REPORTS: Jayson Tatum signs 5-year $314M SUPERMAX extension | CBS Sports

[Music] breaking news in the NBA Jason Tatum getting the largest deal in NBA history Celtics working on a 5year $314 million supermax extension for Tatum who just wrapped up his seventh season in Boston with an NBA championship Tatum put up 27 points eight boards five dimes as the Celtics won their 18th title in franchise history and it has been kind of a crazy day for Celtic fans well they get Tatum they also Derek white for four more years this morning and then the owner announced he’s putting the team up for sale in the afternoon but locking up Jason Tatum to the largest deal in league history the headline right now and you see the richest contract all time in each sport yeah there you go I mean it’s good to be showy Otani 700 million a lot of that deferred Patrick Mahomes quarterback you know you’re getting that money and that Cap’s only going up up up and up and some guy named Messi does pretty well kicking the old soccer ball speaking of guys doing pretty well let’s bring them in Avery Johnson world champion also Coach of the Year Sam Quinn read of stuff on cbssports.com get it going Sam I’m going to start with you this is not a surprise right I mean this seems like you know like two people been dating for a while and you find out they got engaged you just call them up and say congratulations but you’re not surprised is that fair yeah this was a certainty the moment he became eligible by making all NBA teams I mean look this is maybe a top five player in the league maybe a top 10 player in the league right in the prime of his career playing for the defending champions in a market that can support you know a big exorbitant luxury tax payment this was about as much of a no-brainer as any contract you’re going to see in the NBA they’re going to enter next season as the Championship favorites they’ll presumably be in the mix for the next several years they just resigned Derek white as well the entire core the entire starting lineup now locked up for at least 2 years in most cases more than that this was a no- break They just won the title they might win another who knows this might be the beginning of a real run I hate to use the dword but like if there’s a team that’s equipped to win a dynasty it’s the one that has Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown and their whole starting lineup under contract for several more years so yeah you’re right total no-brainer here I’m going to get back to you on that last point but first let me get Avery in here Avery Jason Tatum is a perplexing guy in some regard I see people who put him in the top five I see people say he’s outside the top 10 which is kind of strange who is Jason Tatum and what can he be well Jason Tatum is a superstar he’s a ride obviously he wasn’t the finals MVP could have very well been the finals MVP and that’s nothing to take away from jayen brown but this guy man he he’s uh he’s been amazing this year you know 231 performances in the finals 236 point performan is in easn Conference Finals uh he plays the right way he’s very versatile uh you can play him across across the board you know he’s you know one two three four he can do it all he can pass dribbl and shoot he makes big shots um he this guy was embarking on almost a triple d double to close out uh the series The the finals but he he’s a guy he’s a good teammate uh Joe Missoula his coach talked about how coachable he is how responsible he is in terms of taking on the pressure so did Jason Tatum is a superstar I believe that he is a uh he’s a top five talent and um this is an opportunity for him to continue to s in his legacy and have and try to run off you know a couple of championships in a row because they’re set up for the next two or three years you know it’s funny I feel like I’m kind of in the middle I argue with everybody anybody puts him in the top five I argue puts them outside the top 10 I argue with them I have them right there somewhere between six and nine personally but let me follow up with Avery and then I’ll go back to Sam um Avery one of the questions in Boston is who’s team is this they have Jaylen Brown they have Jason Tatum does that matter so tell me whose team this is and then tell me if that even matters EK that’s a great question I really don’t think that it matters is jayen brown and Jason Tatum’s team and they’ve done a really nice job some nights you know Brown is one a Tatum is 1B some nights Tatum is one b and brown 1 a Brown’s one b or or however you put it some nights Tatum is Michael and and Tatum Brown is Scotty so and and vice versa so these guys really have learned to play off of each other there was some talk about them not being able to play together for long periods of time and that you need to break this this uh Duo up you don’t need to break them up this franchise is set up for the next you know five to 10 years with these guys being 27 and 28 years old and I think it’s both of the I think it’s both Brown and Tatum’s team and everybody else follows and then when you got a third wheel like a Drew holiday and Derek white the fourth wheel man this team is ready to go if they can stay healthy rest of the league better watch out Sam you mentioned the dword dynasty but six straight years we’ve had six different Champions it’s been hard to repeat lately in this league the first thing for the Celtics was get your guys all signed up Dereck white has resigned Jason Tatum has resigned what’s the biggest impediment for the Celtics to be able to break this streak what would go wrong for we us to have seven and seven in your opinion well we saw it during the playoffs right Chris porzingis has had injury issues throughout his entire entire career they were largely able to keep him healthy during the regular season you know they s him out a lot of backto backs but they play Miami in the first round porzingis gets hurt and suddenly the team that was Unstoppable all year yeah they did Rampage through the Eastern Conference but it was against teams that were weaker against teams that had injured players if you run into a deeper conference this year with the Knicks now going all in with the 76ers going all in we’ll see if the Bucks can make a big move then it’s going to get a little bit harder if you can’t get CP christh porzingis on the floor for the entire playoff run now we know right now he’s expected to miss the beginning of next year I would imagine the Celtics are going to be as cautious as possible when it comes to bringing him back I don’t think they’re thinking we need to win 64 games again next year I think they’re thinking we’ve proven it we’ve proven we can win the championship so let’s just get our guys at both strength into the playoffs if we have to win games in New York or in Philly so be it health is the big concern and I have for them but if you look at the roster if you look at the starting lineup top to bottom it’s about as balanced with shooting and defense as any team we’ve seen in recent NBA history if they have all of their guys I would pick them as the champion for next year Avery you’ve been a champion as a player you’ve been the coach of the year in the NBA as a coach it’s day one at training camp you’re coaching the Celtics you blow the whistle and you say hey Jason come on over and sit next to me right here he sits next to you you look him in the eye and you say what what’s the message to him continue to lead by example Le by example make sure every practice every film session that you’re locked in there are no sh Cuts make sure that you’re you’re another coach on the floor you’ve won a championship or you going to be satisfied with your new extension in winning one ring do you want to win multiple championships if you do you got to be willing to put in the work when nobody’s looking in practice taking care of your body in the film room making sure that you are a captain and leading the rest of the players in the right way and making your teammates better you got to make them better because you’re going to draw double and triple teams so make them better by making the right play there you go well said excellent job gentlemen appreciate your thoughts on this uh really this record setting day in Boston where Jason Tatum signs the largest super max in history so here’s your NBA free agent tracker Paul George Tyrese Maxi say Hello Joel embiid Philly Brotherly Love James Harden stays put Chris Paul is now with Victor wanyama and Company and Jason Tatum stays put in Boston and they also signed Derek white today as well

  1. Cause they can assist in rigging games.! Legalized sports betting means more money! How to fix games besides the refs. Star players throw games or go beast mode when told

  2. "Hard to repeat"… why? There's never in history has there been this level of competition, not just in the NBA, the world.. count the number of teams worldwide with 1 if not more(Canada) with superstar players on their teams, not to mention 2nd generation players currently in the NBA- basically professionally coached since child hood.. there's never been a better time in the NBA honestly, better players.. ever- im just waiting on somebody to pick up Taco Fall to deal with wemby..😂😂

  3. listen im not saying Sam lives in his mother's basement and drinks nothing but mountain dew and eats doritos all day while playing Worlds of Warcraft…..but he certainly has the appearance down pact lol

  4. Le sentiment de camaraderie entre les participants est palpable. C'est comme faire partie d'une communauté soudée, liée par des intérêts communs.💝

  5. JT getting that superstar bag. Love to see it. If we can follow up Kristaps contract with another 2 years…. I'm loving that everyone is around for 2 years, but 4 more years of everyone would be a dream come true as long as health goes our way

  6. Most overpaid player in NBA history a 2nd option with the highest contract LOL if celtics dont repeat they are screwed

  7. Man crazy money, is this coming from China's support of the NBA? How did these guys go from a little over 20 million in 2010 to $60 million a year? What do these guys do with all that money? I hope they enjoy it and are able to give in good ways to others.

  8. If you do not know who he is, you “shut up” Never call Lionel Messi “some guy”…are you kidding me?

  9. Lmao hard to repeat?.. or hard to stop?. Boys already know how to win a championship and what it feels like… Goodluck stopping them
