according to an NBA general manager the New York Knicks are 100% expected to pursue a Carl Anthony towns trade if the Minnesota Timberwolves make him available we’ll unpack that around the corner but fans that the Knicks have been consistently linked to a towns trade and I don’t think that’s going to out anytime soon but I don’t really think it’s going to happen and I’m not sure how realistic it is at this point the question is why would the Timberwolves want to trade Carl Anthony towns and it’s because of the way that their cap space and their cap sheet sits right now they have the highest paid team in the NBA they have $273 million used up in cap space that’s number one in the NBA they have the least amount of cap space they’re already $17 million over the first apron and they’re already $6.5 million into the second apron and we know that Carl Anthony towns will show you his contract in his second is an extremely long one with a lot of money due maybe they try to trade him for a couple expiring salaries maybe bogey I’m not sure but I do think the Timberwolves may have to shake things up due to their cap sheet and the way it sits this Eastern Conference general manager told heavy.com that the team the Timberwolves are in flux they want to keep building off what they did this year but they just can’t afford it so I would think it is 100% expected that if they do move on from towns when the dust settles the New York Knicks are going to be there in OMG my least favorite song and dance the Carl Anthony Town trade rumors to our New York Knicks the Knicks are always going to be linked to cat and for one reason and one reason only he is a part of the ca a mafia and if you know you know if you’re reped by CA you got a one in 10 chance of playing for the New York Knicks not an actual statistic but it does feel like it it just sounded good right there but seriously cat’s going to always be linked to this team he has ties to the area he grew up a Nicks fan he has a relationship with Leon Rose and he is repped by the mafia CAA so before I share any more of my thoughts we break down stats we talk about a potential trade could be we take a look at the cap sheet for the New York York Knicks if they do trade for cat my question to you is simple do you want them on the Knicks do you want cat wearing the orange and blue type y for yes Type n for no let’s just get it out of the way trading for towns makes absolutely no sense for the New York Knicks on multiple multiple levels one I’m not trading Julius Randall for Carl Anthony towns I’m just not doing it so quit asking I’m not making it happen I think Carl Anthony towns is a solid player and I think in the right system he could make some sense I actually do think a little bit of basketball sense could be made if he was a part of this team maybe the Knicks could use another big man that can shoot but the gravity that Julius Randall has already kind of replicates that on the court you compare the two players because if you are going to trade for cat that means Randle is out the door and he’s heading to Minnesota Randle I think is just a better player at this point in their careers you look at the stats side by side for this past season cat he averaged 21.8 points per game Randall 24 rebounds per game that used to be an area where Carl Anthony Town’s one of the best in the business not So Much Anymore maybe a difference because doesn’t have to do it as much with t uh with Rudy goar and Nas Reed also playing but Randall beats him in that department randle’s also a better playmaker he passes better he takes care of the ball a little bit better as well five assists tonight for Randall just three for towns the efficiency from the field slightly points to the direction of cat 50.4% compared to 47.2% and the main reason anybody ever talks about trading Randle for towns is because of the ability that cat has to stretch the floor he shoots north of 41% from downtown whereas Randall this past year is just at 31.1% so I understand why anyone would say Marshall we want more space for Brunson we want more Shooters while keeping size I get that and I can rock with that but I also don’t really believe in the fact that Carl Anthony towns is going to be a major differen maker for the New York Knicks when it counts the most which is the playoffs where Randall has struggled before and yes cat has been better than Randle in the playoffs but I think it’s easier for Cat when he’s playing next to Anthony Edwards and he’s got Nas Reed and he’s got Rudy goar and he’s got Jaden McDaniels and he’s got Mike Conley Julius Randle had nobody on his team when he was trying to play against the Atlanta Hawks he was also injured and dealing with injuries against the minesa uh excuse me against the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat last year cat in the playoffs this year in the 16 games averaged 19 points per game nine rebounds shot well from the field I thought as the playoffs went on he struggled and he really struggled in the Western Conference finals against the Dallas Mavericks until that series was already uh Out Of Reach I don’t know man I’m just not the biggest towns fan I think um I think what I’m not saying has already been pushed across the screen to all you I just don’t want him on my team I don’t I don’t want to have to root for Carl Anthony towns on top of the fact I don’t want to pay him $49 million this year I definitely don’t want to pay him $53 million the year after that and I for sure don’t want to pay him $ 57.6 million in 2026 and I would be in shambles if I had to pay Carl Anthony towns $615 million in 2027 and then you couple that with the fact of where the New York Knicks are already at and their committed salary they would just be the Minnesota Timberwolves to 2.0 the highest salary in the league they’d be an apron team and they would be on the brink of being a second apron team you look at the committed salary for the Knicks right now $136 million that does not include the OG and an Obi player option which he is going to decline so he’s still got to resign OG you still got to resign hartenstein and Pressa is still out there so you’re going to be very very close to being a first apron team and I know for a fact the Knicks do not want to enter that second apron this off season I watched an awesome YouTu video from Nicks Film School Caper no cap cap shout out to Jonathan Macker shout out to Jeremy Cohen I’m going to link that video in the comments I actually push everybody to go watch that video they did a really good job of breaking down the cap and looking at different scenarios Jeremy he is a cap I would say genius and you know what I’m GNA I’m going to tell you uh I’m G to tell you why the Knicks should not trade for cat just like he did this photo comes from their show when you look at it this is what the Nick’s cap sheet would look like for for the 2024 2025 season if the New York Knicks were to trade for cat this off season and that would include them giving up Buon bonovich and Julius Randle you’re already a first apron team if you add Carl Anthony towns this roster while resigning ogn and Obi and bringing back Isaiah hartenstein you’re on the brink of being a second apron team and that’s only with 11 players on the roster you got to have 14 the New York Knicks are not doing this trade they don’t want to be a second apron team the path of rebuilding this roster that Leon Rose has chosen to travel down is one where he wants to be in a spot where he can make the move when the move becomes available whether it’s Giannis whether it’s somebody else when that Superstar becomes available Leon Rose wants to have a treasure chest full of assets that puts him in a position to pounce at the opportunity but if you’re a second apron team you’re not going to be able to make that type of trade because of the ramifications that that has on your team building of of just going out and building a team you’re not allowed to use a pre-existing trade exception that’s same with the first apron you there’s some wiggle room in the first apron for you to still make a trade the second apron though not so much you can’t take back more money in a trade so if I want to trade for a $50 million player I got to give up $51 million and you’re also not allowed to aggregate contracts and that’s the biggest hiccup in that second apron for example in the old CBA if I wanted to trade for a $50 million player I could trade out two players making $25 million a year to get that done you can’t do that now if you’re in the second apron it has to be a one for one swap you can’t aggregate contracts meaning it’s almost impossible to trade for a superstar that makes a Max contract if you’re not really sending out a Max contract and the New York Knicks they don’t have any of those players on this roster the only thing I think that would make sense of trading for cat is just to use them again to trade down the line because you’re going to be a second apron team and you can use that salary with picks to make a major trade that’s the only way that I really see it overall towns may be a nice basketball fit the New York Knicks could probably benefit from adding another shooter at a big man spot just diversifying that position and the way they go about affecting a basketball game I R is going to shoot better from three this year with Brunson and OG on the floor and less responsibility on him but outside of the three-point shooting from towns there’s no real reason I want him and even though it’s a nice fit there are way too many factors that make this unrealistic the money the apron and I’m not adding picks to trade for Julie uh adding picks to Rand to trade for cat and it’s probably for sure that Minnesota would want Randall picks and bogey to get a cat trade done so for that I am out on trading for Carl Anthony towns make sure you are following me over on social media
