the pick is in the Portland Trail Blazers have made a selection in the 2024 NBA draft I’m tanra batist and we’re joined by Mike Richmond from locked on Blazers to break down the Blazers selecting Donovan clean with the number seven pick presented by LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the qualified candidates you want to talk to you faster so post your D for free at linkedin.com logon so Mike how did the Blazers lock up and get Kling Kong at seven well I guess the the teams rumored to be chasing uh Donovan kingan either were unwilling or unable to strike a deal to Leap Frog the Blazers I think there was a lot of reporting that Portland was interested in cling and leading up to the draft even some reporting that they were interested in themselves trading up to make sure it happened um and when uh you know when Houston made their pick at three and then Charlotte at six it became clear that it was going to happen I think those were the two sort of big big moments or you know pressure points the Blazers had to survive to get their guy and now they got him speaking of big what’s the biggest upside to this particular big for the Blazers front Court yeah I mean he’s he’s gigantic that he’s he’s he measured yeah he measured over S1 in shoes um I believe he had a 97 standing reach at the combine like he’s just he’s just a giant person I am person personally a little concerned about what he does on offense um I think of his lack of shooting range um and sort of how he can score outside of direct post-ups and I don’t even think he’s going to be a direct post-up guy is it might limit him a little bit but he’s gonna defend the rim he’s GNA be a guy who plays mostly in drop coverage and and is gigantic around the basket it’s still the most valuable thing in the NBA is to prevent teams from getting layups and he will be able to do that at you know at a probably a relatively high level and we’ll see how early he can get to that relatively high level but he’s the defensive upside is there the passing he has some passing chops that I think is are really intriguing um and if he becomes even somewhat of a positive in other aspects of his on offense I think he’s gonna be a really good player where do you see him kind of fitting in in terms of where DeAndre Aon is what he brings to the table versus what Kling brings yeah that’s a tricky one right um they the Blazers traded their franchise icon a year ago and the big prize piece they got back in that trade was this 25-year-old Center and now less than a year later they’ve maybe drafted his replacement I don’t think they need to trade DeAndre Aon now like immediately in July um I’m not watching TV maybe they’re trading him right now and we’ll have to re-record this but I don’t think they need to I don’t think they need to rush and do it immediately because I don’t think Donovan kingan a guy who wasn’t like a big minute guy in college is always is all of a sudden going to step in and play 30 plus minutes a night in the NBA as a rookie I think that would be uh wouldn’t just wouldn’t be realistic so they can wait a little bit but I think it’s pretty obvious that by making this pick DeAndre Aiden’s days in Portland are numbered I don’t think you can play them together and I don’t think you draft someone at seven with all of this reporting we want this dude we want this dude we want this dude if he isn’t part of the the future the medium and long-term future and the dude you just traded for last year is probably not yeah yeah and like you said it’s amazing to think that he was there at seven because he could have gone up the board we heard as high as number one or he could have gone slightly down the board so yeah Portland indeed got the big that they wanted now for more on the Blazers subscribe to locked on Blazers on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts and for more on Donovan kingan let’s get an inside look on his path to the NBA Donovan kingan clling Kong from the two-time defending champs Yukon Huskies the most impactful player in col basketball hi I’m marketto from lockon Yukon at 7’2 280 pounds Donovan is an imposing figure on the defensive end with surprising touch and footwork on the offensive end his basketball Acumen is underrated and will develop as a plus three-point shooter at the NBA level I’d put Donovan as a comparable to a potentially tougher version of a Rudy goar with the passing and shooting ability of a Damon sabonis Kling in will 100% have an IM immediate impact from from whoever drafts him in the NBA for more on Donovan klling in all things Yukon follow And subscribe to locked on Yukon on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast and for continuing coverage of the 2024 NBA draft subscribe to locked on NBA on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day
