The Hidden Genius Of The San Antonio Spurs…

The Hidden Genius Of The San Antonio Spurs…

after a loss to the warriors on March 11th Greg papovich had this to say about Chris Paul quote he’s one of the all-time best competitors ever in the league he’s a great leader great competitor it’s always fun to see him and quote Paul is third all time in the NBA and assists with 11,894 and a 12-time Allstar even at 39 years old he’s a massive upgrade to the Spurs point guard position San Antonio started last season experimenting with Jeremy soan at the spot before going with Trey Jones which was more of a traditional look of course Paul brings a Hall of Fame resume and Veteran leadership to a young Spurs roster that went just 28 and 60 in 2023 24 it definitely would be fair to say that oh well Stefan Castle’s at the point guard position he did say that he wants to play point I have no clue how the Spurs are going to utilize him I think down the line that could be on the table but as of right now Chris Paul is going to be the starting point guard of this team and it makes all the sense in the world he’s one of the best passers like I said ever he’s still an elite catch and shoot three-point shooter he still can knock down mid-range shots he still can generate open looks he’s going to be massive for Victor wama he’s truly going to be able to help him reach his potential going into the year too remember David Robinson for you Spurs fans won a championship in his second year so anything is possible to this point in the NBA Paul absolutely is near the end of his career but he still averaged 9.2 points and 6 .8 assists in 26.4 minutes per game last season 42.3% catch and shoot of Threes 48% for mid-range he had five double doubles and a total of 11 games with 10 plus assists in just 58 games his leadership will help San Antonio exceed expectations just like 5 years ago when it helped Oklahoma City Paul was an Allstar That season averaging 17.6 points five rebounds and 6.7 assist as the Thunder won 44 games and pushed the Houston Rockets to seven games in the first round of the playoffs he led the league in clutch time scoring helped the Thunder close out game after game which is why they were the fifth seed remember the Thunder had a 99.8% chance of missing the Playoffs according to ESPN when it pulled its experts the Spurs are probably going to have something similar that the western conference is as deep as it’s ever been it’s extremely competitive we saw the Houston Rockets go 41 and 4 won for example last season and missed the plan yet alone the playoffs before the Spurs they have a lot going for them and it starts off with Victor wama but it’s also more it’s a guy like a Devon Vel right it’s a guy like a Jeremy soan going into his third year that’s usually when young players break out top 10 picks Kelvin Johnson we know he can score they’ve also got Malachi brandham they’ve got Zack Collins very solid role players to go with their main core but the biggest thing is wemi the second biggest thing is going to be Stefan Castle the third biggest thing is going to be Devon vasel and then I’ll add in Chris Paul to be able to make sure that these guys get good looks and that they’re more efficient and that they can learn the game in and out from a veteran who’s going into his 20th season but defensively that’s why I like safan Castle because you have to realize that when I think of the Spurs I think of their defense I think of Tim Duncan David Robinson Sean Elliot Manu janob even Bruce Owen was an incredible Elite Defender Tony Parker Mario Elliot all these guys were very good defenders in the Spurs year after year were able to build Powerhouse defensive teams and you look at Castle overall the reason why as a freshman he was getting playing time and he was thrown into a massive role on a Powerhouse team in Yukon is because of his defense he’s Elite defensively he’s the best defender in this class according to most people I would say he’s the most versatile defender in this draft at 6’6 he can guard pretty much any position one through four I mean I would say at the very least he’s very strong offensively can finish at The Rim he’s got a floater he’s got a runner is not a good three-point shooter but when I look at guys who are poor three-point Shooters I look at their free throw percentage 75% certainly something to build off of at the end of the season he was at 90% so he was really knocking down them at a high rate which means that his jump shot from The Arc is only going to improve and that’s why you add in a guy like a Chris Paul somebody who I like I said Paul made 42.3% of his catch and shoot threes guy who has been a good scorer and an efficient one at that his entire career so he’s only going to be able to help this young player last season the Spurs were the youngest team in the league and remain poised despite going through an 18 game losing streak from November 5th through December 15th their Improvement of 6.6 net points per game in the second half of the season was the largest jump in the league remember San Antonio won seven of their last 11 games including wins over the Oklahoma City Thunder Indiana Pacers Golden State Warriors Phoenix Suns New York Knicks New Orleans Pelicans and the Denver Nuggets there was just a lot to like from their young Court Devin vasel in his final 33 games averaged 21.3 points 4.3 rebounds and five assists while shooting almost 40% from three on over six attempts per game he showed flashes of being a three-level scorer who can create for himself and others he also made strides defensively he’s got a 610 Wings span and it seemed like he finally knew how to utilize it as an attribute Kelvin Johnson like I said earlier is a good scoring Wing Trey Jones quietly shot 44% from three after mid-February Jeremy Sohan is sort of the Wild Card of this team tenacious Defender unique skill set he was a top 10 pick in 2022 now entering his third season it’s time for him to break out he’s got all the tools and potential to do that especially with Chris Paul running this offense in terms of Victor wiama to me he showed that he has the potential to develop into the greatest basketball player of all time his per 36 would be 26 points 13 rebounds five assists four blocks and two steals as a rookie I mean that’s just ridiculous in comparison LeBron James who had one of the best rookie seasons ever he averaged 21 points six boards six assist and 40 minutes per game as a rookie so it’s just wild to think of course the game has changed there’s no question about it but wama he played in 71 games there was a lot of questions about if his body would be able to hold up and it did the Spurs gradually over time increased his minutes and it didn’t take long for wemi to start making NBA history as he became the first player to record 1,000 500 plus points 250 plus blocks and 100 plus steals in a single season Mike Malone who coached the Denver Nuggets last season when they won a championship said quote he’s the future of the NBA jond green said quote I don’t know what lap he was created in but I need to go create me a son in that lab because dude is unbelievable and then LeBron James said quote he doesn’t have a ceiling he can do whatever he wants to do in his career and that’s Victor wama he should have one defensive player of the year he won rookie of the year he also shot believe at the top of my head 46 a half% on step back three so there isn’t anything wbe can’t do on a basketball court and now you get him safan Castle who’s going to be the future point of this team he can defend he of course can attack the basket he does have to work on his shooting of course but that should be the least of the Spurs concern because that is so easy to teach right especially a guy who has shown improvement from the free throw line a guy who has good mechanics I think overall he has good mechanics I also liked how the Spurs traded the eighth pick which they used on Rob Dillingham they sent him to the Timberwolves and they ended up getting the right to swap first round picks with Minnesota in the 2030 draft and they got Minnesota’s 2031 first round pick so to go out there and to get some more draft assets for the future is definitely beneficial those could be used down the line to make a big trade because you’d have to imagine that as soon as the Spurs make the plan or the playoffs free agents are going to to be dying to come to the Spurs because their best chance to win a championship is going to be with the Spurs with Victor wama on a rookie contract because he’s one of the top 20 players in basketball right now and he’s not being paid like it again because he’s a rookie so I mean what he just turned 20 years old Wy I mean he is already breaking the NBA but could you imagine this guy getting 60% more better I mean I don’t think we will ever see anything like Victor wama again but at the same time who really knows because these kids just get more athletic and bigger by the year so

  1. Tim Duncan was a year 2nd year champion, David Robinson won in his 10th year and 14th in the league.

  2. I think cp3 will be the starter for the beginning of the season, but ideally by the end of the season, castle will have absorbed what he needs to from paul to take over that starting spot, allowing paul to run the bench squad. If these guys can develop the way i anticipate(and maybe add a solid piece to bring the roster to that next level), they might fight for a playoff spot and surprise some people
