Can the Knicks compete with the Celtics next season? | SNY

let’s get you guys a scoop on all the trending news in the NBA throughout the week with NBA Insider my guy Brandon scoop B Robinson if I had a studio audience man I’d have them on their seats plotting for you welcome back thank you brother kind of like Areno scoop scoop scoop sco brother always good to see you I’m back like I never left always look a lot of trending news this week so I know you were busy uh let’s start with the Knicks because we’re here in New York City the Isaiah hardenstein Mitch Rob news everyone is playing the game of who stays who’s going to go do you think there’s a scenario where both can stay and kind of kind of tell us what you’ve heard on the Isaiah hardenstein Mitch Robinson uh situation well the Oklahoma City Thunder as you’ve seen even as the NBA finals are over have been active recently bringing in Alex Caruso from the Chicago Bulls and so all signs have pointed that if the Knicks and hardenstein do not make a significant move um that it’ll be an Oklahoma City Thunder team that will be in to try to swoop um but there are other teams out there from folks that I’ve been talking to the Memphis Grizzlies are going to be heavy buyers this off season so you should be looking out for them but should could they stay I think there’s definitely going to be some folks who may have to take a bit of a a price cut uh if they’re trying to kind of uh get back to what they did this past off season because still got to look at Julius Randle you you still got to uh find out what’s going to happen with o anobi the Knicks have a lot it’s a good problem to have to have a lot of talent but ultimately um it could be one guy that that may ultimately not return if I had my DRS um I I think the Knicks could go in the direction of hartenstein and Mitchell Robinson has been coveted by a myriad of different teams so that’s something you you got to pay attention to there are other guys that the Knicks are looking at as well so and Mitch Rob is a fan favorite around the city so it’d be one of those things where it’s like we hate to see that player go but depending on what they could get in who would come in Nick fans would be like all right this may be what we need and this kind of leads into my next question what’s the Nick’s front office have to do this off season to be able to go to the Eastern Conference Final and beat the Boston Celtics in seven games I think you definitely need a complimentary Wing uh to go alongside of of Jaylen Brunson I think at points when you have such a a dynamic point guard who can score who can distribute in more you need someone who can spell you in minutes um I was hopeful that that you would have Alex Caruso at some point the Knicks and the Bulls at points during the season did have conversations they didn’t materialize but if I’m the Knicks I’m looking at a wing I’m looking at someone that can help Jaylen Brunson uh in in those minutes so um that’s something I’m paying attention to um I’m also looking at some other fillers as well Andre Drummond uh of the Chicago Bulls is a guy uh that has the interest of not just the Knicks has the interest of the Philadelphia 76ers as well as the Memphis Grizzlies those are some of the teams that I am hearing across the league that have interest in Drummond but ultimately when it comes down to it you got to if you one of the bigs doesn’t return you got to have a scoring big that can replace him that can get lobs who can uh rebound the ball and do more and then you need a wing that can that can spell uh OG on anobi if he returns another people in big minutes like that I hope they get whoever it is that they need because I think everyone can agree that the city was on fire oh for sure Nicks went on their run the city was on absolute fire uh let’s take it around the league because the last time we spoke it was the Dan Hurley was not going to go to the Lakers news I guess they didn’t throw enough of the bag JJ rck locked in to be their head coach I know he LeBron has the podcast I know he’s a brilliant basketball Minds what everyone’s saying but is JJ rck as a first time head coach going to be able to control that locker room and bring the Lakers back to what they used to be and please say it what you chess well first of all when you look at LeBron who will likely opt out of his current deal it’s believe as wiely believed across the league that uh he will return and sign a better deal uh that will benefit both he and the Lakers but um I think the thing about JJ reck from folks that I speak with across the league that stands out as how relatable he is to to players last time I I spoke with you virtually on this show I talked about how you look at the next 10 years of basketball you’re going to not recycle the the Doc Rivers the Mike Danton and more and so JJ reic is a basketball mind but he doesn’t have the experience as a head coach he is a basketball mind but if you really been paying attention to the podcast throughout the course of the Season he’s been auditioning uh for any level of head coaching positions this wasn’t his first interview um that he’s had uh with teams over the last couple of years he’s thrown his name into the hat and he’s been able to do it but the thing about him when I talk about him being relatable I’ll share a funny story uh JJ reic as a player in the NBA I remember I was at NBA Allstar Weekend in Toronto back in 2016 and he was doing a media uh scrum and prior to one of the the activities he was participating in and he was telling me how he was enjoying Toronto and he goes man I was sitting uh in Toronto with my wife and I’m drinking wine and watching NE Netflix and we were just chilling so I I said to him so you were Netflix and chilling he goes yeah so then like two days later he goes on his podcast and he goes yo somebody just he he realized what he said didn’t realize what he said he goes I learned what Netflix and chill was today and so the fact that he said yeah then he went back at his podcast and I posted it and he was in the comments laughing with me about it but uh the fact that he’s not that far removed uh from playing the game the fact that he did television for a year at ESPN and the fact that he’s so dialed in with the podcast stuff and all the New Media um that would make him relatable but being relatable versus being a coach and and guiding a team are two different animals um it’s going to be a a a I feel like whether people want to admit it or not there is a level of rebuilding despite the fact that you still do have two stars currently and Anthony Davis and LeBron James on that team um but that’s a lot of pressure you said Lakers and rebuild in the same sentence I no absolutely not the Lakers that that team cannot rebuild so I’m going to put you on the spot right here scoop who’s got more pressure to make this thing work LeBron or JJ LeBron just like that well when you look at LeBron James usually for the exception of when he was in his first in with the Cleveland Cavaliers which was about seven years the Miami Heat and the second iteration of LeBron and Cleveland was about four years yeah at this point in Los Angeles this is year five one I don’t think he owes the city of Los Angeles anything at this point because despite the fact that it was a bubble Championship it’s still a championship right and in season Championship okay but at the end of the day some would argue you’re chasing personal accolades some would argue that you’re you’re chasing records because the western conference is not any easier at this point you’re going to have to contend with a Minnesota you’re going to have to contend with a Denver Memphis is on their way back with John Morant coming back you have Oklahoma you have Houston that is on the come up so I have always felt um that the Lakers were going to have to name a coach in place before the draft because Brian James and his draft prospects are there one and then two LeBron opting out Philly fits like a glove personally I’ve always felt wow that teaming with Joel embiid teaming with Tyrese Maxi in Philadelphia was a lot easier because it’s I don’t want to say the Eastern Conference is easier but the western conference is more loaded at this point um so I always felt that the succession of JJ reck uh being named the coach and then the the happen of the Lakers drafting bronny James at this point and Lebron opting in he laid his cards on the I play UNO I’m not a really a spad guy but laying the cards on the table and this is what I have the Optics of sitting courts Island Cleveland and more this is what you want JJ reck has been auditioning for that job but ultimately if you’re just chasing personal records at this point you stay in Los Angeles if you’re looking for another championship however Philadelphia is a gleaming light okay may have to run to the east CU like you said the the West is is is loaded it’s also young as well uh real quick the Cavaliers still haven’t hired their head coach what do you hearing on that end and what’s what’s the hold up the chatter across the league from folks that I’ve spoken with that it’s neck and neck between JJ bgo who is an assistant with the Charlotte Hornets as well as former Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny ainson uh Kenny has has auditioned and interviewed for many of jobs a couple of years ago uh was looking at Charlotte and um but ultimately um Kenny ainson does have relationships with Jared Allen during his Brooklyn days as well as Caris LeVert so I’m hearing it it’s neck and neck in my opinion I think that Kenny ainson would be a great fit specifically because he’s won an NBA championship as an assistant coach on Steve K bench um so we’ll see you’ll hear in the coming days what the decision ultimately is but uh Donovan Mitchell as as a as a guy who has one year left on his deal would definitely get a gym Kenny ainson so I’m hoping that that is the decision that the Cleveland Cavaliers make I was hoping you were going to say sam Cassel because it’s like it it’s he’s due he’s due so I spoke to Sam Sam and I text and um I asked Sam a few months ago um do you still want to go this assistant coaching route um they’ve of he’s of course won another championship as a member of the Boston Celtics and he said his goal uh is to become a head coach in the NBA um but I think the right opportunity does need to come along I’m not hearing that Sam is in that conversation I have heard that both he and ran Rondo are assistant coaching candidates that JJ reck is considering in Los Angeles okay so we’ll see all right scoot be tell the people they can find you because I know Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson showed you some love going on Instagram so tell the people all about Scoopy Scoopy radio available on those streaming platforms we average about 10 to 20 million streams annually if we have anybody from the voice of Siri DJ KET Mark cubin flee from the 1. to be fair, the only reason why the Knicks didn't go far was because of injuries,
    – loss of Randle after the Heat game in January
    – Robinson getting hurt by EMBIID
    – Bojan during the sixers series
    list goes on and on
i think with a little retooling , they'll run it back with the same roster for another chance

  2. Terrence Shannon Jr. With the 24th pick please Leon, please Wesley. Don't miss on him. He is a truly explosive player. He is Devin Booker and Donovan Mitchell 2.0 or even Better

  3. Only if we have a good mix of players defensively and offensively around Brunson…the team has the pieces to the puzzle, the question is, can we put it together? A good starting point is the players we had at the time of J R season ending injury…but I realize that pro players are employees and want to get the highest salary possible wherever they might play…let’s see what happens…and thanks for a rather surprisingly rewardingly 2023/24 season…let’s go Knicks!

  4. They sure can IF they stay together and they stay healthy towards the end. This past season they were playing with half their players by the end.

  5. Players did not respect Redick as a player, and I know they, meaning players other than Lebron will not.
