EXTREMELY RARE! – Bobby Marks talks Knicks acquiring Mikal Bridges from the Nets | Get Up

you’re talking about trading five first on a swap for a player like male Bridges who was a elite role player but definitely not an All-Star even uh but this makes more sense when you take a step back and look at what else this does for the Knicks obviously there’s the villain NOA chemistry and connection here but that’s not the only thing he is also a player who’s played every game in his NBA career his durability is spectacular this also enables them to match up with the Boston Celtics the Champs they have these great Wing players this is the kind of player that they need absolutely and here’s the other thing and CJ knows this because he negotiated the deal as the head of the players union under the new CBA it is very hard to have two or three max contracts on a team at the same time and build out your whole roster the kale Bridges has one of the highest value contracts in the NBA I know there’s been some some discussion about maybe Paul George going to the Knicks in recent days Ryan um Ryan Paul George literally makes $30 million more than Bridges bridges puts up put still puts up numbers and play every game and I think almost most importantly out of all this this is a bet on Jaylen Brunson this is the niick saying we don’t need to trade all these picks for a superstar we have a superstar let’s give this Superstar the the pieces that that he needs to to to maximize himself and enable them to still have enough money on their books to retain ogan and no because that’s a key part of this they have to finish this deal by keeping OG OG on the perimeter as well Monica everyone knows that you have the greatest play off reaction to something that happened with the Knicks against Philadelphia but what was your reaction last night when hearing about this trade they did it oh my God they actually pulled this off like this was the inside well I don’t to say inside joke in terms of it being a secret here in New York I think it was known nationally Nicks fans took over barklay Center Josh Hart and Jaylen Brunson gave Mel Bridges the blues Josh Hart told him to hit his line like we had sort of ideated around this idea in terms of K brid’s skill set but the reality was I didn’t think that this was in the realm of possibility in fact Ryan if I had known that this had an actual shot of getting done I would have long said you go Bridges as opposed to a guy like Paul George who was older who had struggled with durability um who was probably closer to the end of his prime than he is toward the middle while to Wendy’s Point Mel Bridges may not jump off the pages terms of Allstar I’m old enough to remember last week on this show when we were dissecting podcast P’s comments about fit in terms of where he might go in this course of this offseason Leon Rosen company never had to question the fit here in terms of Mel Bridges being a part of that villain NOA tapestry and being a good fit for what Tom Tibido and the Knicks want to do I was like wow another brilliant move tip of the cap for sure CJ this isn’t the Blockbuster name that PG-13 would be but what does acquiring Mel Bridges do for the New York Knicks I think it gives the Knicks flexibility Wendy talked about the cap situation he talked about depth he spoke about Jaylen Brunson how impactful he’s been throughout his tenure with the Knicks there was once upon a time where people were saying it was an overpay for Jaylen Brunson now it looks like a huge huge underpay and they’re surrounding him with a super team of role players you got length you got athleticism you have the tiido types of players that you need to be successful with the way that he coaches play a lot of minutes play both sides of the ball focus on defense focus on making sure that Jaylen Brunson has space to operate they also have Julius ranto o by the way who’s coming back off an injury they have a chance to sign OG I I love I love this trade for them because you get a versatile Wing who can shoot he can defend and more important than anything he doesn’t miss games uh The Vibes never lie and I think the New York Knicks are going for Vibes they’re going for consistency and they have four players from the 2016 National Championship team in Villanova NBA front office Insider Insider Bobby Mar you spent some time with the Nets tell us how rare this deal is between these two New York teams Ryan the Cold War is Over the last trade was 1983 between both teams I was at the nets for 20 years I can’t remember one time I picked up the phone and called New York and traded uh trade scenarios with them so it is extremely extremely rare and I give Shawn marks a lot of credit to Nets GM here where basically they traded them maybe the piece to get them an NBA championship and and certainly Brooklyn is on a different timeline than where New York is and I think that the one thing that we we haven’t discussed about is that now Brooklyn has control of their own first round picks in 2025 and 2026 as part of the uh second trade that they made with with Houston here so they can bottom out they can get a top pick and then they can go in 2025 offseason with over $100 million in cap space Wendy you start to look at the roster with now add Mel Bridges and earlier CJ mentioned Julius Randle does this trade have any implications on his future in New York yeah so Bobby can speak to this but again under the new rules and the way this trade is structured the Knicks only have about only have about $50 million that they’re now allowed to spend uh going forward the rest of this off season because they have hard capped themselves the way the trade is structured now the trade has not been made it won’t be made until after the draft there could still be other pieces but but you wonder do the Knicks look at other moves here that would enable them to you know change the way they distribute their money so they obviously got OG anobi o anobi is going to require a big amount of money to resign they have Isaiah hartenstein who they’d also like to resign does Julius Randall fit um you certainly look at their lineup and you see a bunch of perimeter Defenders and ball movers Randall is sort of a little bit from the previous era of Nicks basketball um but he’s obviously still an all Star level player so um he is a valuable piece but the Knicks now that they’ve gotten this done may look at ancillary deals and also frankly the Nicks have two picks in this draft tonight they are probably going to use those picks they need to hit on some pieces that could help them down the line but it’s also possible that they could look to move one of those picks or even both of them in a separate deal today that would en able to get them some more cap space under that c under that that cap now so this is still very fluid the Knicks are not done but the core of their team is coming into focus and they’re directly challenging the Boston Celtics does this trade get the Nicks to the Boston Celtics well it gives you the elements you need to defend the Celtics that’s for sure if you just talk about Mel Bridges oan noi and I’ll throw Josh Harden there right um these are guys that have length they’re athletic they can challenge and make it difficult for whichever one of the core four of the Boston Celtics but I actually just want to go back to something Wendy said like I think obviously you hope to sign Isaiah hardstein but he had a terrific year and I think if you have to weigh it out with this trade in mind hardenstein or oan noi in terms of who you’re going to be able to hold on to I think you got to get ogan and noi done would be my thought um so that leaves some wiggle room in terms of maybe needing some help at the five but in a perfect world if this team could run it back and just add Mel bries Bridges like they’re right there like I’m very willing to put them at second in the East if it looks the same plus Bridges I just don’t know if it will be able to remain that way CJ these four Dudes hung a banner up at Villanova so these are four former college teammates it seems like the Knicks are going chemistry over star power what does this do for a locker room when you have a team that could be this close I think it does a lot for the locker room it’s important that you like your co-workers especially in the sport setting you spend so much time around the players whether that’s on the buses on the planes in the hotels the team dinners these guys have a rapport they’ve already proven they can win together at the Collegiate level Jaylen Brunson is a pitbull he’s a closer you got Mel Bridges who’s played in the finals before you got Josh Hart who’s just a competitor you have all of these pieces divon Chino as well who defend they shoot the ball well they move it it’s almost as if they are building a team specifically towards contending against the Boston Celtics you got tall Wings you got athletic players you got guys who are durable you look at the Boston Celtics outside of porzingis they were extremely healthy throughout the year with their core group of guys they got used to playing together and you seen the results it’s like the Knicks are trying to combat that with players who are long athletic and get along and I think the Vibes The Vibes are going to be worth at least five wins Mak the chemistry alone at least five TJ that’s low five is low five isach a good coach get extra a good coach will get you five wins and this is the team that even unhealthy was able to push the Pacers in the second round Bobby how does this trade impact the way the Knicks move throughout free agency now yeah we’re going to do a little bit of napkin math right now they have $50 million not including both first round picks they have the 24th and 25th pick in the draft those picks equal about $6 million so you’ve got to figure out what that OG an anobi contract is so if it’s at 33 to $34 million it really only gives you about $17 million to kind of build out your bench here with uh minimum contract so I think York’s Ryan’s going to be active tonight maybe moving off one of those picks maybe you can pick up a couple second round picks Which is less expensive here but there’s certainly some work to do in New York as far as building out that bench with limited means financially well when you look at the New York Knicks they understood they were able to make a deep run without a team that was fully healthy now adding Mel Bridges who is always on the court I mean the guy played an extra game two years ago I think this team is on the right track and the moves tonight and going forward could put them as close to Boston as any team in the entire East [Music]

  1. Dude alot of picks to give up BUT IF they resign OG DUDE Mikal and OG literally the 2 best 3 and D players in the league. Now the Knicks gotta trade Randle to free up close to 30 mil to resign Hartenstein and go out and sign maybe someone like Tobias Harris and another SF/PF hybrid.

Brunson, Mikal, OG, Tobias Harris, Hartenstein as your starting 5 and
Dante, Josh Hart, McBride, Mitchell Robinson off the bench. That is a really really strong looking team man.

    Or Dude

If they can move up in the draft and get Clingan or Edey with those and Keep Randle and let Hartenstein go ooof. I dont mind that either Start Robinson and get Clingan as your backup not bad at all.

  2. I kept saying there was no way to get Bridges out of Brooklyn and I’ve never been so happy to be wrong.

  3. Great addition but it’s an overpay. That’s fine, sometimes you have to pay up, but to give up all those picks in some very good drafts seems excessive.

  4. Julius Randle is now the key factor, will they keep him or move him? Will he play into their system and not dominate the ball?

  5. So let me get this straight…..You don't make a move for a PG who is STILL an all NBA caliber wing(who ironically people say will make the 6ers a contender if aquired, the same 6ers the Knicks just beat in 6..)..because he's injury prone, but you turn around and trade your 2 best young players and "essentially" a 1st round pick, for an injury prone, but very good role player in OG, who you're willing to pay up to 40 million(+..) per who has never made an All Star Team to say the least, and traded 5/6 first round picks for another ROLE PLAYER….That sounds like Win Now moves to me, not "building for the future" moves…..So why are we talking about PG's age when he's by far better than both those younger players still and a bigger wing at that than both of them…..Make it make sense……🤔🤔…………

  6. 9:22 $17 mill to build out the bench?? That honestly should be enough, our bench rn is Duece Donte and Hart, out side of a back up big and maybe another wing what do we really need??? And we could get that in the draft so that’s not even touching the $17 mill yet

  7. I WANT ESPN TO PUBLICALLY ACKNOWLEDGE THE ACCUSATION MADE BY FORMER CHICAGO BULLS EMPLOYEE, HALLEEMAH NASH WHO HAS PUBLICALLY ACCUSED JJ REDDICK OF CALLING HER A "N-GG-R " TO HER FACE

  8. Knicks should prioritize hartenstein imo. Too much redundancy with wings if you get og. If you get og than Randle has to go.
