What Comes First For the Miami Heat This Offseason? | Miami HEAT Podcast

the NBA Finals is almost at an end and that means the beginning of the NBA offseason a crucial one for the heat what does it all mean for Miami and how does it affect their free agents as well as contract negotiations with Jimmy Butler and badab bio we’ll break it all down today’s episode of lock on [Music] heat you are locked on heat your daily Miami Heat podcast part of the locked on podcast prize picks it’s the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports go to priz pics.com lockon NBA use the code all lowercase locked on NBA for a first deposit match up to $100 we’re going to go over a few situations as this offseason gets planned out for the heat the offseason’s officially going to begin the day after the NBA Finals ends which could be as soon as tonight uh because of a new Wrinkle in the CBA teams are allowed to negotiate with their upcoming free agents from the day after the finals ends until the start of free agency on June 30th that could give the heat more than a week to negotiate new deals with their own free agents before those free agents even reach the open open market so a decent Advantage there again new to the CBA this season we’re going to talk about whether or not they can keep Caleb Martin some interesting wrinkles when it comes to Jimmy Butler and Donovan Mitchell’s contracts and their looming extensions but before we do that let’s look at some of the unrestricted free agents that the heat are going to be dealing with and we should start with Haywood heith David we’ve previously it’s been reported by Bobby marks and others that high Smith could get a contract in the realm of $8 to $10 million a year and so when you’re talking about what the Heat have to do if the finals are over tonight Thursday night whenever they end up uh finishing and obviously people will know mostly when they start hearing this um do they come out right out the gate with a sizable offer in that 8 to 10 million dollar range and if they do is that something that high Smith might be be like hey that’s great I’m gonna go ahead and sign that we can kind of come to an agreement uh as we get closer to the free agency or maybe he just Waits I mean he can’t formally agree on anything until a week into July but there there’s an opportunity for the heat to give him a sizable offer now so that he maybe doesn’t explore as much of the open market as maybe he’ want if if he’s again getting that offer that he’s looking for we’ve seen this before and it plays a major role in the kind of appeal to players and that once the clock strikes midnight the first call goes to whomever it’s signifies something it means something it shows that they want me you know that’s the the way the player interprets it and so if you’re looking at having to juggle between Caleb Martin who’s probably gonna be priced out of any offer Miami could afford and Haywood heith who might be convinced to take a slightly lesser deal to stay at Miami and this is also position on my part but I think that’s just how it works out in terms of the projected salary numbers for each of them next year Caleb a little bit higher than Haywood if heywood’s much more in the range that Miami could afford I think the first call goes to Haywood heith and I think it makes a big deal to heisi to be a guy who was virtually undrafted to to you know being cast off looking for a chance to get his footing in the NBA and to now be on the cusp of entering his major his first major free agency period as a guy that a lot of teams might Target and want and be able to throw a large significant amount of money at for them for the heat to be able to approach him right away and say you know what you’re our Target you’re the guy we want to keep we’ve invested in you we believe in you we believe in your future I think that means a great deal and I think that they do throw whatever money they feel comfortable with and again there’s a lot kind of deciding that it’s not just we can afford $10 million they can’t afford anything they’re really at a point now as we discussed with Keith Smith when we were talking about the salary cap and what everything else is you know how it shakes up for Miami there’s not a lot of wiggle room there but there is you know you can go over the cap you can go and and get yourself into the luxury tax area which is not where Miami wants to be and I don’t know that they’ll necessarily go there for Haywood heith but if they’re gonna look to keep heith I think he’s their first Target kind of like what they did last year like if they had to decide between Max streu and Gabe Vincent they chose Vincent they prioritized him because he was a little bit more affordable at least in the kind of Greater perspective they kind of let Max deal with whatever he could and he W up getting much more money from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Gabe Vincent got from the Los Angeles Lakers so I think it’s kind of going to play out similarly and they low balled Gabe Vincent and he ended up signing with the Lakers so they lost both of them and well I don’t know lowball though I mean it was much he he reportedly got offered more from the Lakers than he got to the Heat and he said okay I’m GNA go Lakers so yeah your point maybe lald was too strong of a word but if Gabe Vincent felt like he got low ball then then you know he went to the Lakers for a reason you’re right I think if you’re the heat you have to have a price tag for Haywood High Smith in mine just like you approached the Gabe Vincent thing before but Gabe was able to find a more lucrative offer somewhere else and went ahead and took it I don’t know to get Haywood heith to just not take any meetings it would take a Blow Away offer like like an offer he can’t refuse 15 million a year something like that and for the record the heat can offer him what they can offer him the max if they wanted to obviously they won’t but I’m making a point they can offer him whatever they want and it does of course it would go over that second luxury tax apron it would cost them a lot of money but they do have the ability to do it I say that only because you’re obviously going to come someplace short of that do you want to go over that second tax apron understanding that if you use even if you let all if you let Caleb Martin walk and we’ll talk about this a little bit later in more detail but that essentially will unlock the tax player midlevel exception for you but then if you go ahead and use that tax player midlevel exception it hard caps you at around $189 million so you got to decide okay all these things are connected right this is a really difficult offseason for the heat front office to navigate because if you really want Haywood High Smith you have to know what other moves that you’re going to make if you know that you also want to use the tax payment level exception but if you’re already ruled out using the tax payment level exception because you don’t want to trigger that hard cap then you just have to decide how much is Heywood High Smith worth to us and is it worth going to that second tax apron depending on the other moves that we’re going to make so again all these things are connected I do think that they’re going to have some sort of price tag for Haywood High Smith in mind and they’ll probably negotiate with him the benefit of having this open window where they’re allowed to talk to Haywood and nobody else does is they’re able to explain all these things to Haywood saying hey look maybe yeah we can’t give you an offer like on paper in writing right now because we’re not really sure how all these other things are going to play out but we’re pretty comfortable that what we’re going to be able to offer you something in the realm of let’s call it $8 to10 million like we feel comfortable that we’ll be able to get who knows what they’re ultimately comfortable with but maybe they’re able to explain that to them and says but all these we don’t know if these other guys are going to opt in or opt out we don’t really understand we don’t know what exactly our financials are but if we can get you in this range do you think unless you get blown away by some other offer on the open market that that would be good enough where we can convince you to come back because we really love we’d love to have you back here you’re going to be a very important part of our future we we already figure that Caleb Martin’s probably out the door again this is all hypotheticals in a negotiation and that’s sort of the benefit here so just because the heat are going to be able to negotiate with hey what Smith right away two things number one he can’t sign that contract until the after the first week of July formally even though you can agree on things before then right with the moratorium that’s from July 1st to July 6 and all these things so many weird otherwise known as a tampering period the legal tampering period that Pat Riley asked for and I guess didn’t realize existed already uh in his end of season press conferences I wish we had a legal tampering period and we’re like you do have that um and then number two uh I already forgot what the number two was cuz I got sidetracked so that’s kale that’s Haywood heith it’s not going to be easy let’s talk about the other two unrestricted fre agents D Wright Patty Mills no guarantee either of them comes back they both were mid-season aquisitions for the heat I look at this as a little bit of an either or I I see you know both of them can walk I think if I had to bet like $ five one of them comes back and I would say there’s a very low chance that both of them come back and if I had to pick one I think think it would be D Wright despite the fact that his beginning of his heat ten year could be qualified as a little rocky because of some of the the the stuff that you know he didn’t get on the on the court and some of the playing time but I think by the end of the year they felt pretty comfortable with him I think he’s got more upside I think he just checks more boxes than Patty Mills does at this stage of his career and he’s all he’s got a bunch of fans in that front office and in that building because of obviously the family ties and things like that so Dylon Wright back at the minimum I could see it but I I think that’s another thing where they would say hey you know what we’d like to have you back we’ll see how the roster kind of shakes out is the minimum going to be something you’d like to come back to and return to Miami for in a reserve role maybe not even just a it might not be a regular rotation role every night but you’re you’re gonna be on the roster maybe it’s something like that I can’t imagine I’m sure he he’d be happy with that offer you know just again kind of provide some security maybe a two-year deal two kind of an option yeah player option for next year kind of similar to what they offered Thomas Bryant last season so that if he kind of plays himself into a a larger role next upcoming season and he can opt out maybe even cash in more down the road from Miami or from some other team but you know something that’s been Cur I’m curious at least that I feel is interesting is the number of kind of offseason events that Patty Mills has been involved with for the Miami Heat considering he had such a short unremarkable tenure year over the last few weeks of the season in the playoffs like he’s been involved in a lot of different things locally in Miami and with the heat specifically like I don’t know now I I would have guessed like 100% that Delon Wright was probably the priority for the heat but I wouldn’t be necessarily surprised if they didn’t bring back patty patty either you know like I it’s just really unusual but like he’s been involved in a couple of different things with the Miami organization it’s like maybe they see him as another veteran that they can add to the roster and just kind of keep them on there for Good Vibes I maybe I don’t know maybe maybe they target both of them you got to leave it open right it just depends on how the rest of the roster is they have what 10 guys under contract right now and I’m assuming we’ll get we’ll get to this here in a minute but certain guys opt in I have one guy sort of on the bubble so 10 or 11 guys under contract depends on what happens with the player options you you probably throw in the 15th pick and the second round pick you’re looking at now 12 or 13 guys already on the roster I don’t know that they’re going to be able to carry both Del right and Patty Mills and also backfill two Wing positions if Caleb and hey heith both leave if they bring back heith that I wasn’t including him in terms of the guys the 10 11 guys under contract so I I don’t know that there’s going to be room for both Mills and right when you’re trying to add depth at other positions so uh we’ll see but the it’s a good point maybe it’s something where Pat Mills is trying to create a foundation for something that he could do in the future in terms of Miami’s front office or or something like that who knows Pat Mills has always been a huge community service guy at all of his stops Atlanta San Antonio wherever he’s been so maybe it’s just something he enjoys doing and there’s not much to read into it but it is a good point that you bring up um all right let’s talk about some of Miami’s uh guys with player options who do we think is going to opt in who do we think is going to opt out we’ll talk about all that next year on lock conditions do apply we’ll be right back thanks for making lock on heat your first listen every day Miami Heat talk every day 5 days a week if you’re new to us on YouTube hit that subscribe button you can also follow us on your favorite podcast app we’re going to talk about some of the extension candidates that the heat are dealing with later on including Jimmy Butler and uh something that could complicate things for them a little bit we’ll get to that here and it’s like what’s new we’ll get to that here in a second uh so the Heat have four guys with player options Caleb Martin’s the headliner $7.1 million player option let’s just go ahead and report it now that he’s opting out it’s been widely believed that that’s happening um they will have the taxpayer mid-level exception available if he opts out and that’s around $5 million a little bit more than $5 million that would as I said before hard cap them at around $189 million so that would leave only around 7 or $8 million to fill out the roster but it’s possible that they could do it um but it would also mean that Caleb Martin and more likely than not Haywood High Smith would be walking so that’s sort of the the thing with Cale Martin he’s if he does opt out he’d have the taxpayer mid level exception available but then they could also resign him similar to heith to whatever money that they want up to the max so they could bring him back and that would uh that would take them above the second apron uh more likely than not everybody basically pins Caleb Martin at making almost twice as much as what he’s what he made last year again $7.1 million option for next year it feels like he’s probably in line for the taxpayer mid-level exception which is about $12.9 million per year so a chance to almost double his salary annually for a three or foure contract seems like the likely result for Caleb this summer which would ultimately obviously mean probably priced out of what Miami could do yeah I think that’s a no-brainer there I mean Caleb earned it maybe his value was a little higher last year but he didn’t really have that option that potential for it last season and now he can go ahead and cash in I I mean if for anybody holding out hope that Caleb says you know what I’m gonna opt in let me run it back there’s no chance not not not in the NBA not with so much money at stake here if you can get something that doubles it for a number of years to provide the kind of security that he’s never had at the NBA level absolutely he’ll take it and so there’s a very I mean it’s it’s virtually guaranteed that Caleb is no longer going to be in a heat uniform yeah the only way that they could somehow do this is you you salary dump somebody else in a very major salary cap uh salary dump move right a cost cutting move in order to create a whole lot of cap space to bring back Caleb Martin but that’s I mean what we’re talking about is either trading Tyler hero and getting nothing back except for draft picks maybe very small salaries or t Roser dunan Robinson and as good as Caleb Martin has been I don’t know that the heat want to go jump through those hoops and get rid of a real another core piece of their roster to try to retain Caleb Martin when that’s probably not a guarantee because he’s also going to have this option to go into the open market and fuel offers that might be even more than the taxpayer mid-level exception even more than 12.99 million a year so uh in terms of potential Landing spots I thought this was probably more interesting because you and I agree that he’s probably 99.9% chance Caleb Martin is not playing for the Heat next year because he’s going to get paid and again good for him um Detroit makes a lot of sense in terms of a team that might offer him a lot of money Utah I mean these are just small Market teams that don’t really have access to the star players because they don’t want to go to these markets but if they’re out there giving throwing a bunch of money at Caleb Martin that could work Detroit who’s in need of some heat culture and some winning ways that makes a lot of sense Utah they can use some Wing defense that makes a lot of sense Washington again in need of winning character traits and things like that uh could really use somebody like Caleb Martin I think Chicago would be a really interesting fit for him they have the taxpayer mid level exception that they could use Indiana probably in need of another Wing Defender even with Aaron n Smith there could make some sense Caleb Martin can get up and down the court he could fly with tyres halber and play a fast pace kind of like that fit for him again tax pay mid level exception and then Sacramento a team that I’ve been trying to trade Caleb Martin to for like a year now because I just think the connection makes so much sense um does make some sense there too and they have they have the money available is there some tough spots there but I mean there’s a lot of losing a couple teams that are projected to win Sacramento Indiana three losers and three winners yeah who’s the third winner Chicago or Utah two and a half yeah good point two and four there Chicago is winning is and Utah is winning is uh but they’ll be playing time and there’ll be money there all right Beyond Caleb Martin Kevin Love Has a player option for $4 million you and I expect that Kevin L will exercise that opt in uh and be with the Heat next year Josh Richardson $3.1 million player option tough end of the year for him with the injury but I also think it sort of cleared the way for him to just sort of opt in he didn’t do anything this year that’s says he should opt out and find more money elsewhere I don’t think that that money is going to be there so it makes more sense for him to opt in um before we get to Thomas Bryant do disagree with anything on the Kevin Love Josh rson fronts I wonder whether or not Kevin Love Maul’s retirement I don’t think so I don’t think he’s ready for it yet but just given the fact that he’s got a new baby or fairly newish baby and that you know he’s already older and it was last season was kind of difficult like you know I could understand completely when he resigned with with a team last offseason coming off the finals run and the Good Vibes and everything else and you think let’s run it back I want to be a part of this last year not so much he dealt with injury he had to take time off you know there was the whole drama with Kyle and everything else playing out there behind the scenes I would imagine it was probably a little bit more difficult than even what we saw on the surface and I don’t know if he’s willing to recommit for another year it’s it’s tough at his age and given everything he’s accomplished like I mean I don’t know if he’s a lock for the Hall of Fame although I I think he is yeah I think he is yeah yeah yeah for sure and given that like one more season as competitive as he is and as much as he kind of enjoys that camaraderie I don’t know if he’s necessarily going to commit to it so I would say it’s probably 730 in terms of he him resigning I think it’s much more or opting in rather I think it’s much more likely that Josh re-ups because again Miami good place for him seem to enjoy himself and I think there’s going to be some need to kind of you know get himself in good graces and with the rest of the league too and prove that he can still stick around Beyond next season stay healthy you know yeah stay healthy continue like he had been building towards something and unfortunately he got hurt right as as he was playing the best basketball of the season for him and you know it just it didn’t work out I was curious to see what kind of a factor he would have been like for Miami in the postseason whether he would have been in the rotation at all next year you’ll have that opportunity to prove himself so I think he does OP so I I’m much more bullish on Kevin love being on the roster next year than you are I mean you put it at 7030 I’m at like 955 he’s got 4 million reasons to play next year and diapers are expensive I don’t know how young that kid is but they’re not they’re not $4 million worth of expensive you know but also I I do think I mean all the things that you said in terms of you know the trials and tribulations of the Season he’s 35 years old will be 36 um my everything that I understand about Kevin Love last last year he very much enjoyed the entire season the entire experience he was one of the loudest guys in that locker room one of the one of the guys that always were Jo I think he really does enjoy being part of this team part of a team in the NBA I don’t think he he gave no indication at all all season even when asked that he’s mulling retirement or thinking about retiring anytime soon my guess is he signed this contract with that player option at $4 million thinking this might be my last contract and then and then I’ll go ahead and retire I think you you open up yourself to that two-year window for a reason so um my guess is that he’ll take that $4 million and very very happily and say you know what if I’m the backup center again next year great and if not I’ll be your I I’ll be a great locker room presence collecting $4 million for the rest of the year and that’s great too uh the last one is Thomas Bryant $2.8 million uh player option for next year I do wonder if he’ll look for an opportunity to play somewhere else he played in just 38 games he was essentially by the end of the year the third string Center there was times where he was out of the rotation altogether as the fourth string Center behind Orlando Robinson he did end up winning that job by the end of the year I wonder how much the heat are still invested in Orlando Robinson we’ll talk about that here in a second so I don’t want to explore the Lando of Robinson part of this very much right now but if Thomas Bryant thinks essentially hey I could go somewhere else for the same amount of money and get more of a chance to play I think he’s There’s an opportunity that he just pops out at the same time you could say well there’s $2.8 million here sent in front of me I don’t really want to be a free agent again I’ll just take the money try to carve out some playing time figure out what happens and then deal with this next summer when minimum contracts will still be there out there for me probably so um it could go either way that’s why I sort of have him on the bubble if I had to bet a dollar on what happens I’d probably say he opts out and looks for opportunities elsewhere but also no guarantee yeah same I I think he’s likely to opt out and I think U Miami would be fine with that too I think they’d be comfortable letting him walk and and have him explore whatever the opportunities like he was a late s in the offseason last off season and I think you know um it’s there’ll be opportunities for him elsewhere those kind of guy he’s still young enough like I mean it kind of shocked us kind of thinking about how young he actually is and at the same time like you know there’ll be opportunities around the league I think he still has something he can show like he’s not coming off a title run the way he did the previous season you know like wasn’t really playing much with Denver but there was still the potential right he’s a potential spacer these guys the seven-footers who can shoot kind of are just going to play in the league for a very long time because there’s always going to be a team doing their rest of development meme it didn’t work for us or it didn’t work for them but maybe it could work for us and it’s just going to happen over and over and over again you just see seven-footers always have jobs especially guys with good rebounding rate numbers like Thomas Bryant there’s teams out there all the time that finish in the bottom 10 rebound in said we just need a little bit more oomph on the boards let’s just go get this seven-footer with a good rebounding rate on a minimum contract and maybe that helps address the issue and these guys just stick in the league for a long time um all right community’s page we put a post there just comment with your questions what you think the heat should do in terms of approach trade up trade down trade out targets uh more about that we haven’t talked about have you seen the latest mock drafts like all all over the place like there’s like four different options with four major moach drafts up there and then they’ve got everybody from Zack Edy to Devin Carter to from Marquette yeah yes yeah it’s just all over the place they can choose who knows what’ll happen yeah you can also follow us on your favorite podcast app in terms of extension candidates we know the two big ones bam matab bio Jimmy Butler we’re also going to talk about Donovan Mitchell here in a second and then I got got one thing on Orlando Robinson that I want to get to but bam matab bio the day after the finals ends will be eligible to sign a three-year $165 million extension it could have been more had he made uh had he won defensive player of the year or made an all NBA team of course neither of those things happened great thing for bam that window stays open he doesn’t have to sign that extension this Summer that extension will be there next summer if he wants to take it and that gives him another season to try to win defensive player of the year or make all NBA team and kick this thing up to the super max in terms of the max you and I have talked about this uh on other podcasts we talked about this with Keith Smith it makes zero sense for bam to sign this extension right now the heat would love it for him to sign it right now and lock him in and a cheaper rate than what could potentially be out there next summer but bam it makes no sense for him to do it I’m sure he’ll say thanks but no thanks I’ll I’ll Remain the team captain and I’m going to you know what I’m going to try to win defensive player of the year next year I’m going to try to make all NBA next year and then I want more money next summer yes like I mean again you know you laid it out like I mean it would be great but that the age of the uh the hometown discount it’s not happening especially bam at this point in his career like he’s made plenty of money sure but he’s this is like his this will be his biggest contract I mean depending on where he stand yeah so I mean for him to take it and a chance to be a super max guy we know how bam that that stuff matters to him right he’s he want the recognition and he’s like and if he could go in into this year with that and I’m I would be pumped for it if I’m a Heat fan do not do not sign this extension I want bam motivated by more than just recognition I want him motivated by another $50 million or whatever it’s going to be to go ahead and and win defensive player of the year or make an all NBA team because that bats motivation it’s a lot of motivation it’s a lot of let’s talk about Jimmy Butler though so this was something that got lost in the sauce a little bit in terms of okay day after is when all this stuff sort of unlocks well not for everybody for certain players they not able to sign this ex their their or negotiate these extensions or sign these extensions until the moratorium ends on July 6th or July 7th and for Jimmy according to spot Trak he’s not going to be eligible to start these negotiations until July 7th so after the moratorium ends so unlike bam who could start talking with the team the day after the finals Jimmy can’t start talking to the heat about a a new contract until about a week into July so to be clear he’s still under contract so even when the Mortor moratorium ends he can’t legally negotiate with other teams he is not a free agent right right so he can only talk to the heat but like legally the heat can’t figure out maybe the biggest question that they have in terms of trying to clarify what the team looks like for next season until a week until free agency while they’re trying to do all these other things like go get other free agents make other trades and all these things they’re not at least legally going to have any idea where they stand with Jimmy Butler until until then kind of sucks because we know that you know players are going to make that like I wouldn’t view Miami as a free agent destination even for those guys that are gonna be veteran destination you know veteran minimum contracts those like any moves that they might potentially make probably will be made towards the end of the flurry like I know fans love that time period and it’s not like I’m trying to put you know D anybody’s parade here or anything like that but you know you’re going to see the flurry of names or whatever you’re going to hear the pz you’re going to be kind of plugged into the W alerts the Shams alerts Etc you’re not going to see Miami involved in much of that I just don’t it’s not realistic because again your your your biggest domino cannot fall until most of those other dominoes have already fallen Etc so and if you’re a free agent and you’re mulling a a veteran minimum contract you’re like well I want to go to a team I want to go to Miami because it’s Miami I can make a little bit more on my veteran minimum contract because of the state tax situation Etc but I also want to compete I don’t know that Miami is necessarily going to be a compeer a competitor because you know maybe they have to trade Jimmy Butler who knows how that’s going to play out I don’t want to be I don’t want to be that guy dragged into that practice as Jimmy Butler’s yelling at Pat Riley asking for a trade or anything like that the way he played out in Minnesota I don’t want to be that guy and so if that’s the case they might just say you know what I’ll sign somewhere else look how it played out last year with Kelly UB Jr like could he have come to Miami had they been able to finalize that trade to Dame absolutely I think he would have joined the Miami Heat and Har and said he was like you know what I’m tired of waiting for y’all I’m going to go up and and deal with Philadelphia K Christian Wood all these guys but that I think might be also a lesson that the heat learned is look if you’ve got your sight sets on a guy whether or not you’ve made the moves you want to make or not maybe there it behooves you to go get I’m not saying fill out the roster and make all your moves but maybe there’s one guy who you target he’s like you know what this guy’s versatile enough with Jimmy or without Jimmy we’re going to find you know a spot for this person in the roster maybe it’s somebody that’s like well this is going to be our backup center because the draft done by then right so whether or not they address that need or not in the draft TBD but maybe they like you know what let’s let’s go get that backup center thing solved we found a guy at the minimum that we feel pretty good about maybe it’s just one guy the in the opening day of of free agency I think it would behoove them to maybe look in that direction but in terms of other dominoes you’ve got Donovan Mitchell also like Jimmy Butler can’t negotiate with the Cavaliers until July 6 and so Mitchell and Jimmy B are in a very similar situation where he have this Jimmy Butler thing that they’re going to have to deal with they also have eyes on the Donovan Mitchell situation and all they’re reporting out of Cleveland is nope Donovan Mitchell is gonna be part of the future and they’re keeping Jared Allen because Donovan Mitchell likes Jared Allen and Donovan Mitchell is involved in the coaching search he’s got all he’s got as much power as anybody other than LeBron James in the entire NBA and all these things all right this is great let me see it like if you’re that like what we’re going to know relatively soon just not as soon as I think he fans wanted to know in terms of okay are we going to know between the end of the finals are we going to know within the next week like the last week of June no we’re it’s going to take a minute here uh for this donov Mitchell Jimmy Butler situation to play out hopefully not as long as the Damen Lillard situation took to play out but it’s not going to be something that hey July 6th start making deals start making trades fill out the roster and let’s go into next season it’s not going to be fast this is going to take a while to to be resolved are you surprised about the the vote of confirmation for Jared Allen like we from everything we heard from Cleveland Allen was kind of on his way out given his injury and everything else and the fact that some teammates may or may not have been a little disappointed that Allen didn’t try to play through injury and their match up against the Orlando Magic Etc so do you think you think it makes any difference I think that Donovan Mitchell when you watched him play had way more chemistry with Jared Allen as a pick and roll center than he did with Evan Mobley and they’re keeping Moy though so well of course they’re keeping Moy but they’re just going to keep both of them like well we have to keep Moy because he’s an anchor of the team and we’ve got to keep Jared Allen because we want to keep Donovan Mitchell happy and then maybe you turn around and trade him a year from now I don’t know just after Donovan Mitchell signs the extension and piss him off then but you don’t want to piss him off now uh no but it makes sense I think that and also if Evan moble started shooting more threes at the end of the year for Cleveland like there there’s still a possibility that that front Court partnership can work just because it hasn’t worked doesn’t mean it can’t um but I’m not I’m not that surprised by it if I’m being honest just because their production was so good and Jared Allen’s a better player right now than Evan Mobley is even if Evan Moy has a higher ceiling so and Mitchell wants to win now he doesn’t care about you know what Evan Mobley can be three four years from now necessarily um do you think well you already saw like I think Sam Amo indicating that the the dream of Don Donovan Mitchell to the Knicks is dead like I mean I’m like questioning the reporting here but we’re starting to hear more and more Buzz that it seems likely that Mitchell stays in Cleveland at this point in time what you think is the likelihood of him not agreeing to an extension and then forcing therefore a trade it’s a great question I I still think a lot of I think a lot of the news out of Cleveland is being leaked to maybe push teams away from going after put an offer together yeah right like they because they want to they they gave up so much for Donovan Mitchell they want to keep Donovan Mitchell so sure um and if it takes trading Darius gar all this stuff to keep him happy they’ll do it they don’t care Donan Mitchell’s a better player so um I I just I don’t know I we haven’t heard a whole lot from Donovan Mitchel side it feels like it feels like a lot of the reporting and this is just me guessing reading te leaves is leaks from the Cleveland side you know more and more optimistic that they could resign Don Mitchell Don Mitchell’s not doing that he’s not giving away his leverage leaking stuff like that why would he do that so um I don’t know like that that leak of donov Mitchell has more power in the league than maybe anybody besides LeBron James and maybe even LeBron James screams the Cavaliers leaking that to the media saying if Donna Mitchell if you’re not happy here you have more power than you’ll here than you’ll have anywhere else in the league right yeah and so that’s basically them saying that so um I I I still I’m I I I will hold my skepticism until Donovan MIT Mitchell actually puts pen to paper and signs that extension and I think the heat should operate the same way in terms of the Knicks I wouldn’t have traded for Donovan Mitchell even if he didn’t sign you’ve got Jaylen Brunson Jaylen Brunson and Donovan Mitchell don’t make sense there’s other stars that make sense Jaylen Brunson for the Knicks you found your star congrats you don’t need Donan Mitchell anymore the heat you need Donovan Mitchell I would keep that open um all right so beyond those things one last note that I want to get to here and this is a minor one Orlando Robinson his contract becomes guaranteed fully on July 15th it’s $2.1 million so it’s not a lot of money if Thomas Bryant opts out and then maybe the the chances increase in Orlando Robinson staying we you and I you were there in Vegas last year when they signed orl Robinson they were so high on Orlando Robinson this time last year uh it feels like they’ve cooled a little bit on Orlando Robinson since then again he lost his third string Center job to Thomas Bryant by the end of the year but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t think that Orlando Robinson can be a contributor going forward with more coaching and more you know time for development I guess we’ll find out by July 15th they basically have to make a decision on this although he have also seen contract guarantee dates pushed back so we could also see that for Orlando Robinson especially you know with Summer League kind of going on around this time hey can we push push this back a little bit closer to the beginning of the Season maybe even during training camp my guess is that’s what happens unless there’s a bunch of moves that happen where the heat need that roster spot sooner rather than later which would be a little bit surprising if that was all happening within the first couple of weeks of July so my best guess is that guaranteed date will probably be pushed back at least until training camp um going into next season but again that’s a guess does he participate in summer league probably I don’t know that’s a good question I if they offer it to him he should I don’t think he I don’t think he would like I I mean I think like he competing like he’s what is he gonna do is he gonna even get better than what he did last year like he’s already beat up on the summer league competition like it’s it’s good to get some run and everything else like that but I think you’d rather show more behind the scenes like what if he dominates there it’s not going to change anything because he dominated last season and he still wind up not having that carry over into the regular season fair I I guess I would just say because of the timing of it you want to be around the team it’s a lot harder to cut the guy who’s there than to cut the guy who’s not there it’s like as long as you’re around the team you’re around the coaches you’re around we we know that Andy ellsburg Adam Simon Pat riy they’ll go to Vegas for summer league all these guys if I think if you’re Orlando Robinson you just want to be around them to me is that smack dab of when games are taking place in Vegas like July 15th it feels like around right the summer Le yeah it’s like that it’s right after today you’re not on the team tomorrow so right enjoy your time in Vegas that’s why I think it just sort of makes more sense for everybody to just push it back and and figure it out later there’s no rush for that decision to be get hurt in Vegas too though yeah that’s always a risk um all right 1. How close to his ceiling is Herro? That's the real question with him. Does he have it in him to take another step forward? For me, it's in his ball handling and that's where his below-average wingspan plays a disadvantage. His shooting as well but he's overcome it for the most part in that aspect.

My gut says it's time to move on and take a step towards dialing back the cap. I've looked to Utah because Ainge has been rumored in the past to like Herro. The Spurs might be the more realistic target.

They have the cap space and picks to make it work. Open some space, add/upgrade a draft pick, and keep Haywood and/or Caleb.

I know people want to make a splash but sometimes the pool is closed.
