Detroit Pistons interested in Nic Claxton? Will the Brooklyn Nets resign their center?
coming up as we prepare for NBA off season in the pursuit of free agents are the Detroit Pistons ready to make a big push for Nicholas Claxton we dive in on the rumors what it would mean for their roster and how it could open things up for Brooklyn all coming up [Music] next you are locked on Nets your daily Brooklyn Nets podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day ah yes Nicholas Claxton and what that price point would look like was going to be interesting for Brooklyn it’s even more interesting if it ends up being the Detroit Pistons who’ve been talked about but are a franchise very much in a state of flux after letting go of Monty Williams yeah we’ve sort of wondered like sort of the the no news is whatever news on the Nick claxon front here for a few days in the free agency that we talked about this a bit yesterday is that you know it’s not this is only a class thing it’s been relatively radio silent on the free agent front outside of that OG anobi is going to test free agency there’s been no news definitively I would say one way or the other though we have heard Rumblings that the that they’re we and we’ve heard this for a while by the way too like this isn’t necessarily new that there would be teams out there that could pursue Nick Laxton Detroit was one of them um and that they have you know they have cap space they might have a timeline that fits him it’s a little confusing with some of the rest of the roster makeup but new GM coach out new mindset guys that this regime did not draft right like these are things that are important and there’s a you know there could be a growing piece that like maybe some of the radio silences there could the idea that there might be bigger offers now remember there’s an exclusivity window here with the Nets and Claxton that is not open to other teams yes but we all know that the NBA operates not necessarily within the bounds of what is written in pen on the rule book right in terms of like knowing what might be out there for you if you were to test other things in the market well it’s always so funny too because I mean you you talk you hear about this going back to not Nicholas Clon any player especially major players at the highest level you hear going back to trade deadlines of the Year prior well while they may not make a push for you know LeBron James at this deadline when it gets to the off season you can expect these three teams to be in the mix so it’s it’s very much signaled a year a year half year in advance when teams are going to be into it when it comes to Detroit I what I do find interesting now is I mean not not that this is a Pistons podcast but my goodness Monty Williams just go ahead and earn yourself roughly 13 million over the next five or six years to just go ahead and relax they are an organization that when you make a switch like this away from a head coach new decision maker at the top it does make you look at their roster and and I I think at least to me say well we don’t know what pieces are going to be here or not be here we don’t know how want to construct this team because even though they have a lot of young Talent they’ve also been bad so it’s not just well we drafted all these young players it makes we think of OKC and we slowly built toward this thing and now we feel like we’re ready to make a Big Splash in our conference Detroit keeps getting young talent and keeps being bad and I don’t mean that as you know not trying to dig on Pistons here but they are a bad roster in spite of having young Talent so I think it opens them up to maybe looking at the landscape and saying how do we make some big changes here to move this team in the Direction around a core that we like right so the this is the important thing to remember where Clon is concerned it’s like while fit might be confusing now right like you look it’s like they got Jaylen durren right um and they have him on a rookie contract that’s really pretty uh advantageous for a couple years after that I mean obviously Kade and oer that they drafted last year they have Jaden Ivy it’s what what we can’t do is say that they’re married to any of these guys because again it’s all new Troy Weaver gone right Monty Williams gone now it’s TR L now it’s going to be a new coach like we just don’t like the direction that used it used to be is kind of like inconsequential now you might look at it and say well it just makes sense to you know try it for a year and to see what you have but we just don’t know what decisions have already been made and in terms of talent like after the guys I just mentioned there’s kind of nothing right and so like this is kind of ground I mean Simone fono he’s a pre agent this year too right so like like again like after that’s really really really really what’s that Evan forier I mean come on what was the yeah right so and so judging our ideas around the Pistons from the past is really just a a moot point like it it doesn’t it’s none of it’s the same every all the all the decision makers all the key personnel they’re all different so it’ be I mean short of probably just knowing that Kate is is a guy right like I think we know that I just don’t think we can make any assumptions that we understand where the rest of this thing lies and if you also understand that Detroit is probably for the foreseeable future going to struggle to sign any real key free agents I’m talking like upper tier top 25 top 30 guys right hard for any team to do that’s just not going to happen anytime soon and at some point you kind of just got to spend the money and so it does make sense if like these guys already liked Claxton and saw him as just maybe a better dur a better Cade fit or something like that you could can tell yourself a story pretty quickly about why this might be the spot to get paid and by the way you could probably do a Nick Claxton story about why this might be a better place to go and that and this the other thing with this is the other thing with him if it’s gonna be more money and like a better pick and roll partner and a younger Squad and a better Vision I don’t know I know as Nets fans we always want to talk ourselves into The Grass Is Always Greener on this side but I mean how hard would it be to tell yourself a story that claxon just says that looks pretty good outside of like it’s Detroit’s maybe worse than New York as a city right yeah maybe you don’t like the destination so much but you know what else you don’t have to squint too hard and see well now how many how many more million is that that I’d be earning there than I could be earning in Brooklyn and that’s a big part of this as well the the willingness of Detroit with their cap space to maybe overpay on the market and it could come down to other names that they’re pursuing whether or not they can spend money elsewhere but coming up here in a second you mentioned a little bit of the fit maybe for Claxton and Detroit some of the other bigs that are on that roster that I think you can easily push out of this picture when you’re having the conversation and then the number how high is to high as we’ve often asked over the course of this summer how high is to high for Brooklyn and would the Detroit Pistons offer the Brooklyn Nets an out if they wanted to avoid committing big dollars to Nicholas claxon we’ll get into all that coming up here in just one moment all right before we get into that tell you my friends over at game time look if you’re into buying tickets whether it’s for the game guaranteed all right so as we continue today’s lock on Nets episode easily the biggest offseason component for the Brooklyn Nets is what happens with Nicholas claxon the funny thing is we talked about before it doesn’t necessarily mean a lot to this offseason per se it will mean a lot to next offseason yes the Brooklyn Nets are going to have have a lot of money to work with in free agency next offseason they’ll have even more if they don’t end up resigning Nicholas Claxton and they get the Ben simons’s contract off the books we’ve also talked about like price point here so before we look at just Detroit because there is something about the fit there that I think is noteworthy when you look at their roster and you see some other names that are in there from a depth perspective but is 25 million a year is a hundred million contract the number where if you’re the Brooklyn Nets you go okay you know we you you’ve mentioned this I think before early in the off season we brought CLA and it was oh listen we wanted him back right I I mentioned this around the uh the Fernandez introduction right and what what’s his plans for the team and Shawn Marsh and his comments and saying of course we envision Claxton Defensive Player of the Year all these things and I think you rightly reminded me and maybe Nets fans that yeah well it’s easy to say that then because then later you just say yeah we wanted to but it didn’t work out somebody else came in and wanted to pay him more money and in this instance it could be Detroit that’s willing to go an extra mile on the contract that Brooklyn just can’t justify yeah it’s always just going to be hard to know about like sort of internal dialogue about these things what you see I we know the Cap’s going up 25 seems like a huge number for a guy like this but I mean if it’s going to be like 21 22% of the cap something like that um I mean maybe it’s not the end of the world it is it is a big number I don’t know I mean we don’t know what like the Nets internal dialogue is on it though I do suspect there is a there has to be a Breaking Point they have to it does seem like if we’re hearing some of these Rumblings to be correct is like the Nets are maybe not so solid in their original position of like 20 2025 or bus never going to blow it up like I think there’s should been just enough tea leaves kind of floated out there that make it seem like they might not have full conviction as that on that as a plan I think they still have it like I think they probably see like someone like Giannis or someone like that as a possibility and you might only get one chance at guys like that you kind of need to be set up to do it right and so like there is a part of that but that being said like I said we said yesterday like even if you envision that as the guy like Claxton is not a guy you can have really on the roster at that point right because and so there’s like this weirdness around it so back you know to very quickly round back to your original point is I think there probably is a point at which it just doesn’t make sense and I don’t know if you’re saying this maybe you are it’s like if the number is so big and that does give the Nets an out to say hey we tried of course we’re going to say all these things we wanted them back but at some point it’s like Detroit just they have the ability to overspend on a guy like this and we don’t yeah and I and and you know it is relative and I think the cap going up does matter and I’ve talked about frontloading the contract for Claxton so when you look back at it and you say you know let’s just assume the Nets want to pay him 80 million Over a four-year contract and Detroit’s willing to go to a 100 okay and the Nets say okay well we’ll make it 90 and we’ll put that extra 10 million at the front of the contract so the last two years still look really attractive if we needed to trade you we could and I don’t even you know I’ve operated underneath that premise sometimes which by the way we always reiterate this I like Nick Claxton as a player I just think that as we’ve said before it’s an unfortunate set of circumstances where you’re not on the best team with the best players around you to elevate what your value is and what your skill set is that being said if you told me that the Brooklyn Nets wavered around this margin I think this comes back to to Brooklyn and what is their path forward we can we we’ve heard the Rumblings yes Brooklyn wants to choose a direction going forward but I think there’s something ambiguous like you said waiting for well maybe it’s Giannis maybe it’s one of these Stars well that’s that’s a path but it’s an ambiguous one because all it does is get you five steps further down the road without knowing for sure what that ultimate step is going to be the other way where maybe you commit to claxon and say we’re going to be young and we still believe that he can be a part of the young Court okay that’s fine or where you say too rich for our blood and now we go into next off season and the direction is we have enough money to sign two top level talents if available and a third key player that helps make our roster look and fit correctly because we’ve often said this too this roster and these players even at the level that they are not Championship level not even playing Tournament level they just don’t fully complement one another so that’s something else that the money frees up as well so at a certain point becomes less about Nicholas Claxton and who he is as a player and how you how much you like him and you value him and you’ve developed him and more about is it going to stop us from finally getting a roster that looks like was intentionally constructed to win basketball games because it still doesn’t feel that way it hasn’t felt that way since the Kevin Durant Kyrie Irving trades yeah it’s just not they they’ve been stuck in this weird like you know they’ve just been stuck in this weird very weird limbo here and you know look I I this is no caveats here claxon’s a really good player like he’s an excellent switch Defender he is one the best switch fives um in all basketball I mean is he the I mean one of the best I he’s the list is pretty short of guys who are as good as him in open space against guards at the five right like so he deserves to get paid I it would it would be a shame to see him go and I know for as much like heat as he’s caught in the past around like some of the game parts of his game that have not gotten like so much better the the Nets will feel it if he doesn’t if he’s not on the team next year you’ll feel it for sure like you know Clowny might maybe steps up a little bit maybe get a little more D on Sharp or whatever you’ll feel the difference with him not being able to defend in space against some of these like quicker guards that being said when you don’t know your direction it is a little tougher with guys like this to like pay on and I and I I hate I I hate even saying it because it’s makes it sound like it’s antila and it’s not it’s just like they’re just so stuck here it’s their own fault it’s it’s not claxon’s fault it’s her own fault like for you said for not really knowing what’s going on and when you don’t know what’s going on especially too if it’s like hey there’s going to be a superstar awesome that sounds great um like but yes please but that’s a lot of hoping and wishing and it’s very hard to make decisions now with that in mind because you just don’t know I will say the one the guys who can make those decisions on are like super Elite long wi Defenders who shoot like that will just fit in with almost everybody that’s like that’s not going to be a problem guys like you know I mean even like the lower tiers like Trey Murphy and guys like this like it’s like you know what it’s it’ll work with somebody like Zion somebody else it’s not gonna matter outside of that it’s like a little tougher to make these early decisions on guys when you’re just not sure who the ultimate Superstars are going to be and that’s just like the one hard part and I would say that for claxon I would say that for a point guard I’d say that for almost everybody else it’s just going to be tough to totally know and by the way too I I think the last thing specifically to claxon in terms of you know oh how could it play itself out Nets resign them they don’t get a superstar next off season and claxon’s just on the team guess what I’ll I’ll be the first guy in line over the next four years of his contract saying he’s an excellent switch Defender he gets out and runs the floor really well he’s pretty darn good around the rim and also it’s diminished value on this roster right it’s always going to be that same story and you’re saying like it’s the roster’s fault like it’s yeah it’s going to be the roster fault it’s going to be where they currently are and then they’ll get younger and he’ll end up being the older veteran player by that point he’ll be 2728 and they’ll have this new Young core and maybe at that point he will end up getting traded for a team that needs that versatile Defender because they’re ready to win a championship and the Nets are finally going into their real rebuild in 26 27 28 at some point but the the reality of of looking at what Nicholas Clon and looking at what the Brooklyn are I still think that Nets fans rightfully that we sometimes talk about it this way because they they they’ve laid out a path that looks like they still want to pursue stars and want to build and compete now the Nets are closer to the Detroit Pistons in terms of where they are as an organization than they are to name team XYZ that’s in the playoff picture and that’s a hard pill to swallow like that’s a hard reality to just be yeah we’re one of the not good teams we’re not we’re not one of the teams that everyone goes oh boy if they just get X or Y no yeah we got some nice pieces everybody loves Mel Bridges that’s great we’re a team that misses the playoffs we’re you know look at the record last season that’s going to be the sameish kind of record this upcoming season barring some players taking exponential leaps so the reality of what this team is I think needs to be talked about that way and then that’s when you come back to Claxton and we’ve heard this from fans sometimes if you’re Pro Claxton you think that we’re bashing him when we have these discussions if you’re antilon like some are it’s how how could you ever consider paying him with where this team is and again left in the middle is Nicholas claxon a really good versatile switch Defender that seems to get talked about more as like a a a money stash than he does about a player that can contribute to winning basketball why because the Brooklyn Nets don’t win basketball games coming up here in a second some notes about the Detroit roster and also what it would mean for Brooklyn if Claxton left to Detroit or any team willing to pay him a big market value in free agency we’ll get into that to close out coming up next all right before we get that tell you about our friends over at prize picks look prize picks is daily Fantasy Made so easy you on prize picks you can turn $10 into $1,000 in a single game while watching your favorite sports all summer long you make a prize picks lineup in as few as 60 seconds you need to pick more or less on two to six players stat projections and you’re locked in with MLB it’s really really easy you just can go uh more or less on that overall hitter score you can go more or less on the pitcher strikeouts all the stuff that you really know when you’re just kind of dialing in on on the game and like I said $10 into a th000 that doesn’t sound too bad it’s very very easy to get into the action over on prize picks you’re just going to download the prize pick app today you’re going to use the code locked on MBA for first deposit match up to $100 once again you download that prize picks app use the code locked on NBA you’re gonna grab a first deposit match up to $100 prize picks pick more pick less it’s that easy all right so as we continue to tie a little bow on our lock on net episode talking about Nicholas claxon and what does feel like a growing market for him the one thing I want to mention for Detroit when you look at their roster obviously you have jayen Duren and he is a young talent and you have him under control and you don’t have to pay him big money right now so why go after Nicholas Claxton but just in terms of when you mentioned the talent across this roster it’d be a different decision they have to make potentially but when you look in the background of that even Isaiah Stewart or James wisman like these are not guys that there are there are players that offer certain skill sets that you don’t turn around and go well obviously we wouldn’t go pursue player X because we have bodies of a certain mold on the roster the Duren piece is interesting because he’s 20 years old and you just brought him in and what does that fit look like I also think that I’m interested as to how other teams look at Nicholas Claxton fitting into their roster specifically you know traditional where are you going to play him at now he doesn’t shoot we understand that but again on other rosters and other situations there are worlds where you don’t need Claxton to be playing at the quote five you can move him into a different spot though I don’t think Detroit is the roster that’s constructed currently to accommodate that does that make sense well I think you have to play with the five I think you’re I think true floor stretching big that can shoot from the outside you’re going to utilize Claxton differently like on the defensive end you’re going to treat him differently than going and saying you’re going to body up against big X in the paint you can say no you’re going to always switch out and play on the perimeter and pick up the power forward who has the outside shot or pick up player X or Y in those switching defensive schemes yeah I see that and I I will just go back to like the the the the Pistons roster real Quick’s like Duren like is a FL very flash play he’s very good he’s very athletic super Twitchy like he the defense is not great right and if you’re trying to PIR Cade with a defensive like Rim running five like you can tell yourself the story on on a slight overpay and then you’re like okay well maybe we do this and then we flip dur or something like that and I assume that would be the case in Detroit like I assume that this is not a you know coexisting version of this roster it sure seems like it and then you got big Stu who played a lot of the four last year maybe like you know you do they do they desperately really need shooting that’s the one part that like the claxon part doesn’t figure out it’s like maybe they just needed more shooting it’s like everything else is good but when you have just Monty Williams just can’t play guys who shoot and the roster doesn’t have them because Troy re Weaver never really got them like it’s clear if that might have just been the problem now look it’s hard to get shooting too but did it just need you know three four floor spacers that are just better than some of these other guys and that would have been made them better than historically awful probably but again if you’re like hey kad’s is a one he needs a great defensive guy yeah right and like a great switch Defender and we have these other like sort of lengthy switchy guys like oer and guys like this then maybe he just is and we don’t want to play Drop like whatever I think there are a lot of different stories to tell I I do think that like again it’s like feels a little weird and probably be an overpay but I can tell myself a few enough stories and I know people are gonna be like well Duran’s awesome yeah look he’s very he puts up a lot of stats and he is good he is good but I could tell myself a story where claxon’s like an upgrade there for different reasons well and by the way yeah maybe the story for Detroit is we overpay a little bit because we have the money for Nicholas claxon and we flip durren into the shooter that we need that we maybe don’t feel like we can just go get as we currently stand right we can’t just go get the shooter to help this team out but it’s a one you know one hand serves the other here claxon versatile Defender bring him in take Duren 20 years old a team wants him turn him into an asset maybe you get into the draft maybe you go and pursue a player like sometimes and that’s why I go back to Detroit and kind of changing over the regime here and saying like well that’s the most important part yeah retool what this roster looks like there’s a reason why we fired Monty Williams there’s a reason why this team has been bad for the last two decades like we need to figure this out and sometimes that just involves looking at Players not as talent and youth but as component same we talk about the Brooklyn Nets yes there’s Talent on the roster but do they all fit together and complement correctly and if not I can tell you a story for Brooklyn where why cam Johnson male Bridges uh cam Thomas why is it worth trading away cam Thomas when the Nets need shooting well if I could turn him into player X plus a pick that became y all of a sudden we get a more complimentary roster it’s not me advocating for trading any of these players away but you can start to paint a different picture when you get a little bit more liberal with how you feel about any of these one individual players and I I I think Detroit you have to look at at the top you have a new guy at the top it means that these aren’t his picks these weren’t his players and he’s going to come with his own vision of how this team builds itself out maybe behind solely Cade being the one piece obviously you focus in on if I had to make a bet right now I would still say Claxton is a net I I do think that’s probably what’s going to happen I think it probably for him even like non-basketball stuff I think like it’s I mean look these are also very difficult things to judge sometimes but like people that probably appreciate the New York scene on a certain level like fashion we has his own fashion line the Nets have been supportive of that like it’s hard to beat New York from that sense right and I’m not even like I look I I could probably be as far away from fashion as a human can possibly go while still living on this Earth um so I take that with a grain of salt and if I’m wrong and Detroit some kind of fashion Hub then uh you know leave it in the comments but I think there’s like probably some non-basketball stuff that probably would help the Nets in this case right like and I just think that that’s borne out from what we’ve seen from class in the past and what it seems like his interests are and if like geographically there’s one place that can really give you a lot of that and geographically another one gives you 20t extra million dollars over four years but you don’t get that like I don’t know that’s I that’s a formula I’ll never be able to do I think so I think in the end betting right now Thursday morning I think claxon signs a a contract in New York but I do think it’s interesting that this is like I don’t think this is just fodder you know like I I think like there’s a lot of reasons you can tell yourself this other story yeah 100% And it’s a good reminder that even though the Brooklyn Nets have bad it doesn’t mean that they don’t have valuable players that teams are interested in ultimately I I agree with you I think he is back and I guess it really just comes down to like what do we think the Brooklyn Nets end up pushing their dollar amount too and and what’s the flexibility maybe on claxton’s side we we know that he wants the big payday or any player should want the big payday but will there be kind of to your point is just the Comfort the familiarity the environment right you were drafted by this team you’re good to go they’re supporting your fashion off Court okay is that worth 23 vers 25 22 and a half verse 25 it might be like you know there there’s probably some things here in the margin that work for him it just comes down to whether or not the Nets are walking in the door saying we really like you at 18 to 20 million a year and another team is saying we’re willing to go to 25 30 you know it’s 25 30 million difference in a contract that probably opens up some eyes I know I would at least consider it if I was in that situation and you know there’s call from 18 and then buy like buy like $15 million worth of shirts and let’s call it a we save a little money on the cap we save a little money on the cap and you get a nice little like you know bottom line net net uh cash INF Fusion on the on the business and it’s just like you know but it’s a bunch of same day Claxton resigns with Brooklyn Nets claxton’s fashion line explodes we we don’t know what happen if you’re in the Brooklyn Net store you could get some you could get some Nicholas Claxton gear we don’t know where it came from but you could get some $16 million of shirts and pants please like I have a very big family and I just want to make sure that everybody gets closed I’ll take 4,000 hats thanks uh okay we’re going to get out of here make sure you subscribe to lockon Nets uh for all this and much more hard-hitting fashion news you can just subscribe uh to lockon Nets subscribe to lock Nets wherever you listen to podcast the rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated why that is Paul McCartney Oh one of the alltime grip hes back in tomorrow talking more Brooklyn that’s basketball basketball Quite honestly not surprised that Detroit is interested in making an offer for Claxton especially given they need a significant boost to their teams defense. However the $25 million salary that they are willing to offer Claxton because of their cap space is a little alarming because Sean would essentially have to be willing to match that salary to retain Claxton 😮….
But given Brooklyn's uncertainty to choose a direction could potentially letting Claxton go to Detroit set off a full rebuild? Or will Brooklyn still resign Claxton in an attempt to go down the star route and get a big upgrade in the near future 🤔???
Detroit Pistons: Nic Claxton and Cam Johnson
Brooklyn Nets: Jaden Ivey Jalen Duren the 5th pick in the 2024 draft and two future first round draft picks
Brooklyn potentially getting back an exciting young player in Ivey and a project in young center Duren alongside a valuable 5th pick in this year's upcoming draft would give Brooklyn a lot of different opportunities with going the rebuilding route.
Thoughts? 🤔
But honestly Memphis would make more sense as a sign and trade destination then Detroit so Brooklyn would likely have to resign Claxton or potentially face a nightmare scenario of letting him go to Detroit for nothing especially if a sign and trade doesn't happen 😮….
