Joe Mazzulla: Kristaps Porzingis is Trying to Play in Game 5 | NBA Finals Practice

okay we’ll take questions for Coach please uh raise your hand first question over on the right side fourth row coach how are you how do um you have an opportunity to be part of a very special fraternity of coaches here in Boston that have won titles talking about Legends like red Arbok and Bill Russell and Tommy hin and Casey Jones um what would it mean for you personally I know it’s you always talk about you know it’s all about the players but you’re a young coach what would it mean for you personally coach to be a part of that that’ll never happen if you don’t run back on defense rebound execute and get to your spacing it’s the most important thing Tim here on your left standing you said the other day that Chris as was making progress he obviously went through that workout before the game over the last couple days has he continued to make progress there a hope he might be able to do a little bit more today um I haven’t talked to him yet we’re going to talk about that before we start at like two um and so I’m not sure kind of where he’s at but he’s trying he’s doing everything he can to try to put himself in position to be out there I know that for sure Simone here Simone sand gazetta sport you talk in the past about your different side of your upbringing can you talk about your Italian side and how that shape the person and the coach that you became yeah I mean you’re just made by all the experiences and the things that you have so uh regardless of um what I am what I made from uh first foremost my identity in Christ is the most important thing before any all that and then after that it’s about winning for the Boston Celtics and the process of winning getting back on defense playing hard transition rebounding spacing execution those things are the most important John on the left fifth row uh coach how much of what you guys do defensively especially in regards to help is strictly game plan based and how much is is it instincts and sort of trusting um your Defenders and them trusting maybe who has who’s behind them yeah I mean there there’s uh it’s a good question multiple layers to that uh obviously there’s game plan execution but uh that can change once the game begins uh you know one side of the ball is is heavily dictated by the other and so I think one of the things that we’ve um freed our minds to this year is just making reads and have an understanding having spatial awareness about the um who’s where uh what you know what’s the spacing what’s the attack and just being able to make plays on both ends of the floor there so there’s definitely you know obviously a game plan component you have to have a plan going into it but at the end of the day it’s uh you know it’s the uh individual pride and then it’s the instincts from the guys when they’re out there Gary in the middle watch from Boston Globe um what did you see from game four it was such just a bizarre performance the lack of the not getting 50-50 balls them dominating the boards just it just seemed like you guys were a couple of steps slow and it was seemed like it was mental also what did you take from that and how can you kind of use that as motivation or a way to make adjustments in game five yeah yeah I mean every game regardless of how it goes there’s always stuff that you can learn from and there’s always stuff that you just kind of like you don’t learn from so regardless I think the most important thing is uh our process um towards getting better has been the same whether we’ve won or lost whether we’ve won big or lost big uh you know we’ve always tried to find the 10 or 12 possessions we can get better at and find the things that we did pretty well and how can we do those more so uh just kept a consistent process uh towards uh our postgame retrieval and then how we grow at that heading into the next game back left uh G janon from ESPN Brazil uh I saw Dallas increase the speed of their game in in game four do you think control the rhythm of game is one of the keys of the game yeah I mean that’s that’s you know when they’re at their best the team that dictates the pace dictates kind of the momentum and and the opportunities uh and so yeah I think that’s definitely part of it is how can we dictate the pace of the game how can we dictate the momentum of the game and you can do that in different ways transition is obviously one of those but there’s other ways that you can do that as well Bobby on the left side towards the back Bobby Manning SE it’s media Joe I know you say coming into the series a lot of the adjustments here will be dictated by like the points for possession um points for play things like that was there any area in particular that their offense kind is going to kind of force you to adjust going forward based on what happened last game um I mean it just depends uh you know I think they played a well balanced offensive game um you know from everybody and uh you know the game is connected and so if you’re not doing one well uh going to something different may not always uh you know stop that so um just have to be open-minded every game takes on a life of its own uh you know so uh we have the things that we can control and then we have the things that we have to be ready to adjust to uh kind of depending upon how uh you know the game grows uh over the course of time front right Shane Hey Joe Shane with Forbes Derek always seems very like even killed for you guys just kind of curious what you think his stability his calmness has given you guys to this playoff run uh yeah I mean just ay defined by uh the ability to make plays on both ends so uh like you said uh mistakes don’t weigh him down uh it doesn’t matter if he misses a shot or makes a mistake on a defensive end just has the ability to make plays and he can do them on both ends of the floor uh so just you know that balance of impacting the game in different ways is uh crucial for us anyone with a final question last one here on the left side yeah hi Joe um Joe Happy Father’s Day um thank you Joe I I’m sorry if this was already asked but was uh just go back for a moment was offensive execution uh a problem in the previous game I know how you talk about it the gamees interconnected and at this point in the series is it a battle of wills as much as anything um yeah definitely I think you know some of our defensive struggles came from our offensive struggles uh no question and vice versa and so uh there’s definitely some things we need to do better on the offensive end um what was what was the second question you had um it’s a little bit of both I think obviously that is I would say onea uh is that the willpower the mindset the the you know approach that you bring into it and I think there are some tactical things that um you know you have to do depending upon how the game is going for sure yeah thank you coach thank you

BOSTON — Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was asked about joining a list of legendary coaches to win a championship with Boston, and responded with a showing of a locked in mentality. “That’ll never happen if we don’t run back on defense, rebound, execute, and get to your spacing”

  1. With the ease in which Dallas was getting to the rim without KP. I don't expect game 5 to be easy but I predicted the Celtics win in 5.

  2. He doesn't sound like somebody who is worried, more like just get back to what got us here guys and we got this. Take care of what we can control and make adjustments to what we can't control based on how game is going. No pressure when you know what you're doing.

  3. Porzingus is hurt every single year. He’s “trying to play” for the last 5+ years. He has the same dependability as Robert Williams 3, although much more skilled, he gets hurt at the same rate.

  4. Celtics are 45-6 at home this season including the playoffs. Kyrie doesn't do well at TDGarden, in part mental, in part the Boston fans raining boos on him. Gang green will wrap this up Monday night. 🏆🍀

  5. This coach almost convinces me to become a Celtics' fan. He never fails to represent God whenever he speaks. You just become my favorite coach in the NBA, Mr. Mazzulla.

  6. Love that first answer, no looking ahead like they were after game 3.. jobs not finished

  7. For the sake of our (Celtics fans) health, please finish this tomorrow. 🤣 Good luck, Celtics!! ☘️
