numers right I’m flustered can you tell um H all right I’ll have to see if I can find that later um and I’ll tweet it out or something of the sort I was obviously you know a whitewash last night um I mean the real reason right now is because the mix and match in this draft is that the guys who can probably draft and shoot are too small like there’s just a butt statement on the EV on of everyone in this draft um I got a great question that I didn’t cut and paste about the flat draft so that’s the phrase everyone’s using about this draft right rightfully so that it’s a flat draft and the question is do we have any track record of other flat drafts I I didn’t have as much time as I wanted to to dig into this concept so we’ll we’ll look at it coming up next week I think it’s a brilliant concept like what can be learned about this I we’ve gone through I went through the draft history right recently and literally went through every single draft in NBA in the last 15 years of the NBA and graded the drafts out and gave every everyone gr every draft grades we can actually look at that and try to figure out what that means in regards to who has what you know what pick where and things like that so we I’ll try to dig that out and and see if I can find that and then look and see like what is a is there actually a flat draft my guess by the way my guess is g to be that that actually the flat draft is not does not exist so my guess on this is that when we look back at past NBA draft what we’re going to see is that every draft generally is as topheavy as every other NFL NBA draft just not as successful if that makes sense so you’d have to look at you know I I’ll do it I’ll break up each draft based on where their picks are and you know uh I have how how many you know whatever one is top 10 verse um and that draft was broken up the tens the you know the the top 10 players the 20 the 50 players and then where they sit and if there’s a flat draft it would mean that you know you’re having more success more rotation players or equal amount as goes you know frankly the 2020 draft is probably as good an example as a flat draft as we’ve had recently um in the reason I say that is because Desmond Bane and Jaden McDaniels and those guys I think were all late in that draft and very successful and so that 2020 draft is probably as good an example you started off with Anthony Edwards but then you know it’s pretty flat it’s probably pretty flat the five last guys are Jaden McDaniels and Desmond Bane are just as good as lamelo ball Patrick Williams and Isaac aorin anango and Killian Hayes and Obi topam and Denny Avida but it had Anthony Edwards the tops nobody would call it a flat draft but my general guess is it’s a great question is that there just aren’t actually as many flat drafts as you’d think all right where would Bryce Sensa go in this year’s draft super interesting question so the knee injury kept Bryce Sensa from having kind of a big draft day remember that but sensas draft numbers a year ago are 63rd percentile in transition 70th percentile in isolation 45th percentile in isolation scoring so average athlete because and his Rim percentage was 48% his pick and roll was at the 38th percentile which was not great he showed some signs of it last year but his shooting was 74th percentile spot up 95th percentile in catch and shoot and 87th percentile UNG guarded catch and shoot 82% on Tribble off the bouns now ironically enough the one thing he didn’t do very well is he didn’t shoot so I think he’ll be fine but a 66 235 pound knee in knee struggling guy does probably in this draft is T to you know he’s in the McCain Carter realm I would say but that knee injury could really scare you off right that that’s that’s a real question so I think he’s probably Bryce comes out in this draft I think he’s probably 15 to 20 10 to 15 and that’s kind of what everyone’s saying about this draft is that everybody is there uh this was the big question of yesterday’s show with the ACL injuri is it worth to pick to topic if he’s available I think it is worth it you have to figure out whether you think he’s going to shoot um is DeAndre eting the worst contract in basketball can you believe can we just all take a second and remember that eigor koskov who was the head coach of the Slovenian national team when at 18 years old this young kid named Luca donic carried Slovenia Slovenia to the Euro Cup Championship and showed that he was G to be one of the greatest offensive players in the history of the game and then he got his break is the first European since Dave black to be a head coach in the NBA and the owner told him they were not taking Luca donic and instead they were taking DeAndre 8 can you imagine what that moment must have been like for Igor kakashka my goodness of the next 10 finals how many will be represented by yic Luca and Wendy what about Anthony Edwards and Shay guildas Alexander and Zion Williamson don’t you think Shay’s getting there Chad hren gets a little better jayen that feels like that still got a chance right what about Aunt are we just closing the door on the Kawhi Leonard Paul George Steph Curry yeah probably LeBron James Kevin Durants Bradley Beals of the world are we just closing that door my guess is the West is represented in the finals if I had to make a guess I will take seven of the next 10 are represented by yic Luca and wemy that would be my guess that ant in Minnesota Shay getss in there and you never know what the Lakers do and the wild card on this is johnar does he ever come back at a different at a level anyone else am I forgetting anyone else Donovan Mitchell leading the LA Clippers who knows it’s always been my theory have a great one that is locked on Jazz have a wonderful Nikola Jokic was 44th in the draft. Seems to me there could be hidden gems that are out there. Karl Malone was 13th. Many Eastern Europeans are hungry to succeed and will have no problem working to get better.
Paul George and Kawhi Leonard don't play enough they sit too much. They are over hyped glorified Welfare recipient in millions
I think that not trading Lauri to a contender is not fair to Lauri. I think that we could get a player like a Jonathan Kumminga or GG Jackson. This draft we need to get both Castle and Edey or we need to get out.
