then Friday we will uh I will have a another show for you blaz just have a a draft workout scheduled for Thursday plus we’ll talk some Olympic Olympic basketball and some news surrounding shad and sharp at all including your boy DeAndre Aton from the Bahamas but that’s Friday’s show that’s two shows away in today’s show what are we talking about we’re talking about mock drafts ESPN’s got a new mock uh bleach reporters got a new mock instead of beating you over the head with who here’s who they say they’re going to take I’m still going to tell you those that information that’d be weird to withhold that type of stuff um but there’s some good reporting in um in in both of these uh both of these stories listicles I I don’t know what they are they’re designed as a list mock drafts with some Intel uh from from NBA draft veterans Jonathan gavone and Jeremy woo of ESPN and and John werman of bleach report we’ll start with ESPN we’ll move on to bleach reports and at the end of the show we’re going to talk about Monty Williams who lost his job today um a labor Pioneer Monty Williams and I want I want to connect it back to some thoughts I have about the Blazers and chony phips and their coaching situation in general let’s start with the ESPN if you’re an everyday or if you’re a regular listener if you’re every day or you’re probably missing the program to say Mike where were you I know I’m sorry I feel bad about it but I’m I’m here now uh but if you’re every day or you know that I think ESPN’s is the best it’s maybe not the best like who are the best players right like the the prediction of who’s going to I think some mock drafts they aim to say listen I don’t have any intel but I truly believe this is the best player and I’m going to put him at at at six because I think he’s I think he’s the best player available at six ESPN is more like um it’s the prognostication version of a mock draft like they really are trying to get the picks correct here’s what we think a team will do based on our Intel that is that is absolutely their approach um they’ve been really good at predicting the Blazers picks uh in the uh in the Joe Cronin era at least their Lottery level picks um and and um Blazers have two Lottery level picks it’s important to pay attention I I don’t think it’s like this is exactly what they’re going to do because ESPN wrote it and I don’t think you should treat it like that but you should say this has some real PR this has some predictive power um we’ll get into it a moment the blaz the ESPN has a Blazers taking Donovan Kling in at seven jacobe Walter at 14 in the second round cam Christie and melv ainsa um but I but before we get into the picks themselves I think there’s some interesting reporting here in this one that I that I think is worth going getting into um including what is Atlanta going to do if you’re going to if you if you’re if you’re able to remember um earlier this week on on uh on Monday uh Landry Fields told reporters in his pre-draft of media availability in Atlanta that the Hawks were going to keep the pick right so we’re going to keep we’re going to keep number one our plan right now is to make the selection at one well the reporting has come out today that the Hawks are really exploring their op and even if they are going to pick at at one the door is open the Hawks have worked out according to ESPN Reed Shepard Donovan kingan Cody Williams Ron Holland matus Bellis while kingan maybe has some juice to go one um the the Hawks haven’t been able to get alexar in the building they’re reportedly going to work out um Zach Reay later this week and reash seems to be gaining momentum as the as the number one pick and SAR is sticking there at two to the wizards but the Hawks working out Reed Shepard the the guard from Kentucky working out Donovan kingan big man from Yukon uh Cody Williams the Ford from from Colorado and then the two G g- League ignite Wings Ron Holland neat pelis tells you that if nothing else Atlanta is keeping the door open for what might happen and I think this is important for the Blazers because if the Hawks are going to trade back I don’t think the Blazers have the ammo to make that happen and Jonathan gavone was on ESPN today saying that a team to watch potential trade up is uh San Antonio San Antonio o the Hawks um have owe San Antonio some unprotected picks into the future because of the Deonte Murray trade perhaps they could get one of those back uh trade back to four where where or eight I guess but but trade back to four where where San Antonio is San Antonio gets whoever they want at one you know gives up one of those one of those picks uh and moves forward and that could that could maybe get it done but there’s some skepticism whether San Antonio would even want to do that because like why just like let it to be bad and get great picks into the future but the Hawks have at least considered that they’ve been working out guys like like Shephard and Williams and Holland and balis who are not number one overall picks who are tradeback guys one of the things though when you have the number one pick it’s easy to get people in the room it’s easy to get people in the room it’s easy to get them in the building um you can say like hi we have the number one pick and we’d like to work out your client an agent says we would love to be there because that’s like how it works it’s just very different as you get further down the board it’s harder to make it happen um but if Atlanta is indeed trading the pick then it changes the calculation for Houston widely considered to be the pick that is most often shopped um according to uh according to ESPN Cody Williams will have worked out for every single team except for Houston and according to Bleacher Report matus spel worked out of for each of the top seven teams except for Houston it’s like they’re not even working out some forwards basically it seems like they’re going to take all of the the sort of every most teams seem to have Reed Shepard from from Kentucky going to Houston like they’re either going to take Reed Shepard as the first board as the first guard off the board or they’re going to trade the pick but if Atlanta’s trading the pick it does change the calculations for Houston a little bit instead of having all the juice as being like this is the best pick you can get it’s like maybe Atlanta’s there I think um I think this is curious right I think this is this is this is like sort of good Intel to know because the board if other teams Leap Frog the Blazers uh it means you know much maybe they’re Lea frogging up to take Donovan kingan because they want him at they want him at three if not if no one Leap Frogs up to three there’s a much stronger chance that he’s available at seven depending on um what probably Charlotte does uh and potentially Detroit I think they could do whatever the heck they want um with a new new Co new coach yet to be named and new front office they could do whatever the heck they want I think nothing nothing is set in stone there although would be they they have young centers um but if if you if Atlanta’s really going to trade back and and um someone’s going to trade up I think it does change the calculations for the Blazers a little bit real quick on ESPN’s uh MO as as here is like kinging we’ve talked about at a bunch a million times for for a month on the show big guy who I think is going to be a pretty good defender in the league I have some questions about his offensive ceiling and what he does there but I’m I’m comfortable with him being a pretty good NBA Defender um maybe even a really good one but I think he’ll be an I think he has enough he’s huge and he has enough defensive like juice and understanding that I think he’s going to be a good good on defense and I think his offensive ceiling will determine how actually good he is uh jacobe Walter is is a guard from um from Baylor if he was a little bit bigger I would be into him you know it’s a highly recruited high school kid um who maybe didn’t have the best college year but you know if he was he’s he’s six measured 64 and a quarter at the combine with a 610 wingspan if he was like just 66 67 and you feel like he could comfortably play more small forward maybe not like only but like more small forward as opposed to guys like under you know basically 6’4 Barefoot you know six 65 and some change with shoes on not all 65 is created the same you know I think like you kind of guys grow into their frame and they get stronger and smarter and like the the like actual specific inches of your height is maybe not the best definition of what position you could play but if Walter was a little bit bigger I would be more intrigued by him I I don’t I don’t think I love him at 14 but I I don’t know enough to be definitive but he’s not on my short list which I will release to you next week um in the second round ESPN has the Blazers taken two players that they worked out cam Christy who’s a who’s a 19-year-old guard uh from Minnesota the little brother of of Max Christie and Melvin Who’s playing um in the French league uh for S St Quinton um you know agin will be 20 on on draft Knight he’s um I don’t know i’ like a a young Wing playing professionally is I feel like um a worthy flyer for the Blazers because they like they’re just so you know they just need to hit on someone who can play forward at a high level in the pros um Christie obviously has um some upside but I think he’s mostly like a two cuz he’s just a little bit slight is he a can he play a little bit of like primary Creator point guard stuff that’ll kind of maybe determine what his ceiling is but um he’s got some you know he’s got some shooting ability and um um and he’s like a little bit bigger as like at least a a somewhat big guard although not quite a small for he’s like a quintessential to with some shooting versatility uh interesting you know second rounders you’re taking Flyers hoping you hit somebody let’s talk the bleach report uh mock drafts because I think there is some reporting there from Jonathan wman who’s a veteran of the game in the mock dra in the NBA draft World um like there’s some there’s some there’s some nice tidbits in there from Bleach report that kind of give us a more well-rounded picture of what’s what could be coming uh that’s what we’ll do in the second segment join me there won’t you first though I want to tell you that Today’s Show is brought to you by eBay motors and there’s three words that you need to eligible items only exclusion Supply eBay guaranteed fit only available to us [Music] customers all right let’s keep it rolling on the mock draft train uh this next one next mock draft I want to I want to cover a little bit comes from John wasman Jonathan wman of bleach report Jonathan wasman has been doing this for 15 years um someone who’s a veteran in the game um he has maybe not had the predictive power of um of ESPN in terms of who’s going to go where but someone who has Intel that I trust and I’ll share it with you cuz I trust it um some some interesting things with with uh with uh wasman that I mentioned uh one the Cody Williams worked out for for uh everyone in the top 10 except Houston and and wman says like if anyone’s going to jump up into that top five and surprise and maybe a team is a trade-up Target in the three range uh with Houston Cody Williams could be that guy um Williams been a guy who’s been linked to the Blazers I think he’s a very Blazers Z pick right he’s like a long Wing like he’s skinny but he’s like a big Wing um with tools to be someone who can get to the rim someone who can shoot someone who can defend like a toolsy a toolsy tall Wing tuy long Wing um who like is pretty raw like maybe hasn’t put it together yet um and it’s like is maybe a little ways away that’s like a quintessential Blazers Prospect they Joe Cronin is on the record and he just he loves he loves the upside swings and I think Williams is that um albeit like his floor is um is down there um I think that’s that is uh one to know the other ones it’s like what are the teams right in front of the Blazers going to do um and wasman has some reporting here too um uh reportedly Rob Dillingham who has been out with an ankle injury this according to ESPN is going to work out with San Antonio and Detroit this week San Antonio is at four they also have eights Detroit is at five they’ve got some other guards but like they again they can do whatever they want with a new with a new front office they can do whatever they want no one is nothing is sacred with with the Pistons um so like those are some names to to keep an eye on both ESPN and uh and the bleach report have the same top three Zack re reace going one Alex SAR going two Reed Shepard going three I don’t know if that’s just like if that’s okay hey this looks like we’re getting a little more solidified draft order from the people who are in the know or just kind of the the strangeness of group think that sort of formulates and coalesces this time of year but as he get further down the board Jonathan wasman reports that dton connect has gotten strong interest from the Charlotte Hornets strong interest from the Charlotte Hornets and I think that’s telling right because um I think Charlotte is a team that could go in a bunch of different directions right uh Lamela ball is a big enough point guard that they could take another guard obviously they could take other forwards because it’s like they they have Brandon Miller but it’s like who knows what’s going to become of of of Miles Bridges and like they’re just so light on depth right that they could take a forward they have Mark Williams a young intriguing big man but like he had trouble staying healthy this season and is he good enough that you wouldn’t if you really if they really like Donovan kingan um you know would would they not would they not just say like you know we sorry this is like this is kind of the nature of being a bad team in team building they also have you know new new ownership new Brain Trust like totally new decision makers what do they do much like Detroit with a totally new plan even it’s even more new in Charlotte they could go any direction this idea that like um these teams wouldn’t draft a center and that kingan would fall to seven with the Blazers it has some truth to it because you look at the rosters but I don’t think any of these teams are beholden to what’s next but if the whispers are true and from that that wasman is hearing and Reporting here that Dalton connect has strong you know that Charlotte has strong interest from connect I I think that’s telling right like I think because he fits um they could use some more shooting they could use he’s got some downhill skills and things like that and he would immediately come in and be helpful and make them a little more like competent because his skill set would fit uh what they need with with with spacing on there and it would give you know Brandon Miller more more chance to sort of operate in the mid-range which he likes to do um more spacing for lamelo ball around to pick and roll with potentially Mark Williams connect is the sort of like if you’re just looking at like a what Young Piece don’t they have yet like a two three I think he’s probably like height of a two guard but maybe speed to guard probably need to guard forwards in the future but he could he could he could he could surprise me when he get to the pros about what positions he could play but I role is more important than positions and his role is like someone who’s mostly an offb guy but when needed can bring some on ball juice and the Hornets could use that if connect is the guy there that opens up a lot of space for maybe the Blazers to be players at with seven with kinging I there’s been a lot of smoke and why I mention him a bunch a lot of smoke with clinging to the Blazers a lot of a lot of ESPN kind of saying the Blazers would be ecstatic the Blazers would be thrilled if if kingan was there uh ESPN has kingan as the number three prospect on their board their folks really like him their service really likes him I don’t um I don’t I I don’t think I have a strong opinion whether he is better than any of the forwards but I think I am more comfortable with like his floor than I am with say a CO a Cody Williams floor but floor doesn’t matter for the Blazers you’re drafting for upside and if you look at Wan’s um uh mock you kind of get the mix of upside and floor that I think I’m starting to lean towards as the way to do it Cody Williams at seven Tristan D Silva at 14 I like this idea I like this idea because Cody Williams is a swing right like if he hits he’s a really intriguing he’s like obviously he’s like super skinny so his frame fills out and he hits his his shooting is real he becomes like a more aggressive shooter more willing shooter the volume as the volume ticks up the efficiency stays there he’s a pretty good slasher to the rim he’s got great defensive versa at least in theory he’s a three and D wing with some on ball creation juice that’s exactly what they need if he doesn’t hit your you know it’s like what kind of role player is he is he is he Corey Brewer right like it’s like what what do he what does he become I think that’s that’s the that’s the real question with Williams but you get that upside swing of like is he special like is he is he is he much like his brother like a really special big physical Wing or is he or is he something different you get the upside swing then with Tristan Silva who’s who’s um you know a guy who tested the draft Waters last year and and is back again after a productive season he’s older right like he’s he’s he’s 23 um from Wake Forest but he’s got he could shoot he can he can like a versatile shooting kind of probably a four in the pros because of the of the foot speed but like a versatile shooting forward who can defend a little bit and has some physicality like he probably doesn’t you know DVA doesn’t profile as an upside guy look like oh he’s going to be a star at one point but when you’re drafting at 14 and you have a chance of someone who’s like okay this dude could be like a rotational player for a long time or at least you know for you I think like you should always draft with like a four plus year window okay he’s going to be useful for four years and then like will he earn a second contract he seems like a second contract guy because of what his like functional upside is is he going to be a high level player is he always going to be the ninth best player on a basketball team maybe right but if you’re aiming for if you’re hoping that Cody Williams develops into a role player and to Silva is looking closer to a role player um it is uh it’s I think it gets you I think it gets you I think it has some real Intrigue right I think it has some real Intrigue um I I also I think I said to Sila went to wake that’s not where he went to college um he went to Colorado which brings me to my next sort of goofiness of this um is there a world in which drafting college teammates is the right move I don’t know I don’t know it has a real Raymond Felton Shawn may part of it um I Shawn may Shawn may Raymond fell into the Bobcats a feel to it I I think um I don’t think it’s an issue but it’s a weird draft if you draft two forwards from the third best team in the Pack 12 um it would be it would be an interesting it would be an interesting outcome to draft both Colorado kids um I think I called him a wake guy because the jerseys are the same and in my brain in my brain uh black and black and gold uh ended up together okay in the second round of the wasman draft um Kevin mcculler from Kansas he’s been hurt and hasn’t been able to participate in the combine will work out for folks but like when he played a very productive player for Kansas I mentioned in the previous podcast the productivity is there um you know he’s like a he’s a dude who does a little bit of everything he’s a little bit older at 23 and obviously like the knee the the knee injury is a question mark but I like him as a u as a potential second round guy and then at 40 Watchman has him taking Dylan Jones I like Dylan Jones y’all he’s like 64240 ball in his hands big bowling ball type guard hyper productive in the Big Sky at Weber State um you know like 219 and four assists as as like a as like a big bruising two guard um I don’t know what he does in the pros but I I like weird I like weird big guards and he’s a weird big guard um he would he would be intriguing for me um okay mty Williams is a labor pioneer he’s going to get paid a lot of money to not work let’s talk about him and what does firing a coach actually do as it relates to the Trailblazers that’s what we’ll do in the third segment join me there won’t you first though I want to tell you that Today’s Show is brought to you by fanuel it’s summertime I’m wearing my Rockies cap it’s baseball season you can hit home runs all day long on FanDuel crush a doubles to the Gap even uh right now new customers get 200 bucks in bonus Bets with any $5 bet on FanDuel that’s 200 bucks you can use to bet on everything from nerfies to who’s going fanduel.com lockon you can add a big win to your summer bucket list that’s FanDuel America’s number one sports [Music] book still a pass first point guard I’m still Mike Richmond and you are still listening to lockon Blazers okay Monty Williams got canned today the Detroit Pistons after hiring TR and Langdon famously lost the 1999 head Championship shout out to the Yukon uh Traer langon takes over he eventually fires the coach they hit they you know they they fired the GM as with with a new front office they eventually fired the coach uh Detroit’s heading in a New Direction and typically when someone new in the front office takes over they head in a New Direction importantly not something that necessarily happened here in Portland but Monty Williams um you know the the notable thing about it is that he was just terrible last year with the Pistons like he um played Killian Hayes over Jaden ivy for an extended stretch of time he played a Million just like all bench lineups he was playing 11 man rotation searching for it they lost 28 games they had the worst season in Piston’s history they made no progress and he didn’t seem like deeply invested in the in the plan but he was still owed $65 million over the remainder of his contract that’s a lot of money to send packing but the Pistons with sign off from their owner says we’ll pay to get rid of him Monty Williams is gone Williams now has earned buyouts in back-to-back season in about a 14-month stretch for north of $80 million that’s a labor Pioneer y’all that’s everybody’s dream imagine getting $80 million to not go to work imagine getting paid for two jobs that they told you to leave imagine getting paid imagine getting paid about $20 million to win 14 games it’s a good gig it’s a good gig Monty Williams coaching contract reset the coaching Market everybody had like the coaches were making you know5 six7 million a year 10 million was the was the highend Williams all of a sudden gets an average annual value of like 16 now that’s what the going market for good coaches congratulations to him a labor Pioneer reset the coaching market and then lost a job that he didn’t want and gets paid to not do it but when coaches get fired the thing that happens is my friends text me and they say when’s Chanty getting canned and I say I don’t think that’s happening anytime soon chony bips has made it pretty clear that he would like to be a coach of a competitive basketball team he said as much of the Blazers exit interviews um at least he was if not actively courting allowing himself to be courted by certain Suns players for a job in Phoenix that was going to another coach um I don’t think he’s long for this job but the Blazers you know Joe cron has made it clear that chony Bops has um the support of the franchise at least for now and they don’t plan on changing things they also like got rid of bps’s head coach and got rid of and and one of his assistants which is his little brother um it’s a rocky world right in in in for the Blazers coaching staff and they’ve yet to hire any of the assistant coaches um I have some I have some other thoughts I’m not going to share here but like um yeah like it’s been a weird it’s been a weird it’s been a rocky run run for for for this stretch and bips has done a bunch of losing um during his three years I think equivocally he’s not a very good coach um I think he’s kind of fine on defense they’ve been creative I think they do some different stuff I think he handled the scoot situ scoot Henderson situation okay in terms of like doing out playing time but I don’t think he’s put his team in a position to overachieve I don’t I don’t think he’s ever gotten more than the sum of his Parts out of um out of his rosters he’s had some bad and injured rosters and what he’s he’s ended up with is some bad records um I I think the first year prly bips had like a totally competent roster and and an injured Damen lard and they just were awful um but it was this first year coaching and it felt like he got a pass the last two years he’s just like I think he’s just not a creative enough offensive coach to maximize what they have and you know I I again I think he’s an okay defensive coach and I think he’s just I think he’s just not very good at this that’s fine there’s plent it’s it’s it’s not that big of a it’s not that big of a deal to have someone who is um not a particularly good coach leading a bad team and that brings me back to to Moni Williams there is no one no one red hour back whoever you want to bring in Eric spolo or anyone back from the dead um John frecking Wooden could come back and Coach the Blazers Jack Ramsey could come back and Coach the Blazers you’re not going to make this team a magic playoff team Talent wins and the Blazers are light on talent but better coaches could improve the situation and I think here’s the difference that I see with the Monty Williams situation in Detroit and the and the Blazers situation here Williams was like an act actively detrimental to a young team searching for what was next he was hired last year to coach a rebuilding team and he was clearly maybe not invested in it and then like had wacky a wacky approach to doing it did some things that were detrimental um terrible lineups terrible utilization not playing your young core enough together starting a guy for a bunch of the year that they ended up waving like outright and killing Hayes like just a just a all all all weird business I do not think that chony bips is like poisonous to the Blazers I don’t think that at all I don’t think he’s I don’t think he’s like a I think he’s just not a very good coach and he you’re going to like if they were to bring anyone in they would be a maybe a little bit better but they wouldn’t be like de it wouldn’t demonstrably change their Direction but here’s here’s the thing and I think this is this is actually the kicker the best thing you can do with a young team is play with purpose and coaching like well I don’t think Philips is going to Poison the Well or anything I think that it would be more valuable to get someone to coach with the purpose of what is next maybe that’s bips right maybe he coaches his ass off this fall and like earns a new contract and all those things I don’t think he’s going to do that I think he’s going to coach out a lame duck year and end up you know on the looking for a new job next summer and quickly get hired as somebody’s lead assistant and go on from there or whatever an assistant coach and go on from there if that’s what he wants to do I think bips would get hired in the league relatively quickly if he wanted to coach again but the reason that you fire someone isn’t because change is positive in and of its like in and of itself right the Pistons are going to be bad next year too right they’re going to win they’re they’re going to go from 14 wins to 23 right they’re going to win nine more games 23 victories baby only 59 losses like it’s it’s it’s not going to change that much and even if they win 20 games like it’s it’s like the point of changing coaches is to play with purpose and Direction about what moves forward and I think what the Pistons did is they’re going to have a chance to choose um a Direction and chose a coach that is married to that direction and move forward the question with the Blazers is is their coach married to the direction I don’t think the Blazers are in a worse spot with Billups necessarily like in a grand sense they’re probably in a little worse spot because I don’t think he’s very good at coaching but like I don’t think they’re in this like holy holy worse spot than they could be but teams that move with purpose on and Swift purpose okay this isn’t working here’s the here we’ve identified a thing that isn’t working for us what can we do to maximize our Direction in the future maybe not wins in 2024 2025 but a purpose and a system and a and a sense of where you want to go and how you want to get there Monty Williams clearly wasn’t that right he was someone who was maybe disengaged with the whole thing and only took the job because they kept coming back to him and offering him more money and he said $80 million I I’m going to do that for $80 million I don’t think bips has checked out on the team I just think he is someone who signed up to coach a competitive roster was unable to coach a competitive roster and is now coaching a rebuild that he would have never signed up for in the first place I think the Blazers would benefit in the long run from hiring a coach that was the type of person who specifically would want and is capable of coaching the the heck out of a young not very good team and growing them together but I don’t think I don’t think the Pistons are going to see immediate dividends and immediate returns and I don’t think the Blazers are going to see immediate dividends or returns if they were to change coaches and I don’t think that they’re going to set themselves back several years by letting johy bips coach another 82 games some teams absolutely need to change coaches Detroit was one of those teams the Blazers are in another category they’re a team that should probably change coaches at some point in the near future and I bet they will okay that’s going to do it for today’s show come back for tomorrow show Tyler Rucker of No Ceilings going join the program um this Show’s going to come out you know 9 :0 p.m. roughly on Wednesday evening and that show look for it in your feeds around noon Pacific time on
