Cristopher Sánchez’s first-career complete game shutout powers Phillies to 2-0 win! | Phillies PGL

[Music] [Applause] [Music] is there a better sport than baseball seriously last night’s a nightmare tonight’s a dream for Christopher Sanchez and the Phillies Ben Davis Michael barcam Phillies postgame live presented by Cure auto insurance two nothing Phillies we know that one to0 in the second half but Benny here’s the thing since Christopher Sanchez signed his contract extension one week ago tomorrow and then one week ago coming up on Sunday pitched a shutout Innings he now has 16 shutout Innings since he signed that extension your thoughts on what we saw tonight from the entire team led by Sanchez on the mound he was masterful absolutely masterful was Christopher Sanchez tonight 45% change UPS 45% and that tells you something that how good a feel he had for that ground outs that is typical Christopher Sanchez just two Fly ball outs and to go along with the nine punch outs he was on top of his game tonight his fastball command glove side was impeccable and that really just set up the outside part of the plate with his change up the slider been better 177% sliders tonight he was just flat out awesome he was and to hear John krook say that he was proud of Christopher Sanchez I mean my goodness that that’s saying something let’s go to John right now John the sincerity was evident in your voice it was hard felt what about his performance what about the way he has stepped up in his past two starts in particular has impressed you so much well everything Michael you know you know when I when we talked to him after the game and I mentioned you know you know my feelings towards Christopher and and my feelings are you know he deserves everything he’s getting because every year it seems like you know who we going to get where’s Sanchez you know is he going to be okay are we going to be able to count on him well you know what yeah you can count on him cuz he’s one of the best going right now and you know so happy that he got the contract and and just so happy that uh you know when you watch these guys here at the Ballpark you watch how hard these pitchers work and how they compete against each other in a good way uh you know watching each other’s bullpens and Christopher even mentioned that you know watching those guys bullpens it it uh you know it helps him uh when it comes his turn to pitch but uh yeah I I first of all I love guys like Christopher Sanchez that basically has had to work for everything he’s gotten in this game and and he’s and the Phillies rewarded him but he it’s not more of a reward than he deserved it and that’s that’s bigger than getting rewarded for it Johnny getting to the big legs I had a couple guys I really looked up to obviously Tony gwy Andy Ashby Ken k guys that have been in the game for a long time and they kind of took me underneath their wing and said hey this is how we do things things at the major league level and Christopher Sanchez talks at length about what Zack Wheeler means to him and some of the other veteran pitchers on this team how important is that to have know those guys on the team that you can look up to and kind of teach you a lot about the big league baseball well Ben it’s huge and you know I I say this all the time that it you know if Caleb kin tells something to to Christopher Sanchez and Christopher will listen and and try to apply it Zack Wheeler can tell the same thing but it it just seems different when it comes from a veteran player like Zack Wheeler who has done amazing things in this game already to to have that communication and I think it also helps him because you know he and Ranger are very similar pitchers and I love the fact now that they’re split up cuz it was wheeler Nola Ranger Christopher and you know when when you’re a hitter a right-handed hitter left-hand hitter whatever and you see ranger one game and then the next game you see chrisopher who they’re very similar stuff- wise um you know I I think that that was not and look they both pitch great don’t get me wrong but you know as as a hitter I think I would be okay I I see what Ranger threw now I know what Christopher Sanchez is going to give me but now that they’re split up and they can actually like watch and enjoy each other pitch it’s something to watch I it like you know we we talked about the offense maybe taking taking some lumps because Bryce uh and Kyle are out and JT’s still out but hey the pitching can carry him and right now you know after one day of of those guys on the on the injured list Christopher Sanchez said I’ll handle this boys yeah he sure did one and0 in that situation one and0 to start the second half of the season and John when he signed his contract extension one week ago tomorrow he mentioned as you just did Zack Wheeler and the privilege of being around him for four more years and when you look at this rotation all of a sudden it seems as he as if has elevated himself to that stature and you’re looking at Wheeler you’re looking at Ranger you’re looking at Sanchez they’re one two and three uh in ER in the National League then you’re looking at Aaron Nola he can’t pitch that’s four I mean it’s it’s really incredible isn’t it well I think the most amazing thing is like you can look at pretty much every team and say okay you know just look at their numbers and say okay he’s their number one he’s their number two he’s probably their number three he’s probably their number four we ain’t got that we got four number ones really and and and to me uh you know you go into a series and you say you know like like you know okay we’re going to get their number one but then we’re getting their number five or we’re getting their number four number five and number one so you’re thinking yourself all right we got we got two games at least where you know we should do some damage and then try to work our way through the number one guy Phillies they teams that play the Phillies don’t have that luxury because they got four dang number ones and they are pitching their asses off Johnny look at Bryson St tonight no hits but he had both the teams RBI you’ve seen some things out of him that made makes you believe that he’s starting to turn the corner a little bit yeah I like the fact that uh the sacrific fly had in uh I guess it was the eighth inning um you know he he had two strikes uh he fouled some balls off but you know I I say this it’s it’s easier for a left-hand hitter to hit a Fly ball to left field then it is a Fly ball to right field even if you’re a pull hitter because if you’re staying on the ball trying to hit it the other way you know you have a better chance at hitting it in the air that way if you try to pull it you can roll over be a little quick with your top hand and you hit a grounder Bryson just went that way Ben I think it’s going to help him if he continues to bat lead off I I just think Bryson’s one of those guys that uh you know I think it’ll get him going because the more important spot you put him in and now knowing that you know we don’t have uh Kyle we don’t have Bryce we don’t have JT these guys have to pick it up and Bryson’s a guy that I think has that ability to pick it up from the leadoff spot and and and do some great things to score some runs and then drivein runs uh after roas unbelievable I bat by Roos and Incredible God those leg how how would we have done if we could run like that oh my my goodness I may hit 250 we’d have pulled we’d have pulled something hard I know that how about this last question does the name Curtis mean mean Curtis me mean anything to you John it didn’t to me yeah nope guess what Curtis me traded by Matt clench November of 2019 to the Tampa Bay Rays for Christopher Sanchez got to give credit where credit is due i’ say we got the best of that deal I’d say so ctis how about this though the Miami Marlins now are 4 and 26 against left-handed starters this year wow so I guess Rangers going that is hard to do yeah it is I think if I’m I think if I’m Ranger I’m say Hey you know let’s skip no and I’ll go out there yeah I’ll throw righty all right buddy go beat that fireworks traffic Johnny you got it thanks John John KR will check you tomorrow joining us from the booth calling tonight’s game with Tom McCarthy this was a fun one tonight because we were on eggshells not knowing sure you knew that Christopher Sanchez was going to come to pitch the lineup’s a different story because of the injuries remember JT real Muto still out then you add Bryce Harper and Kyle schwarber to that and you are decimated really in your lineup Department it was a funky looking lineup with thought leading off but not too bad but the story really is Christopher Sanchez nine shutout Innings and I’m sure if you ask gar stubs a pleasure to catch it tonight nine innings pitch complete game shut out three hits allowed not an earned run to be found not a run to be found nine strikeouts no walks how about the no walks to First career complete game shut out for Christopher Sanchez and we update the national league erra leaders and they’re all with a Phillies P by their names Rangers Suarez at 1.83 by the way remember that play with Trey Turner the middle game of the Detroit series on Tuesday which cost Ranger Suarez a couple of runs it was an error that at the time was not recorded against Turner they changed that and and so his ER dips below two once again Christopher Sanchez a lofty 2.41 Ben with Zack Wheeler at 273 and Gavin Stone Chris Sale and sunny gray that that’s that’s virtually unheard of to have one two three like that and I know I’m getting ahead of myself but when you think of three names like that that’s glav and smaltz and uh madx yeah that’s unbelievable it it is it is fun to watch and obviously you go into a series I remember when I was with Seattle you know playing the the you know the A’s all the time and if you got Moulder zitto and Hudson on a Friday Saturday Sunday you’re like man if I could just eek out maybe two hits out of this series I I think I’d be happy with that and that’s the way I look at this this three-headed monster if you will with those guys with the ER leaders obviously Aon Nola too uh it should be in there too with how good of stuff he has and how uh you know every fifth day they can rely on him but this is It’s just they just fill up the strike zone strike one all day long that’s what these guys are able to do they’re immediately putting the hitter on the defensive and from an offensive standpoint it’s frustrating knowing you’re going to go up there and it’s not like they’re just grooving a strike I mean they’re hitting Corners they’re hitting a Nat but from 60 feet 6 Ines away and that is something that uh I think they really do feed off each other and they they they talk to each other all the time they go watch each other’s bullpens and when you when you’re watching a bullpen you under understand what makes other guys click and you can incorporate that into your game that’s certain going make you a lot better especially when you have that kind of arms that the Phillies have he’s starting to realize that hey I don’t have to miss bats to get outs and I think that’s what it really this whole pitching staff as a unit really has figured out as good as he was prior to the contract extension do you think in his own mind that validated him and was freeing in no small way and really let him fling it even more I think so I think this is a contract again I talked about it in the pregame show you can go one or two ways after signing the contract you can say oh I have to show everybody just how great I am you start to grip that ball a little tighter and then you start to get hit around or you can say okay all that hard work has paid off I’m financially set for the rest of my life I know I’m going to be in Philadelphia maybe I can go buy a house here now and and not have to worry about all that the minor things and just worry about pitching and that’s what he has done in the last two outings obviously 16 Innings of scoreless baseball I think that’s that he’s taken the lad route and just say you know what I am I am financially secure I can just go out and pitch and and I know that I’m going to be okay and I think he’s he’s taken that used it to his advantage and and that doesn’t mean he’s everyone always talks about in that clubhous about how hard Christopher Sanchez Works he’s not going to slack off in that regard but you know it putting your mind at ease a little bit more makes it that much more tolerable to his manager right now in the clubhouse Rob Thompson on this win is there any debate in your mind about sending him back out there for the ninth uh yeah we were thinking about it you know he’s never pitched in the ninth inning before so once we added the extra run then it was kind of a no-brainer for me had to give him the opportunity pitch count was in real good shape so what was it like watching him tonight you know I’m I’m so proud of this kid because he’s come so far and now he’s a dominant pitcher really in in Major League Baseball and when you saw him a couple years ago you wouldn’t I didn’t think he’d he’d be able to do it but he’s worked hard he’s he’s trusted his coaches in the my leagues and and his coaches here and uh he’s it’s phenomenal really is all these things you’re saying are about a guy who on paper was your number four starter coming to the what does that say about your rotation as a whole right now well obviously it’s really strong I mean they’re putting up huge numbers but uh yeah he he’d be a a one on a lot of teams on on a day where you get some rough injury news just how key is it that he goes out there and throws does what he does tonight yeah um 22 of 29 first pitch strikes 11 ground ball outs nine punch outs nine innings saves a bullpen for another day um played really good defense and that’s what we’re going to have to do maybe on certain nights now for a while and we P push across two runs Roos with a big hustle double good dirt ball read sack fly so you got to sometimes we I think uh for the near future anyway we may have to create some stuff you see him as a r new confidence in roas taking some chances there using his speed I think so yeah and I you know I told him when he came in I said just play like you did in Triple A that’s it you know be aggressive but under control you know and he did it is that an example of what you said recently that you’re best version of yourself with him on the team is that eigh inning when he scored that yeah if he can I mean he’s not going to do that every night but there are times when he can move a runner by Bunning um steal a base steal Third Base get an infield hit and create stuff that that’s all we need what do you see as the biggest area of growth for Sanchez over the past few years uh command of the baseball really and and the development of the change up I mean there’s there’s so many things with him really and you know mentally and emotionally he has has grown up before our eyes and uh he’s just really really I’m really proud of him I really am I can’t remember any other ball being hit hard yeah it amazing mhm it’s just amazing I mean it it it it is very frustrating as a hitter say you recognize a certain pitch and you see that pitch coming in and you’re thinking to yourself I’m on it I’m on this pitch and then you go and then all a sudden it just moves a little bit and you’re like oh and then you’re rolling the ball over and you know running down the first base and making a right turn it’s very frustrating that to have that happen and that’s what happened over and over and over tonight you know what I would just like to have that opportunity one time to go ow so did moon like gra yeah so did Moonlight graah he did got to be getting home uh all right let’s hear from Christopher Sanchez one more time with translator Diego danello you seemed very emotional tonight at times when the endings were ended was there any added emotion tonight was you so fired up no I just uh played against some uh players from the Dominican and we always that we playing together it’s we’re just having laughs and having fun on the field why were you able to be so efficient tonight go out and compete and attacking the hitter early I think those were the keys to today’s success what it feel like to get the last finish off shut it was incredible it’s uh this is my first complete game as well and uh it’s an incredible feeling it’s amazing I thank stubby as well for his work behind the plate and not only that his defense as well and uh we’re a team you had a string of really strong outings lately um particularly after signing the extension do you think that that has rejuvenated you at all or something no I just go out uh and give the best of myself uh always focused and uh just go out and do the work as always as as always what did Tom say to you before he just huged me and uh congratulated me for the outing a lot of people are amazed at your transformation what do you think of it that nothing’s impossible if you want to do something you can do it uh just you just have to focus and work really hard toward did you keep the ball you do with course I did huh what are you going to do keep it how did it feel on a day where the team got some rough injury news to come out and do what you did tonight I’ve always said that we’re a great team but uh it’s not a surprise that th those two players going into the inured list are too sensitive uh you know too sensitive players for us but uh you try to fill in as much as you can but though these guys they’re just Irreplaceable you start to think about maybe getting picked for the All-Star Game I haven’t thought about it yet but uh that’s definitely a goal for me this year thought about renegotiating your [Laughter] contract thank you guys at the end he was asked you’re thinking of renegotiating your contract and Diego donello is translated passed it along he broke out into a big smile and a giggle and uh if if I’m Dave dumbrowski and Sam fold I’m thinking about it maybe you might want to re-extend him one more time what the heck it might mean a sigh up that’s that’s right

  1. Sono grato per l'opportunità di interagire con un gruppo di individui così diversificato e intellettualmente stimolante.🔥

  2. Offense it's putrid even with guys out they still csnt score against marlins. Phillies play Braves Cubs Dodgers before break. This could get ugly if the offense is just nothing

  3. What I don't get is Rojas, Clemens, Marchan, Dahl and Pache hit well at Lehigh but struggle with the parent club. Luis Cardenas has 18 homers and .283 ba. Buddy Kennedy is doing well also.

  4. The pitchers are going to have to throw a shutout every night with this offense. 3 of our top 4 hitters are out.

  5. Rob thrives here because he doesn't seek the spotlight. His demeanor reveals a passively intensity, and it works perfectly for our players and fanbase.

  6. I want to thank John Kruk for saying he is proud of Christopher, I'm sure Chris would had also thanked him as well if the terrible interpreter would had done his job and translated corrected, which he never does.. Gracias

  7. There can be only 1NL Cy Young Yet the Phillies have 3 , , or 4? , Sanchez 2.41 era , 2nd NL 6th MLB ,, 7.9 K / 9. Ranger #1 MLB 2.03 Era , , I d9nt think Ks will have as much bearing this yr as they seem to be down, ultimately ERa, WhIp , Ks ,

  8. Sanchez is one of the great stories in baseball, not just a Philly story. I love the use of the word “proud” to describe these Phillies greats’ feelings about Sanchez. And the Phillies dud right by signing him to an extension.

  9. Matt Klentak traded a nobody for Sanchez in 2019.. Klentak is similar to Ed Wade where their current teams didn't succeed, but the moves they made paid off years later…Howard, Utley, Rollins, and Hamels for Wade….JT Realmuto, Sanchez, Stott, Ranger Suarez for Klentak……gotta give credit where it's due….Harper was a Middleton move and Klentak only drew up paperwork for that one..
