Jeff & Stacey Sheppard | Houston Rockets Rookie Introductory Press Conference | NBA Offseason

is anything about um Reed that you’d like for us to know I mean we know about the basketball what what what’s something you think we don’t know that we should know Reed’s a very relational guy he loves um the relationships of his teammates his coaches and he’ll he’ll be engulfed in the community and just being a part of it and um he he loves family so it’s like that Houston will now be his family so he will be reaching out and hopefully Houston will reach out to him and and make him feel welcome and he will let them know that he’s very appreciative of being a Houston Rocket so I know this was the draft was on your birthday right you said it the birthday present that keeps giving um what are you most excited about for him in this opportunity well just the opportunity in itself um you know like like one of the questions that he was asked you know what his expectations were the same as that he went into Kentucky with he didn’t have any expectations um we never thought he would be here this fast and he had an incredible year but I I think that goes back to him just being focused on what he wanted to achieve every single day and like he said going in and working doing whatever was asked for him and you know when you do that things things play out well for you and for your team so you know I think he’s just going to enjoy being here and enjoy the atmosphere and the teammates and the coaches and make the best of it how much do you know about the rockets and what are you your thoughts about the team and the organization coach or whatever you know well this is all very new so uh I know Charles Barkley played here um and I was looking at these all these banners and I was like yes I remember all those uh but it’s it’s surreal you know to know that our son is is going to be here um and be a part of this historic organization and we’re excited and he’s excited and looking forward to being here thank you what do you know about Houston in general well we played the McDonald’s all game All American game here um we ate at a little restaurant called Franks that was unbelievable I’m not even sure if it’s it’s still over but greatest breakfast place ever um but that’s about it so we’re going to be traveling around in the the next couple days to try to figure out some things and you know what I’ve heard Houston’s a great City so we’re excited why do you think he’s ready for this next step because of of what he’s been through at Kentucky I think this the amount of pressure that has been on him uh in the state of Kentucky since he started Middle School you know everybody would come to the gyms to watch him play they would always have positive negative comments if they didn’t live up to certain expectations so he’s been around that his whole life and then at Kentucky it was just magnified on a great scale um and the way that he handled it and the way the people around him he allowed to speak into him and um just not internalize all the negativity but just to keep fighting and continue to do what he’s known to do his whole life and um you know it I think all that has prepared him for what’s next and you know you can never predict what’s going to happen but mentally emotionally and and physically he’s he’s ready Kentucky basketball has been what it’s been for Generations you’re welcome has it been more so for him as your son as Jeff’s son the microscope that’s on him well the the story of the Kentucky basketball I’m originally from Kentucky so I grew up watching Kentucky basketball from the time I was old enough to know what was going on um and I was always a huge fan and so then I went to Kentucky and I met Jeff there and he played so that was a a kind of a different um behind the scenes thing with Kentucky basketball um and it helps you realize that these guys are just people and then our son is there and then the Kentucky fans are the way that I used to be growing up like Kentucky Kentucky players you know and so you see you see all different sides of of what Kentucky basketball is and what it means to the fans but um you know to watch Reed run out on the r Arena floor for the first time was a very surreal moment um and still it has gone by so fast and it’s like he really played there um but it’s it’s an awesome opportunity to to not only be from Kentucky but to play at Kentucky and then have one of your children to play at Kentucky Buzz nationally about Reed and then and then there’s this doubt of well he can’t keep it up all season and then all of a sudden he has another game another game and strings them together a really good season um and we’re just enjoying every moment of it as parents but here he is again can he make that step when will he make that step um but just in in one dinner last night uh with Coach to be able to to hear his vision for the team the hear from the management For the First Time hear how they uh what they think about Reed just as a dad get you get you real excited of course it’s all new you know Reed hadn’t made his first turnover yet and so uh it’s all new but we’re going to enjoy the new right now uh but we’re just so thankful and uh appreciate uh the support everybody in the organization has just been so kind and uh it’s it really has been fun and uh you hear a dream come true a lot and uh it’s it’s it is that we we pinch ourselves often and uh to see your little boy up there you know suit and tie addressing Houston media is uh is you know I want to cry I’m so thankful do you know anything about Houston have you been here or have you the Houston have you guys been here and you have no was here for the McDonald’s game here for the McDonald’s allamerican game that was the last time he played in the Toyota Center and um so uh but do we have a lot of experience in Houston we do not we do not we’re excited just to be here for a couple of days um but you’re going to see quite a bit of the Shepherds uh especially Stacy uh I’m going to have to uh figure out how to go back and work and support our our new hobby of running around the country uh following Reed we we’ve got to go to every basketball game and uh I don’t that will go to every single NBA basketball game but the effort will be there um and we’ll see how that goes but uh we we are excited and as I mentioned earlier it’s also the heartbeat of our family to serve and to be involved and to give and so we look forward to whatever that means in this community and uh that’s important to us um and so we’ll see we’re in no rush to to do anything but forward to um getting involved as as much as we can uh when it’s appropriate two years ago I two years ago I asked jaar Junior’s Dad yeah the same question I’m about to ask you okay when was the first time he beat you one so uh we we played uh I would say about about 15 years old um but we didn’t play a a ton of just straight up oneon-one um just because I didn’t want to play any defense so we did a lot of shooting games uh we have a a mini full court in our backyard so we play a lot of one-on-one uh shooting games and I was hanging in there for a little while just cuz I could talk to his head I could get into his head but as he developed um over the last several years is especially his his mental strength has become a real attribute of his I’m very thankful for that and so it’s harder for me to get in his head uh he’s getting in my head now and my conditioning is not quite there either so but uh uh he been a beat me for a while is there anybody that you canare him to maybe somebody you played with or played against yeah that’s a good question um you know the the the person that he plays most like is Stacy the the disadvantage that everybody has is you didn’t really get to see Stacy play that much um but you know statistically uh Stacy blocked shots she rebounded at a really high level even though she’s only 57 she shot the basketball really well uh she got her hands on all kinds of balls and that’s what Reed tries to do you know there’s a lot of uh comparisons that you you dream about you know can he be u a leader like Steve Nash one day who knows you know can can he be a player like uh Derek white that is having such a great run as a as a role player that shooting the ball really well but causing some problems on defense and kind of learning from veterans he talked about learning he’s really committed to listening learning improving getting better and so um but at the same time you know what he’s a that’s the neque thing about being a human being right we’re all unique and and we’re all uniquely made and so God made him as Reed and uh so what’s that look like and what’s that mean it’s his job to be the the very best version of of himself um but you know we’ll we’ll see and have a lot of hopefully a lot of opportunities to make some fun comparisons over the years the microscope that he was under back home you you believe that’s helped him after one year to come to the NBA it has it really has and he’s been under that um scrutiny for a while you know uh just being at a local level our son uh kind of kind of throws him into a category where uh every ball game that he plays in as a as a little fella he’s he’s our son and so you know there’s all kinds of comparisons that are always being made and that kind of thing um it came with attention you know we go to the grocery store and you know people would want to take a picture or talk to to me or Stacy when he was a little bitty F and he was like what’s that about dad who that you know and and as he said we we really just kind of downplayed a lot of that and and so he got to um now he’s the guy that you know we go to the grocery store and everybody wants to talk to him um but it has helped it has helped you know what does that mean and how does that translate who knows you know we’re all trying to do an analysis of this and figure it out right now and and it’s a it’s a fun story but no body knows until he gets into the gym he gets with the team he gets uh in that system U gets matched up with teammates and and then we kind of see what happens from there
