1994 NBA Finals Game 1 Rockets vs Knicks Pt 1/4 | Reaction

what it do Dream Team here we are with the [Music] 1994 NBA Finals we got the Houston Rockets versus the New York Knicks MJ has retired from the league which means New York is finally able to get to the NBA finals and I know a lot of you were asking me that react to the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals and react to Michael Jordan’s full path through the playoffs and winning these championships the problem is a lot of these games aren on YouTube like full games aren’t on YouTube and then a decent amount of them that are are just going to be in absolutely awful quality I’m getting to watch all these final games now cuz I finally read the comments where a guy was like Hey all the 1990s NBA finals are on in the NBA.com and so now I’ve got to watch all these final games but like they don’t have like all the Easter Conference Finals from the ’90s and all that and so it’s just hard for me to find every one of those games so right now I’m to to rocking with the finals here we are game one we got yink we got elijan let’s see how we go flies everywhere and the rockets control Robert Ory picked up on a switch by John St I’m excited to see Kenny the jetun Char Smith and here comes John Stars Charles Smith [Applause] oh nice good defense by Houston my God they’re flying dog they’re legit flying on that possession oh pull up ah great pull up though the hands G one of the best of seven between the New York and the Houston ET Rockets with a long layoff have not played since May the 31st they were able to complete the playoff by knocking off Utah in the conference final five with couping on Indiana the [Applause] board okay Veron oh here we go here we go hake good travel good call good call he good defense Patrick as youbody a little B nervous a little yeah you you see the nerves for sure get their on the basketball and make sure they hold it and they get any kind of look throw it up to the basket to get rid of adrenaline pumping everybody going crazy right now oh about who nah ref I got to see it maybe it was his off hand is going to get some okay good call good call I see that left left arm on his shoulder calling cut across the lane and took it hard to AE elijan who was always patrolling in there looking to drop off his man and block shot was that a big thing for him making 12 strike free throws is he a good free throw shooter the production of Charles Smith 12 half points against the Nets oh wow he’s getting better with [Applause] series even back then that that’s what happened when they tell you how much that you made this many in a row that they put a js on you and you miss it always happens [Applause] throw there there you go Jesus Christ how are we missing these great defense oh my God tough shot a three nothing lead the Rockets all for their first four both teams looking like they had heavy legs in transition defense lots of f great look all right New York New York shaking them nerves off got a couple easy baskets by [Music] Ry fast and mean the ball though be able to throw that easy lot pass in those two games during the regular season Patrick Ying four for 20 five for 15 two of his worst games of the regular season Rockets winning 9373 here in Houston and 9485 in New York ory there we go y finally got something to fall Rober Ori I get to see a younger version of him off his foot but able to recover here we go facing single coverage goes to the Fade Away rebounded by Smith with some room yes Patrick you you was really like that wasn’t you okay standing in the lane looking to help out defensively Elijah taking advantage of oh easy money Jes how big isake and what is his arm or wingan the front no matter who was guarding that’s a three quter for Derek harer der harer late in the series against Indiana is given an MI a 10 for Ste what’s the fou is called oh hey New York locking up dog New York is locking up a couple of occasions Charles Oakley has had to pick up elijan in transition just too slow getting on the top side and elijan uses his body so well at shielding you off and walking you up the lane if he gets a good pass he can finish like that this a New York Nick team that went 57 and 25 the won the Atlantic for the second straight year then of the playoffs beat the Nets three games to one beat the blls in a very tough seven game set and beat in a difficult seven game one more hey New York’s defense man D that oh my God you got to be kidding me I’d be so heated for there it go and rebound [Applause] great look inside great defense to ke Smith you got to score down there big dog right now Charles Smith is absolutely exhausted he could not finish on that last the basket and he very weak in the leg here we [Applause] go by that’s the first call I got to see where the foul is this Houston Rocket team that went 58 and 24 the regular season won the Midwest Division by three games over San Antonio in the playoffs beat Portland three games to One Beat Phoenix in seven after great defense that would have been nice good foul John in the playoffs Starks call for his first and O th we go to the line Otis in his 10th season out of Providence not a good free throw shooter Jesus 56 field goal percentage 59 in the playoff he must be shooting his shots in the pain was not 100% Charles Barkley but still an effective offensive player Carl Malone in the Western Conference Final and now we’ll have to do battle with the likes of Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason not the scores that of course Barkley and Malone are but certainly will do a lot of damage around the board Joe cord taking charge getting one of the ball boys to handle the wet spot on the floor Ry tomov has to be trying to figure out exactly what team to you got one or two you got one or two and there you go oh both teams are great defensively both of these teams are beautiful there it go there you go hakee hake elijan with a second field goal and the Nick lead is three te oh great [Applause] look yeah good call ball is deflected out by the next well there was the delated double team by the Rockets came slow very easy for Patrick to find the open man Harper and this is the philosophy of the Rockets to double UI to get the ball out of the hands of the top score and quite frankly the Rockets do not respect the outside shooting of New [Applause] York anding it to the corner to Smith oy for three so the Rockets continue to have their shooting problems good defense man the niad is three trying to set the there go jumper there it go the next 12 the rocket s well most people that suspected trouble with the 7-Day layoff felt it would be in the shooting area mainly because the Rockets are such a perimeter oriented and three-point shooting team that when you lose your timing and your legs it affects your [Applause] shot so far both teams defensively just very solid teams solid doubl and tripled and playing single coverage he still scored and everybody else got off and uh so you got to make him work you got to try to limit his catches uh you got to put two three different guys on him and you just got to make him work for it now he’s a great great player and he will continue to work but we don’t want to break our defense down and give them all of the things they get out of their post game so you know we will pick and choose during the course of the game when we will double team him but for the most part uh we want to contain the other players [Music] too don’t leave open don’t leave open got that open shot so looks like the to mix it up him different looks he takes so many jump shots and in that scouting tape 15 jump shots to every inside move that’s amazing the previous possession oy was oh the heyy okay Charles Oakley Houston rotations are fast they’re fast on defense nice swing got to hit that there It Go all right Houston settling in they’re settling into the game good defense oh my god Patrick that’s just tough is third field goal a six the knck 16 and the rockets 12 leg blocker play though by Starks breaking up the F headed for the corner Center for cor patricky is really enjoying taking the ball into the middle fromer AR tow foul used fade maneuver Anthony Mason has come out to Charles Oakley and Mason right now guarding Robert Ory ory F to be ACH oh that was a foul oh my God hey hakee hake really like that [Applause] bro really like that for real San Cassel getting set to check in for the first time s c hey Sam Cassel Sam Cassel the impressive rookie out of Florida State who has really come on in the playoffs have that terrific game in game seven against the Phoenix Suns here at the summit oh good look oh you got to shoot that big boy oh my God bro hakee got a Wings span on [Applause] him there it go we board Easy Money the is TI 16 well Max normally doesn’t have that little in between game but the pressure by Stark forced them out of the Beyond The Arc into the lane and one of the rare got to hit that there it go and Oakley making them pay Oakley said y’all can respect this [Applause] jumper but Oley has have the touch right throughout the season Mick now lead by two and Jack with the of illegal defense for the first warning against when did they get rid of that to help out Patrick who was fronting elijan and no backside help hopefully recognized it decent pressure by Harper on the ball with s cel’s head but Charles Oakley ready to help his team Oakley and yui doing a good job defensively communicating switching up changing the look on Elijah onean has hit his first four shots too easy yeah if they’re not going to let you uh I guess kind of they’re fronting is absolutely awful if you’re not allowed to help off of the man who doesn’t have the ball like if it will make more fronting will make sense without the illegal defense rule I agree with the fronting but with the illegal defense role fronting the big man just makes no sense to me like why why on Earth would you would you do that they just got to throw it over the top of you once again Patrick yui trying to front and really just not good enough pressure by Anthony Mason out on the floor as another reason I don’t like the legal defense [Applause] revent that pass keep in mind 10 you have to get all over him and make him put the ball the floor because Elijah presents such a good Target now on Ying has second he will set down her that’s a tough oneck out of points has the hug not able to get going against Elijah three-point play first time the Rockets have left tonight Houston 19 New York 18 three and a half remaining in this opening quarter there you go there one more one more one more one more big dog is that on the L one oh that’s two got to get him up about the game now and that was a there as he’s going to Anthony right good he didn’t really push him has I don’t think yeah he didn’t really touch him go o aoin is that Harper that’s two of them and the Knicks now lead 21 to 19 Carl Herrera making his return is come on replacing that’s a three Off the Mark rebounded by poper Herrera had been out with a dislocated right shoulder the injury suffered earlier in the playoffs Williams running the basket and back comes ay just under 3 minutes remaining in this first quarter the Knicks 21 and the rockets 19 Herrera had a terrific game against the Knicks back in December here we go Madison Square Gard fourth and the rebound is reflected out by Mason now here day one uh putting in a a defensive system where we have definite things we want to do but but the thing that really made it work is I’m bless with guys who have that that Warrior type mentality who want to do it and take pride in it and oh that was could have walked into that shot you know have their their game plans and their systems he Veron maxw nice they enjoy it and that’s the hardest part of the game and at the off I and a beautiful move by Vernon Maxwell to tie the game at 21 and the foul is called yeah that’s a lot of fouls getting caught early they caught a lot of fouls on big man in the 9sy tomjanovich our staff incidentally mat has gathered together seven of his 10 cards here are some of the others all offensively geared as you look at the Rudy tomjanovich card collection Herrera was called for that foul offer off the back rim loose ball foul charged against the Knicks it’s on Mason loose ball foul against the Knicks Omar when you can shoot the ball as well as Rudy tomovich you didn’t have to play a lot of Defense back in those days he used to set up way out that’s when he realized how important playing defense was as far as winning basketball game and as I recall you’re looking at the retire Jersey of Rudy Tom Janovich who was in season with as a player and assistant coach now head coach five time allar as a member of the Rockets Robert Ori trying to give his Club a two-point lead as I recall among your numerous stuns on the NBA Trail you a one time teammate of of Rudy here in Houston the bo I gave the ball just under two minutes to go and the first try to put it back looking to get it to Williams but it was deflected out and last Touch by the Rockets well dark Harper getting a step on the rookie Cassel loses possession of the ball but as oh yeah good call great defense by Houston again great defense man for comes up wheels it and then gets it ahead to cell s good pull up Anthony Mason with the rebound yeah stop dribbling Anthony that don’t look like you he like so big and stocky like that seven game series a gigantic role in game six when they scored a unheard of 33 fast break points Pat Riley wants them to run at every opportunity after a defensive rebound a steal a block shot they have to get easy basket headt offense is you got to grab that big dog come on Charles first quter Rockets 22 the Knicks 21 mattas Rashad Hannah Storm from The Summit in Houston cus will be on hand at half time with the credential half great look beautiful pass too extends to a three point Houston Lee herrera’s Last Action game five of the series against Phoenix when we got John there it go I was waiting for you to get involved John goal and the rockets lead [Applause] 2423 Cassel guarded by Anthony both elijahwan and Ying sitting down after picking up foul Max I was about to say bro C keeps it alive kick it back out there you go nice back out one more one more ah oh that’s you took oh yeah good call good call bad foul bad foul a loose ball foul Dum foul seconds to go and this first quarter and Starks to the line well whene elijan goes to the bench where he is now with two personal fouls the US offense has to change dramatically because 80% of the offense normally goes through his hand run got to get one of them John pick and roll situation and doing a good job of spreading the floor and getting some good shots and even getting some offensive rebound opportun is very unusable for him at the other end the Knicks are just trying to pass the ball around and and hope to make a long shot right now they they do have a postup presence with Anthony Mason they have just not gotten the ball inside him yet in a clean situation Chris Jen rookie from Ohio State by way of the CVA has just come on replacing Odus Thorp that for the possible long range shooting at the end of the quarter rocket a mix tied at 24 15 seconds remaining in the first Maxwell play by STS great defense Cassel time running out Cassel with a spectacular shot Cassel able to hit on the driving hook ma the Ste and gets it off not have count that was a nice finish by Sam C that uh first first quarter uh you see in the beginning both teams shaking off some nerves shaking off some Rust New York shook off their nerves first it seemed like they started to get going but when Houston did get comfortable you you can see Houston was was rocking uh first impression of the first quarter both teams absolutely solid defensively both teams rotations flying out to their man contesting shots making it tough for the other team um Patrick started out really nice Hakeem Jesus man ande he hitting that jumper with ease dog that midrange elbow and a little bit further than that with ease and then God how how big is his wings span like it looks like he can reach forever getting some blocks but got both big man in early foul trouble so uh both teams kind of had to shift their offense where Charles Oakley solid first quarter um Derek Harper two big threes nice they G to stop leaving them open uh for Houston it was hakee it was Vernon Maxwell he started out I was like Dam man he had of control but then he start settling behind that three-point line started hey started get some things going uh started looking nice so it should be interesting kind of seeing this game play out seeing these teams get a fi for each other uh obviously I know who wins this NBA finals and I can see that like while I think New York will be physical and and be a defensive Force I just think Houston I think hakee going to be too going to be too much and I’m excited this my first time really getting to see Hakeem in full game mode like I seen highlights of but this my first time going to watch full games with Hakeem uh this will be interesting to see that Patrick Ying Hakeem battle well we’ll see it though uh that’s all we got for this first part make sure you subscribe and if you guys have uh if you guys enjoyed 1. Now you’ll see why so many legends go to Hakeem for high, mid, and low post tutorials and to train on footwork. He’s basically if MJ was seven feet. An unsolvable problem on both ends. The game is being called so close because those Knicks teams were the physical successor to the Bad Boy Pistons. This was when they really cracked down on that kind of overtly physical play. You can probably see by the amount of threes going up more seeds of the modern game, the guys coaching during the three point revolution played at this time or were watching and expanded basically what they saw. Both of these teams in particular have a bunch of snipers and drive and dish for 3 is the goal. Was relatively new. It they saw what the Bulls had done with Paxson and Armstrong (and Hodges and Tucker to an extent). Robert Horry is a rookie here. He was drafted to be their Pippen, you’ll see him bring the ball up occasionally and be utilized in Scottie like ways on both ends. He would eventually become Big Shot Bob with the Lakers after collecting 2 rings with Hakeem.

  2. This is the year i say bulls could’ve won 4th one in a row. They gave the knicks a harder time without MJ than the rockets gave them. But they NEEDED MJ to get over that hump.

The year after this tho… I don’t think MJ and co. get a 5th… even if MJ played the full season. Orlando magic was too dominant in east and the bulls didn’t have a replacement for Horace yet.

Another side thought… 89-90 eastern conference finals… bulls vs pistons. I think bills could’ve won a chip a year earlier. But game 7 MJ balled out, but no one else showed up. Pip had the infamous migraine that game. Then in finals… with the way pistons steam rolled to their second championship… most pundits said the bulls were that close to a championship.

  3. I really like that your watching these games, I personally grew up watching this type of basketball. I found it more entertaining that todays game.

  4. wow W reaction bro. i take any mean thing i ever said about you. hope yuu can react to the entire game. this isnt pretty basketball (the rockets sometimes) but with the Knicks involved, this WILL be a PHYSICAL series.. W REACTION.. W REACTION..

  5. WARNING.. The Knicks did NOT play PRETTY basketball. they BEAT PPL UP and out lasted them for the W.. The Rockets Bulls and other teams had to get down and dirty to match the knicks intensity.. this is NOT like todays basketball. The Knicks cant score and they drag their opponent down with suffocating defense… First team to 90 wins.

  6. One thing about this era games is I think there is a difference in the play by play and I find it surprising that you skip through most of the time out and miss what may be said during that time. I think you would benefit from hearing the announcers a bit.

  7. You are hearing from a person that was so much a fan of the Knicks that I got a degree from St. John's University in Sports Management, worked for NBA photos during my senior year, did an internship with the Knicks, my last semester, and briefly worked in basketball operations for the Knicks. But I sincerely apologize to you. This Finals set the NBA back two decades. Both teams shot under 40% for the 7 game series! The sad thing is that teams started to copy the Knicks (who copied the late eighties Pistons) and the league scoring and pace went down. Mike Fratello was the worst with the Cleveland Cavs. They did not run and took every second off the shot clock. They gave up only 89 points per game. We have this Riley coached Knicks team to thank for that. The only people that enjoyed those games were fans of the teams. Now the league is at the opposite extreme with the scoring averages hitting ridiculous highs. There needs to be a balance. Not sure if you're going to like this Finals. The Knicks were magnificent defensively but they had one consistent option on offense, Ewing. Ewing played well defensively but shot under 40% for the series. John Starks was either hot or cold. The Knicks did not have a third option. The Rockets had a great balance of offense and defense. Olajowon was a beast in the middle and he was surrounded by excellent three point shooters. But even they had problems shooting with the Knicks suffocating defense.

  8. "Smith, you gotta score down there big dawg"… spoken by EVERY KNICKS FAN FROM THE 90S.. the year before, in that Bulls Vs Knicks series… Charles Muthaf*ckin smith….. you know what.. I wont spoil it incase you watch that series.. but yea that KNicks team in the early 90s was some of the BEST defensive teams in league history

  9. Anthony Mason is actually a point forward. The Knicks use to use him to break the CHICAGO BULLS PRESS of JOrdan AND Pippen.. Mason didnt look pretty, but he had handles..

  10. Good work, sir! I like how you picked up on the nuances. These were excellent defensive teams. Houston was a better perimeter team. But, this wire’s comes down to Ewing v. Dream. And, for my money, Dream is the best center I have ever seen (on both sides of the court)!

  11. Not gonna lie, when I saw the video title I was like, "OH COME ON!" disappointed that you weren't going to the 96 finals. However, halfway through the video I'm giggling like a kid at how excited you are watching these teams play defense and at how good Hakeem/Ewing are. Lets not forget that Hakeem was the #1 overall pick in the draft with Michael Jordan and nobody thought it was a bad pick. If Ralph Sampson could have kept playing, there's no telling how good this Rockets team could have been.
