Celtics blowout Mavs in Gm 1: Porziņģis shines in return, Kyrie struggles | NBA | FIRST THINGS FIRST

oh live from New York it’s the show that was right yet again where are your picked the Celtics last time yeah so did you kind of you picked the Mavs i i i with great trepidation I picked the Mavs but then I did say this could be a Cel and all been is the mar Victory gra what happen game one want to do this after game there we in the first segment I’m going to expose Wild for the fraud that he is go for it just for the record I’ll have sunglasses did this in the Denver Minnesota series such an embarrassment you way too early televised embarrassment I wasn’t too early or down 2 I didn’t put let start this show it’s first things first I’m going to get mine I got 30 I did I have one assist yeah but I got mine uh best margin of Victory all time including the playoffs now if you listen to Modern media they will say that this graphic is flawed because of I don’t know offensive efficiency or something but it just is what it is line is beating everybody by 11 and beat the Mavs which are five seeds so I know it’s a little bit of an easy path to the finals even when you’re in the finals so this is what is so before you even can I just say something this is what is so irritating about you right now your Tweet if we have it hubs from last night where you did the SpongeBob thing you are the guy and we can show the tweet at some point you are the guy wild who is so publicly just effusively in love you cannot stop posting on Instagram how special and unique your significant other is I’ve never done I never do that just wait a moment please that’s actually you do that a lot I think very that is that is all correct but wait for it and then you break up and 3 weeks later you’re doing it again with someone else hey the heart wants the heart America saw you all year talk about how there was a historically great unbeatable team true and it wasn’t Boston in the west and then all of America saw you during the Conference Finals have so little confidence in any team you wouldn’t make a pick and now you have been on Boston for six days you’re not at all right and you’re been Bost for six days and you’re like there was a eight some data what do you want I was a widower it’s not credible and now I’m in love again but go ahead and ask your question sorry BR but it’s just I’m just enjoying it back and forth did the blowout loss make you nervous so it didn’t make me nervous but I was impressed Brew Oh I thought Boston had a truly excellent two-way performance despite their alleged best player playing poorly and that is well we’ll see at the end of the series if Jaylen Brown has something to say about it like that’s not the the but what I thought Boston was exceptional I thought their they had used the nine days smartly developing a strategy to really pick apart not Dallas’s weaknesses but Dallas’s Tendencies they see that Dallas throughout the postseason has collapsed to the ball rather than leaving Defenders letting them play one-onone and Boston said perfect mhm we you know what I mean we don’t really even want to get to the rim we want to pretend we’re getting to the rim and then kick out and defensively Boston strategy of we are we have seen the lob stats how no team in the playoffs has more than 10 lobs except for the Mavs who have damn near 60 and we are shutting the water off on that and we are not going to treat Luca like he’s the most dangerous offensive player in the league even if he is if Luca gets 30 or 35 we are going to deal and we’re not going to let other people get involved that’s coaching that’s execution that is to to me defensively brew a testament to the fact they don’t really have a weak link defensively of those five guys and so I was very impressed by Boston I’m not worried because I think the Mavs will adjust and I think Luca is so far and away the best player in the series he will win a couple games by himself but i w i I’m not taking a thing away from Boston because I thought on both sides of the ball they were exceptional and it wasn’t as simple as they hit a million threes they had 16 threes which they did 50 times 5-0 50 times this year I agree Boston was great so I don’t want to take anything away from them but no I’m not worried at all as a guy that picked the Mavs in six this is what the Mavericks do what are they under Jason kid in game ones one and six and I remind you just a few couple months ago against the Clippers game one yeah they lose by 12 they Trail by as many as 29 Points Ka Leonard wasn’t even playing yeah that’s right it looked a lot like last night the second round Oklahoma City they lose by 22 they Trail by 25 in both of those series they adjust they win four the next five games so this is what they do secondly and we’re going to get to him I don’t think porzingis is going to do that every night all right he was phenomenal and I know like I said we to talk about him but he’s not going to do this every night his last series against Miami before he got hurt he had two really good games and two really poor games in which he shot two for 14 in the two bad games all right so the two other two games were great the next two games he shoots super 14 so he’s going to be up and down I think and Boston they’re due to give up this next game cuz they gave up game two against Miami they gave up game against Cleveland and they are not great at home in the playoffs 18 and 14 in the last three years in the playoffs at home 12 and eight under Missoula so that Dallas is fine uh but they were impressive last night they did what they should do Boston the Luca strategy kind of like we can’t stop you try to slow you down but if you get 40 I think the Celtics would have been okay with that I want your reaction to this stats via second Spectrum 209 passes since they started keep track of passes 10 years ago it’s the fewest passes the Mavs have had since they started keeping track it felt like luuka got down like you know what the best play is the guy who already has the ball shoots and I’m going to make it work do you think that’s like Luca is going to consciously start moving the ball around or start shooting more so no I think I I guess this is going to sound weird a little bit of both in this regard I know those sound contradictory I think that if they guard him exactly the same way in game two I I think Luca’s mentality will be okay I’m going to get 50 I’m not going to get 35 I if you are truly going to you try to man up against me I am going to force you out of it I also think hubs if we can show the open shots graphic the other thing is the the one assist is be like to your point it’s not just it’s and it’s also that now the Celtics to their credit you know generated more considerably more open shots but there was also there were a lot of of not as many as usual but what I would call potential assists that with open shots that were then just missed so the I didn’t look at the one assist as indicative of exactly just that Luca wasn’t passing I agree with you that but I think you only it was like the MS are like one for five so it’s not like they were one for 16 no no no that’s right I did feel like early on when it was still close and I even said this on the I couple radio show I was like it’s too much like early and and that was Boston guard him one-on-one if a team’s going to guard him oneon-one he’s going to take them to the basket you talked about him getting 50 in game two I think all he needs to do is don’t settle for the three if they’re going to guard you one he took 12 threes he was four for 12 he was eight for 14 from two which is not bad if he drives into the bucket first of all you get in the paint their instinct’s going to be the W that’s just the instinct when a guy gets close to the hoop then you can either kick it out or throw a l but you can’t just settle for the three-pointer he’s got to be in more attack mode instead of just shoot a lot mode okay meanwhile porzingis came off the bench there porzingis his numbers in the first half Brew I mean pretty good 18 points in 13 minutes had those two blocks trying to challenge porzingis at the rims un wise Brew are you giving Chris Toops your MVP after game one well he he was phenomenal there’s no ifss of buts about it and he turned the game like when he went in in the first quarter they were up by a point Y when he goes in with like 7 and 1 half minutes left in the in the first quarter and they go in a 25 to N Run to end the quarter and he had 11 points and two blocks during it so he was great I would say though if you want to give it to him because that that basically ended the game right there yeah I mean I know the Mad made their little run in the third quarter but that was pretty much the game but Jaylen Brown I I Jaylen Brown I’d say co-mvps because he he led the team with 20 two points he has six rebounds as well but his defense three blocks and then the two picks and we have them right here picks Luca’s pocket twice this this is the first one ends in a dunk and then the second one just straight up picking and that is demoralizing to a player and a team when your guy gets picked and yet it’s almost like a dunk it also it it invigorates your own and yeah it led to a dunk yeah right and it it invigorates your team so Jaylen Brown was and we know about the blocks he had at the rim and Nick you you kind of mentioned earlier he’s got the early lead not that it’s all about that for the Celtics it shouldn’t even be about that at all but he’s got the early lead for conference fin or Finals MVP because we don’t expect porzingis to play this way every game so he gets out to the no that there’s no question about that uh the case for porzingis hubs if we can show the first quarter versus the final three quarters if you feel like I do like this game was one in the first quarter and then the rest of the game now I things would have been different if Dallas if Boston didn’t have that lead I understand that but Dallas played him dead even the rest of the way quarters two through four it was 70- 69 Boston cooled off from three like they those numbers are even if you feel like the game was one in the first quarter then Chris stamps you know what I mean he was the reason for that so I understand that argument and p i Boston fans are probably like guys he averaged 20 points per game this wasn’t an aberant uh performance it’s 20 points in 21 minutes that makes it an aberant performance for his the for as little as his usage in minutes were for him to have that level of performance but I thought the best player for the Celtics last night was Jaylen Brown and I thought Jaylen was also fiery emotionally in a way that was infectious I I think by infectious do you think that Tatum felt some of that fire well here’s I mean we’ll get to Tatum I know the and Tatum had not only a rough game but an odd game from a demeanor perspective but here’s a a little small storyline here because I think Jaylen and Kyrie likely not only have a good relationship I think off the court they have a lot of similarities and I bet they have a real you know what I mean a real Bond basketball-wise however it should be noted that when Kyrie was there if you remember and Kyrie seemed to you know be doing press conferences sometimes that were just openly attacking the young guys the guy who then sometimes would do like a counter press conference like the respon of the State of Union on behalf of the young players was Jaylen Brown who would be like hey you know basically support those guys who a lot of whom are still there I felt Jaylen played that game with a bit of something to prove on a basketball personal level about Kyrie and about his place in the NBA about not being all NBA about what he had said about I never win anything defense he wants to right all of those he really is not decorated at all he got the one all NBA the best year he could have gotten it because it made him eligible for the supermax but then that almost got used against him because then people were like wow this guy is a 300 you know the biggest contract ever and I thought he was ferocious on both ends of the Court thought his blocks were great I thought the dunk he had in traffic was great so I thought he was the most impressive player but I understand the porzingis argument of they won the game in the first quarter and that’s why he’s was the MVP quickly looking ahead bro do you keep porzingis on the bench coming off the bench or you start him that’s a great question I would tend to start him I mean he started all the games this season so I will move him back into the lineup but look it works so well for them it’ll be interesting to to see what Missoula does okay finally Kyrie all right Kyrie’s lackluster performance the main reason the MS lost no I mean there were a lot of reasons they they got outscored by 27 points from three they only had nine assists so he was one of the big reasons but he wasn’t like the the main reason they lost but this better be I won’t even say an aberration because he has struggled against Boston but this better just be one bad game this can’t be the series I know we talked yesterday they beat Oklahoma City with Kyrie average in less than 16 points I don’t think they’re beating Boston if Kyrie can’t be great he and Luca but particularly Kyrie they have to be good oneon-one they can’t let Boston guard them oneon-one for this entire Series without making them pay because if they do Derek Jones and and he is one of the greatest leapers in the league but he was getting his shot paced it last night and and PJ Washington and Gafford and live they aren’t good enough to do it like oneon-one just take somebody and score they need Luke and Kyrie to set them up and to do that they got to draw double teams but Kyrie you mentioned it 0 and 11 against the Celtics in his last 11 games against them it does feel a little like they’re in his head when you look at his Pro production we got this graphic in the 11 games only 20 a game which is decent but for Kyrie it’s low field goal percentages low both from three and overall and in his last four playoff games Nick against the Celtics their 0 and for remember that dating back to Brooklyn he shot 35% 12% from three and averaged 14 points and you saw Kyrie I say it I’ve said it more than two dozen times he’s the greatest ball handler in NBA history he dribbles off his foot he’s stumbling at one point on the court can’t even stand up he hits the side of the backboard he throws a pass to nobody like that’s not Kyrie Irving that’s not the guy everybody’s talking about the most skilled player ever and so he he got to make sure this is not in his head I like this demeanor after the game he didn’t seem frazzled or shook but he he got to play better listen I think he’ll bounce back but I think he’s going to have a very tough series I know it sounds contradictory that I was very I’m very confident in the Mavs but I also said yesterday that I don’t think Kyrie is going to average 20 a game this series I I know a lot of people think that means they can’t win I don’t I I did you know I don’t feel that way obviously but this is being a Drew holiday is the best defender in the league for people under 66 he is the best and if Drew is not on you you’ve got Derek white who’s not the best but is on the short list all defensive caliber player and they know how to play against him and so I just don’t think this is going to be a Kye Irving series with that said it doesn’t have to be a Kyrie Irving series for for him to play better than this and for the moments because in the third quarter yesterday when Luca was trying to singlehandedly get them back in the game he had two we can show them to you wide wide open so you can’t see the score here these are that was to cut it to 10 and this one right here is to the next one I should say is to cut it to eight and you the so he those were the F minute Mark and the three minute Mark of uh the third quarter when Luca was seeming trying to will him back once Luca did cut it to eight himself Kyrie then had the traveling violation right after Lively had the traveling violation so I I think for the Mavs to win this series he only needs one A+ game like one game where he goes for 30 plus yeah I think he only needs one of those games but this has to be his worst game to to the point you’re you know what I mean he can’t have a bunch of games left this where he is struggling from start to finish of it for them to be able to do it and so I I thought he was working defensively the Mavs I don’t think the Mavs defense was actually that bad I think Boston scoring 107 you can deal with I think this was a Mavs off foot the gas too the I mean they took their foot off the gas with four minutes left I mean they you know what so what would they have scored one I think they would the Mavs will sign up for around this level of shooting this level of offensive production from Dallas or from Boston most of the series I just think this is a really tough matchup for Kyrie and I think it is important that he keeps the demeanor that he has and that they he can at least draw attention to your point to get other guys going just quickly Brew before we go we’re going to talk about Tatum after the break did you think there was anything in Kyrie feeling like he was like welcoming more noise he’s like I thought I was going to be louder feels like he wants a little bit of more energy from the crowd or you think it’s just nothing no you you mean think he’ll play off like if they more it was just interesting he kind of is EI he was either dissing The Crowd like a he didn’t bother me I actually thought it was louder or he’s inviting more energy for game two I think it was a defense mechanism I think it was like y’all didn’t bother me I just played badly but it wasn’t because well and it should be noted the best game he’s played against Boston in this 11 game losing streak I think he scored 39 was the game game one of the close sweep the game where he flipped the crowd off and did all that stuff that was you know he scored 39 in then was 39 or 36 okay 30 I think two two times right in one show thanks for watching subscribe here to get more from the show and to check out clips from other shows on FS1

  1. Boston in 5

We going 2-0. Losing game 3 winning 4 and 5 and walking away.

They can say whatever just like every pundit is going for the Mavs. Keep that same energy if you go down 0-2 on Sunday.

  2. Enjoy watching Ky, wish he was on the Lakers, but u CAN'T say Ky is the best dribbler in history. That's an illogical statement and an untestable statement. Maybe he's the best in the last however many years (maybe), but the best all time, u cant logically say that. The "Most skilled" is just flat out wrong and fxxlish. He's not, and he's not even close to the most skilled. He is probably the best at lay ups, but thats only one skill, and even IF he is the best dribbler on top of the best at lay ups, he's still not close to the most skilled.

  3. Other than the turnovers, tatum played brillantly. He set up everyone and hit the boards and made the extra pass. Ask lebron if Tatum is elite. Dont ask nick and broussard. Their is a reason tatum gets doubled every play.

  4. This is why I hate media. They convinced the public that the Celtics are losing in the finals because they had the easiest path to the finals?? They’re supposed too!! They were the number 1 seed with the best record in the entire NBA!!! And then the public without creating their own opinions goes oh yeah the Celtics had the easiest path. Dummies

  5. this is the most intartaining baskeball show on tv for sure. first take and undisputed are almost unwatchable anymore. stephen a and skip just take themselves too seriously and these dudes just have fun

  6. This the only main stream media show that sounds like 3 homies kick ish tlkin sports it don’t seem scripted like others…

  7. Ive been handicapping sports for 3 decades and while unexplainable its a death sentence for that team when most r on the same team especially when it dont make much sense… You have to have mixed picks on sides and its even worse w public dogs its an automatic loss usually!! with all the HATE on the Celtics and Boston teams w jealousy in general and most people picking Dallas w Beantown such a huge favorite where even half picking Dallas would b kiss of death this is gonna b Boston just based on that, I got the receipts to prove it. It happens in all sports.

  8. Nick, straight-faced: "I dont think Kyrie will average 20 a game, and i dont think Mavs cant win (like that)." When you created a tv persona by defrauding idiots in tv land, and now sit pretty extolling brain farts.

  9. They're putting 3 guys on JT every time he touches the ball lmao what is he supposed to do. Ofc Luka is scoring, they're playing him 1 on 1

  10. There's a reason KP struggled against the Heat. Bam was top 3 in DPOY and has been hovering at the top defensively for years. They don't have that on the Mavs.

  11. Unless the Mavs have a Bam sitting on the bench they’re cooked. No one they have can hang with Unicorn. And Nick saying Luka will force them out of man is crazy, he’s not getting 50 when it matters. In a blowout sure.
