recorded last Friday after the uh after the introductory press conference so things are I don’t think we dated anything but just in case they are there is your fair warning it was from Friday before free agency Badness um we did have some pretty big news the magic actually continued their runit back train they reportedly agreed to a two-year $24 million deal uh $22 million deal I keep giving him an extra million because I love mner give him an extra million um they agreed to a two-year $22 million deal with Mo Vagner um and they agreed to a fiveyear 84 million renegotiate and extend with Jonathan Eisen reports are that deal will increase the salary about 26 or $27 million this season and then begin to slowly decrease the salary until it’s down to like 12 or 13 million in 2029 we will talk more about the mechanics and the impact of that signing after the holiday I do want to note it though um like we like we talked about yesterday the magic are continuing the runit back train the Orlando Magic have one roster spot left we are expecting that it will be Joe Eng Les I’ll put an outside chance that it’s Markel fol still um but the magic are essentially bringing back the very same roster they had last year except for adding cavius calwell Pope and adding Tristan to Silva like I said there this Jonathan Isaac thing is a little bit complicated and a little hard to explain it is a very rarely used part of the collective bargain agreement um a very rarely used rule I think I I think it said I think I read there was only five four or five players that have ever been renegotiated and extended in this way and look the magic got a really good deal I think Jonathan Isaac is essentially going to be the team’s Sixth Man next year um they will bring him off the bench he will make a humongous defensive impact I think with a healthy summer we will see an improved offensive game from Jonathan Isaac as well hopefully we will continue to see uh injury restrictions released from him so that he could play more minutes we want to get him up to 20 21 22 minutes perhaps um you know maybe do spot starts when it’s needed um the magic are kind of thin at the four right now um yes they got Pao yes they got France Wendell Carter can play the four a little bit but it’s essentially Off the Bench it’s Jonathan Isaac and Tristan B Silva um the guy we’re going to talk about here in a minute uh so I think Jonathan Isaac is a hugely important player and and I would make this point too uh what you value and who you value is often expressed in where you put your money who you invest in Long term and if you look around the league and and look honestly look at the magic and what they spent and how they spent their summer a lot of two or threeyear deals you know there is reporting suggesting the magic would have made an offer for Malik monk but Malik monk ultimately a chose some place he’s comfortable with I he loves Sacramento I’m not gonna knock him for that um but he ultimately chose a four-year contract that might have been below what he would have gotten on the open market uh instead of getting more money because teams weren’t offering a ton of money Danel Russell I think essentially opted in because the magic a we’re not interested and B we’re not going to give him the kind of contract that he was ultimately looking for to opt out of the $18 million player option that he had I think this is the G General Trend we saw throughout the league in free agency teams were hesitant to give out long-term years they wanted to keep Financial flexibility because that second apron is really scary um the second apron is super duper scary for a lot of teams so the magic are not super worried about it essentially what the renegotiating extend CLA it clause in the CBA is is if you have extra cap room you can use it to take a player entering the last year of their contract give them more money on the front end and extend their contract out and one of the tricks you can do with this kind of the reward one of the rewards for doing this is essentially saying hey we want to bring you back but for less money let’s give you some more money up front and and then we will drop your contract down uh for the for the added years we’re going to put on your we’re going to put on so what the magic and this is apparently done in the NFL a lot as as my NFL cap experts are telling me but um what the magic did here is they’re giving Jonathan Isaac their extra cap room their their empty cap room so they have about $10 million left in cap room I have not done the math to like figure out exactly what order the magic need to sign players Gary Harris they can sign on bird rights Goa baz has early bird rights uh there’s people thinking that the magic might sign Gary Harris using the room exception he’s a he’s a two-year $15 million contract now um the we we’ll figure out the cap mechanics of this cap mechanics are are minutia it’s it’s it’s nothing you really need to worry about um but the magic are taking whatever remaining cap room they have giving it to Jonathan Isaac slashing that salary by 40% next year and then declining his contract by it appears by the full eight% over the course of the next four years or they could do that for the next four years um that is that’s that’s why Jonathan Isaac’s going to be like the most bargain deal in the league the magic are gonna have an all defensive team player when the salary cap continues to rise so it’s gonna be $150 million next year it’s going to be 165 the year after uh let’s see if I could keep doing math 10% raises after that the magri GNA have Jonathan Isaac at like12 million essentially their Sixth Man at that level this like to me honestly when I saw the deal fiveyear $84 million and look he’s got to get paid 25 he’s gonna get paid at least 2627 million this year the rest of that contract is going to be a freaking bargain like it like this is this is good business by the magic they kept a key player put him under cost control for the next four years with injury protections John Hollinger of the athletic reporting that there will be exhib there will be the exhibits for injury protections um so they’re not fully guaranteed years it appears um they they were able to get this done it’s it to me it’s frankly just it’s a it’s awesome like this is this is a good deal you know I know I know there are questions about Jonathan Isaac’s heal there’s always questions about Jonathan is Health but when he played last year he was the most impactful defensive player on the floor and that’s saying something with Jaylen Suggs out there uh I I am still a believer that he can get his offense going and like last year last year just felt like everything the magic were getting from him was a bonus um that they were you know whatever they could get for him was great he were just happy to have you back now we can start seeing him continue to add and improve his skills see him get more minutes build up his stamina again so that he could play meaningful minutes and be again be essentially the team sixth man I I think that’s the role that he’s ultimately gonna play for this team uh this this is a ridiculous home run signing like there’s so there there’s going to be Protections in there for the magic um to get out of it um overall this summer frankly overall this offseason I get the disappointment at the magic didn’t add anyone significant they’re only adding cavius CW pop he makes the team better but maybe not second round for sure better there’s there’s a lot of work to do the magic have to improve internally there’s a lot of faith and trust in Jaylen Suggs Cole Anthony Anthony black to to man that point guard spot but the magic I think maintain a lot of flexibility they have a lot more tradable contracts to help them make that next big move to get over the top to I said a million times this summer was more about setting the table for the next move that would get you over the top because you’re not signing your third star or your your big player to a free agent contract you’re getting them in a trade and as I explained before the draft I did not feel like the magic had contracts they could trade I did not feel like they had players they could afford to give up or players that they could move comfortably now they do they could combine a couple players off their bench into one really good player and still have some depth they could you know trading a wend Carter for another Center would would I still think that’s that’s the only weak spot on the roster but the magic I think are in a much better position to move nimbly for whichever star becomes free whichever star they’re interested next that becomes free I don’t think they’re ready to make that move now um I don’t think they’re ready to kind of push those chips in for de Jon Murray for instance but I really look at the Magic’s books now and and again it’s all speculative because we don’t know what those final contract numbers are going to be uh but I I’m really imp I I’m I I will say I I do think the magic did a good job setting the table again does that mean they’re going to have a better 2025 than 2024 they’re gonna be about the same um like to be honest they’re gonna be about the same they’ll probably be fighting a little bit for home court advantage they’ll be playing to that last day it’s going to come down to a game here or there wouldn’t surpris me if they take a little bit of a step back record-wise but wouldn’t surpris me if they take a step forward record wise I think they’ll be about in the same group that kind of B tier of the Eastern Conference hopefully fighting for home Advantage might lose a game on a random Tuesday that falls that pushes them to the succeed maybe to the play in tournament they have to play their way in they’ll be a tough out they’ll be one of the best defensive teams in the league again the offense will probably have its moment moments but mostly struggle still unless some players take some major leaps fron Vagner with his three-point shooting especially um but I do think the magic are ultimately a better team on paper um even if the results won’t show that and I think they’re in a better position to make the leap talent-wise that they’ll have to make that they couldn’t make with this free agent class this wasn’t a good free agent class like I’ve had some people say like $50 million in cap room and all you could get with was cavius cwell Pope I was like kavus cwell Pope was probably like the third or fourth best free agent on the market like they didn’t do a bad job there and they they didn’t like overpay for him they didn’t throw $30 million At His Feet they got him at a at a relatively good price the structure of the contract appears to be uh really well done as well for them um you know we’ll we’ll see now you know now that all the signings are in place they know what they know the cap room that they have to sign with cavius cwell Pope they’ll probably manipulate that figure to get to something that they like so we’ll we’ll see what the ultimate structure is but you know magic I think did some pretty good work not exciting this team isn’t exciting but I I think they’re setting themselves up for the next move and we’ll see what happens after that one of those new players though is someone that we will get to meet now we’ll talk to lock on Buffs about Tristan D Silva we’re going to get to that coming up here in just just a moment but first it’s time mind doing that uh we’re joined today by lock on Buffs Kevin borba to learn a little bit more about Tristan D Silva Uh Kevin how how you doing right today I’m doing good appreciate you having me on I’m ready to talk NBA draft it’s a very exciting two-day spectacle now which is interesting but it was a spectacle nonetheless and a three-player draft for for Colorado which is you know I’d imagine a fairly rare sight uh for for that program although fres yeah yeah I I don’t mean to throw shade on Colorado because you know Jamal Mosley will yell at me if I if I throw too much shade at Colorado he he’s a very very very proud Buffalo um but but Kevin uh the Orlando Magic obviously made Tristan to Silva the 18th pick in the NBA draft a player that by Orlando’s estimation just checked every box that they had I know we were talking as we were setting this interview up and I said Tristan noovo was probably number one on my board of guys that I thought that would be available in the Magic’s range just he checks off so many Bo so many boxes for what this team uh has what stands out to you about the way Tristan D Silva plays uh from his time at Colorado yeah I think at Colorado which the college game to the NBA game is always different but I think at Colorado he had that ability to sort of be the guy and I think for some guys when they go from college to NBA there’s like this adjustment where it’s like oh I’m not going to get 15 shots anymore like I’m the offense isn’t going to run through me but Tristan is like the perfect plug-and-play guy and I think every NBA team wants that guy that could come in shoot he could defend which at the NBA level is kind of a the biggest issue for rookies I would imagine for the most part is like they’re not always ready for all the coverages that the NBA runs like it’s not just like Hey we’re going to run up straight manto man and hope for the best like they do in college where in the NBA there’s more technique to it there’s more um Ambiance and other factors to it so Tristan I think is and which he’s 23 years old he has I believe it’s like 130 games under his belt 124 college games so he comes in with experience he comes in just ready for the league and I think for a team like the magic that’s everything they could have wanted yeah it it it certainly feels that way I think a lot of people kind of use the age against a lot of players um which you know after watching Jame hakz and what he did with Miami and like even like Malcolm Brogden way back you know a few years back like seniors are able to contribute it’s not like they everyone stops developing or stops having potential as a freshman but you know if you are going to stay in school how you progress I think really matters so how did D Silva grow yeah from year to year but really more from this junior to his senior year he mentioned it during his introductory press conference that he tested the waters as junior year got some feedback and then came back to Colorado like ready to go all in to do what he needed to do to get to the NBA where did he grow the most uh through his time in college especially between his Junior and Senior year yeah I think you have to look at his shooting um he’s always been a high effort guy he’s always been someone who will is willing to do everything for the team but if you look at his shooting numbers from even you can go back to his freshman year um he wasn’t really attempting the three he didn’t average one attempt um his freshman or sophomore year really ramped it up um or he averaged two excuse me as or sophomore year but this past year he was averaging about five against game and shot it at a 39% clip um which is a pretty impressive jump um for someone who didn’t always have that as a part of his game and so he really became a threat uh because in the NBA they like to run a lot five out they like to spread the floor and space the floor you want to give room for Paulo to to work in the the mid-range as he does at times and so Tristan’s that guy that you could plop in the corner and he’ll hit a corner three for you he’s a guy that you could just have running off a screens and ready to catch the ball and shoot and he’s he’s going to be able to sort of help the offense in a way where he doesn’t disrupt it by them having to force him touches because he’s going to be able to sort of stay within his game and still contribute to the offense which as a rookie is hard to do because a lot of these guys have that sort of adjustment of figuring out what their role is and I don’t think there’s going to be a sense of adjustment for him in that sense so I would say his shooting is the biggest thing that stands out to me the most um just because he became more efficient as the years went on which I think is kind of kind of rare yeah especially as your volume increases I mean I think most of us when we think of college players who stay four years they’re the the guys that come in maybe a little bit raw they they they have to scratch their way into the rotation and then as they get older they get the coach’s trust obviously a little bit more they become the stars and the starter the starters for this team and you know I I you know people here in Florida and or in Orlando may remember that in Tournament game that’s when D Sila really popped off to me I was like I knew that like Cody Williams and Cody Williams great talent don’t get me wrong I knew Cody Williams was the kind of lottery pick on the team but I remember watching that that game against Florida and it was overtime game very a lot of offense in that game yeah um which is how Florida plays that’s more of a Florida thing than a Colorado thing maybe but um uh I remember watching that game and thinking like this D Silva kid is really good like he’s he’s just he’s just always in the right spots and that’s been kind of the feedback the magic have have given us is like this is a guy that just knows when to make the right cut knows when to make the right pass know just kind of knows how to like be in the right spots to impact the game and it’s not always something that shows up in the Box Score but I want to I want to ask ask you this how does how does that kind of manifest itself in in his game like like what I guess what’s kind of the ways that that he stands out by not standing out yeah no is that something you notice about him too I totally get that because you think of the Florida game specifically like everyone’s watching Co um Cody because he’s the five star freshman lottery pick at times he was mocked as the number one pick in the draft like this draft class was obviously horrendously weird um but then you have KJ Simpson out there who’s hitting the buzzer beater gamewinner making big shots but then you look and it’s like you look at the box score which I I don’t want to like just base everything off the box score but Tristan has 17 points um he had four four rebounds and five assists and he’s making all of these plays and he’s probably the third maybe fourth most talked guy about on the team because they had Eddie lampin too who was a a very like Eddie lamin was never the best player but he’s a fan favorite um I don’t know if you remember has run um with this prior School TCU like everyone loved Eddie but it’s like Tristan’s out here doing a little bit of everything showcasing hey I could initiate the offense I can shoot the three if you need me to out here in the corner I could play defense um I don’t think I I feel like a lot of the evaluations I see of him they don’t think he or they would say he’s not athletic uh I would just say he’s not a freak athlete which is I mean not many of us are you know not all of us are what Russell Westbrook John Morant there’s there’s very few of those guys but he just does a little bit of everything to where it’s like you almost expect it it’s like you you are more surprised or not surprised that’s a bad word but you’re more excited to talk about like KJ Simpson hitting a deep three but you know Tristan’s gonna have his 15 and five or whatever it is like you know he has that in him he’s consistent and I think consistency is key and consist consistency is what keep you in the league yeah and and I think I think that’s that often gets over look like especially when you’re drafting 18th like when you’re drafting 18th you’re not expecting to get a superstar player you’re looking for someone that can come in comfortably play a role and and and contribute to your team and it feels like when you whenever you hear anyone talk about D Sila like you you talked about it you you can go listen to same Vini of the athletic who really loves him like all the draft analysts seem to say like this is just he does this guy doesn’t necessarily pop out when you watch the tape or watch the individual but when you really focus on him you see the little things that he does and you know I I don’t know if you know maybe this something you could you could speak on you know when I asked him about like where does his basketball IQ come from during Friday’s press conference you know he said like that’s just kind of how I’ve always been you know like it’s it’s little things that I notice or little things that that I’ve kind of learned how to do and ingrained into my game that just make everyone else’s life easier and and that’s you know again 18th pick you’re not expecting a super a superstar but 18th pick that that’s what you’re looking for someone who’s thinking about how can I make my team better yeah I think it it’s a good way that he put it that like that’s just how he views his game because if you look at how Colorado progressed as a program and him as an individual I think things started clicking when guys just started realizing how to play together which sounds really like not profound but like Tristan figured out that his his Niche or his like role was to do everything and sort of be the best player but not get like best player attention like he never got best player attention like if for those who follow Colorado basketball those are the people that know he’s probably the best best player but it was like Cody Williams five star everyone’s pumped about him um KJ Simpson’s hitting deep shots he’s hitting uh these crazy contested layups but Tristan he does what the team needs and I think that really helps and I think he sees the game differently because of his experience I think that’s really undervalued these days in the NBA draft and in college in general is the more you play basketball which this is going to shock a lot of people the more you the more things you see the more things you are prepared for and for someone like Tristan who I think he is just a thoughtful person in the sense of how he approaches his game and so like he sees the coverages he get or gets from other teams he sees the looks he gets on offense and he just figures out where his opportunities are and I think that really help will help him translate to the NBA and I think that’s kind of what has helped him advance and I also think we see like his numbers tick up he got used more and he was more efficient so obviously he prepared for that moment and I think that’s kind of a a big um a b something that deserves credit for him because realistically a lot of guys when they see their usage go up we see their numbers drop down a little bit because it’s like okay and then they that’s kind of used as an excuse for them it’s like well their usage did go up so we got to give them that Tristan had his usage go up and his numbers improved like that’s a rare a rarity so I think he just used his experience to his Advantage which I don’t feel like we value enough I I agree completely with that you know honestly like like I’m not I wouldn’t say I’m an amateur and civil tournament like person but like one of my my rules for the N tournament is like give me find me a team that has like a veteran guard like if if you have like a junior or senior guard who’s been with the program for a few years that’s a team that I’m willing to bet is going to go far in the tournament and you know Colorado I I want to get to this point about Colorado you know Colorado obviously won the first four won their first round game against uh against Florida uh got to that second round how did you know you mentioned a little bit about Colorado and how their program is has kind of improved and some of that is adding you know a really some really talented players like they they have three NBA draft picks on their on that team last year but how did Colorado’s program Improvement track with how D Silva improved and fit in fit in with the program is is is there is there does it kind of go hand inand because you know you do think about it you want players who’ve been on winning teams and and and been with programs that have kind of risen up with them yeah I think it’s it’s kind of a weird situation because if you look at Colorado’s like win total by year like they dating back to let’s see 20 18 2019 they had 20 wins every season since and then 2022 23 they dropped down to 18 so like the program was always on this cuss but it was like they had one tournament appearance um dating back to 2020 2021 and they lost in the second round and it was like okay they went 23 and9 how are we going to build off of that and they missed the tournament and then they missed the tournament the following year they go 18 and 17 and it’s like okay what happened just two years ago we’re in the tournament and so I think it’s just like the ultimate Buy in from everyone um which Tristan I think is probably the epitome of this is like when your best player is bought into reaching a different level I think it pushes everyone else and I think it kind of brings everyone to a different level now I’m not going to overlook the roster additions that they made they made they had some some great uh portal ads they had obviously Cody Williams who I don’t feel like he it really sucked to see him in the tournament just because he he had his nose broken he hurt yeah he he had a lot of inj up he was a different guy but like even adding him was like a big deal for the program and so I think it’s just the buying and I think it’s more like not everything in basketball has to be like okay this guy is scoring 10 more points per game I think it’s just like this guy is our best player and he cares and I think because he cares I’m going to care as the seventh guy or as the the first guy off the bench or the second guy off the bench whatever it is like if he cares the most why shouldn’t I care and I think that’s kind of like the the really cool thing about Tristan is like he improved and the team improved and they also reached different levels and I think it has a lot to do with his off the court and on the court mentality obviously we’ve kind of hinted at this that the NBA is a little bit of a different game than Co than college game what do you see as the biggest uh biggest strength that D Silva is going to be able to bring to the NBA immediately U I’m gonna pinpoint his shooting um the three-point shooting and his defense um because realistically those are the things that get you on the floor and defense is what keeps you on the floor because even if you can’t score that well if you could defend you will be on the floor in some capacity until obviously in the playoffs when teams kind of um will chase you on offense and stuff like that but realistically you look at this magic team and you feel free to correct me because this is your but you look at this magic team you have Paulo you have fron and you just have these guys even Jaylen Suggs and Cole Anthony thinks he’s a he’s probably one B I would imagine but he’s not that’s why he comes off the bench right yeah Cole Anthony thinks let him be Off the Bench yeah so but you go to a team where you’re probably the fourth or fifth option so you know you’re not going to get the quantity of shots that you’re used to getting in college but if Paulo’s trying to get some space in the paint trist or trying to make something happen in the painting excuse me trist’s gonna be open for threes like he has to hit open threes and he will hit those and I think that’s kind of what where his game translates the best because if you could hit that open shot one your teammates will trust you which at the NBA level is a big deal two the coach will trust you which is even a bigger deal because you might get a you might get a play drawn up for you um an out- of bounds play or something like that which is pretty big deal I think people kind of Overlook how big of a deal it is to have a play drawn up for you because in most cases it’s like Paulo’s get this play is going to Paulo or this yeah yeah we’re setting a pick and roll for Paulo spread the floor just give him him room yeah if he hits a shots he may get a play drawn up for him and so I think he has that ability to to be a weapon from three and then defensively um he’s lengthy um he’s a high energy guy and I go back to athleticism because I feel like that was a lot of people knock him for not being athletic but then they Praise Him for being really good on the defensive end so it’s like you have to have some sort of athleticism to to really keep up with guys and so that also touches on his high IQ where he’s making up for his inability um to not be a freak athlete but yeah I think those are the three things that stand out to me the most uh you know one thing about this magic offense is and I think we’re seeing this more like we saw Boston just win a championship where they essentially had five decision makers on Theo um I think one of the things the magic really like about about D Silva is his decision making and his ability to to like I I I I this is the theory that I have about what the magic are trying to build they’re trying to find uh skill versatility as much as positional versatility they not only want guys that can play the three and the four the two three and the four they want a forward who can play the point you know Palo ban Carol is essentially the team’s point guard uh during the playoffs um you know they they’ll have France Vagner bring the ball up and initiate offense you know I I watch just Silva and I think like this is a guy that can do that do you see him as someone who can be a table setter an initiator as a passer you know in that kind of an offense where everyone does everything I think so um I don’t think which at the college game it’s really hard to go off yeah it’s weird like it the college game is weird because they obviously there’s a lot of hockey passes there’s a lot of grenade passes where it’s like take the shot there’s three seconds left on the shot clock or whatever and they just do things a lot quicker but or sometimes um like they’re trying some guys are going to jack up a three as soon as they get across the three uh the half court line but at the NBA level I think he can facilitate enough um I think realistically the magic aren’t going to ask him to be Paulo like they’re not going to be like hey we need you to take the ball down 20 times a game like I imagine he’ll probably handle the ball five to 10 times per game if he’s lucky um I think a couple of those times will just be transition which is great because realistically gone are the days where it’s like okay rebounds let me find my point guard okay pass like I think that’s where Tristan fits in great here because you have if you’re the magic four or five guys on the court at all times who can bring the ball up or four guys probably and I think that’s where Tristan fits in seamlessly and I think he’s unselfish which I think helps um to the distribution aspect that you were hinting at because I think he knows right I would imagine he knows that if he gets to bring the ball up that doesn’t mean like the shots for him like that doesn’t mean okay Tristan you get the ball here you get the rebound so you take it coast to coast and just cook like I don’t think that’s how his mindset works I think he’s more than willing to make that right pass and so I think that’s where he’ll fit in um easily as well because I think he’s not going to force the issue which I I feel like a lot of young guys kind of are like I have the ball so it’s my sh time to shine yeah and I mean I think some of that does too come with age you know comes with experience of knowing like okay this is what we have to do for our team to win it’s it’s you know it it’s not that he’s done developing or he’s done getting better individually or doesn’t want things individually it’s he knows how to fit into a team concept um everyone’s talked very glowingly of jend Silva and I think rightfully so but what’s the biggest area that he has to improve as he moves to the NBA as he moves to the NBA level yeah um I would say kind of rebounding is a tough one I just it’s not that he’s bad at it it’s just like if there’s an aspect where it’s like I would like to see him assert himself more it’ probably be rebounding um I think rebounds you I the magic had attest to this in the playoffs was not their strongest suit I think you would agree with me and so they need someone who if he’s going to play because in the playoffs obviously it’s very different than the regular season if he’s going to play in the playoffs they need him willing to get in there at all times like regardless of like where you’re at on the floor like they need people crashing the boards and so I wouldn’t say there’s like a lack of effort there I just feel like they need somehow maybe he needs to get better at reading the ball off the rim or reading the ball off of wherever he’s out on the floor and just being a more complete rebounder um I think that’s it’s not the sexiest answer but I think that’s but I mean it’s a it’s it’s a good because if you’re I I know that was a criticism you know just looking at the numbers and you know some of it is I think when you look at draft analyst and you look at people analyzing the league I I still think there is a bit of well what position is he you know where does he play on the floor you know is he a three is he a four if he’s a four he’s not a good enough rebounder he’s not tall enough if he’s three he’s not athletic enough he’s too slow right um it’s and and I would argue that well the M like people ask me all the time who’s playing point guard for the magic and I would say positions don’t exist anymore right yeah the position thing weird and like everyone has to do everything yeah I think in college too especially this is why I harped on his rebounding because to look at his numbers which I mean going after his numbers is just S I feel bad about like just using his numbers but he averaged a career 3.8 it’s like okay you’re 68 you’re kind of at the college level it’s very positional like it’s like the guy he’s guarding is probably in the paint or near the paint um at many times during the game so it’s what what is preventing you from getting rebounds um you’re smart high IQ player high energy guy like what is pre preventing you from being there all the time you know that’s just where I would kind of um Circle something but I think he’s I don’t want say he’s a complete player by any means but I think he’s a very well-rounded player is is it a is the rebounding thing and I this is something that’s maybe harder to to track in the numbers is it is it a matter of being physical is he someone that likes to to to take hits and Dish Dish out some physicality I think I think you could look at that I think part of this is where like the one time is athleticism maybe affects him as I think even if he’s aggressively boxing out sometimes you just get out jumped like there’s no science behind that there’s no numbers behind that it’s just like sometimes team a over here has a rebound like Oregon they had um oh my gosh his name is slipping my mind uh they had a really good big man who just inhaled rebounds like all the time not Kare yeah like they no not K only became a rebounder when he got to Indiana right right no they had ah it’s G to bother me me um anyway they certain teams just have guys who they can out jump someone and I think that’s where he just kind of lacked that ability and it’s not probably not going to change for him so I think for him it just kind of comes down to okay if the guy’s shooting a corner three where are these misses typically go um if that guy’s boxed out in this angle what angle do I need to take to position myself so I think it’s just more of a science of rebounding um watch some Dennis Rodman Clips or something I don’t know I don’t know I want to tell an NBA player how to improve on rebounding but like just figure out a way to position yourself better and and you know this could also be a thing that’s like Okay the reason why he’s 18 and not a starting forward and a backup forward or or some like a spot starter is this rebounding issue like this may be the thing that’s like okay this is why he’s 18 that doesn’t mean he’s a bad player that doesn’t mean that he’s completely unusable it just means this is that that this is a a weakness you have to work around or you have to have a strong rebounder with with him in the lineup somewhere and again you know the way the magic depth chart is breaking out it feels like dilva would slot in as either the backup small forward behind France voger so he’s playing alongside Jonathan Isaac and potentially probably Mo Vagner as we’re recording this we’re recording this before fore agency um we all expect Mo Vagner to be back in Orlando um you know one way or the other um he’d be in that kind of lineup or he’d be you know kind of taking some of Jonathan Isaac’s minutes when you know or when Jonathan Isaac has to miss games because of his injury management the Silva might slot in there and that’ll be interest interesting too and like you mentioned the college game is just so different from the NBA in just spacing like like it’s like it’s hard sometimes for NBA people to watch college games because the spacing is just not they’re they’re they’re they’re starting to get more kind of five out or four out offenses but there’s still a lot of traditional two big lineups that that a lot of these college teams are playing yeah and the problem with college is like if you have a and they’re allowed to S yeah that too they want you to shoot threes and there’s a lot of college teams out there that will jack up the three but I think the problem with college ball that makes it so difficult to evaluate is it’s very like 90s early 2000s NBA where it’s like if you have a coordinated big man who has post moves you are going to run your offense through him and then everything else kind of happens after that so if he doesn’t have a look then he’s going to kick it out and I think that’s where the college game kind of gets hurt the most but it still works is the problem like these teams have these guys who are able to back down like the Kansas big man from a few years ago Zack Edy which yep I think if Zach Ed was in last year this is like a random tangent but if he’s in last year’s class I don’t think he goes anywhere near the lottery completely honest so I think I’m honestly you I’m not so shocked that he went where he went but I like PE like people in my comments got on me and saying like why why aren’t you talking about Zach Ed I’m just like Zack doesn’t have the mobility that the magic are looking for I don’t have him on my board for Orlando I just I just don’t think he’s a good fit here’s perfect College Center he’s perfect College Center as well like they’re not athle or not super athletic but they’re coordinated they can create for themselves in the post and I think that’s where the college game hurts itself and so uh maybe Tristan the more movement will allow him to be in better position better positions to get rebounds because obviously I don’t know how they’re going to use him like if they’re GNA have him guard the other team’s best score or if they’re going to have him switch a lot um that’s totally up to the coach obviously but he just might be in more positions to get rebounds which is I think a big factor yeah it’ll be interesting to see um I want to close out with this you know comparison is the thief of joy and all that but what player does Tristan dilva remind you of like what what what like to to just get this kind of final picture of his game as he’s coming into the NBA who’s whose game is he stealing from yeah I think I the two comparisons I see the most because I I’m I don’t like comparisons yeah it’s it’s it’s it’s a Shand for things yeah it’s a it’s a weird thing because I feel like comparisons is like when you compare someone to someone it’s like okay I’m saying they’re that person and I’m not saying he’s exactly this guy so don’t don’t come at me I’m not saying he’s this guy but I think in terms of doing all the right things and sort of being someone who can like shock you I like Derek White NOW obviously two different positions two different guys but like Derek white you look at the Celtics and you’re like okay they have Kristof notably another Colorado guy for for my for my audience hint hint no just want to note that that you’re speaking with some Authority on this yeah I think he just does all the right things like Derek white you look at the Celtics and they just want a title this way you have two super max players and Tatum and brown you have kristofh porzingis who’s a former All-Star Drew holiday who is probably the most underrated player in the league and Derek white is sometimes the guy making the most important plays that aren’t in the stat sheet and I feel like that’s where Tristan to Silva is going to be um I I saw another um comparison between him and Kyler Anderson but I feel like that’s doing a lot of I feel like that’s taken away a lot of his athleticism like I don’t feel like he’s that non-athletic yeah I I I I remember I remember you did that in the in the minute video that you that you put out for locked on and look I’m a I’m a slow-mo fan I love Kyle Anderson but I agree he’s definitely not I see elements of that like and Kyle Anderson’s a really solid player um but I agree he’s definitely more athletic I I’ve this may be cheap because a he’s a magic player and B he’s also German I’ve kind of described Tristan D Silva as a less athletic fron Vagner okay and fron is super is pretty athletic so that’s I don’t think that’s that’s that’s a knock knock on knock on him but I do see them as very similar players you know they both obviously grew up kind of in the German basketball system um and I I do see them actually that like they have they have some mutual very close friends right um but they I do see them as like very similar with how they kind of operate and move through the lane so you know they’re they’re obviously getting a really really really strong player here uh in interest to Silva I know the magic are just over the moon with how excited they are uh to have him in here he seems like an absolutely great kid and I think we’re all really excited to see him uh get going The Orlando Magic continued their work to secure their roster. They did it in a unique way with a renegotiate and extend deal with Jonathan Isaac that should be a downright bargain very soon for them.

I chat today too with Locked on Buffs’ Kevin Borba to learn more about Tristan Da Silva and why he made such a big impact for Colorado and what he brings to the Orlando Magic.
