Have the Lauri Markkanen trade talks stalled? Are the Utah Jazz “uncommitted” to moving Lauri

are the Lowry marketing trade talks done stalled or just on Hiatus they would follow the script of Danny a in his career if they are next unlocked on Jazz you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the to Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day how are you I am David lock radio voice of the Utah Jazz Jazz MBA Insider on today’s locked on Jazz are the Lowry marketing trade talk stall done over or is this just following the Danny a script that he’s followed throughout his career we’ll talk about that summer league is here two major matchups tonight for the Utah Jazz against the Memphis Grizzlies in summer league at Delta Center and what do we want to see from the seven High prominent maybe even eight maybe even nine highly prominent players at the Jazz of on their summer league roster that we want to see and what does the latest moves around the NBA tell us a little bit about John Collins Jordan Clarkson and their role with the Utah Jazz plus what else is happening in the NBA it’s a full docket on a Monday I’m David lock radio voice of the Utah Jazz jazznba Insider and this is locked on Jazz it’s your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz can you Insight expertise geeky numbers and hopefully making it way better to be a jazz fan each and every day thank you so much for making lockdown Jazz your first listen of the day we are free and available on all podcasting apps we’re also on YouTube please subscribe or follow us on both thumbs up if you like the fact that l Mar and has not been dealt yet for us if you’re listening on watching on YouTube uh thank you very much to making lockdown Jazz your first listening thanks to all of the every dayers out there all right so the latest stories on the low remarket and trade fromont and I’m really just assimilating news from other people is first Tony Jones went on 957 the game in San Francisco the Athletics Tony Jones and said that the Jazz have a sub substantial package on the from the Golden State Warriors for Lowry Mark Sacramento reportedly from Anthony Slater of the athletic heavily pursued Lowry marinin prior to D rozan gave quote gave the Jazz a deadline and the Jazz didn’t meet it and sources around the league have grown skeptical that Utah will even move marketing quote the Kings went hard after Utah loud remark in it earlier in the week protecting Keegan Murray in the discussions but putting on the table that they believed was a substantial enough pick based offer Slater wrote but they put the deadline to the side of the deal needing an answer quickly concering the urgency of the market Utah didn’t meet it there’s growing skepticism League wide the Jazz executive Danny Angel actually move on any marketing deal so the Kings then went to D rozan okay so let’s walk through this for a second um uh the the two things I would say here are one let’s go to Danny Ang’s history as a general manager as much as his history of a general manager is and and and now president higher title but as a decision maker as much as the signature of Danny A’s career has been the incredible trades for Kevin Garnett and for Ray Allen and for Jason Tatum which led to the uh Jaylen Brown draft pick the other has been his willingness to walk from deals if you go back to his time in Boston he was often criticized for this incorrectly now for not making the deal for Jimmy Butler not making a deal for Paul George not making a deal at trade deadlines not making deals at uh at the draft largely because he was never willing to trade either Jason Tatum or Jaylen brown or the picks that be Jason Tatum or Jaylen Brown that is very clear that Danny a has certain things he values and believes and are and he doesn’t waver on that the second thing that I would say here and this isn’t entirely the case because Sacramento is now probably off the market is that there aren’t a lot of things that are going to shift from July 8th today to September 1st or in the case of the Jazz with Lowry in August when they sign the hopefully sign an extension that make Danny have to move now that might not be totally true if Sacramento is off the market now because they just signed to Rosen instead of L and they and therefore Sacramento is now off the market and not a player for Lowry now you know you can decide if they are not giving you Keegan Murray you may just not have been interested in anything Sacramento was doing anyway and unless they were going to give you Keegan Murray you weren’t interested and so it just didn’t matter what Sacramento was doing but for the most part if you think about some of the teams have been mentioned with Lowry I’m not sure a lot changes between now now and August other than angst from the other side that maybe they have to go into the season now I’ll tell you what I I’m not sure that I think Golden State’s worse than they were a year ago like I know Golden State just lost Klay Thompson but I’m not entirely sure that the collection of players that golden state has added aren’t better than Klay Thompson the Kyle Anderson De Anthony Melton um and they had a third one the other day I thought it was pretty good which is totally escaping me right now um I actually kind of looked at their roster the other day and thought to myself yeah well maybe that’s actually a better team than what they had oh buddy heel buddy heels something’s up with Buddy heel that everybody get get him and wants to trade him or doesn’t keep him but like they have some depth now with DeAnthony Melton buddy hee Kyle Anderson that they didn’t have before um so I’m not sure that I actually think the Warriors are worse than I’m not sure that they are enough to like break through the top five or six in the west which is where they would want to be despite and need to be Steph curing 36 so I think that pressure is still considerably on them if nothing else it may mean that they actually have the freedom to make a deal now so that’s where I think we sit on Lowry is that on one level this matches Danny A’s track record which is yeah like I’m I’m willing to make a deal if it matches what I want and I’m perfectly willing to keep my powder dry if I think my assets are worth more and in case of Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum that was future assets that weren’t find for most of it it was trading those picks before those picks came around and everyone couldn’t understand why Boston wouldn’t make those trades and it turned out that Danny was right so we’ll see Tony Jones also reported that jazzer in lock step with Lowry Markin and that everybody’s communicating and all is good let’s certainly hope that is true um I think that’s a key part of this is like is Lowry able to handle being dangled out there in the news every single day and not have it tarnish his experience I mean the number one rule of management is never allow your employees to think about leaving or give your employees any feeling that they might not be wanted because the minute they think about going somewhere else it’s better than what they’re doing now it’s guaranteed that’s just a great rule if you’re running a company never ever allow your employee to consider leaving to somewhere else if you want to keep them because the minute they start to consider somewhere else and think about somewhere else the other place will seem better than what they have guaranteed so that’s the that’s the risk we’re playing here it’s what the money’s for but it’s still the risk of what we’re playing here with Lowry Market summer league is here to Mary matchups Walker Kessler versus Zack Edy what can Walker do here and Taylor Hendricks versus GG Jackson tonight 7:00 on Radio and on TV for you plus plus we’ll talk about it next coming up as we continue here on thanks so much for making locked on Jazz your first listen of the day locked on NBA is available for you all summer long every single day 30 minutes or more 30 minutes to recap the entire day all the deals everything that’s taking place in the NBA go to lockon NBA for your second listen today and subscribe on YouTube or on all your podcast apps all right summer league is here and the headliner and gonna grab everyone’s attention and probably give Craig bjack and thorl Bailey some pretty good TV ratings tonight on NBA TV as well as on K Jazz and maybe even Jazz plus is Zach e against Walker Kessler so this is interesting because this is Walker you know this goes back to Walker just having not played a ton of guys that are a lot bigger than he is and he’s going to play a guy who’s much bigger than he is Jack Zack is much much bigger than Walker and so can Walker have some sort of agility and movement and Zach runs pretty well the first thing is just can Walker use can Walker out run him can Walker use agility can Walker use some movement to be able to handle e because Ed’s probably going to be physically a little bit able to overpower Walker like if Edie pins Walker under the glass I’m not under the rim I’m not going to be stunned or freak out about it Ed’s Ed’s that big it’ be a good sign if Edy can you know a lot of this has to do with Ed Edy might be the single most important rookie in all of the NBA this year fact I can’t look at any other rookie who I really think is going to impact wins and losses this year more than Zack Edy could and actually impact of the playoff race like when I look at you know Denver’s not going to have a rookie that I think is going to really matter uh if somebody does it’ be great for them because they’re short team players right but I don’t think Dallas is can have a rookie that matters though Lively was the guy last year Edy would be the guy this year from Memphis that I think impacts the playoff race the standings things that really really matter if he’s good if they can get 20 to 25 minutes out of him Memphis could be really really good and they probably can get 20 to 25 minutes we’ll see this will be this will be an interesting game just to watch just is the speed of the game too much for Zack Eed the people who did not like Edy thought he couldn’t move well enough and the speed would be too much for this would be a good this will be a good test tonight uh for Zack Ed for Walker what I don’t last year at this point we said we got in love with the three-point shot and the outside shooting and it really follows the pattern to me of what we see from first year to second year and second year to third year here here’s the pattern that I’ve seen over my career covering this league which is now if you look at the wrinkles on my face you can tell is over 30 years um so what happens is a player first of all what Collier hen Collier um Williams filipowski are all dealing with Edy is absurd they come out of they come out of their uh the minute they’re done with their college season they immediately go to some agency or somewhere in case of Cody Williams it was e uh whatever three E3 not E3 uh the thing in Santa Barbara and um they start working out then they start traveling all across the country for draft workouts and interviews and combines and then they get drafted and then they immediately ship to another city and at this point they have now been running for about four months three months straight with no Gap no break and are completely the coyote and the Road Runner cartoon so you know if they play well that’s great but this is the first time they’ll have a semblance of normaly it’ll be a basketball game on a court for most of them will be three months since they’ve played for Ed will be the first time since he’s played since the national championship game but for the other guys it’s a little longer um all right so that’s the first thing here’s the pattern that happens the first year they get in the league they have no idea what’s happening they get their ass kicked in a bunch of areas and then what they do is they think they’re so good because they were great their whole lives and they were drafted is they go in the off season with their trainers and they work on all the things where they got their ass kicked okay they work on all those things and the as they are working on those things they come back the next year and they still get it handed to them in those areas usually um because what happens is actually the league is so brilliant and so great and it’s the 300 best players in the world and it’s really hard to be one of the 300 best players in the world that what happens is you suddenly have to find you have to find the three or four things you do well and just do those in this league and what they actually are still trying to do between the first and second year is not only do 10 things well but add on to it so in the case of Walker what we saw last year was a whole workout plan that added his three and his mid-range jumper and all the stuff off the bounce and all this and it’s just not going to happen for Walker in the NBA at a regular level it might develop over time but it’s not likely Walker needs to be a slicer and a cutter and playing out of the dunker spot and stronger when he catches and more powerful at the rim and defensively be a complete Menace and that’s what he’s going to be gr those are the three things he is going to be one of the best Rim defenders in the NBA one of the best shot Pluckers one of the best shot deter he’s going to be a slicer off the Baseline a slicer from the top he’s going to be a catcher and a finisher at The Rim those are the things Walker needs to do everything else unlikely or minimal not going to dictate his future earnings so instead as is the case I’m not criticizing anyone this is how it always works instead between year one and year two you try to expand your game and get bigger and bigger and get better all it never happens never happens n almost never so now I want to see Walker defend the rim and rebound and be big defensively and slice and cut and catch and finish that’s it less is more that’s where we now I suspect that Taylor Hendricks who’s such a piece of clay has done the exact same thing that he’s gone and add tried to add to a bunch and I do want to see some ball handling offensive skills develop by the Taylor Hendricks or else he becomes Robert cumington so we do need to see some development and adding of skills but in the case of Walker those skills are catching finishing strong around the basket those kind of skills maybe a little jump hook here or there something minimal around the basket when he gets caught on a mismatch being able to take advantage of a smaller guy yeah those kind of things rolling on the rolling on the pick a roll self-creation long catch and shoot probably not I know they’re super fun but they’re probably not so let’s watch them tonight it’s a gonna be a battle between he and Zach Edy physical manh Big Time match up assuming that everybody plays Zach’s been in Canadian national Camp Walker’s a third-year veteran there is obviously a chance that they don’t match up but assuming that they do the other matchup that’s really really interesting here is Taylor Hendricks and GG Jackson because they’re super similar they’re both crazy young and GG Jackson slipped to the second round but his body’s not to the 45th pick of that draft his body’s not crazy different he’s 69 210 and he played a ton late in the year and while he was playing late in the year on a really beat up Memphis team he actually took advantage of it in a pretty big time fashion in March he played 32 minutes night in in April he played 34 minutes night and he averaged about 19 points a game for the final 22 games of the year he averaged 18 points a game in the final 25 games post All-Star break he did not shoot it great he just averaged a lot of points he shot 41% from the field and 33% from three Taylor did not have that same kind of impact on games just demonstrative impact efficient or inefficient GG Jackson certainly did um and it will be interesting to see whether what Taylor brings to the table today Taylor a since Taylor one after the Kelly oen trade Taylor averaged about nine points and six rebounds but he shot 47% from the field and he shot uh 39% from three which is super exciting and now it just needs to have a little bit more to his game so yes we want to see some offensive development but these two guys are really really similar Taylor was the KN pick Hendrick or G Jackson was the 53rd or 35th or whatever I said just Lexi doesn’t kill it just confuses it’s going to be very interesting to see how those two kind of how that works together um if you go back to Hendrick’s final 16 games he played 27 minutes shot 48% from the field 44% from three on four attempts a game and shot and scored 10 points a game that’s pretty exciting now can he add a little bit of offensive uh skill to his game and uh in tonight’s matchup we begin to begin to see that development out of him in some capacity all right what do we want to see from Cody Williams Isaiah Kyle Kyle Isaiah CER or Kyle filipowski also Bryce Sensa should be mentioned in here too I will do that next as we continue on betterhelp hp.com lockon NBA Jazz Thunder or Jazz Grizzlies tonight at 7 Thunder and Sixers tonight at 5 summer league tickets are available for you um all right the Summer League match up today by the way game on TV NBA TV I believe Jazz Plus kjzz on radio with Ron and I as well Tim Lomi and on the final day um so join us have fun with us all right uh Isaiah CER Cody Williams Kyle filipowski what do I want to see you want my truth and I want to go to keante because they have some things I want to say ke so let’s start with the rookies just play like we can have these summer league moments where Donovan was unbelievable and we realize we have something and we can all hope for that and I think Isaiah Ker’s got a chance to be dominant in this setting because he’s got such an incredible first step and he can finish at the rim and if he finishes at The Rim he could have some huge Summer League numbers and you go to the free throw line a lot I got to be honest with you I just go back on the summer league to Josh Shelby and Damen Lillard and Damen Lillard and Josh Shelby were the co- players of the ye of the summer league in Vegas together one’s going to the Hall of Fame one played like five NBA games I just love it I love summer league can’t I’m excited to be here I’m trying to figure out how to get down to Vegas to watch a few games with that said it’s the only sample size we have we’re going to talk about it all next two weeks I think you can really miss both directions on this it’s not an NBA game it’s not against NBA Talent when Kesler plays Ed I think it’s interesting when GG Jackson plays Hendrick I think it’s pretty interesting if guys play hard I think it’s interesting if someone’s terrible Trey young they turned out to be okay so I would hesitate first on a lot of judgment on our guys like take Isaiah ker for example from what I’ve seen out Isaiah ker he has this unbelievable First Step he has no floater game none not that I saw I could be wrong but I’ve seen very little I don’t expect him to suddenly have it he’s GNA have to learn it it’s going to probably take a year or two or three to add to his game I don’t see a pull-up jumper at any point in isaia colar game I don’t expect to see it here now if I do suddenly there’s a total floater game and there’s think that suddenly that you see something you’ve never seen before um that would be amazing and show you a sign of development or skills that weren’t available so maybe that’s what I would tell you to watch is there something and this assumes you’ve actually watched them in Duke Colorado and USC that shows up that we didn’t know they had because they’re in an NBA setting instead of a college setting that would be kind of the thing if we suddenly see a wiggle out of Cody Williams on a dribble drive I’ll be like whoa we didn’t see that in college if we see a floater out of Isaiah ker I would like didn’t see that the more Philip palsky can drive the basket without spinning I’m super concerned about his spin move I just don’t think it translates um that would be great um I think filipowski switching defensively is something I want to watch because I’m neg I’m a little cautious on whether I think he’s gonna be able to play a drop big in the NBA and I thought he switched pretty well against Baylor in the game I watched so that would be something I’m keeping an eye on in regards to filipowski but they’re little things like that they’re not an overall like I mean frankly Keon last year had a pretty good summer league right like he went to Vegas he was first team all summer league he kind of tore up a little bit if I remember 22 points and six assists and then he had the second lowest field goal percentage of any player in the NBA other than scoot Henderson like so I think it’s kind of sometimes hard to say like that these things play together all right in regards to keante I want to see little things I want to see him play really hard I think he can play harder than he did last year and I don’t this is I think Cody Williams can play way harder than he in Colorado like I think these guys are so good that they’ve not had to play that hard and then they get in the situation um uh second question is on that with keante is I would like to see like some kind of Veteran Moxy leadership tightness to his game um you know High turnover loose last year fine I don’t mind turnovers at all as a rookie but in this setting where you’re probably the best player on the floor in every single game can you curtail that a little bit and the third thing that just kind of in regards to ke like the ball’s got to start going in at some point right because if you go back to Summer League last year the shooting percentage numbers weren’t very good and if you go back to Baylor they weren’t very good and if you go back to last year they weren’t very good so we see it we see the nine threes in the game we see the off the bounce three we see all these various skills and it’s all there there’s no question how incredibly talented he is and can be but we need the ball to start going in now is that now probably not like it probably like doesn’t have to be in this you know if he shoots 38% in summer league am I freaking out it’s not ideal um but it’s not I wouldn’t freak out right um you know the fact that his off the bounce three last year he was able to get three of them off and he hit 34 35% my gosh if he gets that to 3 6 or 37 38% that’s pretty awesome you know he’s really right on the cusp of all sorts of really dramatic things that would make him very very good um for Bryce sensah like Keon’s catch and shoot last year was 32% there’s zero chance at staying that low there’s just zero chance for Bryce sensah I would say this is gets a he he’s got to go through a transition in his game where he was able to bully players in college and you can’t bully players in the NBA and so he’s got to figure out how to use his stuff in that and then I just think he needs confidence to put the ball in the basket the the biggest takeaway I have last year from Bryce sensah was he and I were talking might have been in Oklahoma City late in the year if that makes sense if we played them late in the year and we were walking out of the gym and I was holding a conversation with him about kind of the bullying thing just where physical contact works and doesn’t work and D involv and I didn’t bring up he was not shooting well at the time and I didn’t bring it up or even mention it or even want to mention it to him at any point and he kept bringing it up like my shot’s going to fall I’m like yeah I know like you’re a good shooter it’s gonna fall and move to the next he kept bringing it up so it it’s clear to me that it was really bothering him and so to me that’s a sign that he just needs to kind of get his shot back he’s a really good shooter he’s one of the best Shooters coming out of college there’s no reason why that wouldn’t stay other than just the NBA World got to him last year and I think he’ll be more comfortable I think we’ll see Bryce really shoot it well and then we’ll begin to see him develop into the offensive player that he can become all right that is locked on Jazz today summer league is going to be super fun I had a bunch of NBA notes for you about Demar de Roan’s deal and what it means and cison and Clarkson and things like that but we’ll get them to tomorrow we’ve got all week we’re jam-packed thanks so much for taking the time with me today and getting to this point of the show you’re awesome thank you for being in every day we appreciate you we now send you the first ever National Sports channel locked on sports today also check out big six in 60

According to reports with sizeable deals in place the Utah Jazz seem “uncommitted” to deal Lauri Markkanen. David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA insider looks at the reports and pieces together what is taking place as well as seeing how this matches Danny Ainge’s history as a decision maker.

The Salt Lake Summer League is here. A big match up tonight with Walker Kessler v. Zach Edey and an interesting match-up of Taylor Hendricks and GG Jackson.

Locke looks at what to expect from Kessler, Keyonte George, Bryce Sensabaugh, Cody Williams, Isaiah Collier and Kyle Filpowski

  1. Kessler does not want to become an intimidator. He has to have some F*** You in him. He does not appear to have the Quiones to be what he needs to be and that is why the Jazz are willing to move on from him. Kessler if you do not become that person, expect a 5-7 year career and thenn spend the rest of your career in Europe.

  2. Love your podcasts! Whenever I hear "trade rumors" I always wait till I hear it from You. My only complaint is when your calling the games on the radio you never say what the score is and how much time is left.

  3. I don’t understand why they want to trade Lauri he is very young and in two years the young players they just draft they will good enough for them to be a very good team with kauri.
