NBA Today | ESPN reacts to Warriors acquire Buddy Hield from 76ers,Lakers want bring back Kyle Kuzma

this just in sports center the Warriors they found some three-point shooting to maybe help offset the loss of clay Golden State getting buddy healed from the 76ers this afternoon as part of a signing trade the deal is for a guaranteed two years plus a partially guaranteed third-year total of 21 million heeled averag just over 12 points per game the second half of the season last year with Philly while shooting nearly 40% from Beyond The Arc over the last five seasons healed he’s been clutch from distance no player has more than more three-point field goals made then healed in that span the player who has the second most no surprise Mark you have been covering the bay throughout Klay Thompson’s entire career here where does Golden State go from here now that this Duo has been broken up that we kind of thought we’d see forever well you’re Bay was in morning yesterday uh still is today uh the interesting thing about what Steph said to me is he told him to go enjoy play basketball like but is Steph going to enjoy playing basketball with this team going forward uh Mike dun leevy is in a real tough spot you know Bob Myers really put him in a in a tough spot he he didn’t hit jackpot last year and it’s not hot from marketing it’s not hot for d rozan I don’t know what they’re doing and Brian and I are going to Paris right we know what it is Brian training camp starts next week Saturday step um come start like this is where they start talking they start getting in his ear so I wonder if that’s going to be something that the Warriors they better get something done before he gets to USA is the sort of Genesis of many super teams but I I just can’t I I could never ever ever ever ever see stuff out of that uniform but I’ve seen stuff before in this league yeah he’s synonymous I think with golden state but for so many years Klay Thompson was as well the question we’ve been asking since this move was made Zach is what does Golden State need to do not about keeping Steph Curry but about keeping him feeling good about the direction of this franchise so there are good team there’s honor in being a good team in the Western Conference not a bad team they can’t rebuild as long as Steph is on the roster and I agree with Brian I can’t imagine him ever not being yeah a warrior Mark mentioned Lowry marinan among others the decision they’re going to have to make it’s the same decision they were making when they were having their little diance with Paul George can we get somebody in here while keeping enough stuff where it’s really worth our while to trade picks young players whatever it is are we making oursel good enough to make a leap up the Western conference I think that’s going to be really really tough because any team with a player like Markin is going to start with Jonathan kaminga and that’s just going to be a tough pill for Golden State to swallow he’s the gem of the two timelines thing which mostly kind of failed but he’s the gem of it and I just they’re they’re going to have to ask themselves is it worth it are we making ourselves good enough to challenge all the juggernauts at the top well he’s getting better each and every year depend on what goes out the door though it depends on what goes out the door that is true but that’s a guy who fought for his starting spot to be able to play more minutes and I think it sort of paid off that gamble on himself and so I think they see that and that’s why you said he’s a g now to the most important thing to use the Grid or not the grid okay once clay took the pictures off the grid that means Steph is not going to put you on the grid but it’s all good it’s all love because what Steph said mattered the most whether it’s IG stories or not what we did will never be done again that is amazing this is the best shooting backourt that we have ever seen and even these guys as they are what is did you say was a diance yeah they’re having a diance with their Prime right in the latter stages of their career they’re still very impressive shooters that I think have found ways where one step is going to be built around him and Clay is going to be able to provide a lot of boost with a system that is built around Luka honestly it’s hard to picture the Warriors without Steph and clay clay of course agreed to a three-year $50 million deal to join the Mavericks that’s according to wge and then earlier today Steph Curry reacted for the first time saying that he’s going to I’m going to miss you clay even though we won’t finish the journey together what we did will never be done again couldn’t have imagined a better run with you and Draymond Green it changed the whole Bay Area it changed the way the game is played which is absolutely true killer clay at the center of it all thank you for everything go enjoy playing basketball and doing what you do Splash Bros for life my guy so that’s what Steph Curry had to say about clay Thompson electing to joining the uh Dallas Mavericks but did you happen to hear what his father Michael Thompson had to say I got wind got win take a listen not too feeling too much in a congratulatory Mo mood right now you know because I mean obviously it’s Clay’s decision it’s his life he’s a grown man I was hoping hoping as you can you can uh assess I was hoping and praying he’d finish his career with the Lakers so Michael Thompson played Five Seasons with the Lakers of course he does radio color commentary as well but Zach as a basketball decision do you think that clay made the right choice in electing to go to Dallas that depends on what clay wants I think Dallas is closer clearly having just made the finals to playing Championship level basketball than the Lakers are I also do wonder if it’s been such an intense Spotlight in Golden state for so long some of the drama there self created by Draymond Green’s you know suspensions and all that but just the attention on that team becoming a supernova Global phenomenon l would be very similar with LeBron and Ronnie and JJ reick I do wonder if clay was like I I I can contend for a title and play not that Dallas is a small Market team but the spotlight just isn’t the same the pressure just isn’t the same there would even be pressure I think in being the guy for whom LeBron took the pay cut if that’s how it played out and the taxes aren’t the same that part true well it reminds me of like Ray Allen going to Miami I I think this is a great move for clay uh he’s going to get the easiest three-point shots he had since k and Curry when he played with them and Golden State and all those respectfully PJ Washington the threes you had missed in the corner Clay’s going to hit those um then you go in there like JJ just got there Jason kid’s been there yeah Nico’s doing a great great job and I like the niji uh Naji Marshall pickup I think he’s a nice addition to their starting five I think clay will fitting great coming off the bench and and we’ll have uh a chance to show that he’s still on the top level you mentioned some of those missed shots for the Dallas Mavericks in the finals Chan what exactly does clay alleviate here for Dallas well if you think about Luca donic he’s such a strong gravitational force that he’s going to create open shots now the reason why they weren’t competitive in the NBA Finals is because his teammates could knock him down but look at Luca he’s an elite shot Creator he’s top three in both points and assists and That’s So Raven can see it before it happens behind your head knocks oh nope hold it did not knock it down and so now you insert one of the best Elite catch and Shooters in Klay Thompson and you can’t help off of him but watch this that’s a small window and he’s able to shoot so yes I think all of those factors mattered uh when you think about the big scheme of things not so much of a spotlight but look at this number he’s still got it 219 catch and shoot three-point field goals last season the second most in the NBA do you guys know who was number one who any guesses Boom Boom come on go real quick number James has agreed to a two-year deal that includes a player option in year two to remain with the Lakers woe this was not the full three-year contract that was available to LeBron and the Lakers so how did they arrive here Malika LeBron James with essentially a one plus one deal it also includes a no trade clause only Bradley Beal has one in the NBA but essentially puts LeBron James right back here next year with the ability uh to decline his option and either make more money by doing an additional uh a new contract probably another OnePlus One or if the Lakers are in the same position they are now and there’s uh a player at the midlevel exception that they think they could get LeBron James could take less next year and and help out the Lakers salary cap situation just gives him flexibility gives the team flexibility either way uh but LeBron James under contract for his 22nd season in the NBA and if he’s going to be traded uh he’ll have the right uh to make a decision on that LeBron James under contract here wo his son bronnie James signing his contract today so we are officially going to see the first fatherson duo in the NBA please stick around we’ll be back with you in just a minute I want to bring in the rest of our panel today CH auma Mark Spears Kendrick Perkins will be joining us in just a little bit but Mark I want to start with you here were you surprised that LeBron signed a OnePlus One deal with a player option instead of that three-year Max it’s brilliant not surprise at all extremely brilliant I mean but he did something different like the Nuggets Hawks Lakers Kings heat bulls and warriors all have kids that are part of the front office George car Doc Rivers Bernie Bickerstaff Nate McMillan Don Nelson Flip Saunders all their sons have gotten into coaching this is the first time we’ve seen a player be able to use his presence to help his son get into the NBA he has a one plus oneyear deal but his son signed a four-year deal for a player an African-American player to be able to do that I think is brilliant the runway his son has now to use these four years to prove that he’s an NBA player long term by the end of those four years then with the Lakers tutelage I think he’ll turn himself into a quality NBA player so for him to be able to use his power to do that I I think is pretty legendary and I know we’re talking a lot first of all I love your glasses I’m looking at you and I’m admiring the blue okay I know we’re talking about you know particularly Bron’s experience with the Lakers I think it’s interesting when you hear this deal I think of the final countown okay I’m not good he didn’t let me down there okay really for LeBron James the fact that he has a choice how he wants to end and potentially based off of signing you know alongside bronny yeah that is interesting but it also reminds me of Bryce too because I don’t know if you saw it on the interwebs Bryce was like oh you know when people are talking about potentially me playing with my dad having two sons he’s like he’s he’s going to be 42 he’s going to be 42 at that point and that’s why you see the one by one because I do think that we are at the final chapter and it’s going to be fascinating to see where he lets things go and certainly sentiment plays a piece in all of this but we’re talking about LeBron James yeah and when you’re talking about LeBron James he’s synonymous with winning and trying to put a team together around him that is going to be able to do that the Lakers finished seventh in the Western Conference last year after going through the playin they only were able to win one playoff game that’s not the the bar that LeBron James has grown accustomed to and the team the type of team that he generally wants to play on so by taking that one plus one not necessarily the three years that we talked about W mentioned maybe looking at that mid-level next year mark how much of a focus does this put on Rob pinka the front office to continue to Tinker and make some moves here press is on Raw he knows it but here’s the thing we get so enamored with all free agency sign started you got to sign this guy you got what about this guy he’s up are they going to make this trade when did Damon Lillard get moved when did Drew holiday get moved when did James Harden get moved from Houston to Brooklyn yep there’s a lot of time left before they play a game sure so I I think the pressure is on ra but there the Lakers fans all should have some patience well Kendrick Perkins I’m not sure the p and Perkins stands for patience um but I’d like to get your thoughts here both on the deal LeBron signed and then what this means to the Lakers in terms of how they’re going to approach the rest of their summer here sir well I I think it starts with you know Braun signing the one plus one I’m like damn okay so he’s not committing to the three-year deal and I think you know it’s coming close to an end right LeBron he’s taking a year bye I I we know how much he invested invest in his body right we get all that but at some point his body is going to start talking to him and at some point he’s going to walk away from the game and we’re not going to be able to witness his greatness and I think is it could possibly be next year to be honest with you but this has Rob pelinka written all over it because even though it’s a one plus one it’s a Max one plus one and so LeBron gave him an opportunity to go out there and do what’s best and we all know LeBron uh you know the reports were out there that he wanted Klay Thompson right and if you know he wanted Klay Thompson and he was willing to make a pay cut and obviously you had to do a sign and trade why didn’t you get the deal done and the reason that they didn’t get the deal done is because Rob pinka and Jeanie bus in the front office of the Lakers they’re holding on to one individual that everybody wants and that’s Austin Reeds and until they’re ready to part with Austin Reeds right and upgrade the roster and get a upgrade which I think Klay Thompson is a upgrade when you put them alongside Anthony Davis and LeBron James then I feel like the Lakers are still going to be in this spot and it’s not a bad spot right that’s still a top five team right now in the Western Conference in my opinion but top five is not good enough for LeBron James he wants to be number one anytime you have him he wants to win a championship or have a chance to compete for one you’re making a face is that from top five top five I mean it’s a tough I like Shir confence that Lavender is pretty bro I like the the top five I don’t know your point for a team that didn’t make the playoffs last year but but this is what I’m saying y’all Y three my my my sisters and my brothers give me five give me five teams that are better than the Lakers right now well and I think that that’s what the West is going to be trying to sort of shift and and figure out I think there’s a a ton of teams right now though starting with Oklahoma City that are sort of topped down in yeah the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference sort of looking at the Lakers right now well but to your Point Park Nico Harrison created the space to be able to bring in Klay Thompson and that’s not something that we saw necessarily Rob pinka do so I want to bring in our salary cap expert Bobby marks because Bobby if LeBron looking here if he takes the full Max this season it puts the Lakers over the second apron that big scary term what exactly does that mean how do the Lakers avoid it what are they trying to do here yeah Malik the second apron is at 189 right now they’re at 190 it’s most important that they’re below that second apron when we get to February doesn’t have to be right now here and I think when you’re looking at it from the Lakers perspective there’s certainly a lot of different Avenues as far as where they can go I think one of them is certainly when we look at a player like Christian wood if you feel like you can’t make a trade you can wave Christian Wood and stretch his money out over 3 years that would save you $2 million and that would get you under the second apron you could do that right now if you want but it’s all about getting under by the end of next year next year a couple things about the apron just so we’ve got some clarification here the Lakers can still even though they’re over can still trade D’Angelo Russell and ruy hachimura together as long as they are below that 189 number it’s the post transactional number as long as they get by below that they can’t take back more money right now so they’re pressed right at that second apron why it’s important that they’re under when we get to februaries if they are over their 2032 first round pick becomes Frozen they won’t have the ability to trade that next year and Rob pinka has said that they would look into trading those future firsts if the right deals or future picks rather if the right deals come to fruition in order to continue to maximize around LeBron if we could bring wo back into the conversation here W what Avenues the Lakers atg grade their roster uh Mark mentioned it it’s a long summer free agency the offseason just started a lot of deals um take time you’ve got GMS and team presidents who are going to be in Sacramento for summer league they’re going to be in Las Vegas for summer league and you typically this is how you see free agency go you see a bunch of moves right away and then it slows down um and that’s what’s happening in the marketplace now uh there’s there’s a few months before the season starts there’s a trade deadline in February uh but it’s not all going to happen at once and the Lakers have 15 players on their roster right now that is extremely limiting for them Bobby described uh the salary cap limitations and so uh I I think this is going to be uh something that plays out over time but you know there may be a world where there are really no significant upgrades from the group that the Lakers have right now uh but they’ll keep talking all summer W thank you so very much we have a lot to get to on our show still to come on MV spee fore fore foree foreign speech fore [Music] for fore spee jobee fore fore foree speech fore 1. Can someone please help me understand how the Celtics can have over $350 million in contracts going out this season while Lakers are penalized in 2nd Tier apron spending $190 million & unable to improve?

  2. Damn man I wish we would've gotten buddy heild down here in South Beach. Miami heat aren't making any significant moves right now

  3. Every team can Sign players but the Lakers can make no moves because lebron wanna eat up all the money!!! Lebron could of took 10 million and could of got anybody..he don't think about that

  4. 6ers got a 2031 2nd round pick? Lol. I think they get a trade exception that would net them another 9 million, if im mistaken then this makes no sense for the 6ers. Heild would have been hitting wide open 3s all game.

  5. I'm 52 years old, I graduated from highschool in 1990, Michael Jordan was the face of the NBA, and Grant Hill was the rookie of the year. It was a time when teams were trying to win, why would the 76ers acquire Paul George, and then letting Buddy go to the Warriors, crazy

  6. A lot of teams don't want to do business with the Lakers unless it's an overwhelming offer for them. They also don't want to see Lebron win again. Some of it is self-inflicted and some is unfair.

  7. Lakers got bamboozelled with drafting his child then giving him the max to play for them. F that never!

  8. When you are a NBA player with a heart and character like Klay Thompson, not ego centered, and unselfishly love the game of basketball, you really love and stay loyal to your teammates with a burning desire to win games and championships the right way!

When Klay began to experience the disloyalty from some of his closest teammates and management, and he began to watch his closest teammates turn on him, it was devastating for Klay! He saw that the team leaders and management were willing to get rid of him at the drop of a hat, disrespect him, and force him to take a pay cut ifvhexchosexto stay with the Warriors.

Klay had to wrestle all season with the feeling of rejection and being disrespected along with making the decision to leave the team he loved playing with for so long.
Finally, he concluded to do what was best for him. Klay is a veteran player who younger players respect and love playing basketball with. Playing badketball is a natural fit for Klay in this new era aquarian age. Klay is motivated and plays his best ball with the vibe of younger players like he did with Jordan Poole, and the younger Warrior players when came back from his injury. So, Klay will play his best games with the Mavs and enjoy living in his less costly mansion and lifestyle in Dallas!
Congratulations, Klay! Our prayers and blessings are with you! Be happy!🎉

  9. Explain how the Lakers are unable to offer a big salary and get better help to advance their team. I feel we throw money around on theses players and a lot of times they don’t produce. Why when we win a title then there’s so much money to offer. All this is a joke at times.
