2024 NBA DRAFT PLAYER PROFILE: DaRon Holmes II, Dayton

Draft night age: 21.8
Height: 6 ft 11 in
Wingspan: 7 ft 1 in
Weight: 220 lbs

Prez’s Sales Pitch: A statistical marvel of a center used as the ball handler in inverted pick-and-rolls, and the shooter in pick-and-pops, face-ups, post-ups, and rolls to the rim. His skillset for a big man is truly emblematic of modern basketball. Whichever team takes advantage of that could find themselves in possession of a former college Defensive Player of the Year who shot nearly 40% from deep last season and has the skill to drive on both opposing bigs and smaller mismatches.

Questions about their projection: All those center-dribbling possessions might be Mickey Mouse college experiments that fail in the NBA. He shot well on threes last year, but his shot is funky and the sample remains small. He remains undersized and lithe, likely to get bullied by some wings and many bigs.

I feel like he’ll be gone before we pick anyway. Certainly an intriguing prospect. But I’m not clear on something…how is he undersized at 6’11, I thought that was about average?

I’m a Dayton guy and I think Holmes is overrated. Really wish he stuck around another year and bulked up a bit.

i don’t think they’d pick him to follow in the footsteps of ihart/mitch as an anchor, but as a curveball rotational center. would be interesting cuz he can do alotta hand offs and floor spreading, kind of like when we were forced to use lineups with precious at the 5

I see why people are intrigued by DaRon but the FO has shown they don’t care about 5s 3p shooting unless they’re true floor spacers, of which there are few, and a guy who shot 2.5 per game for 1 season, and has questionable form doesn’t scream that to me. They also don’t give centers the leeway to cook with the ball so I don’t think there’s any chance they draft him and I’m happy about that tbh. Besides Clingan who obv wouldn’t be available, Missi is the one Knicksy big to me in terms of his build, energy, screening, potential rim protection and attitude. He’s young so don’t know if they draft him but he’d be the only big id expect them to pursue.
