Jerry Reynolds: Devin Carter will “probably be an awfully good player”

visit some friends out in the Boondocks and uh listen to listen to you guys uh on your on the show as well as I could for as long as I could and tried to learn something I think I failed but I tried did did anything we we said make any sense to you a lot actually I you know talking about the guard line and and certainly I I did think there’s a lot of uh thoughts good thoughts about Carter I mean just talked to some friends that knew more about it I think and I did most felt that uh they that they didn’t think he’d slipped to 13 you know that uh they had him higher than that there was a little concern about the shoulder though yeah and one guy told me they thought that hurt him a little because people just didn’t know enough and and then uh the other thing probably the only negative I said about him was a good shooter but got a kind of a strange delivery shot yes yeah somebody said that I wonder who uh noticed that hey coach anyway yeah go ahead coach no that I mean you know everybody pretty much on board the guy’s a baller you know and uh that’s uh you know it’s going to bring it every night and you know decent a little bit small but but long so you know uh obviously you got an aw probably got an awfully good player you know I know there’s a lot of questions around about what else is coming you know and now I think I’m like Kyle I I was so surprised that Dalton connect slipped yeah and and and the Lakers got him oh I’m so depressed about that I’m with you I’m with you Jerry seriously like of all teams the Lakers oh he was just sitting there for them to take oh my gosh uh he’s a bucket getter you know he’s gonna get he’s gonna get open shots well anyway we can’t we just can’t control everything in the draft yeah we just gota focus on us right now focus on us coach we did make a trade uh Davon and Sasha going to Toronto what do you think about that and and how come it didn’t work for those two guys uh long term here that’s that’s a great point you know I think with with Davon he’s really a little bit more of a halfcourt player like he was in Baylor I think the uh fastpac game probably he wasn’t as good at it as you know he had reason to believe he could be I mean I think he got better every year and I still think there’s a a player there I don’t think the last chapter has been written there and uh you know Toronto might be a good start for him you know a second start but uh with Sasha of course the injuries and I don’t know it just uh you know basically he’s a spot shooter who couldn’t get enough spot shots that’s where I looked better yeah Jerry I you you mentioned Devin Carter and the unusual jumper um and it is it’s a little unusual you obviously it’s it was accurate last year he reminds me of a guy that you know sometimes a player will get the ball he’s gonna shoot then he’s gonna pass and he looks like a guy every time he shoots it he looks like he’s gonna pass but then he goes ahead and shoots it that’s part of the little hitch in his getalong but my question is can you think of guys um from your time as as a fan even and also of course doing this professionally that there were questions about their shot the funkiness of it but who overcame that for whom it really wasn’t an issue yeah I can uh uh Kenny Smith was one you know had a strange you know it was always strange he kind of shot a sid spinning Ball uhhuh but uh you know I know his rookie year Russ Bill Russell we were talking about and he kind of wanted to try to change it and I said yeah but it goes in and uh and you know it’s one of those things he did every time you know the consistency so I kind of look at that way you know kind of like halberton early now he speeded up his process but he but you know it was a little bit unusual his long delivery and he’s kind of shortened that but uh yeah if a guy’s making them uh you know he he’ll probably figure some things out maybe you got to speed the delivery up a little bit but the fact that it goes in and uh yeah I you know I I’d probably just I try to leave him alone for the most part just give him reps to make sure he’s got you know is consistent with it and and maybe if he can you know just speed the process up maybe get a get that little hitch speed it up I guess yeah but yeah Kenny was a a strange one you know oh well of course I remember Magic Johnson come leg could shoot a leg and became came an outstanding shooter and of course I remember guys come to the league couldn’t shoot a lick and five years later they couldn’t to the lck you know it’s interesting you bring up the the the shooters with the hitch um I thought Eddie Johnson had a little different kind of shot too right he wasn’t uh and I know he can make it he was a dead eyye shooter but just his shot was a little different a little different yeah you know he he that’s a good point yeah it was a little bit unique now he didn’t think about it he didn’t really need much time and I think guys were fooled because don’t want to compare him to slow-mo but he trick guys he he was a little slower than they thought he was you know and and they’d kind of you know kind of try to guard him like they would say somebody super athletic and that just wasn’t who Eddie was but he was a you know he shot it the same every time under pressure or not pressure that’s that’s a you know that’s the key is uh the guys that shoot the ball as well if not better when it counts so you know I never done this like you have professionally Jerry but it sounds to me like you’re saying if the ball goes in that’s a good thing and you leave that alone huh I’ve always thought so I I like I say I always remembered with Eddie I mean Joe ax wanted to Trad him so bad and Bill Russell asked me why why why does he want to trade I said I think he because wanted too much money and and he said he always focused on Ed he can’t guard anybody I said well he scores 20 and the guy he’s guarding scores 16 but if everybody does that we’ll be 82 and0 uh Jerry as we look at the roster now and obviously as far as we know Monty still has some work to do he’s still working on things we’ll see what happens right now looking at the roster what do you see as the biggest uh roster need well a long athletic preferably power forward it could even be a long Wing uh but but because I think it’s a right wing you know it’s kind of like a I thought if if Ron Holland had slipped there you know the Kings could have made it work because I think he’s got some real star potential I I mean that was just an opinion I know I did a podcast with the Kings Herald and I just you know thought you know that’s a guy who could be a big time guy all he has to learn to shoot a little bit of course somebody else decided that too higher but but I mean I clearly a power forward would be my number one thing you know uh this team needs more size more length more toughness uh and then a guy that fits well with domas I so I think that would you know if you could get a big time guy or somebody that really upgrades that spot you could feel a lot better about starting this the season you know I mean I think your guard line probably is going to be good I don’t know how it’s all going to sort out and Keegan is probably ready to have even a better here but uh you just this is a West and boy I just don’t see you know if I guess what I’m saying is this is a roster when you start in October be hard to be real optimistic right it’s still plenty of time though uh coach we got the free agency and and trades and I was going to ask you about trades you’ve been in on trades you’ve how difficult is it I guess because it seems like the Kings you know they were in on Caruso they were in on seaka you know what’s it going to take to get over to hump with some of these trades you think you know that that’s the thing and and and and really it’s like with with money and those getting close there’s sometimes there’s nothing you can do about it if the other team are looking for something a little different and I I think it’s just a case of keep working the phones keep working and and at some point something will click you know I mean it it just takes the other person to say yeah okay let’s do that and uh and that’s kind of where they are I think they’re just you know just uh there’s some possibilities out there I I’m fairly confident Monty and the staff’s going to get something I really am I mean I think they they basically you know the the move was today was a you know a roster move let’s face it and uh pretty much yet and so they they they they know they know more than we do that what they need and uh so I I I’m sure they’re in on several guys and you know you as as Kyle said got all summer got all summer the season season isn’t starting yet so I I got kind of tell the I know people on King’s Herald a little bit is like don’t uh don’t panic yet they’re not trotting out there to play right so right just uh just uh trust you know I I trust in in the staff here and I really do I think they’re good I think the coach is terrific and and uh they’ve done a good job so why can’t we uh give him a pass here for a few more months Jerry I want to ask you about a player that I know both you and Kyle love and I think he’s great too but you guys love uh Bobby poris his name came up in you know for what it’s worth rumors this week that the Warriors might be working on something I’m wondering if I know you just got the pacemaker did it do like a a double take when when Bobby pse’s name came up and how exciting is that to you that he may actually he could Bobby poris could be available well it it started jumping I’m telling you I mean I love that guy I mean he’s a balls out player you know he’s tougher than ever you know and and I mean can shoot the three can place him back up five very well you can play you know very effective small ball with him at five and he’s not that small but uh yeah he’d be a perfect fit I think he’s got two or three of his best years ahead uh yeah Bobby Porter so I yeah I go back that wild eyy Buckaroo that’s just what you need here that’s what I’m talking about Coach Jerry thank you so much as always we appreciate especially when you’re you know you’re on vacation so thanks well hey my life is a vacation at this stage so uh anyway anyway enjoyed it as always all right Jerry talk
