joined today by Greg Schwarz of bleach report he’s covered the NBA for a long time there you can find him on Twitter at Greg Schwarz be are you can also pick up a wine and gold winner the best moments of the Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 Championship he wrote it you can find that on his Twitter be sure to go check that out yesterday’s show Greg we put together a bunch of Trades tried to come up with who would say no between the Cavs and a couple of other teams you know we had LeBron on there we had Mcall bridges on there we had some really good trades we’ve got three more to dive into today you put together the trades for yesterday’s show I’ve put together the trades for today’s show so let’s get started this first one we’ve got the Cavs receiving Brandon Ingram and Larry Nance Jr so you know we we ended yesterday’s show with a kid from akan coming home we’re starting Today’s Show with a different kid from akan coming home the Pelicans received Jared Allen Caris LeVert and George Nang um I think that this is a deal that it helps solve the Cavs problems on the wing I don’t think Brandon Ingram is you know a perfect basketball player by any stretch of the imagination but I think that he is certainly someone that is a little similar to you know the ways that we’ve talked about Darius Garland where he sort of in a by low stage of his career now the difference with Ingram is you’re going to have to pay him pretty soon and that’s a big difference between him and Garland but I think that this is a deal that could solve some of the Cavs issues on the wing um also the Pelicans really could use a guy like jar Allen when you add together the rest of the pieces it it really makes this deal work financially what did you think of this one when when you first saw it yeah I think Brandon Ingram is going to be a player that’s going to be very available for the Pelicans he seems like the obvious piece that they’re going to move out and try to either get a point guard or a center um they got Trey Murphy the third waiting to come in Off the Bench it be their new starting small forward so I think that that makes a lot of sense um Ingram’s a guy I’ve liked to as a potential fit for the Cavs even before they got Donovan Mitchell I just like that he’s got the size he’s got the scoring chops he’s become a better passer um you kind of brought up my main concern and that’s money because he’s got one year left on his deal uh he’s basically in the same boat as Donovan Mitchell where he can sign a four-year extension but a max deal is going to cost you $29 million over four years I don’t think Ingram is a max player it doesn’t matter if I think he’s a max player I think he’s gonna think he’s a max player um he’s guy he’s only made one All-Star team um you know but he’s you know his offensive role he’s had to take a step back you know with Zion and see and the other guys there so I think it’s a decent enough fit for the Cavs um Larry n Jr is one of my favorite Cavaliers of all time um in 10 years of like being a credential reporter he’s probably my favorite player to talk to he’s just super down to earth great guy gives back to the community um and he’s very self-aware he’s funny like he’s just a great locker room presence so I would be thrilled to bring him back I think he’d be happy now that he’s a dad he can raise his daughter in North North East Ohio so I think he’d be happy with that um for the Pelicans Jared Allen is is awesome and I think they’d be happy to have him over Jonas valunas who’s a free agent my question is do the Pelicans run into the same problem that the Caps have in terms of spacing because if you think Evan Moy doesn’t shoot threes Zion Williamson made six three-pointers all of last season he was six of 18 in his 70 games and that number is not going up I thought maybe after his rookie sophomore year maybe he’ll start shooting threes I think his first game in his career he made like three or four threes he hit four I remember he had four threes in that first G yeah and oh wow he can do this and he’s gonna like Bully ball people with the rim and then he’s Inc it’s been four years and he hasn’t shot since um I think I think you know spacing wise that could be an issue if I mean maybe he commits to it I don’t think he has a badl looking shot like you know he can he can make him but he just doesn’t shoot him um so I think spacing could be an issue but if if you’re New Orleans boy what a defensive upgrade getting Jared Allen over yonas Valen junis um Caris Le is the guy that OB he could help him he’s goingon to come off the bench for him uh gives him a little bit of salary Le George yangang is the guy that gives him that spacing you know Cavs have Larry n Jr and Dean Wade that could space the floor for them um I like this I just don’t know that New Orleans says yes because of the spacing and I would need to know what Ingram is going to sign for if he’s going to sign for $35 million a year great sign me up if he wants the full Max and he wants 50 million a year you’re paying Donan 50 and you’re paying I mean you still have uh darus Garland in this trade so you’re paying and you’re gonna sign Evan Moy like you’re looking at this where you could have four and I I understand that Evan Mo’s max deal is a smaller one than the other three but you’re looking at or I guess not small Darius it’s still you’re looking at four guys on max deals for a team that has not made it out of the second round yeah MoneyWise it scares me I like the fit I just don’t know financially if it works for Cleveland and I don’t know spacing wise if it works for pelic I do wonder if the spacing element for the Pelicans is different because you know obviously Zion is a non-shooting I I guess big you can call him even though he’s only you know 6′ seven he’s a non- shooting big but because he’s such an explosive athlete and just the style of his game I do wonder if that plays a little bit differently than it does with Jarett and Evan in Cleveland like I do wonder if those situations are different because Zion when he is healthy um which is the caveat you have to throw in all the time with him but I do wonder if because of that that spacing equation is just a little bit different because of how bouncy he can be like I I think that’s something to think about too as you look through this trade that’s that’s a good point and there’s a lot of times that Zion will operate in a point guard role there and Evan obviously does not operate in a point guard role in Cleveland um and as a lot of times he will take guys off the dribble so that’s a good point I just you know having two non-shooters on the court uh especially in today’s NBA scares me a little bit Yeah I absolutely 100% get that and I I think that’s part of the reason why and you know to preface this discussion we should mention that there have been reports recently that the Cavs aren’t as open for business um in terms of trading their core four as some people thought they might be um certainly myself included um that is something that when they begin the season in mid October if the core for are all in the starting lineup that’s when I’ll believe it but I I still think that you know there’s there’s plenty of time and not not going to judge this team’s offseason before it begins I think that is something that we do have to mention I should have mentioned earlier in the show but that’s something that’s worth thinking about as you talk about these deals that hey you know they’ve talked about at least privately wanting to keep that group together I just don’t know how realistic it actually is and and I it’s kind of a I’ll believe it when I’ll see it type of thing Greg Today’s Show brought to you by prize picks where you could turn $10 into ,000 in just a single game watching your favorite sports this summer so the way prize picks works is you can make a lineup in as little as 60 seconds you’re going to pick between two and six stat projections of players to go either over or under sound simple it is simple if you’re looking for promotions to prize picks they’ve got you covered they lower select players odds on Tuesday it’s going to make it a lot easier for you to pick over and be correct which is hey that’s what we’re going for here also on Friday unfortunately you put together a losing lineup it it happens from time to time I don’t want you to put together losing lineups I want you to put together winning lineups but if you put together a losing lineup on a Friday you can get your entry fees back that’s one of the good things that price Pi does um they are America’s number one fantasy sports app over 5 million active users when the finals are over the hoop action doesn’t stop there either at prize picks women’s basketball just getting started they’ve got young Stars obviously Caitlyn Clark Angel Reese playing right now this summer you can make some cash on their projections prize picks is the place to go download the app today use code locked on NBA that’s l c Ed d o n NBA for a first deposit match up to $100 prize picks pick more pick less it’s that easy so the next deal that I’ve got here is the Cavs it’s sort of an expansion off of the deal that we just saw but it’s getting a third team involved where the Cavs instead of receiving Brandon Ingram he’s still in this deal but Brandon Ingram and George Yang are going to go to Portland Jared Allen and Carris Levert are going to go to the Pelicans and then the Cavs get back Malcolm Brogden and Jeremy Grant I think this is something that if and I do think for this deal to make sense it has to be one where Darius Garland’s getting sent elsewhere in a different deal like maybe this is you know we talked on yesterday’s show about uh Mcall Bridges trade for Darius Garland maybe that happens and you’ve got a starting five then if both of these trades happen you know you can have Malcolm Brogden start or maybe bring him off the bench but Donovan Mitchell Max struce Bridges Jeremy Grant and Evan Moy like that could be your starting five there and then bringing Malcolm Brogden Off the Bench to be that Sixth Man to alleviate Donovan Mitchell because you know I think that while he can be really great as a as a point guard I don’t think he could play all of his minutes at point guard like if he’s playing 65 or 70% of his minutes at point guard and the other minutes at the two I think that’s probably the sweet spot for him and I think that this deal sets up for that I do wonder how the rest of the how Portland specifically would feel about this yeah this is this is the one you sent it to me and I I had to look over it about you know five different times because I was like I think there’s something here uh I so for Portland I don’t know why but I want to start with them uh Brandon Ingram I think is like exactly what they need because they have these young guards they have scoot Henderson they have Shaden sharp they have anony Simons um and then they have you know DeAndre Eon at Center uh I I think that makes a lot of sense now you’ve got a wing that can score you don’t have to ask scoot Henderson to come in and score you know 20 points per game next year I think that makes a lot of sense for them again money matters is you know Ingram gonna resign there but if you’re getting off Jeremy Grant’s steel that kind of opens up a lot of future money to resign Brandon Ingram so I think that makes sense for Portland um Cleveland I really like those two players coming in for Cleveland um Malcolm brogen weather he’s a starter like you said if you move Darius Garland or if he’s your sixth man I he was Sixth Man of the Year two years ago in Boston uh he was really good in both roles for Portland I can’t believe Portland kept him all year I felt so bad for him I thought he was gonna be traded at the deadline sure I was stunned he finished the year with the Blazers oh jeez and he he never said a word so good for him you know he’s a good a good guy good teammate uh he never complained but he’s entering the final year of his contract making about $22 million um so I I think he’s definitely a guy that’s gonna be on the trade market this offseason they got to trade him while they can get something for him um you know in this trade you you’re moving Evan Moy to Center fulltime Jeremy Grant’s going to be your full-time four I think he’s a perfect full-time four um I remember talking to somebody in the Portland organization when they first got Jeremy Grant and they were just thrilled um you know with his defensive versatility with his AB ability to shoot threes can be a 20 point per game score for you and he’s not a guy that dominates the ball either he can kind of play within a system we saw him do that in Oklahoma City we saw him do that in Denver uh he’s just a really good highlevel role player um he makes a lot of money uh he does he’s not cheap he’s not cheap um good for him he got that bag right before Damen Lillard said peace out and left that those five years 160 million uh the max I think that they could give him so um yeah’s you’re going to pay him about 30 million a year going forward I it’s not great but it’s not terrible especially when you got guys that are going to be making you know 60 and 70 you know the next couple years so um I I like this I hate to give up Jared Allen if you noticed in all of my trades I didn’t send Jared Allen out in any of them um because Evan being a full-time five I think is his future but his present at that position still scares me um but I think overall Cleveland is a better team you have better spacing you have better shooting you have better passing better probably defensive versatility um just because you’ve got Grant and uh and Mobly as you’re starting front Court um you you miss a little bit of Rim protection there but um if I’m in the Cavs I definitely think about this I maybe ask for a draft pick um coming from somewhere maybe New Orleans uh maybe Portland just because I I I think that you know Grant’s contract is a lot uh but just in terms of pure players and fit with the Cavs uh yeah I really like this deal I do too um Jeremy Grant I’ve talked about on the show is maybe not someone that moves the needle for me as much as he probably should for how good he is I do wonder and I think it’s been a little difficult because of what Portland has been I do wonder what he would look like where you know he’s he’s been asked to be at times a lot of he’s been asked to be in a lot of different roles in his career right like you remember him leaving Denver to go to Detroit because he wanted to try and just be the guy and that didn’t work for him but I wonder what is it going to look like if he’s not even the number two because I do think here in this situation you could be looking at it where Evan MO is the number two option offensively and Jeremy Grant kind of plays that that third option where he can be the go-to guy on some certain second units I wonder how that would look in actuality yeah especially do you want to be paying you know $30 million to a guy that’s averaging 12 points per game because that that might be where he’s at eventually if you keep Donovan if you have Darius if you have Evan taking the next step um yeah his scoring would definitely go down um the question is how much and would he still be worth that money because I he’s he is a two-way player you’re not just paying for him just for um just for that that that offense but um you know he’s he doesn’t rebound well um he’s not much of a passer but he’s the guy that can shoot threes face up uh defend multiple positions and I think he’s he’s just a really good modern NBA player so you mentioned something about Evan mooy that I want to just dive into a little bit but you talked about how you think his Future’s at the five what concerns you about him going into year four potentially maybe not playing the five fulltime but the way I mentioned with Donovan playing 65 to 70% of his minutes at point guard what would concern you about Evan playing 65 or 70% of his minutes at Center instead of power forward uh his frame um his shoulders are about as wide as mine I don’t have wide shoulders I’m not Danny Cunningham I’m not you know pack I don’t have wide shoulders either so I I mean I’m not I’m not a former college football star like you so um that’s fair uh I you know I was a high school golfer so I I have more of a a Mobly frame so I he just his frame scares me a little bit I don’t think he’s ever you know going to be a guy that’s going to be able to put on a lot of muscle we saw him have a couple injury concerns this year I’m just he scares me a little bit just because he is still pretty young he is still pretty skinny um and there’s a lot of you know as much as the NBA has move to smaller faster you know look at look at wemi um I just think that you know there’s still the IDS the yices the Carl anthy towns the Rudy go Bears that boy they’re going to be beating up on him every night and I think offensively great no problems uh defensively I think his primary strength is just defending on the perimeter his versatility I don’t think it’s just straight as a rim protector guarding guys one-on-one in the paints so I think that’s his future I just I’d be hesitant to throw him into the fire as a full-time five next year well I’ve got one more deal um he wouldn’t have to play the full-time five in this one he could uh he could have I think a very interesting role could the cry for Carl Anthony towns we discuss that next right here on lock on Cavs but when you’re hiring for your small business maybe you are a small business owner you’re looking n NBA and you can post your job for free terms and conditions do apply so Greg the last trade we’ve got for you the Cavaliers make a trade this is going to be a three-way trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Atlanta Hawks so the Cavs here would receive Carl Anthony towns self-proclaimed greatest shooting big man of all time Mike connley Jr DeAndre hunter from the Hawks the Wolves would get Darius Garland back Carris levers and a first round pick um it’s from the Hawks it’s a Sacramento pick it is somewhat protected and the Hawks here would receive Jarrett Allen um I think that this is a deal where if you have concerns about Evan Moy playing the five fulltime I think that this could kind of Be the Best of Both Worlds because you’ve still got while Carl Town’s not the best defensive Center that we’ve ever seen by any stretch of the imagination is uh also not a small body which is just worth bringing up here I think that this if you want to go all in on playing Donovan Mitchell at the point guard fulltime I don’t know a better offensive setup than having yes Evan Mobley you can still play two bigs but one of those bigs is a really really good shooter from outside I think that this could solve a ton of problems and then you throw in DeAndre Hunter on the wing too I think that this could do a ton for the Cavs specific particularly offensively all right so I got a couple questions for you what what is the Hawks planet center moving forward if they got Jared down they still have Clint capella for one more year they have Ana kongu is this just like okay we’re you know we know that Capella’s going towards free agency and we’re looking for a long-term deal or what’s their plan there um in this universe I didn’t look for another trade for Clint capella but in this universe capella would be traded elsewhere um I I very quickly looked for a four team deal that sent Clint capella to a different team but I then realized hey this doesn’t actually affect the Cavs that’s Atlanta’s problem if they want to trade for Jared Allen here um and find a different place for Clint capella to go play his basketball they can do that on their own time that’s true all right good point all right well I know you like I know you like Mike Conley because you’re a huge Buckey fan I know I know that about you so you’re probably you’re probably excited to get a Bucky in here so yeah I’m all supportive of um so one of the exercises I did was I I tried to identify bigs that would be good fits next to Evan mle if Jared Allen isn’t the guy moving forward um obviously you need a big that can shoot but you also need a big that can play center at times if you need him to and there’s not many Bigs like that I mean it’s like Christof porzingis is one Boston’s not trading him even though he’s he’s hurt all the time um Carl Anthony towns is one of those guys and so I think he fits positionally where you can mix and match him at the four or the five um depending on you know what team you’re going up against so I think that’s a really good front Court pairing um he likes to shoot a lot of Threes uh so that that would you know if if Evan Mobley never wants to shoot a three again he doesn’t have to because Carl Anthony towns will shoot 20 a gamees so that works um con I mean I love Mike connley um probably because he and I are the same age uh but also because I mean look look at what he did to Minnesota like ever since he got there they just took off and whatever team he’s on they win and he doesn’t have to score 20 points a game he don’t have to put up All-Star numbers but they just win and I know he’s nearing the end of his the end of his career he’s probably got a couple years left his contract goes down to about $9 million next year which is fantastic um that kind of helps offset what you’re paying towns um and DeAndre Hunter he’s all right I think you know maybe he’s more of a salary match guy in here um he’s you know he makes about 2223 million each year he did shoot over 38% from three last year was a career high uh he’s fine like he’s he’s fine uh so he could be a starter he could be a six-man for you um my problem is I I guess well not problem my concern is you’re trading away two of your core four and if this doesn’t work you’re in trouble you need this to work because then you know what’s your next option trading ofo uh and you don’t want to do that so um towns I want you to tell me about Carl Anthony towns because you know him better than I do you covered the Timberwolves I do not view him as a supermax player and he is starting a four-year $220 million contract I hate that contract I think that could be one of the worst contracts in all of basketball it’s going to hit $60 million at the end it’s incredible it is incredible what he’s getting paid so you you tell me do you think he’s somebody that could worth that or is that just you know trying to find a front Court partner with every I don’t think he’s ever going to be worth the money that he’s getting paid I don’t but that also I don’t think makes him a bad player right like I think that there’s a a very wide margin because and this is one of the things that I sort of dislike about the NBA and I’m not the biggest Carl Anthony towns fan in the world um I will say I think he’s matured a lot since I was covering the wolves and since I was there certainly he’s a tremendous Talent he’s never really been able to put it all together I think that there have been certainly some some issues with him where he he far too often can find himself whining with the refs um he commits a lot of really dumb fouls he can play you out of a basketball game just as easy as he can hit seven threes in the game and help you win it he’s never going to be worth that money but that doesn’t mean he’s not a perennial All-Star caliber player he’s not a franchise number one but you’re not asking him to be you’re asking him to be and to be fair Minnesota’s no longer asking him to do that either um you’re asking him to be a sidekick that can hit a lot of Threes that can space the floor that can be an offensive Talent maybe that means you know Evan Moy doesn’t ever develop into the offensive talent that we think he can be but I think if you want to play two bigs and have Evan develop offensively this is the avenue to do it um just because I think that that shooting next to him is so valuable and you don’t have to play him at Center all of the time because Carl is very capable at playing that position even if I think he’s more of a four and a five’s body he’s still capable of being a a center and then the rest of this deal like you know I think Mike connley Jr just helps winning wherever he goes the fact that he played with Donovan Mitchell in Utah is a boost to it too and then from the Minnesota angle to this that ownership ownership situation is is very tricky and this deal sneakily shaves like $8 million off of what they would be just like their cap figure and then how much does that shave off of potential luxury tax numbers too like that is part of the thinking here is yeah maybe maybe they’re not getting the best player back but they’re saving so much money by doing this yeah oh this is an A+ for Minnesota I love this trade for Minnesota yeah like you got k bs expiring contract you’re getting off $220 million for towns if they do nothing they’re going to be a second apron team this year yeah and they I mean maybe they win a Championship they came close this year but I just think that’s a great trade uh for Minnesota I I would love that if I was the wolves um the Hawks obviously if they get Jared Allen and all it cost them as DeAndre Hunter and a pick that’s a great trade for Atlanta too if I’m Cleveland is paying $150 million a year 150 Carl Anthony towns Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley well let’s let’s just do 175 and add in DeAndre Hunters it’s what 175 million uh for that core four I mean 200 with Max shw so is is that does that get you a championship I think you’re you might be a better team tomorrow than you were today but that’s so much money tied up for so long in a core that is still a little big heavy a little short on wings and con’s you know maybe plays one or two more years uh I probably ultimately say no to that deal but I I’m I’m intrigued by it but just Financial I don’t think I could do that one hey as long as I was able to get you to say you were intrigued by it and you had to think about it that was the goal of thisise right like that’s that’s all I was going for I don’t know that I would say yes to it either truthfully like when I was putting it together it’s a lot of money for Carl Anthony towns man it is like that is not one of the better contracts in basketball it’s just not no and especially if you’re paying another guy in the front Court 40 plus million dollars 100 million I mean that’s what the Timberwolves are doing right now and you know they’re good but yeah I don’t know that’s a lot of money yeah it’s it’s a ton of money Greg thank you so much for hopping on the last two days here in lockdown Cavs loved getting to go through this Salary cap issues would kill a KAT trade.
Man if they had Mitchell, Lebron and Kat for a year or two. Imagine that. I wouldn’t want them to trade away Mobley. Not that he has played well enough to not include a package yet, but he is still a piece of the Cavs future
