Maybe they just don’t want to give a near max contract to an aging Klay.

The DeVos family has been willing to go into the tax before they should be willing to do so again!

This is the right call. People keep talking about how much space we have and the want to bring in an aging star to create a big 3 with Paolo and Franz, but the issue is creating “big 3s” no longer works in the NBA and really hasn’t since the Heatles broke up. And then the new 2nd apron salary cap rule came in and REALLY trashed it all. The NBA is enforcing a mindset of a choice betweeen:
-You get two stars that you can pay massive contracts to, then surround them with a strong roster depth of mid to low contracts
-You get a big three, but you have absolutely no depth at all.
Look at the Suns, they literally cant afford to put a solid team around their big 3. Every other team that’s currently got more then 3 players making over 30 million is talking about offloading players in the future (Denver with Murray, Boston with Jrue/White, Clips with PG, GS with Klay, etc).
The FO has always been very adverse to giving long term contracts for this reason, and normally when they do, it’s like Wendell’s where it goes down over time or has a team option (we have 7 of them on the roster lol). They know with all this young talent they are gonna have to eventually pay up and if both Paolo and Franz stay on current trajectory they are gonna command some big money (and most likely Suggs as well, just not as high as those two). Handing out any big contracts to guys like Klay or PG very much jeopardizes that future plan (and the ability to put a team around those young guys).
Plus hell Paolo and Franz aren’t even close to their primes. Tatum and Brown took 7 years to get their first championship (and they are both STILL young as hell). By the time Paolo and Franz will be at that point there is no way guys like PG and Klay will still even be playing.
