This SNEAKY Free Agent Target Makes TOO MUCH Sense For The Sixers!

all right sixer Nation you know we are firing them off a lot of targets out there for the 76ers via trade and free agency this off season who should they get what should they do you know if you’ve been watching this show that I’ve been very vocal on the role player route I still think the Sixers are going for another big name but if they can get a couple guys in here who just fit the mold around Tyrese Maxi and Joel embiid I think they could be in good shape moving forward a lot pressure on Daryl M to get the right guys and the player we’re about to talk about I think checks a lot of the boxes right we talked about Caruso the other day but Gary Trent Jr is a player I could see making some strides here in Philadelphia and this one’s a little bit trickier than the Caruso situation so we’ll talk about that but overall if you don’t know who Gary Trent Jr is he is younger than a guy like Caruso he’s 25 years old former second round pick in Toronto and he was drafted in 2018 so he’s been in the league for about five six years now he’s played some pretty good ball with Portland and most recently with Toronto for the last three and a half years this guy is a player who could come right in plug in and fit he is a three and D player he does not need the ball in his hands he can knock down at a high clip and he can defend the one the two and probably the three as well at a very high level brings that level of perimeter defense that the Sixers have been looking for that they got last year from a guy like Kelly UB but definitely need a lot more of it so we’re going to go ahead and dive a little deeper into Gary Trent Jr and why I think he could be a great fit but first and foremost uh let’s go ahead and look at his stats from this past season so Gary Trent Jr uh this last year averaged 13.7 points per game 2.6 rebounds 1.7 assist and 1.1 Steals and he shot 39.3% from longrange 38.6% for his career 6.4 attempts this past season so pretty good efficiency out of Gary Trent Jr and keep in mind that was with a Toronto team that kind of just tanked out did not really do well they were starting to incorporate a lot of the younger players once they knew their season was done and Gary Trent Jr saw his minutes his rle start to dwindle a little bit and I think that’s fair for a team that you know doesn’t really know the certainty of his future but at the same time again it brings me back to a a question of why did they not trade him this season well there were other players that probably could have been moved Toronto did some interesting things at the deadline and so you know Toronto probably views him as a piece that they wanted to have long term but based on where they’re at now as an organization I don’t know if that is very feasible but speaking of Gary Trent Jr like I said you could come in to Philly and instantly play the two you could be a perfect fit you don’t need the Rock in your hands all the time he’s a pretty electric offensive player good at moving all off the ball as well just really a pure floor spacer and a guy who can knock down shots at a high clip and you know doesn’t have to really step on anybody’s toes so I really like Gary Trent Jr he played at Duke played in a really good system there and he was showing a lot of Promise early in his career especially in those Portland days and he’s really carried it over to Toronto but they just have not make made much noise and obviously you know he does have some familiarity with Nick nurse as well which is why I think uh there should be some advocating there from you know the Sixers coach to maybe say yo this is a guy who I think we could bring in and and who could play well whether their relationship is solid or not that’s a different story but I want to talk a little bit about the contract and why it’s interesting when it comes to Gary Trent Jr so as you see he is going to be an unrestricted free agent this summer but if you look at last year he actually had a player option and it was for 18.5 million now if we turn back the clocks a little bit go back everybody thought Gary Trent J was going to hit the free agent market last year I remember you know he was at the top of some of these lists in terms of guys who you could just bring in uh as pure Shooters and and Wing Defenders and he actually ended up accepting his player options so he took a gamble both on the Toronto Raptors and himself it kind of backfired because the Raptors stunk and his minutes started to narrow down a little bit so he may have lost himself a little bit of money in free agency but it is expected that he will probably get around this figure probably three four maybe 5 years in free agency and I think if the Sixers wanton a player that they can build with not only for the next year or two you know who can fit this system well I do think it’s Gary Trent Jr but it gets tricky because it depends what Toronto wants to do as well you know apparently Gary Trent Jr really likes playing in Toronto so if he wants to leave you know is Toronto going to try to reel him back in with a pretty good payday so I pulled up this article here on uh Fan Nation from a writer and it says it’s unclear what kind of contract Gary Trent Jr is looking for this season Grayson Allen signed a 4year 70 million extension that could provide a good comparison for Gary Trent Dante dant chenzo signed a fouryear $ 46.9 million uh contract last off season it is possible that Trent’s number comes in around those two figures if though Toronto opts to decline Bruce Brown’s option and lets him head into free agency it would not be surprising if the organization allows Gary Trent to do the same the Raptors can clear up nearly 30 million in cap space if both Trent and brown leave in free agency this summer so you know the Raptors got a pretty good haul of pieces back in the anobi trade uh obviously you know got rid of cakam this year so they’re moving on to a new era of Raptors basketball and it it pretty much seems likely that Bruce Brown is either going to get traded or they’re going to let him walk but if they do let Bruce Brown walk like this says it would probably make a lot of sense to let Gary Trent go as well they probably should have traded them this last season they did not but if they can clear up all this cap space and try to bring in some Premier free agents around you know some of their new nucleus and they don’t want to pay that much for Gary Trent Jr it makes a lot of sense so Philly could definitely make a play to get Gary Trent Jr and again I think it makes a lot of sense both in the short and the long term he’s a guy that could come right in he’s a guy that could knock down shots around Maxi and embiid pretty smart player sometimes gets a little cold but he does have those stretches where he gets really hot as a microwave scorer could probably stagger him a little bit with both units the starters and the bench he had four games this past year where he scored 30 or more points 12 games where he scored 20 or more points and again that was on a really bad Raptor team so you know Gary Trent’s a guy who could come in here and really give this offense a punch in a variety of ways he could run a little bit of pick and roll create a little bit off the dribble but nothing crazy he’s coming in to be a pure floor spacer and a guy who can defend multiple positions and just insert himself at that guard position and I almost think that a player like that is the perfect fit in the back court next to Tyrese Maxi as I mentioned a couple days ago on the Caruso video you know you need a guy that’s going to come in and not have to be ball dominant the Sixers have had too many I needed in my hands type of guys over the past several years and it just never works out well you need guys who can just fit that mold and you know maximize the role not have to do too much or too little and just be able to come in and impact winning so I do think Gary Trent is a player that should be on the Sixers radar his price tag is probably going to be a little bit higher you know if you were to go for a guy like Caruso obviously you would trade for him and you would have them on about 9.9 million this season so there are pros and cons if you want to compare the two but we have to wait and see what happens with Gary Trent’s pending free agency I know he’s probably not going to make the same mistake he did last year and at least evaluate his offers right he’s probably going to get a good amount of interest in free agency but the Sixers as we know can pretty much compete with any single offer right now and if they want to bring a guy in who can build here in Philadelphia and just be one of the perfect role players that we’ve been talking about
