Timberwolves Sign Joe Ingles/Say Goodbye To Anderson And Morris

welcome in to another running with the Timberwolves podcast on the believe Sports Network my name is Gabe Anderson and I’m joined as always by Chris Emerson Chris how we doing we’re good just got out of a pool a little uh you know Fourth of July pre Fourth of July taking advantage of the good weather you know absolutely yeah I if you’re here in Minnesota it could be a little wet and wild tomorrow so a little rainy but but good good good that you got out there well the so the Timberwolves they made a move today actually two moves which some could say a splash yeah a little bit of a splash they sign Joe Les to a one-year contract do we know the details of the deal yet do we know the money invol I mean it’s going to have to be a vet minimum anybody that we bring in now since we’re over the cap by so much they’re all going to be accepting vet minimum so it’ll be whatever a 9year 12 year vet however much he is makes vet minimum it’s probably four and a half mil or something I don’t know right and you called it the whole time you kept saying that we’re going to get someone on a veteran minimum to come on and and fill out the rest of this roster and that’s exactly what we did I think we also signed PJ doer as well today which we’ll talk about in a little bit but first Joe Les a little bit about him didn’t play in the NBA until 2014 although he is 36 years old he’s only had one season so far where he shot below 35% from three 17 minutes a game last season shot 43% from three and I think the big upside of this is finally we have a forward that can come off the bench and hit some threes I think it’s really as simple as that I mean that’s a huge that’s his like that’s what you know you’re getting like that’s the the bread and butter you know he’s at least going to be a shooter he I mean he had stretches of his career where he was one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA um and on like and on like you know a high amount of attempts so not just like you know slim pickings type stuff but what what he’s going to bring and at least what he has I haven’t seen him in the last couple years so I’m sure at 36 he’s slowed down some but his ball movement and his passing and his like um Team defense is I mean for a long time was Elite like one of the best forwards in the game at that so even if he’s got a reduced ability to uh you know read the defense and make the right plays uh it’s going to be a huge Advantage I mean a handful of years ago you could run your entire offense through him from the wing so having a guy like that um at the small forward position where we’re dreadfully thin um is a huge pickup yeah in fact speaking of shooting the three he’s actually the Utah Jazz’s alltime leader in three points makes he actually pass Joe or John Stockton when back when he was in Utah but what does his age worry you a little bit or do you just see him playing 15 to 20 minutes a night just coming in hit a couple shots and playing with the second unit I don’t see him closing games yeah I mean unless he’s hot unless he’s hot yeah I mean it depends I mean jayen if Jaden takes another step forward this year I don’t think that he’ll be closing games I I don’t think you know Les will be closing games but um yeah he probably won’t and and he might not even get 15 to 20 but I mean if he’s given us 10 to you know 10 solid minutes where he can you know help be a play Creator he can move the ball he can hit a couple threes like that’s huge for a guy that you just got on a vet minimum like we don’t have a lot of Ros roster like minutes to be doling out to guys um but I think he’s definitely going to be some of them absolutely and you mentioned that he is a playmaker I mean he’s played 17 minutes a game last year and he still had three assists a game and I was looking at some of his highlights just on ESPN and most of his highlights aren’t him splashing a three it’s of him diming someone down in the post or finding an open quter I I think he’s gonna add some flow to our offense which is interesting to say considering that he’s 36 years old well I mean again a ball mover like I said like he knows where the ball needs to go and how to get it there is it a low pass is it a high like you said will his age be a bad thing and I mean if you’re building your roster around him yes for sure right but just like how Anthony Edwards mentioned when Nas came into the starting lineup when cat was down um his his like quick swing to the weak side from the top like his passing I guess is an easy way to say it sparked everyone else to want to move the ball more and Joe Engles is that kind of guy um for even the second unit um and then he you know he worked with Rudy forever so he’s got a good vibe with Rudy now we can have like a a side of the Court be Rudy Eng Les with Mike Connelly running the ball like that’s a deadly deadly way to work together all these guys are vets and they know what they’re doing um you’re gonna get a shot out of that every time I think the question’s GNA be watching that lineup is this the the 2024 2025 Timberwolves or this the 2022 Jazz it’s going to be that part of the court because four former jazz players including Nel Alexander Walker now under contract for the Minnesota Timberwolves and hey I mean the Jazz were a good team and what the Jazz didn’t have yes they had Donovan Mitchell but they didn’t have Anthony Edwards so you put the right nucleus around that and success will come well Carl Anthony towns I mean that’s really the that’s really the elephant in the room and those types of comparisons is well they had you know favors and we have Carl Anthony towns so you just hope that that is that trumps it dramatically and it’ll be exciting to see how that works out because I’m at the point now where I would be surprised if we move Carl Anthony towns from picking up dham like I think that answers a lot of the questions that we have or it possibly answers a lot of our huge gaps and holes that we needed to fill um with one guy so now adding Conley or adding Eng Les which is like in my opinion a superpowered um slowmo um that’s just exciting for me yeah I agree and let let’s get right into that right now obviously the other news from this week of free agency for the Timberwolves slowmo and Monte Morris out the door Monte Morris going to the Suns and then slowmo in a signning trade with the Warriors which we did get something for him we did get a second round pick back in that sign in trade and I know you’re not necessarily the biggest slow-mo Defender but your your thoughts on kind of the hole that slow-mo leaves and did we fill in enough with Joe Engles oh yeah I think we filled slow- Mo’s hole with uh Rob Dillingham to be honest with you like I don’t think I think the only value that slomo really brought to our team was a ball handler and a play Creator you know um somebody that when Anthony Edwards was out or connley was out could kind of run the offense or the offense could you know start with him at least a little bit um I mean he was okay on defense as like a bigger guy but I mean we’ve got it’s not like we need bigs that bad you know we’ve got plenty of bigs so um I think that hole was filled already and then adding adding Joe Eng Les is yeah I think he’s better than slomo to be honest with you quite a bit better I think he’s a better passer I think he’s a better everything to be honest U maybe not a defender of bigs anymore I don’t I don’t know possible it’s possible is I mean he’s never been a super aggressive Defender but just a smart Defender so we’ll see but yeah I think it’s a pretty it’s pretty great when you can get a sec like you can make one of your division Rivals like a worst team and get a second round pick from it like that’s great I mean I hope they play slowmo a lot because I don’t I don’t think he’s I don’t think he’s gonna help them too much yeah I think the Warriors Dynasty might be over in this scenario going for slowmo and getting rid of Klay Thompson that was another point I wanted to make is people are wondering because all the other teams uh in the in the same Wolves class in the Western Conference they were making moves um with with the exception I guess of Denver but like for example the Mavs they went out and got Klay Thompson they they made a move to get to get a shooter now they did get rid of two guys in Derek Jones Jr and who who was the other guy they got rid of Josh Green Josh Green yeah which might hurt them a little bit defensively but yeah I’m not I’m not huge on that Dallas move to be honest with you uh I think that I don’t think Klay Thomas’s has has much if anything left and I know he definitely doesn’t have much left on defense as a small forward so if you have a if you have a team out there with Clay Kyrie and Luca as your perimeter Defenders yeah thank you like I’m not worried about that at all um the Clippers made some moves they brought in uh Michael Uh Kevin Porter Jr who you know had a 50 g a 50 point like 12 assist game under his belt and when he was like you know 20 years old so like definitely a talent um yeah there’s there’s people making moves but let not sell the Dillingham you know move short either I mean that’s a very dramatic and that’s what I was gonna say the Wolves could have gone out and got someone on like a $4 million deal like Russell Westbrook but they saw Dillingham in the draft and they saw an opportunity to not only not only get a stop gap which is more of the Joe that’s what they kind of did with the Joe Engles this is kind of a one-year experiment see if it works but if Rob Dillingham works we could have him from now into ant’s future they could be the back court of the future here in Minnesota and that’s what I love what Tim connley is doing like someone said Ant-Man and Rob in love it as in Rob Dillingham love it um yeah I mean Monte moris G was interesting too you mentioned him because he signed the same veteran minimum deal that we were that we supposed supposely offered him um but because we had Dillingham and you know and we didn’t play Morris a lot you know Morris didn’t see any minutes which I mean it’s crazy when there’s a quality veteran that turns your your team down because he’s like well you just got too much talent so right like you said we we’ve turned a leaf with how this team is looked at and Joe Engles is like a guy that I think last year was making1 Million do you know he’s always been a pretty well-compensated player and for him to to choose us for a veteran minimum kind of tells you where we’re at now Joe Engles obviously has played with a couple teams he’s played with Utah Milwaukee not the year they won the championship and they all he also played with the magic last year but how about the fact that he’s coming to Minnesota to do some ring chasing when was the last time we could say that about a veteran I love it and I mean and that’s something that Tim connell’s building like when we talk about GMS in the in the NBA like everyone wants to talk about Denny Ang Sam pry and they do great things they’re definitely good at um accumulating draft picks and stuff like that but I mean look at look at how Tim Conley can can change he doesn’t have any draft picks like those two guys I mentioned have you know a 100 draft picks but no players with those Tim Connelly the day that he gets allowed to trade a future first he flips that for the number eight pick like when you can turn draft picks into actual quality players I mean assuming inham will be quality that’s what I look for in a GM and that’s what I’m sure you know players look for when they’re looking for a team that’s trying to compete is we’re not interested in playing for the team that’s trying to stockpile draft picks and you know and stuff like that we’re trying to play for a team who’s you know trying to find that last piece to win a title right it’s a completely different mind shift than where we were just even a couple years ago when we drafted Anthony Edwards and I gotta mention this comment from Chris Armstead our former our Azie very excited that he that an Azie is on the team now and he has this comment as well he loves Joey but he is the slowest player he’s ever seen he is a slow player yes but so was slmo well and I think the last part of what Chris said there is important he watched him at 16 17 years old and he wasn’t a whole lot quicker back then so I mean this dude has been effective at that speed like I really think when you said does it matter when he’s 38 or 36 and um you know with a guy like Joe Engles it doesn’t matter a ton kind of like it won’t matter a ton for a guy like Luca donic because they’re not beating you with extreme athleticism right whereas you know if you had a 36 year old you know Zion Williamson or something like that that we were picking up I might be like GH you know like he’s you know because he can’t I guarantee Zion won’t be in the league at 36 I know I know I know I know but I’m just saying yeah for sure for sure where so like if you’re built strictly on speed or something like that like that’s going to leave you like John Wall’s having trouble being in the league because you know sometimes you once those couple gears leave you and speed wise if that’s what you rely on you’re dead meat but Engles is so smart so I mean he’s really gonna look a lot like slow-mo out there except for when the ball kicks to him the B that’s gonna go in you know that three-pointer is going to go in yeah and Joe Eng Les if we’re worried at all about injury bug or anything like that he did play 68 games last year which is I I would say if we can get 68 games out of Joe Les I would say that’s a pretty that that’s a pretty good deal for the Timberwolves I would say for that just considering because I mean let’s be honest Mike connley he’s gonna need some games where he’s down he’s gonna miss some games I think the Wolves other than Carl Anthony towns with his injuries I think and obviously two year last year going into the playoffs with Nas and Jaden punching a wall I think other than that the injury bug has been pretty good for the Timberwolves so far and really the the games that like Conley has missed has really just been pre precautionary yeah strategic so and I to be honest as much as I hate load management and stuff I think KN on wood um I think we got to do that next year maybe a little with Anthony Edwards and maybe even not maybe even NZ Reed I think he’s playing for um the Bahamas or something like that maybe um I don’t know if they’re going to make the Olympics but Anthony Edwards has been you know one of the top minutes guys we went into the playoffs last year he played on the Olympic or on the USA team last year this year we go deep into the playoffs and now he’s playing on the Olympic team like that’s a lot of basketball non-stop on on a kid I get it he’s a young body but um yeah injury is is the great equalizer in the NBA like you can go from a number one seed to out of the playoffs in in a short bit of time with a with a bad ankle turn and that’s why it’s so interesting the Boston Celtics I think they’re that good because they sustained an injury to one of their top players porzingis and still won the championship easily that’s why I think the Boston Celtics are that good but yeah absolutely if the Timberwolves are going to make a run the injury bug is going to be on their side now do you think that Monte I think that Monte Morris is gonna get some run in Phoenix because they don’t have much coming off the bench they are kind of in cap hell kind of like the Timberwolves are right now I I think that some fan like Monte Morris will have that game where he hits like five threes and he has like 18 points on an let’s say on a game where Durant doesn’t play or Beal doesn’t play or something like that and there’ll be tons of wolves fans that’ll be saying oh no why did we let go of him but come on Monte wasn’t going to be you you saw it in the playoffs Monte had nothing to do for the wolves and he was not going to be a contributor in the playoffs for the Wolves going forward yeah I mean he was coming off an injury um so he was kind of he was out of shape and he wasn’t right up but here’s the deal we didn’t let Monte Morris go he chose to leave us like we we would have brought him back and he chose to go there because they they you know they’re going to have him better opportunity good for him you know and he’s probably going to be quite a bit better next year than he was I think so too but guess what that’s fine we didn’t have a lot of minutes for him anyways you know like we’ve got a stacked troster now like we’ve got a top five team in the NBA legitimately um you know we’re not going to cry over spill Monte Morris milk you know right and one more guy that we should mention which we’ll mention PJ doer in a second I don’t honestly I don’t have much to say about PJ doer but we’ll get to in a second we did resign Luca gar to a two-year contract which I mean sure why not I mean he gets in a lot of the Iowa fans I’m sure there’s a lot of Iowa appeal of of people coming down to the games to see not only Anthony Edwards but their their their guy Luca Garza so I I like the signing I don’t think it costs us that much either so do you see Luca Garza getting much run with this team or wh why do you think he signed the deal do do do you think he Minds doing this whole g-league uh NBA thing I I don’t know if he Minds it well yeah he seems to kind of have a Vibe going with it you know where he’s kind of built his own Aura which is probably something that you know a third Center in the NBA doesn’t have a following very often and like uh like when he comes in there’s like a spirit behind him so that’s got to feel good just as a human being um that’s playing and playing for peanuts uh speaking minutes wise a game um I think the signing on the Timberwolves part is is just the kind of signing that you do if you’re a good organization the same thing we did with Pat Beverly knowing that we were going to trade Pat Beverly we signed him to you know a one-year deal for 13 million that we knew we weren’t going to pay him that but it was just to help the trade and you help this veteran you give him another $13 million contract just like Luca here he’s been banging for us like working hard up and down from Iowa he deserved to be not on a two-way contract he deserved a guaranteed full-time NBA contract even if he doesn’t really play he’s earned it through the last couple years of hard work and play for us that you know as an organization you got to honor that and give that guy you know give it to him um I’m guessing there’s not a lot of uh you know free agent need for a third Center like so many people are drafting you know some 19-year-old kid to give him a shot like um he’s kind of probably with us or with nobody so I’m happy that we locked him in I don’t know I now the last team he played for was for example the did Detroit Pistons I think and he got cut by the Pistons yeah he did get cut by the Pistons but I think a bad team like maybe the Charlotte Hornets who are starting to rebuild or the Detroit Pistons I think someone would have given them a shot I really do not necessarily the start but maybe some spot minutes who knows what’s going to go down in Portland maybe some spot minutes there they they don’t have too many big guys if they unless they hold on to DeAndre Aon but I don’t know I think he might have had an opportunity to play elsewhere but to his credit maybe he just likes it here maybe he’s a Midwest guy may maybe he just likes the culture here and wants to be part of something bigger and who knows someone goes down like not knock on wood like you said but Nas gets hurt cat gets hurt he could see some spot minutes here and there he could and what I love about him is he’s a guy that knows what he does well and the moment he comes in a game if the ball swings to him he’s going to shoot it you know like he’s an instant impact type guy some people come in and their tentative and they don’t really know how to fit in the role of the of the situation and he isn’t that like he knows exactly what to do he’s going to the block he’s got his hand up he’s gonna put somebody in the in the spin cycle down there um you know put the slippery eel or whatever you know Kevin mccale used to call it post moves um or he’s going to shoot that three he’s going to work hard on the glass and then he’s going to sit down when it’s when he when he’s pulled off the court so um hardworking guy yeah I love that as a pickup and again with Carl Anthony towns and Rudy’s no spring chicken like right big yeah it’s good to have a big guy too so I’m glad it is and I want to get to Chris’s comment as well is Les the first Aussie to play for the Wolves since Nathan Joi and I think it might be I I was looking at simber wolves who played or who were from Australia and there’s one I I want to know if you can name it if you can name the other guy Shane heel there’s Shane heel for sure well name an starts with an L um was it the dude with long hair um uh armston was his last name or something Lou aminon I don’t know if he was from Australia well he looked like he was from Australia that’s how I know that no he’s Amer Amer he’s American the guy that the guy that I’m thinking of is Luke Longley oh well yeah that’s from way back that was before um yeah before Nathan jwai oh yeah Luke Longley was famously a timberwolf yeah he was uh he was a big he was a big deal for Australia and I think he still is I’m pretty sure we never had bogot I don’t think we ever had bogot we never had Patty Mills we had Shane heel who was uh he played for the team Australia and he was a bomber like a three-point shooter in the Olympics and we kind of got excited for that um I think we might have had another Countryman that was a guard um too we’ve we’ve had a couple that we tried but um none of really panned out as well as Les I mean Engles is probably I mean short of bogot he might be the most decorated Australian to ever play in the NBA yeah I would agree yeah like you said Shane heel played one year for the Minnesota Timberwolves 96 through 97 is there a guy that his name started with a G too like some guard or no I I I not that I can find I I can’t find anybody but hey we’ll we’ll take him we’re a very uh national team now Rudy goar we got Joe Eng Les for sure uh nikelle Alexander Walker’s from Canada so it’s not just it’s it’s not just American teams right now so overall what would you give actually let’s talk anything on PJ doer or no so the little thing I know about doers I believe he was on the the Nuggets when they were making their kind of their runs and I know that he was kind of um after he played for them I believe he was kind of a a slightly sought after free agent for a little bit as like a defensive hustle um cutting kind of wing you know like he’s gonna D you up he’s gonna cut he’s gonna play hard um just a solid guy to have you know I don’t think you’re going to be blown out of the water by him but I think he is a hard worker from everything that I remember um kind of one of those effort type guys which if you’re filling out the roster you know and these are guys you’re going to practice against like some of this is important for practice players you know like are you gonna make my guys work in practice so um I think doer is that type of guy so yeah I mean a fine pick for the second to last seat on the bench yeah I mean that’s fine he can he could sit there and and uh point at people when they dunk so yeah but and when he comes in he’s not going to be the guy who’s going to jack up threes or try to get his own or something like that he knows his role he’s going to D up he’s going to hustle he’s going to move the ball so yeah I think it’s a solid pickup for connley and somebody that he’s familiar with I I can’t wait to see him play against like macabi the the israelian team this year do you remember that game last year where we played that israelian team yeah yeah we’re gonna that was fun I was there like you got to sit really close and got to see I think Luca went for like 40 and and uh former NBA legend I’ll say Dwayne bacon was on the Israeli team yeah Legend’s a tough word for Dwayne bacon but uh we’ll take it yeah we’ll take it absolutely so this is the running with the Timberwolves podcast on the believe Sports Network Chris thanks so much for being here you know I’m really happy with the way this offseason’s gone I mean we’re excited there’s going to be some big things coming next year we’ve improved our team dramatically I think so I think so too I think so too and this is the running with the Timberwolves podcast on the believe Sports Network make sure to like share and subscribe 1. Great job boys. Garza has a lot of versatility. Let’s just say one of our big men go down. Remember what he did against the joker and the Nuggets, he was respectable. He has earned his spot because of his talent. Given the opportunity, I think he will accelerate. Shannon JR will help relieve Edwards and give him some rest time. Joe E can also play the 3-4 and help. The main thing is our bench has gotten a lot better now. We needed a spark on offense being right in the middle talent wise in the NBA. The roster is starting to fill out pretty nice. 👍

  2. Morris/Mclaughlin/Milton were worthless as backup point guards last year. Dillingham is probably an improvement on all of them.

Kyle Anderson was important due to lack of backup point guard… If Dillingham succeeds it'd be way better to have a guy like Ingles who is a far better catch and shoot 3 point shooter

  3. The Utah Jazz getting old. Last year was there best chance via cap space and depth. You can safely bet the Utah Wolves to go under their win total and even look at odds to miss playoffs.

  4. Great signing now we have a guy who hasn’t played a full season in 5 years! Come off the bench? He never comes off the bench in street clothes! This guy is so washed!
