How do the Spurs build a good team around Wembanyama?

How do the Spurs build a good team around Wembanyama?

let’s get to some spurs uh action here so Michelle the the wembanyama of it all has has thrown everyone’s take about the Spurs off season into a tizzy uh for lack of a better term just because people are wondering are they going to compete now are they going to speed up the timeline are who are they going to put around him all that stuff when you just look back at this season um of the Spurs basketball and of weman Yama what did you what was your main takeaway or were your main takeaways from the Spurs season as a whole before we get into this offseason I think um from from the All-Star break on there was just a significant Vibe change and I think watching wom y a 20-year-old coming in this league with that kind of pub and hype and expectation I I was genuinely resigned to the idea that okay he’s gonna come in he’s gonna have some struggles he’s going to have some learning curve and that and all of that’s fine and I think he was just so ahead of schedule on everything and shocked so many people with not just sort of what people expected him to be good at but with the other things and it you could kind of see the progress as the season went on like the skills that he was picking up and the and the the way he would answer questions and the confidence I mean when we get to the end of a season and he’s basically telling Rudy goar enjoy your last Defensive Player of the Year War I was just like this is this is going to be one heck of a ride and so yeah I think ahead of schedule is how I would most describe it because when he came in there was no way he was going to exceed expectations with all that was said I mean w was going on saying he’s the greatest Prospect in the history of professional sports and it mean it was just all this hyperbole around this guy and yet he did yet after the All-Star break because he was working on his post game because he was a sponge and wanted to learn and he just happens to be an amazing human being outside of being a basketball player he’s he’s got a old soul work ethic somehow he exceeded those expectations which I thought would have been impossible going into the season I think the way that he exceeded expectations more than anything was how he engendered himself to fans like he he in integrated himself into the Spurs culture into San Antonio better than almost anybody that I’ve ever seen went after they’re drafted except for maybe LeBron because he was drafted to his hometown team but yeah that doesn’t count that that doesn’t count exactly it’s not like it’s not like France drafted wemy all right yeah so when you look at this offseason Michelle obviously they’re connected the Spurs are connected to almost every free agent that’s out there Trey young Lori marinin uh Darius Garland people that are rumored to be wanting to be traded people that are like basically anything that is possibly being moved this offseason is being linked to the Spurs do you think that’s solely based on how good Victor was this year or based on actual rumors or things that people are hearing I think it’s probably a little bit of both I mean the Trey young ones that’s got to be that that’s almost all season I feel like that has been a rumor that’s just lingered like a cloud but the Lori marketing of it all you know the idea of bringing in a score it’s exciting um what’s crazy to me or or what I think the hard part of the job that Brian Wright and Company’s got to do is you don’t want to go too fast and you don’t want to bring in too much of a season veteran that that you don’t get to grow the team together uh but at the same time What Might Have Been a more slow down slower paced building process I I have to believe that they’re gonna speed that up a little bit because of how ready wemi looks and you don’t want I mean I’m not saying you’re G to waste the years the kid’s 20 we the all things going well he’s got a good 10 12 13 years if he wants to keep playing uh and hopefully they’re all in Spurs but yeah I just I think it’s funny to go from San Antonio where for years now it’s sort of been a bit of a drought and maybe not a a destination and all of a sudden players around the league have to take a real long look at playing in San Antonio because if you attach yourself to wiama early on and you can ride that that Journey like who knows sky’s the limit so I’m excited to see which veterans out there all of a sudden have opened their minds to possibly you know move into South Texas yeah and and it doesn’t seem to be a great summer for that veteran group I mean you hear Darius Garland and names like that but I think they’ve got a and I think you’re right on in that in that it’s it’s somewhere in between it’s not you know going where you know the ESPN Talking Heads This Summer are talking about Victor whama wants to win now and so they have to speed this up and they have to make these moves this offseason I don’t think they’re going to do that they have all those picks from Atlanta unprotected first rounders coming from Atlanta next year and in 27 you do not want to um sacrifice those picks because you might get a really really good player there and so I don’t think they trade those picks but I do think they’re looking to see who’s going to be available next summer you know Jason Tatum’s gonna gonna uh become a free agent there’s going to be bigger names than Darius Garland and so while I do think they might make a move with their 4 and eth pick this year they might pick up a A tyus Jones or they might pick up a a good veteran scorer here or there or a big guy I don’t think they they lever everything and put together that five number ones Kellin Johnson and Devon Vel for Kevin Durant or whatever it is they’re not gonna do that definitely not Kevin but maybe someone else um but if you where I stand with it is like you have all these assets you can’t use all of these picks that you have so you need to make some moves at some point Boston had the same thing a little while ago when they traded Paul pieron Kevin Garnett and everybody and they got this Treasure Trove of picks and Danny a just sat on him and he sat on him and now they’re finally coming home to roost and Danny Ang is now doing the same thing in Utah where he has all these picks and he doesn’t do anything with them and he’s trying to acquire more picks he’s a Lori Markin and it’s like at some point you H you can’t have more than 15 players on your roster so you have to use some of these picks to acquire other veterans that’ll help your team maybe you don’t acquire Jason Tatum this offseason or one of the superstars and use all your picks but maybe you do acquire a beist guy a Darius Garland you know a Lor Mark A a beist guy that’ll help you grow now which I think is what both of you guys and it also depends it also depends on how how well you like four and eight you know like true who who who’s there like do they get the two guys they really want or do those two guys go at number two and number three and they really don’t love 4 and eight and but if if you love 4 and eight and you think you have good players then the Malachi Brams of the world that the Blake Wesley of the world kind of fall off you don’t renew those guys when it comes time to extend them and you just you know go with the with the young guy because you may have a guy at four and eight this year that ends up being better than Devon Vel that ends up might being your second best player take I like it that’s this draft is weird I mean there’s just so many unknowns and hopes and dreams but you know in my my years I’ve learned to sort of trust them you know in the in the talent scouting pool and so I continue to just ride that trust wve and maybe there’s someone out there we have no idea about that will you know the next Tony Parker that will just be like who’s this next thing you know he’s in the Hall of Fame that that’s that’s best case scenario that’s what you hope for and it happens from time to time but they’ve missed as well I mean they they got Vel one pick after halberton they could have had Hal Burton they got soan uh three picks uh before I and I mean uh they could have had Halle Burton one pick before Halbert uh they got um soan when they could have had the kid that’s at Oklahoma City Jaylen uh Williams right Williams so they missed on that too now you you’re not going to you’re not going to always hit on Tony Parker mon jino I don’t think those guys are misses but halton’s better than Vel and Jaylen Williams is better than soan so you have to hit you have to hit when you get these chances they missed on on Primo although nobody saw that coming um that’s fair and so he had a lot of other things going on that is fair I mean if he would have panned out I mean and he was on track to um they have their point guard of the future so he was a dingling you you could could really hit it big with four pun received um any anyway let’s get let’s I can’t help myself sorry still the greatest defense though of all time I just to this day I’m just like what now what happened okay fair enough uh all right let’s get let’s move off of that quickly let’s go to the NBA finals

  1. While Haliburton is a better player than Vassell and Jalen Williams has been better than sochan so far both of those can be explained. When Vassell was drafted the Spurs had Derrick White and Dejounte Murry. They didn't need a third PG, so going for a successful SG is not a miss. Sochan is also 2 years younger than Jalen Williams, who is a wonderful player, but isn't the defensive powerhouse that Sochan is. Again maybe Jalen ends up being a better player long term (though I think Sochan will get dramatically better than he is now), but that doesn't mean Sochan isn't the guy the Spurs needed. You dont miss on a player because Keldon was picked before Desmond Bane, you miss on a player when you get no value from a pick. Like Luka Samtic, who was a miss, but the rest aren't misses, they just aren't getting Manu at 57 level great choices

  2. fire brian wright now.. i seriously think the spurs brought him in to make them suck so bad theyd get wemby. mission accomplished, time to cut him loose!!
