over the last week the Dallas Mavericks has seen a huge change in the roster where we traded away Tim Hardway Jr and Josh green and failed to resign Derrick Jones Jr Jason kid has a huge job on his hands as far as who’s the starting lineup who’s coming off the bench what rotations are we running with as we got Klay Thompson Nai Marshall and Quinton Grimes now some players will see a promotion in the role while some might see a demotion but one player who undoubtedly earned his promotion is Derek Lively a young rookie at only 20 years old has shown the Dallas Mavericks exactly who he is just the flashes of Brilliance the ability to absorb knowledge and grow right in front of our eyes as a young rookie a young rookie Center in the league being coached by none other than Tyson Chandler Derek livley has gone through a crazy rookie year and we can only expect him to have an even better sophomore year but in this video we’re going to break down everything about Derek ly how he looked in the beginning of the year his his growth throughout the season his historic playoff run and what does this actually mean for Daniel Gafford but how’s it going everybody my name is is Marcel Martin this is Mavericks digest bringing the latest news on everything Mavericks related and before we start this video I just want to thank you guys so much for just hitting the like button and subscribing weekend will be doubled we’re two lucky people will win in our giveaway and I appreciate it guys but like I said in the intro Derek Lively definitely earned his promotion on the Dallas Mavericks we weren’t too sure when we draft him if he would be starting Jason kid himself did say that we’ll wait and see what that looks like but from day one from the very first game that he played Derek ly showed that he belongs on the Dallas Mavericks and he does he does deserve to be a starter Derek Lively 16 points 10 rebounds and 8 7.5% from the floor is the is only the second player in NBA history to record 15 plus points 10 plus rebounds and 85 Plus percent shooting in an NBA debut that right there was the start of a wonderful season with Derek ly a young rookie who does have his mistakes the three in the key on defense does happen quite often we saw in the playoffs but that’s to be expected with a rookie and Derrik Lively is so good sometimes you forget that he’s young he shows signs of Brilliance that he knows about his his own awareness his facial Awareness on the court the defensive sets he’s never really lost on any given play and he’s very vocal on defense helping other people get to where they need to be letting people know about certain movements Derek lley has a very high defensive and just overall High basketball IQ for a rookie and his ability to just get better over the course of the season and then going to his very first playoff run his very first Finals run it was able to still become one of or was one of our best players for that entire playoffs Derek Lively more than earned his starting position but if we take a look here Derek Lively’s the second stats against the San Antonio Spurs 12 points per game 6.7 rebounds per game and two blocks per game owned wimy on national TV in on their first game of their rookie season so even though Victor wanyama won Rookie of the Year and even though Chad homr was was a runner up Derek Lively showed us against these guys that I also belong we saw in the playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder that anytime Chad had to see Derek ly down low it was a problem Derek ly was not allowing anything to happen couldn’t even operate on Derek ly they had to pull a switch they had to get get Derrik ly out of the paint to guard Shay on the perimeter and even then Derek Lely has grown as a perimeter Defender early in the season there was many times whenever team would switch off Derek Lively pull him up to the perimeter the quicker guards would just blow right past him easy bucket but in the playoffs we saw in real time that Derek ly did not fear guarding the perimeter and in the finals we also saw Derek ly not having any fear of shooting from the perimeter where he made his first NBA 3 in the NBA Finals there is no fear in Derek Lobby’s heart he has the drive the determination and the work ethic and he fits this team so well we’ve seen many quotes we’ve heard from many players just what Derek lvy means to them and then in Reverse is how well they or how much the Dallas Mavericks mean to Derrik ly they really are a family and unfortunately we did see Derrik ly lose his mother towards the end of the season and even though he had to take some time away from the team no one’s going to argue that he shouldn’t have done that but he came back ready to play he came back ready to the fight he knew his team needed him but he also knew that his team was going to have his back but like I said Derrick lvy had a wonderful season even though he wasn’t the Rookie of the Year or the runner up his stats still look pretty good for a rookie Center if we take a look at those stats for his rookie year he averaged 8.8 points 6.9 rebounds 1.1 assists 1.4 blocks s Steals and 0.9 turnovers per game as well as 2.6 fouls per game he shot 74% from the floor it should be about what 100% from three I I think he did take one three before the finals game but he’s at least 50% from three 81% of his twos are assisted his defensive box plus minus 08 and he has a warp of 08 Derek Lively as a rookie is better than advertised on on draft night when we drafted Cas on Wallace but then we traded with OKC for Derek Lively not many people understood exactly what we were getting even if you’re someone like me who watched Derrick Lively play college in Duke you knew this kid was special but every single game it felt like he was just showing you what more he can do what else can he show us and then even in his deficiencies and where he needs to improve he’s been able to do that in real time in front of us especially in the playoffs where he had the second highest plus minus out of any rookie in their first playoff run it was amazing only second behind Manu jobi who is a m multi-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer and I believe given another two to three years Derrik ly could be one of the top five centers in the league if he isn’t already I understand there’s others you got Jolan B towns Anthony Davis there’s joic Zion is I I guess a small Center there there’s other bigs out there Victor wanyama of course but Derek Livy’s work ethic his Drive the fact that he’s a sponge and he just absorbs so much knowledge and the fact that he has he has Kyrie Irving and Luca dones in his rookie year to teach and guide him and now he has another Mentor in Klay Thompson I believe Klay Thompson is going to encourage Derek live to shoot threes of course the lineup may look a little weird to start this season we’re going to see obviously Klay Thompson uh Derek lley PJ Washington Luke and Kyrie but as the season goes on as as Jason kid loves to get creative with his lineups we may see a situation where Klay Thompson might be the ball handler doing a pick and roll situation with Derek Lively but instead of a pick and roll it’s a pick and pop having Derek Lively hit threes at the top of the key I’m all for it and the beauty of Derek Lively is his flexibility to do multiple things he’s not a one-dimensional player I’d argue he is not a two-dimensional player he’s a three-dimensional player with the pick and roll can attack the basket with ease if he has to get to the free throw line even though he wasn’t great for his first full season but towards the end of the season in the playoffs we saw Derek Livy not afraid to go to the line we in the Oklahoma Thunder series they kept doing the hack of lively trying to get him to the line and he was still knocking down the Fritos to the point where they had to respect it and they stopped Derek Lively is able to become one of the best centers in the league while he’s playing maybe all time that might be saying too much but I believe when it’s all said and done Derek Livy will have cemented himself at is one of the Premier bigs during his tenure in the NBA the guy’s ceiling is through the roof the potential is insane but as long as he continues to make those strides as long as he continues to grow and learn Derrik lvy can do whatever he wants and whenever this team does win a championship it’ll be be it it will be because of Derek lley and what he provides to this team but as we continue looking at just how great Derek lley is this is something that came out just the other day the Mavericks believe Derrick livley has a potential to become an elite defensive anchor similar to Kevin Garnett or wae Noah Dallas is expected to start Lively full-time next season with Daniel Gafford moving to a bench roll so that right there just solidifies it that they everybody they as in everybody in the Dallas M organization believes in Derek Livy they see exactly who he who he can be and I don’t think that’s an over exaggeration saying that Derek lavy could be similar to a Kevin Garnett or wae Noah as a defensive as an elite defensive anchor and I and I’d argue that Derrick lavy’s entire play style could be very similar to Kevin Garnett’s Derek lavy can shoot the ball he can shoot the ball maybe not very very well but he can shoot the ball if he does if he takes more reps his shot will develop but the fact that he can shoot about 70% plus from the floor as a rookie is pretty darn good to me but like I said sky is a limit Derek lvy can be whoever he wants he maybe he won’t be the next Kevin Garnett or waim Noah but he’ll be the first Derek Lively a player who will inspire many bigs to to idolize his game and that’s not a hyperbole I truly believe it the kid is very special But continuing this was early before the season this was right after we drafted Derek D Lively I want to say this was around the time of Summer League of last year Tyson Chandler says Dereck Lively is his project with the Mavs and he’s someone they definitely definitely needed that’s always been the missing key with the Mavs trying to get him right he wants to learn he’s active right now he’s a sponge even last year last September Tyson Chandler himself knew exactly what Derek live was going to be and that’s a sponge that’s the best way to describe him someone who’s just able to learn able to learn quickly and Implement that in his game where okay I’m teaching you something in the gym but it doesn’t take you that long to go out there and do it in a game and help your team now with what you’re learning and if you’re like me you’ve seen all the videos of drik Livy in the gym with Tyson Chandler working on not just his three-point shot which I do love but working on his inside game working on boxing out getting rebounds attacking the basket his fadeaways his mid-range which I hope he does extend his shot to the mid-range I think that’d be insane for us but Derek Lively is going to become even better than he is now sky is a limit this isn’t even his final form But continuing Jason kid on balancing working on extending Derek lavy’s range with capitalizing on his impact at The Rim in due time he’s going to be one that probably shoots a lot of Threes And I’m all here for it I said earlier the the lineups and the rotations are going to be probably weird in the beginning until Jason kid kind of feels feels A team out because we just got Klay Thompson we got Marshall we got Grimes we know where they’re going to be but we don’t know how well they’ll work and how they’ll play with other players but like I said earlier if there’s a situation where Klay Thompson is the is the ball handler and he does a pick and pop with Derrick lley shoot those threes and if that’s the case we could play Derek lvy alongside Daniel Gafford and having those two Twin Towers that’s very close to what Minnesota does with Carl anthy towns and Rudy goar except we could probably do it a lot better than the Minnesota Timberwolves but speaking of Daniel Gafford in the lineup obviously with Derrik ly now becoming our starting center Daniel Gafford is getting pushed to the bench and I believe we’ll see it a little bit different this upcoming season I don’t think this will be where they split minutes where they’ll both average about 20 22 minutes a piece I think Derek lavy is earning actual starter minutes where he’ll play about 25 maybe 28 minutes a game and Daniel Gafford will play maybe 15 to 18 minutes a game but this right here you know right here Dallas Mavericks 2024 2025 NBA season potential starting lineup we’ll see Luca dones Kyrie Irving Klay Thompson PJ Washington and Derek lavy just like I said before but the lineups will change I don’t think the starting lineup will change but whoever comes off the bench first as our six-man maybe Daniel Gafford if they’re going to continue to split their time but if it’s like I think it’s going to be where Lively’s going to get actual starter minutes then Daniel Gafford may not be the first one Off the Bench we may replace PJ Washington with Naji Marshall who knows but that’s a good problem to have when you have too many pieces and you’re not sure what your lineups are going to look like you’re in a good situation where you can easily make it back to the finals versus my lineups are be the same as last year we made no improvements you’re kind of worried as other teams are getting better the West might not be as stacked as was last year but the Dallas Mavericks are definitely going to be at least the top the top three and we’re not going to be three we’re going to be one or two next season I truly believe that book it I said it here go to Vegas and lose your money on my bets but regardless the Dallas Mavericks are ready to go Derek ly is getting that promotion to that starting center roll which I believe will lead to actually
