we’re going to be talking about the recent Spurs moves Devonte Graham is no longer with the Spurs Harrison Barnes is now part of the silver and black for now maybe we’ll talk about that in a bit then we’re going to talk about Lori market and what is the latest how does the moves that the Spurs make maybe set up a deal for marketing and then hey real quick we’re going to see how the rookies did in their summer league debut but with so much to talk about we’re going to just have them bring the whole entire freaking show let going to bring in our guest he is James pler of San Antonio sports star rocking the purple and light blue Charlotte Hornet colors what’s going on uh kind of it’s a blank hat that I got when I was at the concert last week you know I can never Rock trucker hats man I can’t right you got extra in tonight yeah tonight we’ll be uh breaking down everything we’re breaking down here plus more uh gaking a walking boot over the Fourth of July holiday weekend so it’s gonna be a fun show tonight all right uh we’ll talk about the whole San Antonio sports star in just a few minutes uh we always LED James brag about what’s going on in his neck of the wood but first up you know what Pledger the Spurs made some moves you know no surprise start with Devonte Graham at you know the riding was on the wall you know he was going to be gone you know we get that but then the Spurs get involved with three-way deal that Nets the Spurs Harrison Barnes for now maybe uh more draft Capital some cash huh James these are interesting moves aren’t they uh no and and everything’s got to happen in a certain order right just because of the way salaries work we we saw that that Klay Thompson deal over the weekend ended up turning into a six team deal to make it work uh first one in NBA history so there is a certain order in which these deals kind of have to go down um Devonte Graham one of the first dominoes that had to fall which is why you saw them push back that date on the vesting of his contract him whether they needed to wave him or not to guarantee the money they found a Suitor to take him which ends up clearing all of that space off their book just attaching a second round pick to it to Charlotte to be able to open up enough space to get in on this Sacramento deal which sends Demar de rozan to the kings in return you get a pretty good role player in Harrison bars and you also get another 2031 pick is that by my count three pick swaps in 2031 with the Mavericks uh Kings and now timberwol so you only get to swap with one of those teams if I’m mistake not mistaken right right like you don’t get all three of their picks you only get to swap with one of them knowing the Spurs they’ll figure something out where they better have flip all of them somehow some way you know but you know as look I know I say for now with Harrison Barnes we’ll explain why that what we mean by that in just a few minutes but if the if he does stick with a roster you know a good solid move Spurs veteran presence you know they they got him on board him and Chris Paul going to bring that veteran punch on the court off the court locker room on the road etc etc yay Spurs you know he had a pretty good season with the Kings double figure scoring and everything he’s going to slide in very nicely again if he sticks around more on that in few seconds but you know Pledger if as of this recording Spurs could probably make some noise now a little bit now it’s you they might be able to do some things in the west yeah I mean the the roster is currently constructed I know and I saw this all weekend A lot of people were very excited about the Harrison Barnes Edition and you should be Harrison Barnes is a great piece to a potential playoff team uh he’s got champion ship experience he shoots 40% from three damn near 39% um averages double figures and can play really good defense on the wing so uh the lineup is better with Chris Paul and de Vel and Harrison Barnes and Jeremy soan and Victor wanyama as your starting five and then having a group of Trey Jones and and castle and K the bench like the it’s a really really good lineup does it move the needle in the Western Conference maybe kind of kicks it that doesn’t smash it you’re not a bottom three team anymore yeah you’re not but at the same time there’s not a whole lot of fallof in the west the one team I’d say that’s falling off is the Clippers and other than that we all think that the number one seed got better with the addition of Alex Caruso right y y um I we with John Morant and jiren Jackson Jr healthy we all think uh team that was a two seed a couple of years ago in Memphis is going to go back up right um The Warriors manag to maintain even after losing Klay Thompson I think the additions of of Malik Monk and really good right uh that like they’re still a really good team the Lakers or the Lakers they’ll be fighting somewhere at the bottom for one of those of course because bronnie pushes the needle right James I mean that that’s it man I mean playoffs here we come they got bronny um I would go for senior but that that is the reason that they’ll be in the hunt but sure bronnie Brony might be the reason that senior is there so sure bronnie moves the needle and the fact that LeBron James is still there right but you know you know uh about the only I I I think what you’re going to see next year from the Spurs if they stay intact as of this recording um you know they don’t go in a 10 plus losing skid like we saw last year uh you know they don’t get troun left and right I think they’re very compet more competitive when they were um throughout the entire last season uh probably you’re they’re not going to be a team where an opposing team can Circle and say well there’s our slump Buster or well that’s where we’re going to bring this guy back back from injury this is a team that opposing teams are going to have to really focus on and try to get W’s and I think the spur is going to be a lot better the only other downside I can think of is and James I know you’re you’re gonna really bring this up in the next segment but it maybe just hurts their their own draft pick positioning you know we’ll talk about ATL in a bit Yeah I it just hurt their own that’s part of it but you know I look at the west and you know how good it is and yeah you’ve gotten better maybe you’re like in the 35 win range all of a sudden the the only caveat to that is we saw the strides that Victor wanyama took at the end of the season and how dominant he was despite no Bol no keld and no Jer absolutely um and we’ve seen throughout the Olympics so far he still looks like he’s improving oh yeah which to be expected but you know leaps and boun just getting better and better the better he is by the start of next year and if Devon vasel takes a similar Leap Forward or not even similar but just a leap of sorts from where he was to whatever his next step is this team can probably be a lot better than we expect just because Victor wanyama is that kind of a game changer player like we didn’t expect to be 22 wins but he did struggle early in his career it started to click after the allstar break and then down the stretch we really saw right that kind of make this like that this is my team finally like this I’m not gonna let us lose if I have to I’m going to score 40 right if that’s what it takes and so seeing that plus the addition of just instead of undrafted Julian champeny or what you know Harrison Barnes is a capable and NBA veteran that you can trust to be in his spot when he needs to be in his spot and also to be in the right place defensively yeah like he is just a vet which is something we clamored for so much at times last season right we like we saw the the youth movement thing isn’t working the way we thought they’re not taking the strides forward that we expected and we were just clamoring for vets at some point last year well we finally have that with now Chris Paul who is a 10-time NBA all defensive team player by the way and Harrison Barnes who is a really really good defender in his own right so just the the growth of Victor win Bama and what we’ve seen from him so far in just these Olympic qualifyings and the end of last season and the kind of trajectory he’s on along with the assumed Ascension still of a Devon Vel right this team can take a bigger step forward than maybe a lot of us even think and even without but like with all of these draft picks this is very very interesting to see like between them Oklahoma City the way those two these two teams are kind of building MH if teams are going to start copying this because of that tax apron and we’re we’re starting to see some of the ramifications we don’t know the full extent of them yet but we’re starting to see how this uh second tax apron is affecting roster construction yeah it’s definitely effective the Warriors I mean that’s a big reason why Klay Thompson is not with the with City anymore I mean they just want to get out of that apron the second apron and there they are but no the Spurs definitely have made moves to be a lot more competitive Chris Paul Barnes season wimy season Vel for for me for Vel I just I just think he needs to St healthy I mean I love to see him play at least 70 games and we haven’t he’s not gotten even close to that in his career always and that’s something he brought up to close out the season he said his goal is just to get healthy and stay healthy in the NB season but we kept on saying stuff right now about if Barnes is around and if this is happening but why are we saying that though we’re going to be talking about Lori Markin next yes James’s favorite segment is about to be up next why do we think or in this case James thinks that some of these moves were tactical in order to bring in the big man from Utah that’s going to be up next right here on lockdown Spurs hey but first I want own follow on X at I am pleasure so I think if Lori does come to San Antonio all of San Antonio has to applaud you and thank you for making it happen remember you’re trying to make look like a donkey you’re trying to scream out to the universe every day for how many years now make Lor the sa happen I I wanted him coming out of Arizona but like the big the big push came when dear was being uh traded to Chicago right and I thought Lori Marin was going to be a piece coming back and so did Lor marinin by the way yeah absolutely all right so we talked about the Spurs moves in the first segment Graham gone Barnes here all this good so maybe the Spurs are doing something you know they got more draft capital in the Barnes bull sack deal um they waved Devonte that frees up some space they’re likely to officially we’ll see if they do but you know maybe they might renounce and wave Bassie and Osman that frees up more space James this looks like it could be a massive massive setup to bring in Lori marketing and that last report it feels like the Spurs might be in the driver’s seat they very well could be and they’ve just added more to their War chess and you know I know a lot of people are ready to pack Kellen Johnson’s bag for him but you know his salary as such uh because of the first apron second apron Utah still needs about 16 million 16 and a half to get to that first apron like they still have to get up to the minimal salaries so having contracts like Barnes like you know uh Kellin Johnson like Zack Collins like that’s that’s money that can be used to help offset the loss of the 17 million 18 million that marinin makes this year and add enough to actually help get them up to the salary minimum they need to re reach so that’s not out of the realm of possibility of Utah still needing something to happen in order to get enough money on the books to not be in trouble right and they now have a lot of the things that Danny a covets in terms of draft picks and I understand the infatuation with Atlanta’s picks right to an extent because they are unprotected but part of me is also wondering what are the odds of lightning striking twice right in a sense of you’ve heard this you you’ve told me this but Atlanta is tanking why if they are L Landry Fields needs to be fired immediately because there’s no reason for that team to tank because they don’t own their own draft pick San Antonio owns that draft pick so there is no there is no reason or rhyme that Atlanta should be trying to be as bad as possible this year that’s not in their best interest so what is more likely Atlanta holds on to Trey Jones or Trey young because they’re not getting the value that they thought they may for him in terms of trade equity and the fact that you put two ball dominant guards in the back court together that just didn’t work it never worked but remember before Deonte got there Trey young drugged that team to an Eastern Conference Final because all the time that you have with Deonte Murray they’re splitting the ball right there neither one of them is really an off ball guard they’re they they’re play makers with the ball in their hands whether it’s scoring assisting they need the ball in their hands to be detrimental uh to A team’s defense when you have them on the court at the same time it negates each of them at some point so it’s almost like you’re playing four on five in a sense so by doing that by now moving away from the djon experiment that failed so spectacularly there bringing in a good Young Piece like a Dyson Daniels along with the first round picks right now you’ve got a three and D type of wing that you compare there s Tre can now be Trey again this team was ninth in the East last year they won with the lowest ever odds to potentially get a number one pick with 3% chance the rest of the East below them is still awful like bad bad Brooklyn is a team that actually is tanking Detroit did not get better Washington did not get better in any way shape or form you’ve got Chicago that is getting worse so the team that was above them is now below them in terms of tanking so there are a multitude of teams in the East alone that are wor than Atlanta and then you start to add the Western Conference teams into the mix that are bad like the Portlands and where do you expect them to finish me personally I expect them to finish between eight and 14 again I expect them to be a playing team and if Trey goes Trey there’s a team that that could advance in the playoffs just because he is that great right he is that individually great that he can do what Luca donic did which is drag a team on his back if if he gets hot yeah and so if that’s the case how valuable are those picks what what’s the maximum value of an Atlanta pick in terms of actual reality is it the 3 to 8% that you could possibly be the number one overall pick or is it more so it is that its most valuable right now that you can move it for maximum yeah because once that pick actually has a value to it attached to it it lessens it could raise the value of it obviously it’s if it ends up in the top three but if it falls outside of the top five that pick loses its value I look at what’s going on right now with the marketing deal and the Spurs should be in the driver’s leet no matter what with their War chest with their current players on the roster and you know know what I’m loving to see play out if it does happen how will Brian Wright deal with Danny a who has a reputation for policing teams we’ll see what Brian Wright is made of if it does happen now you move look you bring in Lori Markin in now this team is I think they’re playoffs they’re playoffs I think they’re top four fine throw with him a top four I don’t know if they’re top four but I got him a maybe I got him in one through six they they’ll fall in a one through six explain the way he is right now plus how he played at the end of the season and you have Devon Vel and you have Harrison Barnes potentially and Chris Paul and now Lori Markin it and yeah that’s nice potentially a a Jeremy soan maybe you know Stefan Castle Off the Bench like you have a really good roster that Stacks up again like I would put the Dallas Mavericks for a five seed right would you with this team with Lori marinan with Victor wi Bama with Devon Vel with Chris Paul with potentially still a har yeah would you put this roster ahead of Dallas’s yes so there at least fifth of them right yeah would you would you now you guys start looking at those top four teams you’re talking about the Denver you’re talking about Minnesota you’re talking about the Oklahoma cities they’re on par right yeah they’re on par yeah um yeah and another thing too is that because you mentioned about Atlanta and their picks being you know speculative like sure maybe lightning might strike twice but the chances that are rare why not in I see like an investment take those two Atlanta piics and just invest in an unknown commodity like Lori marinin uh he’s not old he’s not young you know he’s just entering his prime um about the only thing I can think of is maybe you know it’s going to take a while for him to get used to wimy just as the whole team took nearly two-thirds of the season to get used to wimy but he’ll have to understand that this is wm’s team not his um oh I think he’ll understand that easily He he’ll have to take a backseat when maybe in Utah he was in the you know the front and center for the team he’s not you know but I I think it works I think and the Spurs have been chasing him for years years they’ve been inquiring about him and everything and now they have the ability to do it and I get why Spurs fans are frustrated because everybody in the whole freaking world knows what’s in that war chest for San Antonio and if Danny a is going to up the price this is the spur and Brian W like oh okay sure no problem I mean they can do that I think of it this way too and this just hit me because we’ve been talking about that second apron the difficulty and building rosters Etc that you know this new formula is going to bring well that sounds a lot to me like having a a top tier quarterback in the NFL when’s the best chance to win in the NFL it is with a quarterback on his rookie deal right and so you try to maximize the talent around your rookie quarterback if he is any good to really Chase Super Bowls early before you have to blow up the construction of the team and alter how it’s fundamentally built when you actually start paying that quarterback yeah look how much Jason Tatum just got look how much Jaylen Brown got look at these new super max deals and what they financially cost teams right the best time to win may be right now while wimy is cheap so trying to build a contender around him while he’s on his rookie salary now that he’s proven that he is ready to go out and try and win that way when and and by giving up these early like these 2025 Atlanta pick six pick while he’s on his rookie deal so that when he signs his extension you still have those future assets to your name to where you can reshape the roster once you have to pay wimy absolutely yeah and you know I think there’s some rules you know Harrison Bens was just traded to San Antonio so there’s got to be like a moratorium yep so you know this any type of Lor deal may you know may not happen ASAP although James you think you you’re seeing reports about it might happen within 48 Hours um Poss possibly but if it does the more likely scenario could be in season I think that’s where you’re probably G to see it happen maybe at the trade deadline yeah uh well here’s what has to happen with the trade deadline stuff because Lori markkanen’s value ABS the bottom falls out of it because the way Lori markkanen’s extension Works August 6th he is extension eligible right August 6th he has to sign it on that exact day like the he that exact day because their ability to trade him there is such a finite window from the moratorium of when he signs that extension to when he can be traded so if he signs that extension on the day he’s able to on August 6th that means his only available trade day is on the actual trade deadline day if he signs it after the six he can’t be traded this year and that’s where the spers are in the driver seat they have yeah and and and and again even if it delays until the trade deadline literally the trade deadline again the Spurs are on the on the driver’s seat I’m going to be so upset James if something less than what we think the Spurs had to Pony up comes out because you’ve seen it before like they got all that for him you know like what that’s gonna be brutal right exactly but I don’t think it yeah yeah exactly that’s it yeah and I I don’t think Ang is gonna go that route I mean I think the what happened with the Brooklyn New York deal the the bridges uh deal there um that was a tax for Brooklyn trading to New York that’s what that was that was a tax that New York had to pay to deal with their in City rival right exactly but the Spurs are in the driver’s seat that’s all we care about it’s gotten kind of quiet of late you’re hearing a bunch you know you’ve heard I’ve heard reports from the Utah’s not going to deal him that oh it’s going to be waiting till the in season for anything to happen maybe they don’t want to move them you know but nevertheless long as I know the Spurs are still in talks I’m happy what if he doesn’t sign an extension what does that do to his trade value at the deadline you’re not giving up massive assets for a guy who has no future and you have like I said that very fine window that you have to thread for him to sign that extension when he’s eligible to then just be available to be traded only on the day of the trade deadline and we know a lot of these deals take a lot of time to put together and actually yeah come true fruition a lot of deals fall through the cracks on Deadline day just because they didn’t have enough time so they’re they Utah’s got a very thin needle to thread if they’re GNA try and do this at the deadline absolutely by the way earlier uh we’re talking about Atlanta I said Alexander sorry I’m Gant to say Rish so you add in ret with uh Trey young you know yeah you know maybe Atlanta picks don’t have that top three vibe to he is James pler with San Antonio sports star follow my next at I am pler hey pler the rookies made their summer league debut in a loss versus the Hornets but we don’t really care about wins and losses we just care about you know how the kids looking I thought car about wins and losses oh well well Spurs fans yeah I mean they lost in summer league not that you know not gonna have a 21 win season now that’s what’s gonna happen um you know uh let’s start off with Ingram didn’t really show out too much seven rebounds about 20 plus uh minutes you know definitely look like a rookie out there hopefully he’ll bounce back by the time this recording last night remember wm’s first ever Summer League game it was a bust a lot of people were ready to call him a bust after 10 summer league minutes yeah exactly so let Ingram cook he’ll be fine but Castle he looked like he might be the real deal uh 12 points oh right right because apparently he makes shots from the logo now I’m not I’m being serious like he made it like nearly the logo against the the Hornets in the summer league play now of course everybody who couched this a summer league play we get that but you know I like what I saw a castle he played at his own pace he didn’t get red up they Tred to pressure him he just kept on keeping on uh showed off the touch and that defense it’s that defense that really stood out for me my goodness James your thoughts I love what I saw out of out of Stefon Castle did I yeah hey the shot was great played on and off the ball and then uh the defense like you said was just him defending 94 feet is going to be so so good and no matter what this lineup looks like whether you’re putting him in with a Barnes or a vasel or a wimy or a soam like there is so much length and athleticism on that court and we also saw from soam with Poland kind of that defense and him being able to kind of you know push the pace and the uh stretch at 94 feet and defend from uh side to side like there are some Defenders on this team and there the thing that I love about castle is with him there is a mentality that matches it right like he he takes pride in playing defense others you have to kind of coax into it you know teach them blah blah blah like Castle’s a readymade born Defender he’s willing to just th if this is all I need to do this is what I’m willing to do yeah and he gets after it and you love the intensity that he plays with on the defensive side of the ball um also like what I saw City Soko um you know he’s somebody that I expect a lot more from this year uh he’s a guy that really cooked in Austin last year did yep and by the end of the year I was like man I just I want to see him in San Antonio like towards the end of the year this team sucks look at all the injuries like can we at least see City at some point uh because he had been playing so well in Austin so I think city is going to have a a different role this year than he did last year and I think he’s gonna be more of a contributor how much I don’t know yet but I do think we’re going to see some growth out of City this year and he will see at least if not all the time some more time in San Antonio than we saw last year yeah he physically he looked a lot lighter he openly said that he did lose some weight uh 20 right yeah 20 pound he lost a lot it which is good should go well because he had um I think he had knee issues in his rookie season so that’ll alleviate any damage that he does SC up and down the court on that knee lighter body better knees yeah I agree with you I think I like what I saw out of City you know I think he still needs more PT uh you know it was you know it was Rusty he really had he hadn’t played ball in a while you know because of the spot minutes he would get in San Antonio and then uh the remember the g-league season ends way before the NBA season ends right yeah so that’s a lot of time just sitting on the bench and then the offseason oh then now we get to Summer League so yeah you know give him a chance but overall you know really looking looking forward to seeing uh sasoko Castle Ingram and the rest of those Summers SPS let’s be honest those are the three we really care about you know the only only thing I’m interested in outside of those three is like who’s going to be that diamond in the rough they find this year remember there was Bren Forbes look at that we found him in summer league then it was Gary Neo we found him in summer leag who’s going to be the next that’s what I’m interested in if it even happens but at this rate where the roster is getting constructed I don’t think they need it anymore it Nelson Jr is that gonna be the guy I think it might be boay maybe boo maybe boo yeah we don’t know we don’t know but all right
