Former Coach Jay Wright Calls The Villanova Knicks “A Blessing” I CBS Sports

welcome back to CBS Sports HQ the Nova Knicks what was three now four villain Nova and New York City combining to put together one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference and there you go from college to the pros reunited and ready to rock to try to challenge the Champs out in [Music] Boston our draft coverage continues here on CBS Sports HQ we have Jay Wright joining us or good colleague at CBS Sports also michaa o Donnell and Tim Doyle I’m Tommy Tran Jay we’re at the NBA draft and what Memories do you have because you got a lot of your guys out in the association right now yeah you know what it’s a it’s a fun night it’s fun when you’re there I I definitely remember the night being with Mel Bridges there when the 76ers drafted him and his mom was with us and his mom was working for the Sixers and we were hugging and so happy he was going to be in Philadelphia and then he went he went backstage and we knew that got traded and he didn’t know that he got traded and we he didn’t have his phone he left his phone at the table we were trying to get in touch with him that was a wild night well now he goes to New York where all of your old players are right now coach honestly are you surprised at how this is shaking out for so many of your old old guys I I am Tim I you know this isn’t anything that I have to do with or or any stop it take credit for it yes you have You’re the Reason for it coach I mean no one asked me my opinion on any of these moves and I talk to these guys they don’t tell me they don’t tell me this is going on I I just did uh Josh and jaylen’s podcast they didn’t tell me I talked to Mel he’s down at the Jersey Shore with us he didn’t tell me so I don’t know how this stuff goes down but I I did tell them all like this is this is such a blessing just all all you guys imagine playing with your college teammates in the NBA on a really good team that has a chance to compete you know for a championship that that that never happens for anybody I I I’ve never the only team I’ve ever heard of this they said the Kentucky uh rups players from Kentucky played in Indiana one time but it’s amazing they’re so lucky coach right uh Tim Doyle’s not going to like this but I’m goingon to I’m going to ask a couple geek out questions from a basketball perspective for you okay so Tyler KCK gets drafted goes to the goes to the Knicks he’s going to compete for the backup spot you know to jayen Brunson uh number one how do you like that fit and number two how would you explain like why from a pace perspective Tyler Kik is gonna could have a successful NBA career I love Tyler kic we we really struggled we really struggled playing against him he he actually has a lot of of jaylen’s um game to him in in that um he plays with a physicality that that is not uh really really observed by a lot of people uh he can slow down and put his shoulder into you he’s got a strong lower body he’s become a very good shooter um he sees the floor extremely well um and he’s and he’s better defensively a lot of times in college if you’re the best player you’re out there this wasn’t Tim Doyle’s case he he just didn’t play defense on his own but when you’re the best player you’re being told don’t foul out he’s a better defensive player than people think um I agree with you I I think that this is actually a better fit for kic than it is for the Knicks like he’s going to benefit so much from playing alongside Jaylen Bronson and that’s when he got selected we were kind of talking about that all on set you know it’s amazing to watch the do this with all the Villanova players I have an idea that I think for organizations the next school that they should look at is Yukon and because Danny Hurley’s dad is arguably the greatest high school basketball coach of all time he just stole his ideas and just took him to another level okay he goes up to Yukon and now they’re going to compete to win three straight championships Donovan kingan Stefan Castle cam Spencer I sat next to Coach Wright and we watched the final four together what do you think about those guys at the next level coach you know what it’s it’s a good point Tim they they all play very similar to to our guys on the Knicks they all play the game to win which sounds simple but it’s not anymore um there there’s a lot of guys that play the game to get um to get their position on the team to get their next contract to make it to the NBA those guys really play the game to win which is an intelligent defensive minded they rebound they do the little things um and and they also have a work ethic and a humility that they want to continue to improve I I I do think if you put those guys together obviously they’ve won Championship you put them together as they grow in the NBA and and they learn the league they’re going to be really effective players coach you got one more before we let you go we’ve got a two-day draft event now with bronny James we’re watching where he’s going to go but in terms of your guys again the the Nova cats Jaylen Brunson was a second round pick and now he’s in the conversation for MVP have you enjoyed his journey and what stood out to you about 2018 to what he’s accomplishing right now in the association I I have enjoyed the journey you know we we used to always talk to our guys about the draft especially the first round is about the future you know NBA and and rightfully so the NBA guys are trying to get someone that could eventually blow up into an Allstar you know or or become uh a top scorer on their team they’re they’re kind of taking some chances Jaylen when he was drafted he was what he was you he was the national player of the year he was the best college basketball player in the country but I don’t think people anticipated that he would continue to work to get better when he got to the NBA he’s added so much to his game just since College you know as as we all know to score in the playoffs like he did when your opponent night in and night out their game plan is set to make other people score and you still find a way to score in the 30s and the 40s is really impressive and I think he’s really improved his competitiveness on every single offensive situation to never miss an opportunity to score you know we’ve talked a lot about hair in this draft okay and I remember when coach R had the slick back Pat Riley used to be jet black and he would take I don’t know how much was that gel or moose you were putting in there back in the day coach straight gel back in the day ttim oh that thing was whipped over that was a big transition to when he went from the whip back over to the side part I remember when you’re the best hair in the Big 10 you follow a journey like that it’s been awesome following the Journey of your players coach thanks Timmy Jay certainly appreciate the time thanks for hopping on a few minutes with us here on CBS Sports HQ
