towns this year makes it back to the all-star game for the first time in a couple of years his fourth career All-Star appearance and managed to play 62 games of course he had the meniscus surgery in March and ended up only missing about a month a little bit more than a month uh missed 20 total regular season games over the course of the Season uh which for him was the second most games he’s played in the last uh five years going back to his second All-Star season in the 1819 year of course he was injured a little in the first Co shorten season injured a bit in the second Co shorten season so both those were naturally you know shorter schedules relatively healthy a couple of years ago last season he has the uh the calf injury that limits him to 29 regular season games but then this year 62 games and played really well I mean the per game averages were up over what they were in his injury shorten year last year but otherwise basically the lowest uh across the board per game averages that he’s had but overall this was his second best ever three-point percentage from outside the arc he’s had a bunch of years between 40 and 42% but this is still you know the second best three-point percentage he’s ever had um the two-point field goal percentage was was fine it was better than a couple of Seasons he had mixed in there kind of in line with where he’s been for his career rebounding continues to dip overall uh the per game again was up over last year but the actual rebound percentage well actually that was up a little bit too we’ll talk a little bit more about rebounding especially on the offensive end of the floor here in a minute uh defensively I think what we’re all going to remember from this season from carony towns was the way he defended in the playoffs and this is probably like if Chris Finch were to do uh an exit interview conversation only about Carlon towns if Chris Finch was essentially doing the show right now he would surely want to talk about cat’s buyin and what he did to help this team primarily what his role was defensively you could also say offensively because we’re talking about a guy who’s made two all NBA third teams was a three-time Allstar coming into this season has won a Three-Point Contest and you know very clearly he’s one of the best three-point Shooters of this generation and one of the best three-point shooting big men of all time it’s probably either him or Durk and that’s it uh which is a whole other conversation that we’ve talked about before and uh we’ll leave alone right now but cat sacrificed a lot for this team this year on both ends of the floor and I I think the defense is where I want to start because there aren’t like necessarily hard fast numbers attached to it but it’s also the most the most fresh you know piece of information or piece of um I guess cat activity that we have is the playoffs and defense is is what was most impressive the Wolves won their first six games of the playoffs the first four of those cats primary assignment was Kevin Durant and then suddenly he’s guarding Nicole leic and that was the wolves have great Wing Defenders and they have the best you know defensive player in the league and Rudy goar a four-time defensive player of the year war but yet cat was the one that had the toughest assignment in both of those series and that was that has says more about cat’s versatility than it does about you know issues that the other wolves Defenders have like Jade McDaniels there’s a reason he was second Team all defense and there’s a reason Rudy won another Defensive Player of the Year Ward but neither of those guys was the primary Defender for Kevin Durant or Nicole yic two of the top Callum five offensive players in the entire league cat guards Durant in round one against Phoenix and I thought had if I remember correctly like three really good ones maybe two really good performances but overall was solid and then all of a sudden he’s guarding to K yic and at the same time he’s producing offensively he had a slow start to the Phoenix series attempted less than 10 shots in each of the first two games now his minutes were lower because of foul trouble and the Wolves ended up blowing them out in both those games game three he only played 24 minutes he had 18 and 13 and then game four when they clinched the series against Phoenix he was 11 of 17 knocked down four3 was 28- 10 plus three assists it was awesome defensively you get it to the Denver series and he’s guarding yic and he drops 20 points in game one on just 13 shots and then 27 and 12 in game two as the Wolves blow out Denver Take A two- lead and he’s still guarding Nico yukich as the playoffs were on there were some challenges and against Dallas I don’t think he was very good defensively because Dallas was kind of the antithesis of those first two matchups the first two matchups the best player was somebody who cat could provide enough of fill in the blank to be the The Logical primary Defender there was no natural assignment for him against Dallas against Durant it was the size and knowing that Rudy could roam the backline you had Nik Alexander Walker Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels to try and shut down Bradley Beal and um uh Devin Booker against uh Denver it was we want Rudy to try and again defend the backline defend the rim Rudy can play you know inevitably he’s going to end up in picking roles but he can also play both he can he can be one of the few guys in this league that can play the the Joker Aaron Gordon lob and he could also shut Jamal Murray down at The Rim because you’ve got Jamal Murray small enough you can use nil on him you can use uh Jaden MC obviously Jaden Anthony Edwards any of these guys and never didn’t have anybody else there’s nobody else that provides consistent off the durbal offense outside of Jamal Mar ni yic to really worry about so the idea is Cat in this case has enough Mobility combined with size and strength to guard joic for whatever reason he’s always guarded yic well we covered that quite a bit on this show on the Minnesota basketball party um coming into the Denver Series where cat actually has basically the best one-on-one numbers against yic over the over the course of his career of anybody and yet Rudy really struggled to guard yic one-on-one I think some of it has to do with center of gravity and some of it has to do with leverage and for whatever reason cat’s really good at that and the physicality that he plays with it’s just a little bit different than what Rudy plays with and it’s a better match for guardian yic and then you still have Rudy to clean up messes and that’s the overall impact that Rudy goar has on a game is that he can even if it’s not the one-on-one assignment he changes the way everybody else plays whether it’s his own team knowing that they have the security blanket of Rudy goar or the opposing team with all the never Minds guys you know trying to start to 48 to the rim and then it’s like oh shoot Rudy’s back there so I’m going to pull this back out and not even bother or I’m going to alter my shots going to be altered in the air because of of uh Rudy’s contest and Cat not only the willingness but the ability to have the quickness to guard Kevin Durant and the size the size and the strength to guard Nicole leic and to do it with a smile on his face and do an admirable job the Dallas series was tricky because there’s no easy answer for who’s gonna guard Luka donic and Dallas doesn’t have any you know especially with maxi kba out for the first what two games of the series I think it was and diminished in in the rest of the series there was no obvious cover for carony towns and that I think that’s you know the coaching staff didn’t do the best job trying to figure out I think they made some adjustments too late in that series with how they wanted to defend Luca and uh Dallas’s pick and Rule but K in the first two series did everything he was asked of and the regular season numbers defensively for Kat aren’t all that different than the rest of his career but again I go back to where I started it was the fact that he was doing different stuff it he wasn’t playing Center anymore he was being asked to do multiple different things sometimes they were kind of trying to not hide him but kind of sort of um and other times he was been given really difficult assignments and he played a little bit of Center you know alongside Nas Reed but primarily was a power forward in fact usually Nas was the quote unquote Center in lineups with cat because cat’s combination of Mobility size and I don’t think I’d say this but like defense IQ he’s really really really developed that side of things talking on defense being in the right place at the right time stuff that five years ago four years ago three years ago it was complete head scratcher like how’s cat not figured out drop coverage yet how is he not figured out when he’s the low man how’s he not figured out xing out on the perimeter all these things and talking and telling others what to do on the floor cat’s better at them now he’s continued to improve and it’s something the national media is gonna miss the Talking Heads the podcast nationally are GNA Miss because they don’t watch him every game but if you watch the Wolves every game he’s improved in all of those areas he still does silly stuff and we’ll talk a little bit about that I want to talk about the offense next we’ll get into some of the bball index numbers and we’ll talk about some of the frustrations with cat uh but still again like the this the the summarization here is that cat had another really good year and was very deserving of being an All-Star uh and defensively the willingness to do different things and then the ability to execute on defense especially in the first two rounds of the playoffs was massive for Carl 30 tals let’s talk about cat’s offense we’ll do that here next today’s episode of lock die wolves is brought To Us by our friends at LinkedIn when you’re hiring for your small business you want to find quality professionals that the second best three-point percentage of his career this season and his best since the 201718 season six years ago his his first All-Star season so it’s his best three-point percentage since then for his career he’s 39.8% just a shade under 40 he was 41.6% this year from outside the ark the free throw rate for carony towns was down slightly in fact his lowest since 2017 seven years ago his second year in the league his lowest free throw rate since then and his three-point rate was down again this year and it was the second low we’ve seen since the 2019 season so on its face it seems like the shot selection wasn’t great this year for Carl towns I don’t know that that’s necessarily the case it’s not like he shot a ton more mid-range jumpers because he didn’t I mean he shot slightly more 10 to 16 Footers but it wasn’t any more than he done kind of middle of his you know just a few years ago same with 16 feet out to the three-point line those actually that was the lowest Mark he’s had there uh ever in his career the the long mid-range jumper so it wasn’t shot selection period it was the types of shots he was shooting in those areas on the floor um and and I attribute this to a couple things one just the the the reduction and postup opportunities low block opportunities and a couple a couple sub points here obviously overall low post low block post-ups are are down League wide the ti rolls don’t run very many of many of them at all they they run more for Rudy go be unfortunately than they do for carony towns um I’m going see if I can pull it up real quick I had the number here um I lost it though but I think that the the lack of opportunities there and I’m not I’m not suggesting that they go to cat in the post like mid90s style you know that much like any any more often than like I’m not saying it’s it should be a regular occurrence what I am saying is that they should do it a little bit more often um here we go Carlon towns post-up opportunities he did have a he did have two and a half 2.7 possessions per game in terms of post-up opportunities still the frequency is just over 13% of his touches points per possession 1.07 which is uh which is good I mean like Anthony Davis is 1.06 so slightly better than Anthony Davis uh it’s a shade below joic and embiid who are just over 1.1 but the frequency is less than all of those guys the wolves are going to towns less often in the post than the six Arda embiid or obviously nuggets Ary yic or you know fill in the blank Anthony Davis the Lakers they’re doing it less often than all these guys and that’s going to do a couple things one post of opportunity isn’t inherently super efficient and that’s why there’s less of them in the game now one of the many reasons but the other thing is it’s hurting his opportunities to get to the free throw line too his free throw frequency when he gets a post up he he gets one a free throw attempt nearly one out of every five times it’s over 177% of the post is how often he gets filed of the guys that just rattled off joic Anthony Davis babo uh Joel embiid it’s better than adab bio it’s better than joic it’s only it’s a few points below embiid and slightly below Anthony Davis the frequency with which he gets fouled but those Touches for cat and I know that there’s also danger and you’re probably right now going oh what about the offensive fouls yeah that’s that’s a concern sure but I think depending on the matchup the wolves need to find a way to scheme a few more and maybe not a few one or two more postup opportunities low block back to the basket left box post up he’s so good crab dribble to his right or to his left with his right hand little jump hook we saw that a few times in the playoffs against smaller guys they need to do it more often I think that that will he’ll get more free throw attempts he’ll get more easier buckets and bring the overall efficiency up the second thing is the lack of offensive rebounds this year for Carl towns uh his offensive rebound rate has been going in the wrong direction now for several years this was the lowest offensive rebound rate of his career just 5.5% and even still with this season his career offensive rebound rate is north of 9% so it was nearly four percentage points worse than his career offensive rebound rate and in his first four years in the league he was above 9% every year and above 10% three of the Four Seasons clearly a big reason for this is he’s playing further away from the basket he’s not playing Center anymore so he’s around the rim l often and the Wolves offense is a little bit more wide open he’s giving space for Anthony Edwards to attack right I mean like that all certainly that all plays into it however there are those that’s a cheap bucket per game and like I don’t love looking at this in terms of just like offensive rebounds per game but that’s one way that this is an easy one um two years ago his last mostly healthy season when he was all NBA thir third team he averaged 1.1 more offensive rebounds per game an extra offensive rebound per game I mean most of his offens of rebounds are putbacks or putback opportunities where he’s getting fouled or making a bucket so that’s call it an extra point per game on average say he only scores in half of those which is probably you know maybe it’s a a point and a quarter a game now all of a sudden his his points per game is nearly up to where it was then go back a few years his last Allstar season before that the 201819 season he averaged three and a half offensive rebounds per game this is two less offensive rebounds per game grab grab an extra two per game and that’s at least another two points per game and now we’re talking 24 points a game again you’re talking this is the sort of thing as silly as it is that now you’re talking third third Team all NBA and then now all of a sudden he’s getting a little bit more of that respect that he so often doesn’t get nationally it it’s silly but that’s how this works and also there’s the obvious impact of the extra couple of points per game extra bucket per game the extra offensive rebound to two offensive rebounds per game but that’s going to raise his overall level of efficiency I don’t think the shot selection was bad I think his mix of decision- making in terms of putting the ball on the deck and getting to the rim shooting open threes I thought the decision- making by and large this year was pretty solid from Carl Anthony towns rate base wise it was his lowest assist rate he’s had in five seasons and the turnover rate well lower than last year was still higher than what we’d seen in every other year of his career well the usage rate was really in line with it so yeah the turnover rate’s still a little too high compared to the lack of assists and I want to get into some of the bball index numbers related to his playmaking here in just a second but the point is I thought the shot mix was fine it’s he’s not shooting too many mid-range jumpers he’s not um you know forcing three-pointers he could stand to shoot a few more threes get a couple more postup opportunities which by the way more post-up opportunities means he’s closer to the rim for offensive rebounds even if they’re his own offensive rebounds um I think that lifts the team overall now some of this clear like the other thing you’re probably yelling right now other than the offensive rebound or the offensive foul thing the other thing you might be yelling at your at your computer screen or device car radio car radio I don’t know whatever you’re listening to the podcast on is in addition to the offensive foul concerns um the ties made a concerted effort to be better in transition defensively which means Carlon Town’s getting back not falling over like Nas Reed and cap both fall over a ton offensively get caught up trying to get foul calls complaining about lack of foul calls um whatever and getting back on defense the transition defense was really good this year I didn’t think overall cat had major issues with that and the Wolves clearly are not they don’t CRA crash the glass on the offensive side anyway um but by just by simply getting more shot attempts near the rim cat’s naturally going to get more offensive rebounds it’s just that’s you know and I don’t think necessarily the transition defense has to suffer the Wolves as a team this year were bottom 10 in offensive rebound rate they were top 10 in defensive rebound rate but they were 22nd according to basketball reference and offensive rebound rate so certainly Samaria to improve there I want to talk bball index numbers break down cat’s offense a little bit more and we’ll talk about some of the silliness that you know we continue to see from cat because uh it’s it’s a topic I’m not going to spend a lot of time on it because hey I mean we see it all the time we talk about it on the show and we need to but it all it’s all part of this season for carony town so we’ll talk about that we’ll talk about all that here next today’s episode of locky wolves is brought To Us by our title sponsors over at prize pick prize picks is America’s number Carl towns we talked about the offensive shot selection and bball index does an awesome job of breaking down uh what it is or I guess I should say a bit more in detail the impact that each of these players has in various areas so like high level Carlon towns was given an a by bball index and three-point shooting and we’ll break that down a bit further here in a second an A minus with finishing an a with playmaking an A minus in overall offensive impact and a b in defensive impact for three point shooting his 42.3% from outside the arc this season uh which what did I say he was I guess that’s weird basketball uh reference had him at a slightly different where do he shoot this year according to basketball it doesn’t matter uh they’ve got him at 41.6 and bball index has him at what did I just say also 41.6 anyway it doesn’t matter the the further the further breakdown here is the different types of three-point shots that he’s shooting and his Effectiveness there yeah they’ve got about 42.3% anyway bball index 92 percenti overall three-point shooter he is 93rd percentile in terms of above the breakr point percentage we know cat loves the straight on three from the top of the circle he was 42.8% above the break overall this year 93rd percentile that’s an a 43% from on catch and shoot threes that’s 88th percentile it’s an A minus pull up three-pointers so off the dribble cat was only 34.2% which is 68th percentile and Corner three-pointers he was just a shade over 39% which is only 61st percentile uh he also wasn’t open a whole lot on threes his openness rating was actually uh only 26 percentile he was uh rarely open on threo attempts put it all together the three-point shot making which is defined by bball index as a player’s proficiency shooting three-point shots given the degree of difficulty he was a 97th percentile A+ in three point shot making and overall perimeter shooting an a 94th percentile so there’s no question marks there off ball movement coming off his screens off Ball scoring opportunities per 75 possessions was 1.9 so nearly two per 75 possessions that’s 90th percentile his offscreen the percentage of so his offscreen share so percentage of half court uh putback scoring chances or non-p putback scoring chances derived from offscreen scoring opportunities also 90th percental an a Cuts per game 83rd percentile a minus one cut per game um and that’s something we saw the wolves do a little bit more of as the season went on which was using at least pre-injury was using cat off the ball a little bit really good as a rle man that’s an A+ 97th percentile like you go on down the list everything is positive offensive rebounding a B minus and offensive rebounds per 75 possessions offensive rebound chances per 75 possessions when he actually gets the ball his putbacks he’s in the B to a minus range on all the different categories so he’s good when he gets the ball in his hands in fact his success rate on a tempted offensive rebounds uh which takes out when he defers to teammates is just 58th percentile a C+ because he’s just not active enough on the offensive glass at this stage perimeter defense all fairly middle of the- pack numbers which is tricky because of the role he was playing and obviously we saw him be great in the playoffs greats may be strong very good in the playoffs interior defense up and down depending on the statistic again the defensive marks are solid certainly for Carlton towns they’re really good overall uh the post play once again really good total post frequency though just according to this just 4% of his non-m miscellaneous halfcourt possessions is he posting up or scoring on a putb which is a little bit different than what the number at nba.com was but either way just 68th percentile in terms of his post frequency his post file rate is 70th percentile so the percent chance of a post-up scoring opportunity draw leading to a free throw which is basically the same number that we had at nba.com is a b 70th percentile his postup impact is an a 94th percentile good in all of those areas now playmaking the last point I want to make here about his offense the playmaking has been good but just a little bit sloppy and I I touched on that a little bit earlier related to the assist rate being down the turnover rate being down slightly but over where above where it has been for his career and also the usage rate not going up significantly but the playmaking here on um on bball index there’s some actual playmaking numbers here if I can if I didn’t lose them there we go uh so passing versatility this is interesting passing versatility which I’m going to read the definition here it looks at data on assist from scoring PL types and assist locations to gauge who is passing from what types of looks to reward more well well-rounded passes passers so basically this shows the I mean exactly that the versatility of passing for Carl tals 88 percent outs at a minus passing creation quality assist by range on the court capturing the quality of shot opportunities created by the passes he’s making so open back door Cutters for dunks and and free throws layups uh crosscourt skip passes open Corner Shooters whatever 998th percentile an A+ playmaking Talent which factors in passing creation volume efficiency spread creation quality and scoring gravity is an a 90th percenti for Carl 3 towns however one of those ingredients that’s baked into playmaking Talent is passing efficiency passing efficiency is high value assists and bad pass turnover numbers along with ball control possession to gauge which players are more efficient with their possessions and time to create scoring opportunities for teammates you guessed it cat’s not good with passing efficiency a 24th percentile Mark a D minus but he’s good everywhere else when it comes to passing passing uh versatility passing creation quality overall playmaking Talent the thing that’s killing him is passing efficiency a negative mark so what does Carl towns need to do better next year I’m not today on this show we’re not talking about trade possibilities I think it’s unlikely he’s traded I’ve said that before I think I put it at I put it at less than a 25% chance it’s probably lower than that um but we’re going to hear about it it’s going to be out there on draft night it’s going to be out there in July once free agency opens we’re gonna cover it at some point because there’s going to be rumors but next year for Minnesota what they need to do is find a few more creative ways to get cat involved if it’s an extra post touch or to a game great if it’s calling for him to crash the glass against certain opponents give him some opportunities to get some easy buckets get him going great I think the Wolves would do themselves a big favor by doing just that by giving cat some of these additional opportunities how cat and an play off each other matters too and that’s probably also a topic for another day but I thought that continues to improve and also cat’s chemistry through to go bear the high low passing is still there too so next year what we’re looking for from cat is a few more offensive rebound opportunities a few more post-up opportunities a few more three-point attempts continued efficiency in all these areas and we’re talking about not just another fifth All-Star season or yeah not just his fifth All-Star nod but also potentially getting back to all-nba status perhaps changing what the wolves do moving forward because if cat’s not traded this offseason there’s a real chance he’s traded next offseason so he’s got to continue to show growth here and now he’s in the prime of his career right he’s gonna be 29 years old this year carony towns turns 29 in mid November um and I think I mean the Wolves can win a title with Carlon towns as their second best all-around player second best offensive player especially if he’s going to defend to the level he did at at for stretch of the regular season and the first and second round of the playoffs really really nice year for Carlon towns and don’t let some of the noise nationally from the playoffs Cloud any of that we haven’t even talked about we talked about this a little bit on the Minnesota basketball party last week him coming back from the miniscus tear and only missing five weeks and then playing at the level he did dropping a 28-10 will guarding Kevin Durant a 27-2 will guarding Nicole yic in the playoffs don’t let that cloud how we’re looking at carony towns this season don’t let his 6 for20 against Dallas in the playoffs Cloud how we look at the season for carony towns he was awesome this year and uh I really truly believe the Wolves could win a title with him as their second best player and he’s just now in the prime of his career all right that’s all we have for today here on the show we’ll do Anthony Edwards on Tuesday we’ll get into draft coverage on Wednesday a big week as we finally get into draft season I say finally Wills have only not been playing for two weeks we get into draft season here over the next 10 days nine days or so uh big thank
